Food was HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE! The service was HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE! That is $22. I will never get back!! (On my way home, I decided to give this place a try) I ordered a California burrito. The waitress asked, "if I wanted cheese on top." I was confused by her odd question and asked for it on the side. (she never told me it was a $2 upcharge & the menu made no mention of it.) The burrito arrived at room temperature. The inside meat, rice, and beans were all dried out from sitting. I ordered a burrito. All they did was put the filling on a plate and tucked the tortilla into the sides and called it a burrito. I asked the waitress for a burrito size tortilla, so I can make my own burrito with the mess on the plate. (In ordered to eat it you had to eat it with a fork otherwise.) She comes back with the smallest flour tortilla in the building and tells me that's what they give when a customer asks for a tortilla. ( of course, it's almost a $1 extra fee) I said, " I would like what I asked for and would pay the additional upcharge. She initially refused, so I began to leave. The other waitress intervened agreed to bring me one. It was the most ridiculous thing ever! When the side of cheese arrived it was a cheese sauce. What I was given was a small condiment, 2-oz plastic container (of watered down fake cheese sauce for $2. (The menu made no mention of any if this.) Even after the fake cheese cooled , it still remained liquid. (They are charging $1.00 a ounce for fake cheese sauce, that doesn't even taste like cheese.) The salsa for chips taste like tomatoe sauce and flavorless. Both waitresses were horribly unattentive, they take order and you never see them again. (There was only me and two other people in the restaurant.) Upon check out she takes my debit card & adds a 3% fee. Then she has the nerve to hand me the small machine and expects me to choose the tip I'm hoping to pay! The machine pre established choices start at 15% and up to 25%! I laugh and say. " I will not be tipping. The food & service was horrible, you blindsided me with a upcharge & once you dropped off my food I never saw you again. " She asks me why. El sombrero, where do I begin. I'm not gonna cap, I use to be a major Stan. It's quick, easy, and pretty affordable, and who doesn't like Mexican food right!? Wrong! I don't, I use to be a regular in the months after covid, would come in every Wednesday for a quick 3 taco meal and a side of fries. But was quickly sickened with this and never came back. As a kid, when I would acquire the chicken and fries, I would regularly find plastic in my food, yeah... on the other hand, the queso de blanco, a star I tell you. Could devour this as my meal and I think everyone agrees with me on that one. The service, very friendly staff, I find myself feeling welcome and in a happy environment when I walk in. Made friends with a couple of them and would joke around using the Spanish language, good times. But the service it's self, asshole. Always am there for at least 40 minutes due to the service being incredibly slow. Have almost walked out a couple of times. I'm pretty biased since I don't enjoy Mexican food. I'll admit it's a good place to go for something easy and if you just get that Mexican craving. Other than that I would never recommend and usually tell people who want to come here, don't. read more

Food is delicious, atmosphere is fantastic, prices are fair, service is friendly. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because they don't always bring out everyone's food at a table together. Often one person is left waiting for their food while everyone else eats. Also there have been a couple times where I was seated & it seemed like I was forgotten about for awhile. Take note if you want a margarita they don't have a liquor license. This is one of my favorite restaurants. I plan to eat here again and highly recommend them. read more

Came here with my family and ordered nachos, a sausage and bean burrito, rice and beans, beef tacos and guacamole. All of it was tasteless, bland and ugly to look at. The severs who were all kids were sitting at the bar eating along with our server who complained forgot us. Sodas were flat missing syrup. Nothing was fresh. Everything was serve sloppily, unappealing and just sad. Will never go back. Sad because the place has amazing potential. read more

I don't like posting negative reviews about anything, but . . . this restaurant has never once served me a good meal, and I have given it every opportunity on numerous occasions. Quite the opposite, actually. What they've served me in the past has never looked, tasted, or been recognizable as, well, food. There are times when you MUST do the right thing. Like helping old people across streets, feeding the homeless, or saving lives. And this is one of those times. I am literally trying to save your life. Don't eat here! I mean, how can it possibly be considered edible and safe if I'm not even sure exactly what that glop on the plate is?! Is this the "dark matter" that astronomers have been looking for???? Don't care what I think? Fine. It's your money. But if you really want Mexican food, at least TRY to find a restaurant that PRETENDS to make Mexican food. I'm fairly certain that this place has one recipe: grease mixed with canned refried beans, and then dumped into a mixing bowl with something left over from the local elementary school's cafeteria trash. No. Scratch that. That recipe would have been acceptable. This is worse than that. Oh well. I'm going to see if it's possible to post this without selecting any stars whatsoever. I don't know these things, since I am not a big fan of posting reviews. But to not post this seems somehow a sin of omission. Like maybe God will hold me accountable some day for the souls lost that could have been saved. Or in this case, the dollars and appetites lost. Have no fear! I am here to set the record straight. Food was ok. Nothing grand. We had the carnitas. They were a bit underseasoned. Service was very slow. Took about 10 mins after getting seated to place our food order. We got the carnitas,but the tortillas didn't arrive until we were halfway done with our meal. We don't plan on returning. read more

If you are on 81 in Pennsylvania and want some Mexican food this is a must stop. Everything we ordered was very good. They do not serve alcohol here, but you really don't need it. PA alcohol permits and rules, crazy. The fajitas are extremely fresh hot and enough for two. What's nice about this place if you like things a certain way they will accommodate. The guacamole was very good and portion fair. The chip and dip are good, and they will bring as many was you can handle. The fried ice cream was good but order one.... large. My husband and I went here for our date night. What a surprised! The interior design was amazing! They're definitely ready for Christmas. They were pretty busy too. When we sat down, they have us chips and salsa ( very yummy ). We ordered 2 entrees. One was ( can't think of the name ) with bacon, chicken, beef and peppers and onions top with cheese sauce. The other one was ( can't think of the name either ) with shrimp, chicken, beef and peppers and onions. The serves in the hot plate. So, watch out! Don't burn your fingers. They both serves with rice, beans, lettuce, salsa Verde , sour cream and avocado. Also the tortillas. The portions are pretty good. For both entrees, it cost us about $ 27 including tax. Our waiter was pretty nice too. Definitely will come back again, if we're in the area. read more

My husband and I went to El Sombrero for dinner this evening. We pulled in and they weren't too busy so we decided it would be a quick dinner close to home after a long work week. We walk in and were seated and given our menu's almost immediately. There was a party next to us with maybe 8 people. There was a couple behind us with chips and salsa who also had menus. There were additional people seated throughout but they were not packed. After about 15 minutes I stood my menu up with hopes that a waitress would notice that we hadn't placed our order. Shortly after that the couple behind us walked up to get someone so they could place their order. The lady came back and leaned toward my husband and I to say that they were all just standing around up there doing nothing but talking. Shortly after, a waitress came over apologized and took our orders. We ordered cheese with our chips and salsa. When it arrived it wasn't hot and the chips were barely warm. The chips came and went and we were offered a second basket of chips which we needed to finish off the cheese. About 15 more minutes went by and we were offered a third basket of chips. At this point our order still hadn't been brought out. The same went for the couple behind us. I overheard the lady saying this is ridiculous...the husband (I believe) said, ridiculous was 30 minutes ago. I have never gone to a Mexican restaurant where a second basket of chips came out before the meals...let alone three. Our food was finally brought out. It wasn't hot and wasn't all that great. It was missing sour cream and guacamole. We picked at the meals and we were soon ready to go. We waited for five or so minutes and no one followed up to see how we were doing or if we were ready for the check so we walked to the counter to pay our bill. When we walked up we saw 5-7 employees including what appeared to be an uninterested manager and three employees had their faces in cell phones. There you have it...all explained. This isn't the first time we have eaten here. We've always chalked it up as an OK Mexican restaurant that's close to home. We try to support local businesses and we realize that people have bad days but the service received tonight sealed the deal. We will never go back. If you're wanting Mexican, save your time and money and go to Chambersburg or Hagerstown. Maybe the new Mexican restaurant that is suppose to be opening soon in Greencastle will be a better local option. read more

The very same issues remain that others have mentioned over the years. No music, no alcohol, you cannot BYOB. Beef is tough, chicken is chewy, service is inconsistent like the meals. I stopped eating here. They are not good neighbors either, as they recently were sited for dumping used cooking oil into storm drain. The owner is not friendly. On the recommendation of a friend, We hopped off route 81 during a 17 hour drive home after vacation and also appreciated the the fast service/food to our table and check as we still had 6 hours left to go. Spent just about the same as if we had gone to McDonald's but had an amazing experience. Definitely will stop by if in the area again. All workers were constantly busy caring for tables. Ordered Fajita Texacana asked for 4 dollars extra shrimp and add mushrooms got regular amount 8 pieces of shrimp I counted them and a spoon full of mushrooms iv ordered from them 10 times cause the food is ok when they get ur order rite it's 50 50 if u get ur order the way you want it they don't read the tickets they just make what they want if you say no peppers or onions they give you peppers and onions the beef and chicken is dry guys give ur business to someone else these ppl don't care plus they got caught dumping grease in the storm drains that's not cool after eating I bit in to nasty burned peppers please ppl don't eat here they screw ur order up plus three of my buddies went in on feb 4th all there order was wrong but they were nice and didn't say anything read more

Placed a carry out order this evening. Was told it would be 30 minutes. Arrived at the restaurant after 30 minutes. Waited another 30 minutes for the food. Sat there watching people arrive at tables and being served their food, while I still waited. Got the food home and it is ice cold. Would not recommend for carry out. Food is not very good cold. Thank you Yelp, the reviews led me here. The chips are warm, salsa fresh and good. My carnitas are outstanding, highly recommended. Refried Beans & rice are excellent. The waitress should be friendlier, maybe she was having a bad day. Smiles are always nice to see. In a large city, I'd give 4 stars. I tried this restaurant while staying at a nearby hotel during the 2016 anniversary of Gettysburg. I was first struck by the total lack of atmosphere: no decorations, dim lighting, no music, and overall very quiet. In short, it was stripped of any of the usual physical & atmospheric characteristics of a Mexican restaurant. The whole ordeal felt mildly awkward, with seated patrons staring at me as I entered, and initially no staff in sight. Still, the food is the integral factor in a restaurant. I first ordered the queso dip - a staple item for my appetizers - and was met with disappointment. In addition to being lukewarm, it had a watery consistency; it would hardly stay on the chip. The tortilla chips themselves were also not terribly warm. For my entree, I ordered enchiladas with rice & beans. Although my meal looked to be made with quality ingredients, it too was lukewarm & may only have been deemed decent in taste. As for the service, my waitress seemed friendly enough. She was neither extraordinarily fast nor slow. Somewhat oddly though, for my drink she brought me a Coke or Pepsi (I can't remember which they offered) with a lemon on the side. To be fair, this is the only encounter I've had with El Sombrero. I understand that every restaurant has its off days (we're all only human, after all). Even my favorite restaurants have off days where things just aren't up to the usual par. Having read glowing reviews of El Sombrero by others, I'm inclined to believe that perhaps my experience is not a common one.
