I really enjoyed this place. The food was delicious, the drinks were great, and everything came out fresh. It was one of those places where you leave thinking, "I'll definitely be back." Our server was awesome too. She was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome without checking on us every two minutes. I also found out they have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. We always enjoyed Mexicali Cantina in Frederick, so when that location closed, we started thinking about the newer one in Hagerstown. I'm happy to say the food's as good or better, with good service in an interesting setting. On crowded Massey boulevard with its strip malls and chain restaurants, it takes a keen eye to pick out this spot (hint - look for the Hobby Lobby parking lot). Then get ready for some unusual decor - the last occupant, a seafood place, did a LOT of intense decorating, including ocean-blue floors and dock pilings. We've visited this location 3 or 4 times now, and the food's been fine, partly out of our sentiment for the gone Frederick location. It's not hard to find Latino cuisine around here, but Mexicali had some of our favorites, including the delicious chiles rellenos (here, fried battered chilis, stuffed with cheese). When we went last week, it seemed clear they'd recently stepped up the game a little - new dinnerware and maybe even larger portions, and just as tasty if not more so. As usual, the chips were crispy and good (though our basket was mostly fragments) and the house salsa is a treat, fresh and zippy but not too hot. I had my go-to Azteca combo, with that chile relleno, a pork tamal, and a chicken enchilada, along with Mexican rice (though no beans this time, for some reason). My wife chose her favorite shrimp fajitas, also with beans and rice, though maybe a little skimpy on the bell peppers this time. My classic margarita on the rocks was big and zesty. Our server was attentive and polite. The crowd was thin on this Saturday night, so there were plenty of staff on hand. My wife and i were there today for dinner. Our first time here. We were very impressed. We got the fried calamari, so good with a creamy dipping sauce. I was in the area, it was getting later in the day and I needed a place to stop and feed the family. I saw the ratings and thought "can't be that bad, let's check it out". I was surprised, wonderfully! Our waiter (Ruben) was friendly, attentive, and everything you could reasonably ask for. You absolutely need him if you go there! The place was very clean, and the menu is exactly what you would expect. Food arrived hot and cooked very well (Yes!). It was absolutely delicious all around. Family from adults to children were very happy with portion sizes and flavor (soo good!). I will be definitely stopping here again in the future. The food was less than to be desired, even though it had four star reviews. I was very disappointed. They were very accommodating sent over a complementary entrée. On a road trip heading home, we stopped for late lunch/early dinner on Cinco de Mayo. We figured they would be doing something special, and we were 100% correct. They had a section of the parking lot blocked off to accommodate outdoor seating, a "dance floor" and live music. It created an amazing atmosphere. We sat inside at the bar. They had a limited cinco de mayo menu. I thought the prices were a bit on the high side to be a limited, special event menu ($30 pitcher of margaritas, $50 fajitas for 2, etc.) Service was a little slow, but understandable because it was so busy. The food being served looked really good. We ended up chatting with others at the bar and never ended up ordering food, but we'll definitely go back to try it out. Overall, great. It was a fun afternoon/evening. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because we haven't tried the food yet. But the margaritas are great! read more

I placed a $125 order from the restaurant via Grubhub, including pozole. Problem: the restaurant doesn't have pozole on the menu. I also ordered chips and guacamole. No chips are delivered. I called Mexicali Cantina. Hernando, the manager, told me that they never had pozole on their menu. Therefore, it was GrubHub's problem, not his. He also couldn't do anything except that if I wanted to drive over, they could give me the chips. But no pozole, no offer to replace the item with a same-price item, and no refund. After 3 minutes on the phone with Grubhub, they refunded the money for both. So, in 1-2 business days, I'll have $22 returned to my bank card. Forty-five minutes later, GrubHub called me back to say the restaurant called them and asked them to remove the items and issue a refund. But the restaurant never bothered to call me to apologize. Kudos to Grubhub for covering two errors that were no fault of theirs, specifically taking my money for an item the restaurant didn't even offer and not fulfilling another item correctly. Boo to you, Mexicali Cantina, for not following GrubHub policy: "Restaurants are responsible for keeping their menu up-to-date: Restaurants should regularly audit their menus on Grubhub to ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date." The manager, by admitting that they have never offered pozole, also admitted they haven't ever reviewed the menu on GrubHub or didn't look carefully enough. Attention to detail matters in customer service, at least in my opinion. And boo to you, Hernando, for a) not wanting to make making two problems right in a way that doesn't inconvenience the customer and b) putting the responsibility for those errors onto someone else instead of owning up to errors. Integrity and a commitment to customer service matters, at least in my opinion. Mexicali Cantina is added to my growing list of Hagerstown businesses that demonstrate a lack of commitment to customer service. That was my first and, mercifully, my last time ordering from Mexicali Cantina. And that is all. read more

We'll start with the chips. They were the bomb diggity. Thin, crispy, fresh & salty. The salsa was homemade & tasty. I got the X hot & it was good as well. Orders were beef tacos, shrimp tacos, ceviche, & chicken burrito. It wasn't really busy and the service was on the slower side. With margaritas, chips & good company we didn't care. I was quickly seated and given chips and salsa. For a Mexican restaurant one would except a great salsa it was not my watress recommended the Marisco Salteado which came withe black beans and Rice. Food Review: Chips and Salsa 1.5/5- The salsa was very bland it was missing the lime zest that you expect when you are eating a Mexican Salsa Marisco Salteado 0/5- Scallops were overcooked like rubber bullets. Shrimp tasted old and had a very strong taste. Calamari was a health hazard slimy and soft. The mussels were not edible. Black Beans 5/5- The only saving grace. Was full of flavor and had a little spice. Rice 1/5- Bland no flavor. Missing the cumin that makes Mexican rice good Plantains 1/5- Overcooked hard. Tasted like a mouth full of sugar. The bartender put her friends beers on our check and when we asked her about it she got the manager and the manager who was also the owner called us a liers. We drink miller light, there was dos xxx and modellos on our check (it was just us and her friends at the bar). When we refused to leave until we got a refund he threatened to call the cops. This place should be more crowded than it is. They have great margaritas in a really nice bar area with outdoor seating and fantastic food. I suggest anything from the bottom of the back of the menus--the Latin American specialties. I ordered delivery from here for the first time and the food was just amazing. I specifically asked for no sour cream, and both the Shrimp Chimichanga and Tres Colores combo had a healthy amount of it. I ordered extra refried beans, and they taste like the kind you get out of the can. I would not recommend the refried beans at all. If i had a lemon wedge, it would have been decent. The Shrimp Chimichanga was labeled as Seafood Chimichanga when I ordered off uber eats, and mine had only shrimp in it- no trace of the scallops from the description. The Chimichanga did have a ton of large, juicy shrimp and it was delicious. I dove into the enchiladas from the Tres Colores combo so I wasnt able to take a picture but it was crazy good. The spinach enchilada was wild. I had a hard time stopping myself from inhaling the whole thing. They also sent complimentary chips and salsa so all in all, it was an amazing experience. The ingredients were fresh and great quality. I highly recommend this place and will probably order again while i'm still in town. read more
