Stopped by after seeing all the great reviews on Yelp and because we were craving birria tacos. It's a small restaurant with an even smaller parking lot, definitely one of those hole-in-the-wall spots. When we went, there was only one woman working and handling all the orders that day. The quesabirria tacos are $6.50 and the regular birria tacos are $5. You may think it's expensive for a taco but the portions are HUGE and they do not skimp on the meat. Honestly such a great deal! The agua frescas are $5 and come in a big cup (about 32 oz). They aren't the best I've had since I don't think they're made with fresh fruit, but still refreshing and enjoyable. My husband ordered the California burrito, which wasn't really our favorite. The tortilla was huge but not a lot of food inside of it. There are definitely better spots for that, but their birria is the real winner here. We'll definitely be back for more birria tacos and maybe to try the barbacoa next time! read more

This place is phenomenal!! By far the best tacos and nachos we've had in San Diego so far in our 10 years here. We tried the adobada tacos, the Carne Asada tacos, and the Carne Asada nachos. Everything was incredible, with a perfect char on the Carne Asada, tons of lime juice, a delicious mix of sour cream and cheese and cilantro and onions on the nachos, and thick roasted jalapeños and salsas included in the taco orders. We DoorDashed twice from here and everything was fresh and delicious both times. I highly recommend you give it a try! This place had the best barbacoa tacos I've ever had! Service was very attentive and friendly and the food came pretty quickly. While we were waiting for food we were given freshly made tortilla chips and salsas. Just a note, the location is a little tucked away and there isn't a lot of parking. Birria was juicy and tortillas had the consommé dip before hitting the plancha. Carne asada was flavorful- no guac served with my taco but I assume you can request. I went Tuesday morning, and the service was fast! For 3 tacos, consomé and an agua de Jamaica it was $26, however it was well worth it! The tacos are perfect sized! This hidden little gem doesn't look like much from the outside, and it's in the part of spring valley you have no business being in unless you're doing one of two things- 1, selling stolen car parts, or 2, coming here to eat.... But don't sleep on El Taller de la Barbacoa. The man behind the counter is the owner and he's serving straight AMAZING barbacoa. IYKYK... Barbacoa de borrego is better than birria. I'll fight anyone who disagrees. BTW - if you think chipotle serves barbacoa you probably think Taco Bell makes a great "traditional" chalupa supreme. Expand your pallet. Stay away from corporate food. Support small businesses that are pouring their heart and soul into what they do! The first time I came they were sold out, so I tried the birria and it's great, it delicious, etc etc.... But... The Barbacoa is what steals the show. Wrapped in magey leaves and slow cooked for hours the meat is tender, flavorful, fatty (in the best way possible) and the consume with rice and garbanzo beans warms you better than a hug from your Mama.... After a few tacos the essence of the spices and natural bouquet of the lamb meat stays on your hands like a redolent scent that takes you back to Mexico. Aquí es Texcoco is still the gold standard for San Diego barbacoa, but my man is giving them a run for their money! Other yelpers referenced the roll tacos and they are too. The avocado slices, lettuce and tomato are fresh and that's a reflection of the chef's desire to serve delicious food. After dressing the roll taco plate with salsa and lime, the leftover veggies and cheese are like a bonus salad! This place oddly located below a apartment complex & above another Mexican restaurant serves some of the best tacos in SD!! Decided to try this spot out based on the positive reviews on both Google and Yelp. Got the 1 pound of barbacoa with a side of consome. The barbacoa itself was decent but somewhat dried and it was room temperature when I got home ( This was a 10 min drive ) the meat also had bones in it. The consome itself was very salty, the salsa containers were also on the smaller side. Other places include rice and beans with their barbacoa, unsure if this place does? Overall I would not come back for barbacoa here but maybe would come and try their other food items. read more
