The best tamales in Denver! Definitely worth the visit. The tamales are made every day fresh and have a significant amount of meats and fruits (in the pineapple and strawberry) ones. They open at 0500 and once they are gone and done for the day you miss out . This is how good they are, on the weekends there are lines outside because of people waiting for this deliciousness. The store is a little hole in the wall, this is what makes it the best. I forgot to mention this is the only place that makes strawberry tamales in the area. Great tamales right off of 225 and Colfax! Grabbed a dozen chicken and a dozen rajas con queso (green chili cheese) tamales, and a few pineapple and strawberry (basically all they had left) on a Thursday morning before heading out for a ski weekend. I think it was about $18 for a dozen. They open early, which makes me think they sell early and sell out. All flavors were a hit with my crew! They are double wrapped (husk and paper) which made for easy splitting up and re-heating. Flavor was great, good masa (pink for the fresa tamal) and not too dense. I also got two breakfast burritos, which were the perfect size for the road, they had a little pork and a little chili to complement the egg potato and cheese. The place was family run, and there was nothing fancy with the façade or signage. Service was quick and easy; they did speak English on my visit, but tamales are kind of a universal in Colorado so if it's Spanish only the signage will get you through. I paid in cash as I had read online they were cash only, although there was a kind of weird sticker that implied you could pay with a credit card. I didn't pursue that avenue as they took my cash. My family and I wanted to try a new place for tamales since our go to, Pochito's, is so far. This place had been named as one of the top places in Aurora, so we decided to try it. We got the pork with red Chile, the chicken and green chile and the two sweet choices-strawberry and pineapple. I also got a carne asada burrito. The tamales were still warm. They are $20/dozen and, while they look to be substantial I. Size, they're actually pretty thin. The savory tamales weren't bad. While the pineapple one wasn't a hit with the family, the strawberry one was pretty good. The hands-down star of the show, however was the asada burrito. It was $5 but it was super tasty! We will stick to Pochito's for our tamales, but would definitely go to this place for a savory tamale in a pinch. We will go there often for the burrito. read more

this place is absolutely not good, I thought this place will be a good hole in the wall for Mexican food. Wrong! don't waste your time or money. i tried the Gorditas with Chicharon in green sauce, i only took a bite and the rest went to the trash. one important thing that you might want to know is that they don't make the food to order. What they do, is they make a bunch of burritos and everything else they sell and have them setting in the some warmers! maybe the food is sitting there 10mins or 2 hours who know,, from my own experience the food was awful:( read more

I called and they were open Christmas Eve. I was working and decided to bring a dozen for the crew. I got half and half red Chile pork, and the green Chile chicken. I thought the chicken were amazing, the pork were very good. They had had desert tamales as it was a holiday. This is a cash only establishment. The first time I attempted to purchase I did not have paper funds on hand, so plan accordingly. They do breakfast burritos too. Tamales are authentic and delicious!! I got a dozen 1/2 chicken and 1/2 pork for $15. They are so nice and her son helped translate. Worth going to this diamond in the ruff for sure. Also, don't be fooled by the red tamale, the green chicken is muchos spicy!! read more

Now Im no expert but I love these tamales. It is so easy. Just walk up to the order window and tell them what you want. I get a dozen beef and chicken tamales. Then pay. $15 a dozen. They have other things i have not tried, but I will eventually. Its not a sit down place. It takes about 2 minutes. They open early, I think 6am. They close at 2 or 3pm. I think their main business is to food trucks and other businesses that sell them. So happy i tried them. It is a small place kind of tucked away in a corner. It looks a little run down. Dont let that stop you from trying them. They know what they are doing. read more

This place has the best tamales! We go bi-weekly and get cash from the ATM across the street. We usually buy 20-30 and then simply re-steam them prior to our consumption. My father-in-law who is from Mexico was very impressed when he tried these and that's saying something because he is hard to impress. Everyone has always been very kind and gracious towards me as I am still learning my way with the Spanish language. I told my husband that we needed to find a place that sells tamales because that's what my family makes for the holidays. Since I wasn't with my family I at least needed to eat tamales. El Tamalero did not disappoint!!! This little hole in the wall joint made my week!!! Lol! I felt like my grandmother had helped him cook it! He was so nice too! I if they were too spicy and he actually put a tamale in front of me and said "you should see for yourself" and it was just right! They had several options to chose from and the masa to chicken ratio was just right! Not too much masa and not too much of the stuff inside! Man, I wanted to take some home to Texas with me but we have them all over the place there. Lol! Anyways, if you EVER want some tamales that remind you of your childhood or if you want to get a feeling for real authentic Mexican flavored tamales please check them out! YES!! This place has amazing tamales. They staff is very friendly and even though they were closed, she took the time to cook me up some tamales in an hour and made sure that I had some for the party I was going to. Holy Hell!!! I was born and raised in El Paso Tx and though I may be the whitest Mexican you'll ever meet, I know and love Mexican Food El Tamalero is THE quintessential "hole-in-the-wall" mexican food dive. I pulled over because their sign/menu boasts Gorditas -a masa cake, stuffed with meat cheese, etc- which are all too rare here in Denver. I took 6, and of course 6 tamales. After shelling out the $13 I sped home and ripped into my spoils. DAMN!! So good, it smacked of home and tasted like memories. The gorditas were everything i hoped for, just good old fashioned Mexican comfort, but the tamales (as you might guess) were amazing. Well-stuffed, moist, and beautifully spiced. There was very little english spoken and if the health department finds this place, it might not be around very long, but for sure get to this place, buy as many tamales as they have on hand and stock your freezer read more

Four stars for their tamales alone. There's not much of a storefront, just a couple windows through which money is exchanged for some of the best tamales I have found in Denver. I believe the majority of their business is wholesale to food trucks and restaurants as you can see vehicles lined up at 6:00am when they open. Wow o wow! The best hole in the wall in Denver. There isn't a menu but if you speak Spanish or you have a friend that speak Spanish you'll need them. Fortunate for me I speak it and you have to ask them about the gorditas. The rajas con queso is on point. It's so fresh!!!! It's definitely one of those places that you want to get in there early because they stopped cooking gorditas by 10 a.m. I did notice that it looked a little run-down but you can tell that they keep it very clean. My wife and went on a quest to find the best tamales in Denver for our Christmas feast. After stopping at several other locations (listed on Yelp and WestWord) we drove the 45 minutes from our home in Littleton to El Tamalero. Although there is a picnic table inside to sit down and eat, this establishment is more about pickup retail orders and deliveries for restaurants. We were greeted by the friendly owner Raul who proudly gave us the scoop on his tamales. We tried the red pork, green chicken, cheese with chile (rajas), and the sweet pineapple (dessert) tamales. You could tell they were made fresh that morning and the ingredients were top-notch. The massa had the perfect texture, the sauces were rich and flavorful and the meats were lean and tasty. The pineapple tamale is made from fresh pineapple, not from a can and had a beautiful color and taste. After our taste testing was completed we ordered 7 dozen (they freeze very well) for our Christmas dinner. Our quest had ended and the wife was happy. All in all a very good day! read more
