I got a combination plate with a taco, flautas and a smothered tamale. The taco was so soggy and fell though at the bottom. The flauta had hardly any meat inside, it was the best thing on the plate. The tamale tasted old and cold. The green chile warmed it up a bit but the inside was still cold and the outside was dry. The rice was the worst! It was so cold and dry, it tasted very old and disgusting. I was not happy with my meal. I left feeling hungry and a little sick. I love the location in Denver but this was awful and for $15? This place was one of my favorites. It has drastically gone down hill. Took my folks there tonight and I ordered the combo fajitas. They were terrible. It looked like they used scraps of steaks and scraps from a chicken plate. I had to go digging to find any protein. The onions and peepers were also terrible cuts and burned. It was 30% meat and 70% burned veggies. The toppings beyond tiny portions. Lettuce wasn't even enough for one taco. This was the last time I eat there. Not even the Michelada was good. What a shame. We received lukewarm food and burnt Fajitas, the platter that they served the fajitas on was almost on fire. The waiter was kind but we felt as if we were not supposed to be there. My husband and I try to be kind and polite to everyone especially if we are being served in a restaurant. Bleh. First time in a long time that I can remember not finishing a meal at a Mexican restaurant. Hostess was, shall we say, a little less then friendly when I first arrived. The server started to make up for the experience, friendly and professional. I think the first clue was the statement at the top of the menu that said the first bowl of chips & salsa was free, but $1.75 a bowl after that. A first for me. The salsa with the chips was OK, but the side of guacamole I got with it was flavorless. I had a large margarita, but I'd be hard pressed to say there was any alcohol in it. I ordered the #1 combo because I like a little variety when ordering Mexican food. It came with a cheese enchilada, beef taco, guacamole tostada and a Chile relleno. I actually had to just ask my server what I had, because everything basically tasted the same. The tostada? I already mentioned the guacamole above. There was no seasoning in anything. Maybe this is what passes for Mexican food in Colorado, but for this so cal boy it was pretty poor. This place use to be on point! You would order and 5 minutes later your food would come out steaming. The waiters use to be on top of it. But in the past couple of months they have gone through staff changes and most likely management changes. The quality of service has completely tanked. The food is still pretty tasty minus the burnt tortilla chips. But the service is sooo bad. Mistakes happening left and right. The past two times we have had the same waiter and he was awful both times. We ordered queso that never came out and shocking it was on our tab. He said he would go check on our food and 20 minutes later still no food and no waiter all the while our cups were empty, chips were empty and he didn't even acknowledge it. We had to ask a busser for refills because the waiter was too busy dealing with other screwed up orders. Finally! A nice Mexican restaurant in the state of Colorado! I am originally from Virginia, and I have lived in Colorado for four years and this is the first Mexican restaurant that I really love. This place is GREAT! Especially if your hubby want Mexican food and you are craving something else that day.. (Wide variety of Mexican and American food) Usually when my hubby's craving Mexican food, I'm not, but for some reason when he suggests this place I actually do want to eat some Mexican dish. I've been here several times and sooo LOVE IT!! The menu has so many choices and their food is Delicious...mmm..mm.mmm also the Best Salsa EVER! I've had everything from the chimichanga to the halibut and let me tell you, they are all tasty. I was here once a couple months ago and had a great time sitting at the bar. I came in tonight and the bartender, Evony remembered me. That's HUGE in my book. I am on a business trip and any friendly face on the road is awesome!! Evony chatted with me about how work is going, how long am I in town, etc. One will say, "Well of course! She's working tips!" That's FINE with me. It gets old going to restaurants alone on business trips so any extra excitement and friendly service is worth a million! The food is really good! Prices are super reasonable. The combinations all come with 3 items which is really too much food. Most of the combos are under $10. I had a smothered burrito, tamale and beef enchilada. I ended up taking 3/4 of the burrito home which is fine! Lunch tomorrow. I will definitely come back for the good customer service. Bonus that the food is good too! read more

I know any day can be a good day but for any restaurant things can at times be a little off, unfortunately resulting in a bad review. My own experience was 5 stars all the way!! The staff was friendly and very attentive. The food was delicious. And I got to practice my (work in progress) Spanish. My server was "Noe" and he was super. I tried a new beer not yet in the menu, Montejo. They were having some trouble with the Stella keg. I actually like Montejo mejor (better!). The rice was over cooked and crunchy and there were peas in it that were dried up and crunchy. The beans had no flavor and the guacamole wasn't even homemade. Probably came from a bag. Had a lunch combination plate with a smothered beef burrito, cheese enchilada, and a chile relleno. I've had my share of Mexican food and I'd like to think that I can tell these three items apart. What I was served was three indistinguishable, shapeless lumps drowning in sauce. No classic Mexican rice and beans, and a sad spoonful of lettuce and tomato. To be fair, it still tasted okay because it's kind of hard to screw up something that's spicy and cheesy, and this place also won't break the bank, hence +1 star. Will definitely put you in a post-lunch coma if that's what you're looking for. One last note: Don't come here if you're in a hurry. Having been born and raised in Oklahoma where Mexican food is a critical part of the diet, I have been searching for quality Mexican food in Colorado since I got here! El Tapatio was pretty good. In my opinion, it's the best Mexican food I've had since being in the area. We got the chips and salsa, queso, and fajitas for 2 with steak and chicken. We also had the flan and sopapillas for dessert. The chips and salsa was pretty standard, though my pansy self found the salsa to be really hot (my boyfriend tells me I'm pathetic, so who knows). The queso tasted like Velveeta melted down with some peppers thrown in. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, just not super unique or authentic. The fajitas were really good! I noticed a lot of people getting them - at least four other tables around us had them, so maybe they are a known specialty of the place? The flan was delicious and so was the sopapilla. Overall, I am totally biased having been raised on amazing Mexican food, but I found this place to be pretty much average. Our service was good and the food was good. We will probably be back, but it's not amazing. Pro tip, though: check-in on Yelp while you're there to get 10% off your visit! read more

Food was very good. However, my friend ordered steak fajitas, and asked for no onions, no sour cream, no beans and if she could have a few avocado slices instead of guacamole. Upon this request the server said no problem, but when we got the bill we had been charged an additional $3.75 for avocado slices, after getting half of the original parts of the meal removed. When we asked the server about it, she spoke to her manager and told us he said "that's just the way it works".
