To be fair the food deserves a 3 star. I liked the sauce that they put it on side. A tomato based red/yellow pepper stew. Fresh and flavorful. What I was so so so disappointed was the type of fish they put into my order. The yellowish rice was well-seasoned. The only BIG serous issue was they should be honest about type of fish they use! Absolutely NOT red snapper but much much cheaper porgies. So consumers won't feel like fools. (I was looking forward to my red snappers, which says CLEARLY both on their site and menu. I walked in feeling a little uneasy because it's a bit dark and you could see into the kitchen which didn't look so orderly.. we sit down among the traditional decor, and place our order. The waitress was nice but there was deff a language barrier... good thing my husband can speak Spanish... we place our order, and it did take a while but that is only because everything is handmade. I really thought with the great reviews of this place, that the food would be amazing. It was really nothing special at all and the worst part... I was sick by the time I got home.... El Tazumal has literally hands down one of the best Criolla Chicken Soup !!! Very authentic and the portions are pretty good !! Pupusas are decent to say the least and they have really friendly staff. Def a must visit if your in the area. read more

I like places that are fully confident about what they are and do their thing with pride. Tried this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by the kind service, the excellent and fresh cooking, the authentic Salvadoran menu, the very reasonable prices, and the clean and comfortable space. I haven't tried enough of the menu of course. But what I had was a simple and perfectly executed Central American breakfast, and it was excellent. If El Tazumal was located in Brooklyn, it would be frequented by hipsters. If it were in Manhattan, it would be popular with twenty-somethings after work. In Glen Cove, the clientele is mainly Central American families - an excellent indication of the authenticity of the food. Knowing that Central American cuisine really shines with meat, I didn't think there would be much for me at El Tazumal, but there are some very excellent seafood options. The papusas are just as excellent as the other reviewers have pointed out - try the zucchini or the 'flower' (which I think is the zucchini flower), or, if you must, the meat ones have a nice reputation. They are served with an excellent mayo-less coleslaw, one of two types of coleslaw (the other has mayonnaise and comes with some of the entrees). Portions are generous, and the main event comes with a starch (fries or rice) and salad or coleslaw. Some come with maduros (sweet plantains) or other treats. I don't eat chicken, but I hear the fried chicken is outstanding, and it looks and smells exceptional. Beer is served, or you can have a delicious horchata. Dessert is pretty much limited to flan, which I have never liked and would not try - but if that's your thing, it's probably good. There's been a sign up suggesting tres leches (or tres besos) cake, but so far I haven't been lucky enough to arrive on one of those days. The dining area is small but not tiny, with a cozy atmosphere. Depending on when you arrive, your server may or may not speak English, but that isn't a problem as everyone has a friendly and understanding attitude (menu descriptions are in Spanish and English). Prices are very good for the New York area and Long Island. If you're looking for authentic Central American cuisine on Long Island, El Tazumal is a great choice. read more

Love this place. Wonderfully nice people and patrons and the best fried chicken around. The pupusas and chicarones are also really good. i bet this is the only salvadorean restaurant in the whole north shore. food is decent. i like their tamales, soft tacos, and the soups are great. you can try some traditional salvadorean dishes here too such as steak with planatian and pupusa an omelet/pancake thing which looks way too heavy for my stomach. the staff is really friendly and laid back. they make everything to order. the ingredients are fresh. they don't use nasty cooking oil. the salvadorean suprema pilsner is ok. only complaint is they need better salsa. the juke box is great, huge variety of latino music to choose from. read more

El tazumel has become a take out staple since moving to Glen Cove! At this point whenever we're where to take out from its a contender. I'll admit that I've ordered it 2 nights in a row and see myself doing so again in the future! Highlights are the papusas, empanadas and the Plato Tipico. On my staying in New York we traveled from manhattan to this restaurant, we ordered the drinks at 7 pm we sat and chat while we ordered the food, 20 minutes later othe people arrived within minutes they had their order served and I believe the owner visited their table, we sat there for 50 minutes and there was no food, my sister asked for an explanation to the waitress who said that the cook did not want to turn the food out pointing to the owner. She never said a word. We just paid for the drinks and left hungry, their priority is to serve friends first and no regular customers . Very bad practice, never go back poor business practices. Waisted hours driving and left hungry . Not recomendable 3 thumbs down read more

I've been ordering pupusas for me and my family from this restaurant for years but the last few times I've placed an order all of my pupusas have been made very poorly! All the food is stuck together and all the cheese is all over the place that you don't even know where the pupusas starts and where it ends. The person who cooks this fell off big time! Very not happy about my order today and in the past. Mostly nobody will read this or care anyway so that they can improve with the way they make their food. Never ordering from this place again :( read more

I did enjoy this place and I definitely would return. This is an authentic Salvadorean restaurant, based on the demographics of the customers and the variety of food on the menu. There are a few Tex-Mex dishes, but other than that, everything is authentic. The location is pretty good, with available parking. Decor is typical Spanish cafe, with a few tables, typical ambiance, although this place had a jukebox, which was strange. Service was pretty good, although I didn't expect much from this sort of cafe. Prices are reasonable, not incredibly cheap. We started off with their nachos with guacamole, which was not authentic, but we weren't craving pupusas tonight. The nachos were excellent, loaded with creamy guacamole, refried beans (perhaps the best I have ever had), cheese, and some veggies. The chips were crispy and the dish itself was very good. We tried their half chicken, which was huge. The chicken was perfectly cooked, with a nice seasoning. Their sides were great; the rice was yummy and the beans were amazing. I had the lomo saltado, which was not the greatest, but was definitely pulled off pretty well. The beef was delicious, tender, great with the sauce. The french fries, although they are part of the dish normally, did not work. They became really soggy and did not enhance the dish at all. The vegetables were great though. The rice was yummy. Their tacos are worth trying out as well. I would like to come back to sample some of their more authentic dishes, but I am thrilled to find a decent Salvadorean place on Long Island. read more
