We tried this place based on a local article listing best places to get green chili in Denver. The green chili was disappointing but their carne asada tacos were not. The food comes out fast. Their salsa had a good spice level (might be a tad spicy for some) and good flavor. The Jamaica aguas Fresca was lacking in the flavor department. I'm originally from Denver and now live near Mexico City. Denver is lucky to have the Mexican food it has, especially green chili, which doesn't exist down here. As far as I'm concerned, the Mexican food down here is mediocre at best. I used to eat at El Tejado at least once a week, as my office was nearby. I loved to build my own combo, usually a chile relleno, beef enchilada and guacamole tostada. Delicious! Other times I would have a beef and bean burrito smothered in green chili. Whatever I ordered, I always left happy. We now travel to Denver at least once a year specifically to get our green chili fix at El Tejado and a couple other restaurants. On busy days the hostesses are hateful from the first interactions. The waitress who's named Narcedalia is very rude and will not serve you unless you tip her big. She won't even take an order for more than 20 minutes if you are there on a busy day. Management condones all the actions of the hateful hostessess and rude waitresses, they look at us native Coloradans as replaceable customers. We need to replace them! read more

Loved this place for around 15 years, until Pandemic hit! We have tried to support El Tejado by getting To-Go orders and unfortunately, have been disappointed every time. I just ordered 3 Crunchy Tacos w/ Beans & Rice and a Smothered Bean Burrito. The Tacos were soaked and tasted like dish water, the Beans tasted burned. the Burrito was small with not much green chili. The last time I ordered a Carne Asada Burrito, The steak was overcooked, chewy and gristly. My BIGGEST Disappointment was to learn that my Favorite Bartender, Ivan no longer works there!! He was a BIG part of why we went there, the service and quality standard isn't the same without him! He was a workhorse, that made the Restaurant a Better Place! How and why I have not reviewed this place before is beyond me. Maybe I don't want you to know how amazing it is because it's already way busier than before. The drinks = amazing! I recommend going for the pineapple daiquiri. That's right! I'm wild and get something other than a margarita. That being said if you want the margarita 10/10 would recommend. The food is great and they have a lot to choose from. Pro tip; if you want brunch but don't want to wait I would highly recommend. It's not fancy brunch by any means but you also won't wait an hour so you decide. My fiancé and I ate here the night we got engaged and Ivan and Gloria are top notch bartenders. Come 'n listen to my story about going to El Tejado twice in one day. Weird, huh? It just turned out that I had plans to meet friends there for dinner and then at the last minute was also invited by different friends @ work for lunch. (Doesn't this make me sound super popular?). Here is the shorter version of both experiences. My lunch at El Tejado was just okay. I actually thought it was pretty pricey. Eleven bucks for three street tacos (carnitas tacos) with no rice, no beans, nada. The one thing I loved about El Tejado is their salsa - it has a really nice bite to it. One of my colleagues wanted a certain combination of items. She asked the waitress if she would put this together for her. She also confirmed with the waitress "this isn't going to cost me like twenty bucks, is it?" Sure 'nuff, when the check was delivered, she ended up paying $20 for her lunch. We had a similar experience for dinner. One server told us that all domestic beers were $1.50 for happy hour. But when our check came we were told it's just Bud and Bud Lights. So far today, twice my table has felt like we've been misled and overcharged. Careful, also, here: their Happy Hour runs from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Not sure who's actually getting off work to get happy during those hours - it's certainly not this working girl. So if you want three dollar house margaritas @ El Tejado, get here early. Bottom line for me: average CO-Mex food. read more

Just left The South run by NFL relic Jerry Sturn because the service was atrocious and the bartender was an idiot. The South has been on a steady decline for the past couple years, and I think it hit bottom.. Happened along this place looking for a change, and holy cow - what a difference!! Brightly lit, clean, fast, friendly and courteous service - AND - AUTHENTIC!!! The menu is diverse with only a couple classic American dishes to satisfy kids needs, margaritas are awesome, and reasonably priced... The bartender is very attentive, and not annoying in the least. Margaritas are not poured from a vat of pre-made mix and hand shaken for each patron. If you are near the South, drive the extra 1/2 mile, and come to El Tejado!! read more

This place is worth a visit for their micheladas alone--only 4.50 with premium mex. imports. I've had my share of them throughout the Southwest and Sonora and can attest that El Tejado's are among with the best, while being as authentic as anything you'll find in Mexico. Aside from the perfect mix of lime juice, clamato, and spices, El Tejado serves them in a large margarita glass, which allows ample room for ice and for the mix to stay consistent as you add the beer--I recommend having it with Dos Equis Lager over Tecate--and for god's sakes never Corona it. El Tejado's michelada is much superior in flavor and authenticity to that of El Diablo (now closed) where they use(d) an alternate to clamato and served up in a standard 12 oz glass. This causes the mix to get diluted well before the beer is finished. In addition to the extensive and modestly priced drink list, the daily specials are always good. On a recent weds, for example, chicken fajitas were on special for only $8.50. They were served sizzling hot, along with a nice selection of sauteed onions, green and red peppers, a plate of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeno, guacamole, and sour cream (for the gringos out there), served with your choice of corn or flour tortillas. The servers have always been friendly and attentive on my 10 or so visits and quick to bring additional chips and tortillas, as needed, at no extra charge--damn my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Some of the other items I've tried and would also highly recommend are the posole (huge portion for under $10) and the queso fundido, with chorizo. All have been freshly prepared and very tasty when I've ordered them. Although, the space and decor are not the flashiest or the hippest, it is El Tejado's food and service that consistently hit the mark. And, after all, isn't that what you really want anyway? After 25 years of experience and over 15 years eating at this location I finally am at my wits end. My kids have always ordered the same thing every time and when we eat at the restaurant we spend a minimum of $150.00 per visit! This time the new server made a mistake and put things on my kids food that they never ask for. They told us that the so-called chef would not replace the items for the kids and charged us an additional $30 to replace the mistake that the server made, you would think after coming to this place biweekly and sometimes weekly that the manager would make it right this didn't happen! This is not customer service I've come from the industry I've been in the industry. I will never understand this! I will never give this place my money again please share with your family & friends so they do not get taken advantage of by poor customer service! I'm sad that this is how a place we loved so much could be so unapologetic about something that could have been a simple fix! We have never had an issue with anything up until this point and that is why we are so unhappy! They we willing to lose truly diehard customers over $30. A previous reviewer mentioned a bad experience at 'The South' restaurant in Englewood. I too had a similar experience and found El Tejado via Yelp search. What a GREAT find! I sat at the bar and was promptly greeted and provided chips and freshly made salsa. I ordered the Chicken Mole dinner and a margarita. The Mole sauce was nicely spiced and severed authentic style over two pieces of bone-in chicken (leg and thigh). The margarita was made to order as opposed to pre-made and dispended from a machine. This is a cute little place on Broadway. Apparently my parents dined here YEARS ago while they were dating and now I see why! We were sat quickly and the dining room was nice and clean. Service was a little slow to begin with but it wasn't anything major. The bathrooms were TEENY TINY. I'm an average sized person, maybe shorter than average and I had a hard time navigating the bathroom when there were three women in there. I was washing my hands at the counter while my buttcheeks grazed the stall door. The house salsa... I have to say is absolutely amazing. I am a huge salsa fan, I've been making salsa forever and I could not stop eating their salsa. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET, EL TEJADO!? It's so good I even took some home. Probably some high quality drugs in there because I was in an unusually good mood after leaving your restaurant. I ordered the basic three beef tacos, they were good but I wish I ordered the burrito supreme. That had such delicious green chili and it was SO flavorful. Everything was tasty but that green chili was spectacularly spicy and flavorful. I wished I lived closer but I will definitely be coming back here again! We stopped in here for a late lunch last weekend - it's definitely a place to add to your list if you're in a hurry. Our food was on the table in maybe five minutes. I had the nachos, which were all right - nothing special (and I think they were called Nachos Special). A small pet peeve - my lunch companion ate much more quickly than I did, and when he was done his plate was immediately cleared and the bill was plunked down. I'm not sure how anyone can give this restaurant 5 stars. Maybe it depends on the dish you order but I ordered the Tacos Al Carbon. The meat had absolutely no flavor. Zero flavor. Tasted like old meat that had been reheated. The tortillas were too big. Absolutely awful. The rice and beans also had no flavor. My mom had the Mexican steak and she couldn't even cut the steak and she said it had no flavor. I tasted it to be sure and it did not taste good. Would definitely not come back. Food was wonderful, excellent service. My sister and I split the bill. Next morning we found that we had the amount for our bill taken out of our account ( fine) and we each had an extra $20.79 charge taken out as a separate charge as well. When I went to talk to the restaurant about it, they said they couldn't find it and it was my bank's fault, but since my sister banks at a different place than I do, I don't think so. My bank said it will take forever and they aren't sure the restaurant will refund it, my sister filed a dispute. So did I, but because it is a smaller bank, they were not encouraging. I am sad because this is the only restaurant I have found in Denver that has the kind of Mexican food I like. But the manager was not at all interested in helping me so I probably won't go back. read more

Spicy salsa, great ambiance, typical Mexican fare off Broadway. The server was so sweet and very attentive. I customized my entree and it was amazing! The outcome wasn't how I imagined it, but that is an even better surprise in my book! Only downside is that they don't offer the "white cheese" dipping sauce (queso) which I feel like a lot of Americans are often too familiar with. Easter Sunday. A rare opportunity to visit with or son Chris Harrison, his wife Brandy and our granddaughter Sienna...soon to be 12. Rare? They live 20 miles north, have busy work schedules and everything else evolves around Sienna's dance practice or performances. We were searching for a new place for our late lunch, then I recalled that Louisa AKA The Bride and I had picked up To-Go order at El Tejada a month or so earlier after a friend told me that his family had taken him there on his (90th) birthday. Obviously, he enjoyed it. I had told him that I'd be happy to be anywhere if I make to 90. I digress. The five of us really enjoy Mexican food and know that it can vary quite a lot from one restaurant to another, often depending on the part of Mexico a family had once called home. El Tejada did not disappoint. I recalled that my earlier take home was a Burrito, so I ordered Chicken Fajitas today. Louisa ordered a steak, as she had done previously, which she said was not quite 'medium rare'. She ordered a different cut of steak this time and was very pleased. I did not make note of what the others ordered, but each was happy. The others did not know of El Tejada but were glad that we chose it. The place was very busy, with a party of six going in ahead of us; that kind of day. Never the less, kudos to the service. Our server was attentive, most pleasant and even thanked a colleague for picking up the used chips bowls for her. That means something t me. The queso came out cold so we kindly mentioned it to the waiter and asked for something else like guacamole. The waiter never came out with a replacement and when the check came out, our bill still showed the queso. We mentioned the error and the manager Marcos the Narc came out to tell us that they were not taking the queso off. The entire conversation with hotdog head (he's bald) was him blatantly being condescending and implying that we were trying to make out like bandits with the queso priced at $8.95. The food was mediocre, queso tasted like your grannies azz, go down the street to Adelitas and save yourself an argument with a grown a-- man over 8 dollars. The server and the individuals working the establishment were sweet and attentive. Marcos Mr.Subdivision-wide (he's bald) if you're reading this, learn how to communicate. I rarely give five stars, but for years I have ordered Chili Rellenos the first time I try a New Mexican restaurant in hopes I will find one that makes them as good as my mother did....I have been diligent in my decades long search (30 years) Every restaurant feels they need to smother their peppers in some combo of sauce and cheese. Not El Tejado!!! The Chili Relleno is lightly battered and an equally light fresh sauce garnishes the side and it was so good. I have this weird Pavlovian response to Ranchero music... when I hear it, I instantly crave Mexican food. The Boy and I were driving around taking care of some morning to-dos when a car drove past blaring a traditional Mexican tune. The Boy asked if I wanted to go somewhere for breakfast, and I said, "Yeah, but now that I've heard Ranchero music, there's only one place I want to go." That place? El Tejado, about a 15 mile drive from our house. Shockingly, he agreed, so we beelined it over to our old haunt on South Broadway. This was a Sunday, so the place was hoppin'. Luckily, we seemed to have been spared the normal Mariachi band. I ordered my old usual - Chorizo Ranchero, which I've yet to find at any other Mexican restaurant in Denver. The Boy ordered his favorite - eggs divorciado. They were every bit as good as I remembered and we ate every bite. Turns out sometimes, you CAN go home again! read more
