El tejado is a truly authentic Mexican restaurant in south Broadway. It was plenty of tables and bar area. We have been able to get a table right away at the restaurant but the bar gets full during Mexico soccer games. The beer is cold and priced reasonably accompanied by courtesy chips and salsa. The salsa has a spicy kick to it and a lot of flavor. I was truly impressed with the quesabirrias , which come in a plate of three with a side consomé. The flavor was great and the portion generous enough to have lunch tomorrow. The service is fast and friendly . Will be coming back ! read more

Really awesome Mexican restaurant with authentic food and great service. We watched the Mexico soccer game here which was a fun event, they had many TVs and it wasn't hard to find a good spot to watch. I ordered the shrimp fajitas which were delicious, the shrimp and the peppers/onions/mushrooms were cooked very well. Been coming here for at least 10years. Have lived through all the upgrades for the place. All good, food is good, service is good. Had dinner here with friends last night, and looking at the receipt this morning, our Budweisers were $4.50, and our Cokes were $4.75!! I think that they have reached a dangerous tipping point in their menu pricing. Movie theatre candy is a good analogy. People buy their candy before they come to the movie because it is so overpriced. Consequently, sales go down. Lower the price and make them reasonable, and you will sell more. Better to make a fast nickel than a slow dime. This is a trend all over. No wonder people just ask for water or simply bring their own water with them. Wake up people. read more

My son and I have been eating at El Tejado for many years and have always liked it. We were pleasantly surprised on a recent visit to discover they've completely overhauled their menu. Both of us have eaten here within the past couple of months, so it must be a fairly new thing. There are definitely many items from the old menu still available, but they've significantly expanded their offerings across pretty much every category. We started with their always tasty guacamole salad. My son had the birria plate, which was large tender chunks of beef with the usual sides and warm tortillas to wrap it all up in. I enjoyed the fish enchiladas which were well seasoned and moist fish wrapped in corn tortillas, and smothered in a very tasty creamy sauce. It was surprisingly busy for mid-afternoon, but service was efficient and our food came out fast and hot. With all of the seating options, even when they are busy like that you never feel crowded and they never try to rush people out. Skip the birria. It's a new thing and not on the menu but it's the worst I have had. Big chunks of fatty and greasy meat and slabs of gristle and fat. Not the nicely pulled meat that I am used to. I found this place when we were looking for a place that had whole fish on the menu. We came in and decided to go the traditional Mexican route. I'm extremely disappointed with my recent experience at El Tejado on Broadway. The food, which is usually good, was a letdown, and the service was horrible. The mango margaritas tasted like water, and when I sent them back, the staff claimed that's how they're made, which isn't true. The burritos were tasteless, and the Chicharron on them was like rubber. When I talked to the manager the next day in the afternoon she was rude hung up on me then I called to speak to the manager in the evening. He said he made the margaritas. Inside was nicely decorated with a full bar and plenty of booths and tables. I really liked how clean everything was and how all the employees were dressed in server uniforms. When I arrived with my group for breakfast around 11:30 AM, the restaurant was about 1/2, full but when we left, it was almost at capacity. I had the Huevos Rancheros, while the others had a Breakfast Burrito, and Huevos Divorciados. What can I say but excellent fresh home made food. It's really that good. The chips and salsa really hit the spot and having house made corn tortillas just added to the experience. The service was great! Everyone worked as a team. I would like to start out by saying that we have been coming to El Tejado for 2 years. We used to come there as a family as least once a week together. We got to know the staff, and we have always had a positive experience. I am so disappointed to be writing this review. Today, we game with our 17 month old son (who most of the waitresses know and interact with), and they seated us in a booth as they usually do. About 10 minutes after we sat down, the staff began to push tables together to accommodate an 18 person party, right next to us. We were so crammed that our son couldn't move and felt the people behind us, as well as my inability to get up and attend him. It felt like a safety hazard. Our son was so uncomfortable that he could not eat his food. After a few minutes of him becoming more and more uncomfortable, we couldn't eat our food and we asked for the check. My husband asked for a manager to express our discomfort and disappointment. Dora, the manager, was argumentative, rude, and dismissive of us. Please also note, that she couldn't even reach my husband to listen to him because the tables were so close together. We have been coming here for so long, and I am truly so sad that this is how this restaurant treats it's customers. I have never been so disgusted by the lack of service, the lack of respect, and the overall safety issues at this restaurant. We will never be back, after 2 years. My son has really enjoyed our visits, and the fact that you guys feel that this is the way to treat human beings that come into your establishment is so gross. You could have easily moved us, you could have apologized for the mistake, or you could have followed basic safety state guidelines by not cramming 18 people into a space that they do not fit. We've been coming to El Tejado every time we've come to Denver. The restaurant is large, with a sizable parking lot and patio. It does tend to get crowded on weekends but we've generally never had to wait. Staff here is very friendly and efficient. The food is pretty usual Mexican fare, but we love the green chili here. El Tejado serves it thin more like a stew, and it's very tomato-y with very little meat. The chili packs some serious heat if you order it spicy, so beware! Food portions come pretty large, and the first chips and salsa is free for the table. All the burritos come smothered and have a healthy filling of protein and beans without too much filler. Was recommended to try this place out and I was not disappointed. I wish I could do 3.5 stars. To me 3 stars is good and 4 is great. They have plenty of parking- so don't worry about street parking. We were sat in the front of the room, when I had to use the restroom, I had no idea how big this place is. The bar seemed to be more of a vibe. They had huge tvs everywhere to watch the games and enjoy dinner. The host was very welcoming and sweet girls. Our server was good, he was attentive. Only thing is I wished was he told us the Molcajete was a big portion of- enough for us to share, because I would of loved to get an appetizer or a different entree to try as well. They have a an extensive menu, lots to chose from. When we were leaving I did read a sign that the molcajete are made for 2. But it's okay just meant we had leftovers for the next day. For the entree it was good, I do wish there was more of the sauce in the bowl. Besides that, no complaint. The small margarita I ordered was a decent size for a small. And they are not stingy on the alcohol, I had a nice buzzed after dinner which is the best feeling. I def would come back for this meal or to try other dishes. read more

If I could do negative stars I would. I got very sick from eating and drinking at el tejado. I suspect I was served well when I ordered their Cadillac margaritas. While I was at the bar drinking my margarita I saw a cockroach run across the bar top! Overall a bad experience even my food was overcooked. Not going back there ever again! read more

I have now been here a few times. A friend recommended it, as it has been a staple in her family. The friend and I met the first time together - I got the salad and was under-whelmed. But I have now been back a couple times and have been happy every time. The first time I went solo, I sat at the bar - the bartender is very friendly and helpful. They give you chips and salsa automatically and I LOVE their salsa. It has a serious kick and I love it. When my nose is watering but I can still taste the salsa, that is my idea of a delicious salsa! I ordered the tacos al carbon the first time - and then the second time I ordered the Pollo Asado (though I think he gave me the bistec pollo). It was nevertheless delicious, and now I can look forward to actually having the pollo asado. Everything is fresh and delicious. I recommend!! Oh, and the prices are very, very good. El Tejado has been a staple along South Broadway for as long as I can remember. I have been visiting this family owned establishment for over 28 years. The parking lot is always full and the when you enter the restaurant, you are always greeted with a smile. The food is delicious and if you don't have the time to dine in, they offer to go, which is also good. They make all their food from scratch...right down to the tortillas. I like to try different items from their extensive menu. I have enjoyed all the menu choices thus far. On this visit I ordered the *Red Snapper Plate. This fish is traditionally served deep fried. On this particular day, the fish was so large that it fed the three of us, with additional orders of rice. The chicken fajitas and carne asada had to be boxed up to take home as we were full. The homemade corn tortillas were so good and now I can never eat store bought, again! The fish was fried just perfectly. It was still flakey and delicious. We drank horchata that was perfectly made. And ended our meal with a traditionally made flan. Be sure to ask for a side plate for your fish bones and extra napkins, as you will be using your hands to pull this fish apart. El Tejado also has menudo available daily, which makes it a super plus instead of having to wait till Saturday or Sunday like most other places. Their Pozole is out of this world and is so flavorful. It is often my go to. The waiters and waitresses are courteous and helpful. If you need to modify anything, just let them know and they are happy to accommodate. They have a bar and televisions throughout, so you won't miss a soccer or football game. As well, you can hear traditional Mexican music playing in the background.
