after ripping a "Creative" Mexican (World Top 50 List) restaurant a new one, it had me thinking, what's my favorite? then I realized I hadn't left a review for my favorite Mexican joint??? (yes, I know comparing a taco joint to a fine-dining place is apples vs oranges... but so be it) Tenampa is one of those gems... walk past the deli in the front to the counter in the back... order 3-4 tacos (depending on how hungry you are... but generally the "small" are the right size for eating with your hand) I usually stick to the barbacoa (goat), the lengua (beef tongue), and the pastor (pork) But the Panza (goat belly) specials on Sundays are great... As are the dozen or so unlisted off-menu items that Mexican families seem to order on Sundays, coming straight after Church and in their Sunday best (helpful tip - best to not go after Church hours on Sundays).... Place gets busy and seating is a bit hectic... but it's well worth it - trust me. Free fixins bar is always helpful, but honestly, the tacos don't need them. Although there are alot of taco spots in Sunset park this place by far tops them all.. they offer free guca and this spicy pico de gao in a bar right next to where you place your order and that just tops it off! I am from Southern California and these are the closest to my favorite place, King Taco. They treat you well here and the food is fantastic. Tacos and Tortas are great. My first review ever!!!! I just really needed to express my thoughts about this place! I loved it! I regularly ride through 4th ave and have always seen the huge "el Tenampa" sign as I go by. Today my bf and I were thinking about where to go and eat, and as we drove by it again, I decided we give it a try. Walked in and you would've thought it was a busy Saturday afternoon (it's a Tuesday today btw) everyone was just going up and ordering what they wanted but we needed a menu. I ordered huaraches regulares and 2 tacos de lengua(my favorite) The wait wasn't long and soon enough we had our food. We made our way to the toppings stand you can call it and I added salsa verde to my tacos and also got radishes and cucumbers. When I took a bite out of my taco my taste buds thanked me! LoL the salsa was amazing! I'm usually a "pass me the salt" gal but not today, not here! Everything was on point! My 1 year old daughter had the huarache and she loved it! My bf had his caldo de panza and he was speechless. (Mostly bc we're having a heat wave and he was on fire!) lmao but he loved it! Since I moved to NY I have been in a frustrated search for good tacos. By good tacos I define the taste and texture the same as in Mexico. Which I thought was an utopian illusion until some friends took me to the Tenampa. The gods answer my prayers! the best tripe tacos ever! Those are my favorite however for those who does not share the gourmet for what appear to be exotic parts of the cow in this country. They have a great variety of meats and cactus if you vegan. Other common choices like pastor, barbacoa, carne asada, etc. And don't forget the Salsa! the flavor and texture are perfect a little mild for my taste but we are in the USA After all. El Tenampa looks a little seedy on the outside, but you know it's authentic when you walk in and there are aisles of Mexican products, produce, candy, and in the way back there's a counter where you can order tortas, enchiladas, burritos, and tacos. Oh and they even give you enough containers to fill up on guacamole (no extra $$ like at chipotle) and tomatillo sauce. Each time I go they change the prices which is bazaar because they see my face a lot. Sometimes they claim it's tax and sometimes they say it's because I took salsa from the salsa bar (which is included) and sometimes both but the price isn't consistent. They just make up a price on the spot and don't show me any proof from a receipt. They have no idea how much salsa I took as the place is packed. I didn't take much and I don't eat meat so l already eat less than others for the same price. This lady before me took 8 containers of guacamole on the side to go without any extra charge. They didn't seem to change the price for others but perhaps they are taking advantage of me for having a different background. Whatever the case, it was disappointing because I was really starting to like the place. Update today months later: I don't know why I went back but I gave it another shot. The lady at the desk gave me 5 small containers to pack salsa to go. I didn't ask for that many. So I packed the salsa. She asked me to give them to her to put in the bag. Without me realizing it she threw away 2 of the containers. When I got home I thought that was bazaar so I asked her later. She then said her manager made her do it. She has a real attitude about it. I just wanted to know why she also was sneaky and weird about it. She gave all the other customers more containers than me for each person and she took away from me when I ordered 2 separate meals and the salsa was to share with my husband. When I asked later after finding out, she claimed we weren't allowed to have that many. So freaking weird. Why didn't she just tell me? Why did she give me that many? Why do the others get more then me and pay less each time!? They are so sneaky and stingy with me just because I'm not a local. They have an issue with new ppl or "different" looking ppl. Very surprised to find this place hiding behind a mexican deli. Looks unassuming from the outside, but dont be fooled, the food is delicious! The tacos are great and the shrimp soup is the best shrimp soup I have had from a mexican restaurant.
