    Chili Verde Burrito

My friend lives in Whittier and invited me to join her for lunch at this nearly opened restaurant. It was fairly busy, it's good to see that the community is supporting them during this soft-opening phase. The have combo plates, and specialty dishes to choose from. We shared a Hollenbeck burrito with pork (instead of beef). The food was delicious and filling, just like the original location in Los Angeles. Our server was quick with taking orders, bringing water and drinks, we received service with a smile. Please note that Chips and Salsa are not complimentary, they must be ordered if you want to snack before your meal is served. Parking can be a challenge since this area has several restaurant and boutiques. I parked in an open "public" lot one block East of the restaurant. There is no charge for two-or-three hours, read the sign to avoid getting a parking citation! Sincerely, Rosemary

Delicious food with the same exact recipe of the original tepeyac restaurant in ELA. It was a lively, happy atmosphere, and our server was excellent

Tried this on a Friday afternoon for lunch and it was delicious. The burrito was packed with meat and there was lots of flavor. The service was great and the ambiance was chill. The chips and salsa could use some improvement the chips werte stale but it is still their soft opening. The place was packed but food came out pretty quickly.

Welcome to Whittier! The food offered at this location is the perfect amount of choices Pretty much a greatest hits. The restaurant is very clean and the space is big enough to accommodate a good amount of customers. The food is delicious and very nostalgic. My go to is always a Hollenbeck with on top and a Horchata. Ingredients are fresh and well seasoned. The service is fast and the staff is friendly and accommodating. I will be back .

According to our waiter, this location has been in soft opening status for nearly 3 weeks, and grand opening is coming next week. I would have thought that the ordering and cooking bugs would have been worked out by now, but not yet. The issues began as soon as we sat down. Two baskets of chips were placed on our table, (for three of us), but no salsa. We had to wait for that. Then drinks came out haphazardly and with a good amount of time between each of ours. We never got the water we requested. Finally, my dad got his food first. Then awhile later my wife got served. I asked them to start eating because I didn't want their food to get cold. I waited and waited and finally had to flag the waiter down again, and it appeared he forgot that I had ordered too. I noticed other tables getting served piecemeal as well. When my burrito finally came it was ok, nothing to write home about. It was about $100 for two Hollenbeck burritos, a plate of Huevos Rancheros, three soft drinks, and a tip. I would hope the management reads these reviews and hires and trains more servers; cook or cooks; and bussers before the grand opening next week. Also, it is important for management to understand that my dad and many of the other customers are clearly senior citizens (probably with fond memories of the original location) who were all having a hard time with seating because the entire restaurant has only high top tables with really high chairs, and several customers were struggling to get up and down from these chairs. This could be dangerous. Because of this, I would say restaurant does not seem to be ADA-compliant at this time, but hopefully they will provide regular tables for seniors and disabled customers by the grand opening. In summary, we will simply take my dad to the original location if/when he wants to get his ETC fix.

The food was just like the original. Simply delicious. Service was great and the place was clean with 3 big screen tv's. We watched the Dodger game.

My parents would go to the El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights when they were dating and continued with taking my sister and I since we were little kids. So were are happy this location has opened up which is closer to us! This location is cute and a decent size. I love the big windows you can sit in front of and see the Main Street. Waitress was really nice and provided good service! Food was good but seems little tweaks have been made to some things. Rice seemed to have more of a heavy garlic smell / taste. I ordered the enchilada plate and it was delicious but they did go very light on the sauce, so we had to ask for more sauce on the side. El Tepeyac is known for its sauce or other great things of course. I know they're new and have to ride the wave but just wanted to give a little input on the sauce. I asked for more soda and the waitress asked me to remove my straw, so she can take my cup and provide a refill. Thought that was kinda of weird because why not just give me a brand new cup? So I had to hold my straw on a napkin so it doesn't touch food or the table. I'll add photos of Whittier vs Boyle heights plate.

Authentic Manny's food and immediate fit in. Lucked out in stepping with Mom for Mothers day yesterday with 'Live Mariachis' in attendance, for that special day. Only drawback is table seating is that of high chairs (elderly) and unexpectedly chips and salsa not complimentary. Will certainly head back. The front door was open and the Mariachi's hitten it (the Singing & Instruments!) to the street and noticed that El Tepeyac was to different for 'thee' Whittier Hispanics and other Whittier community residents' taste passing by there. If your new authentic Mexican cuisine and type of Mexican meat (the food!), The Hollenbeck Burrito, with chunks of red beef blocks/shredded is where want to start at. That meat makes their main entrees and if your a beaners eater - request extra on the entree.

Good to see a LA icon make it to Uptown. We met friends here for dinner and were greeted and seated right away. Our drink order was taken right away and our server was very helpful and friendly. We were waiting for my daughter and her husband to show up and weren't ready to order food when our server came back. Unfortunately this meant we had to wait and get the staff attention to order. My son in laws nachos took a while to get served, we all had our food and he was still waiting. As for the food, the green Chile Hollenbeck is still the king. Tender chunks of meat and super flavorful. Tacos were also good and crunchy. Chips and salsa of course are a tasty way of getting full before your meal arrives. We had to take home left overs. All the tables and chairs are high tops which does make it hard on the legs after a period of time. Overall good experience good food and we definitely will be back.

First time here at this location, have been going to the original location in LA for years so when I passed by and seen that they opened up a new spot in Whittier I had to try it. So far it seems just as good as the og spot but I will say they need more people at this location. The employees look stretched thin for a "soft open". From the looks of it, in the short time I was there it became pretty full which is good but they do need help. Hopefully the owners see this and manage to get more waiters to help with the busy times. Overall I can't complain, food was delicious and staff was friendly. Keep it up!

    Chili Verde "Hollenbeck"

We ordered "Hollenbeck" burritos, Chili Verde and Carne Asada Both were really good, and good sized servings, we will be back !

    Manuel's burrito (oh so tasty)

Food is fantastic always. Prices are so much higher than the original in Boyle Heights. Only down fall with the Whittier Tepeyac is that I can't seem to find a phone number.

Chicharone starter with fresh guacamole. Rinds still crackling on the table they are so fresh. Great with salsa also.

The idea was to enjoy my coffee while getting organized--paying bills, planning calendar events, and having the opportunity to focus without any distractions from my usual surroundings. In search of the perfect spot, I turned to Yelp, a reliable resource for uncovering hidden gems nearby. Upon stepping into the coffee shop, I was immediately greeted with warm hospitality, setting the tone for a delightful experience. The ambiance of the place was truly captivating--it was bright and welcoming, infused with an aesthetic charm that instantly put me at ease. I couldn't help but be intrigued by the design elements throughout the shop, which added an inviting touch to its overall atmosphere. Before I settled in, I asked the staff if I could snap a few photos to capture the essence of this delightful space. They graciously welcomed my request, and I was shown to my table, which, quite uniquely, was designated by a number--a small detail that I found charming. As I browsed the menu, I encountered a small conundrum: I wasn't entirely sure what to order. I wanted to break the mold and try something out of the ordinary. My curiosity was piqued by their exclusive offering of Café de la Olla--a traditional hot drink that piqued my interest right away. I ultimately settled on a hearty plate that included rice, beans, and enticing potato tostones, accompanied by two beautifully cooked sunny-side-up eggs. As I waited for my order, I noticed the café was filled with the sweet sounds of old-school music from the '60s and '70s, which only enhanced the cozy ambiance while I sipped my drink. Now, let's talk about the food! I must say, I rated the café itself a solid 4 out of 5 for its overall charm, while the rice earned a respectable 4 out of 5. The beans were rich in flavor and received a fair 3.9 out of 5. The potato tostones, delicately bathed in a savory red sauce, stood out with an impressive score of 4.3 out of 5--these are a must-try if you visit! And as for the sunny-side-up eggs, they were good, but hey, eggs are eggs, right? Overall, the entire experience was quite enjoyable, from the delightful food to the warm atmosphere. A special shout-out goes to Ana, whose exceptional customer service made my visit even more memorable. The combination of fantastic service, inviting aesthetics, and satisfying food truly made for a perfect morning retreat. I can't recommend this spot enough for anyone looking for a relaxing place to unwind and focus on what matters.

Even though the restaurant is small and busy, we were seated right away, which was a great start. Our waiter Washington, was fantastic, friendly, attentive, and made our whole experience even better. The atmosphere was perfect too. They had music playing at just the right volume and a big TV showing the live Dodger game, which the kids loved. We started with chips and salsa. The salsa had the perfect level of spice for everyone at the table. The kids ordered horchatas and were excited about the unlimited refills (something you don't always see at other restaurants!). The drinks for the adults were just as impressive. My wife's watermelon margarita on the rocks was perfectly made. It was not overly sweet or syrupy like at some places. Our friends had the "El Jefe" margaritas, and they definitely didn't skimp on the tequila! For dinner, everything was a hit. The kids loved their meals. Albóndigas soup, shrimp tacos, and street tacos--all served with rice and beans. The adult dishes were just as good. The carne asada arrachera was cooked perfectly, the chile verde was full of flavor, and my chicken mole was delicious with a great balance of spicy and sweet without being overwhelming. The portions were very generous, and everything came with rice, beans, and both corn and flour tortillas. The only small thing I would've preferred differently was the chicken in my mole. I personally would've liked a leg and thigh instead of sliced chicken breast but the dish was still very good overall. What really stood out was the hospitality. At the end of the meal, Washington offered us "holy water"-house tequila shots on the house--and it wasn't cheap tequila either! Then after the bill came, he surprised us again with another round of "holy water". That level of generosity and care really impressed us. We also learned that the restaurant has been there 20+ years and is family-run by him and his siblings, which made the experience feel even more personal. You can tell they have a loyal customer base--one couple even said, "See you tomorrow Washington!" The only feedback we'd offer (coming from a customer service background) is that we noticed a few guests waiting at the entrance without being greeted, and one couple actually left the restaurant. A simple "Welcome, we'll be right with you" would go a long way. That said, it didn't take away from our experience. Overall, amazing food, great service, generous portions, and a welcoming family atmosphere. We will definitely be back to try more of their menu!

I went on a taco run yesterday to try to find the best taco in Whittier…read more Started off the run with a keto taco mixed with asada and al pastor and then a regular tripa taco. Keto taco - toasted/grilled cheese instead of a regular tortilla - needed to be done a little more on one side as the cheese wasn't quite toasty enough to stay in place to slightly resemble the shape of a taco. Bit hard to eat, covered my hands in grease. Asada tastes almost boiled, and this being my 2nd or 3rd time getting the Asada here, it consistently tastes like it was boiled and not grilled. Unsure of meat quality or preparation, but there are no grill marks and it's a bit chewy. Same with the al pastor. Tripa taco was bizarre. Strips of flat skin instead of the usual roundish, cylindrical shape of tripa (intestine). Usually a saltier, fattier meat than asada, which is my preference but the one here was lacking in flavor and the texture threw me off a bit. Tripa can be chewy - unless requested extra done, which is how I normally order it - but there was no saving this tripa. I think it needs to be sliced differently, the cuts made it inedible. Brother shared some of his chorizo taco and it was the better of the bunch. Red chorizo, TJ style, although it was also lacking a teeny bit in flavor... onions and cilantro to the rescue! Still, mediocre. Salsas were ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Don't think the tortillas were homemade. Service was fine, cashier takes your order, dude at the counter was chill and had a friendly attitude. Seating was limited. Mostly bar style seating but the majority was in front of a window and it had so much heat trapped from the glass that it was kind of uncomfortable. Other seats are too close to the bathroom. Good for a quick bite or just pick-up orders. Wouldn't plan a sit down/dine-in visit. Parking is scarce and has really small spots, wouldn't come if you're driving a pick-up truck or anything like that. Food was reasonably priced, which is good, however; the food was lacking so I would not return.

We ordered all kinds of food and everything we had was good. The restaurant is clean and has a cool vibe, not super Instagramable but not bad. We also got two margaritas they were good and strong! A weekend brunch with friends brought me to Madre's Whittier, where the menu offered plenty of tempting options--and a few unexpected lessons about ordering seafood. I tried the Ensenada Omelet, loaded with shrimp, salmon, crab, and octopus. Now, I'm a seafood lover, but octopus and I aren't exactly close friends. I asked if it could be removed, but since the seafood mix is pre-made, the octopus had already RSVP'd to the party. The omelet was good, topped with a creamy sauce, but not something I'd order again. The crab appeared to be imitation crab, and while everything was prepared well, it just wasn't a standout for me. The real star? The strawberry pancakes. Delicious! Next time, I'd order those with a side of eggs and call it a win. I also sampled the chilaquiles, and now that's a dish I'd come back for. The Tiramisu Latte was another favorite--not overly sweet and packed with that classic tiramisu flavor I love. A special shoutout to our waitress, Annie, who was attentive, friendly, and made our brunch experience even better. My Verdict: Skip the Ensenada Omelet and build your brunch around the stars of the menu instead. The strawberry pancakes are the must-order item, the chilaquiles are a strong savory choice, and the Tiramisu Latte ties everything together. If you order wisely, Madre's delivers a brunch worth coming back for.
