So glad I was in Whittier today. Thought I'd try it. Why not? I am an old Manuel's (El Tepeyac, Boyle Heights) regular dating back to the ancient 70's. The Hollenbeck: Chile Verde wet burrito with guacamole inside. They hit it out of the park for me with this Hollenbeck. So delicious. It beamed me back to the 70's. It's massive, delicious and all that I hoped it would be. Try and share. Only wish it was a mini but I'll try not to be a baby. That wasn't a choice before either. In good time they'll expand the menu. They've only been here for a few months, I understand. The menu is small but they've only just begun. All the basics so far and even Huevos Rancheros, another one of my favorites at the old place in Boyle Heights. Very nice young man working today. Explained everything. Great food, but I'm here to discuss the behavior of the waiter that served me earlier today (5ish 8/25). Management can check who was scheduled at that time on the floor because I rather not provide a description. I had come up to the bar with my full cup of horchata for a to go cup and he made a comment "were you too busy eating?" and laughed which was fine, but I had shared that it was "just a personal health reason." The issue is that he continued to laugh despite now having more context. I just felt this was inappropriate. I don't mind some joshing, but the waiter clearly didn't read the tone of the conversation and acted inappropriately. Just distasteful behavior on his part as an adult and representation of the business. Hoping the issue can be addressed in house amongst management... and if that particular waiter IS management, then that's very telling of how they conduct themselves at this location. read more

It had major issues when he sold it and retired, but then he bought it back and got it on track before he passed away. Is it gourmet? No. Is it authentic to a region of Mexico? No. It IS authentic to Los Angeles in the 1950's. Try the original at 812 N Evergreen Ave Los Angeles, CA 90033. Born in ELA, raised in Whittier, and now back in ELA, I have seen half a dozen of Manuel's relatives try their hand at replicating this. I tried ETCs in Eagle Rock, South San Gabriel, and Puente Hills. All have lacked Manuel's magic. I really want this Whittier location to succeed. For that to happen, they will need to learn to make refried beans*, need to make the seating comfortable for both young and old, and need to learn how to treat guests. For that last part, here are some suggestions - 1) Be attentive - always look up, learn to spot guests wanting service 2) Learn the service rhythm - Greet and seat; Learn immediate (and profitable) needs (menus, drinks, appetizers, personal accessories, cleanliness, restrooms); Take orders; Deliver on immediate needs; Deliver on orders; Follow up on new needs; Watch for when to deliver the bill (and turn the table). 3) Don't be chatty (it slows everything down, and deprives guests of the chance to focus on each other and the food) Until that happens, people wanting a really good Mexican restaurant are better off finding the Greenleaf Cafe about 2 blocks south. * REFRIED BEANS DONE RIGHT - Rinse dried pinto beans and soak them overnight in water twice as deep as the beans; per pound of dried beans add 1/2 medium onion, 1 large clove of smashed garlic, 1 whole dried red chili, 2 tsp salt, and 4oz smoked pork; stew all that at low simmer for at least 4 hours; remove everything but the beans and broth half as high as the beans; mash the beans on low heat adding back broth to your preferred consistency. Save the broth, because refried beans dry out over time. Never use higher heat to speed this up, it ruins the flavor. read more

I've been waiting for this iteration of El Tepeyac to open since I saw the COMING SOON sign out front around Christmas last year. I recently picked up my nephew from the Norwalk Metro station (he had flown in for his sister's graduation party, and he loves public transit, so he wanted to try the new station near LAX) and we were famished after a fruitless errand, so I asked him where he wanted to eat. He wanted something "very Whittier," so I drove to Uptown, figuring we'd go to Rick's or my cousin's bar, The 6740. And we parked, and then I remembered El Tepeyac, so that's where we ended up. It's in the location of the former Ambrose Pizzeria (RIP), but I think this storefront has seen many different businesses come and go since that venerable Uptown pizza-and-single-arcade-game place closed long ago. I'll start with the bad, because there's more than there should be of it. When we walked in, a World Cup game was showing on all the screens. That turned out to be good for our particular late lunch, but this is supposed to be El Tepeyac, not a sports bar, and it feels like a sports bar. Except it doesn't, because it feels very temporary. The tables, tall chairs, gray paint on the walls, and gross floors all scream CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. The place has been open for more than a month. Why isn't there art on the walls? Once we were seated by a second employee (after the first employee looked at us and turned around), we were handed pieces of what looked and felt like photocopy paper with approximately eight menu choices on one side. Again, this is supposed to be a restaurant. Hand us good old booklet menus or laminated single-pagers--if you must--but printed pieces of paper, done cheaply, quickly, and with no sense of style or spacing? Again, I expect a lot more from El Tepeyac. Our server, who wasn't the guy who brought us our drinks, who himself was the guy who had ignored us when we walked in, informed me when I asked that yes, this El Tepeyac is related to the original, while the Crossroads location no longer is. So that's a distinction, and one with a difference so big that one-time owner Manuel Rojas is probably turning over in his grave at what his descendants have done to the good name of his restaurant. I ordered a cheese-enchilada combo plate, and my nephew ordered a Hollenbeck Burrito. The server helpfully pointed out to my nephew that it's a wet burrito, which he was fine with. I always forget how young he is, so I forgot to tell him how big the Hollenbeck Burritos are. He ended up taking about half of it home. The food is excellent and is definitely worthy of the restaurant's name. Our server was nice and attentive after being a bit squirrely at first. I don't think I'd return unless there was a game I really wanted to watch. Because of the hard edges, high ceiling, and cramped space, it gets really loud in here. We sat with our backs to the main windows, which were open because it was a very hot day. That was pleasant, but I saw only about three tables total that I'd enjoy sitting at. read more

This is a brand new location and according to one of the servers it opened in April. I wasn't aware that this place is somehow connected to the El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights. As stated, this place is fairly new, the menu was on a sheet of paper- I ordered taquitos and it was decent. I asked for chips and they told me it was extra- when is chips extra at a Mexican restaurant- I didn't care- service was lacking- two of the servers couldn't pour beer cause they weren't "certified" yet so it was a wait. We shared a Hollenbeck burrito with pork (instead of beef). The food was delicious and filling, just like the original location in Los Angeles. Our server was quick with taking orders, bringing water and drinks, we received service with a smile. Please note that Chips and Salsa are not complimentary, they must be ordered if you want to snack before your meal is served. Parking can be a challenge since this area has several restaurant and boutiques. I parked in an open "public" lot one block East of the restaurant. Disappointing Experience -- Please Check Your Receipt I want to share my experience because I think customers should be aware of the pricing here. The prices we were charged were different from the prices listed on the menu. We specifically asked about the Manuel Special Burrito because we wanted to make sure we understood the price. I asked if the biggest burrito was $55, and he said yes. However, when I looked at my receipt afterward, I noticed I was actually charged $75 for the burrito. That price was not listed on the menu. I also noticed that I was charged more for the Mexican soda than the price indicated on the menu. I called to discuss the issue, hoping for an explanation, but unfortunately, the response was not apologetic. I was told, essentially, "If you know, you know--that's the price." I explained that we did not know, which is exactly why I asked before ordering. I was then told that he couldn't remember the conversation. If prices have changed, the menu should be updated so customers know exactly what they are going to be charged before ordering. Please be careful and ask about the price of everything before ordering, especially if the menu shows a different price. I am a longtime Whittier resident and have been ordering the original Manuel Special from the Boyle Heights location since the 1990s. I have always been a huge fan of that burrito, so when I noticed an El Tepeyac location had opened in Whittier, I wanted to give it a try. I stopped by on Father's Day to pick up a burrito for my dad. When I was younger, he would make the drive to Boyle Heights specifically for a Manuel Special, so I thought it would be a nice surprise. First, the good. The burrito is actually pretty good. While it is not the original Manuel Special, it is clearly inspired by it and comes surprisingly close in flavor. I would have liked a little more guacamole, but overall I enjoyed it. The service was attentive, my order was ready in a reasonable amount of time, and they had the World Cup playing on the TVs while I waited. Now for the reason behind my rating. The menu listed the Chile Verde Manuel Special at $55, but my receipt shows that I was charged $75. Since I was there specifically to pick up a Father's Day meal for my dad, I chose not to spend time arguing about the discrepancy and simply paid for the order. What makes the price difficult to justify is that the original Boyle Heights location charges approximately $37 for its Chile Verde Manuel Special. I understand that different locations can have different pricing, and I wasn't expecting the Whittier location to match the original. However, being charged $75 for a burrito that is an imitation of the original rather than the original itself felt excessive. The burrito comes close enough to the original that I enjoyed it, but not close enough to justify paying more than twice what the original location charges. I've uploaded photos showing my receipt, the size of the burrito, and pricing from the original Boyle Heights location so others can make their own comparison. I was so disappointed with this place. The ambiance was fine, and the restroom was clean, which I always appreciate. However, we were seated at a dirty table that hadn't been cleaned, so it wasn't a great first impression. The food was just okay. My daughter ordered the chicken taquitos, and she thought the chicken was very dry. The beans on her plate also looked dried out, almost like they had been reheated for too long in the microwave. I ordered the asada burrito. The flavor was good, but the meat was on the dry side as well. We also ordered a side of guacamole, and it was served brown, which made it seem like it had been sitting out for a while. I understand that restaurant prices have gone up everywhere, and I'm okay paying more for a good meal. But when I'm paying around $20 for a burrito, I expect it to be delicious, not just okay. What bothered me the most was the service. When our food was brought to the table, no one brought us utensils. We just sat there looking at our food, trying to get someone's attention so we could ask for forks. Unfortunately, our waitress never came back to check on us. According to our waiter, this location has been in soft opening status for nearly 3 weeks, and grand opening is coming next week. I would have thought that the ordering and cooking bugs would have been worked out by now, but not yet. The issues began as soon as we sat down. Two baskets of chips were placed on our table, (for three of us), but no salsa. We had to wait for that. Then drinks came out haphazardly and with a good amount of time between each of ours. We never got the water we requested. Finally, my dad got his food first. Then awhile later my wife got served. I asked them to start eating because I didn't want their food to get cold. I waited and waited and finally had to flag the waiter down again, and it appeared he forgot that I had ordered too. I noticed other tables getting served piecemeal as well. When my burrito finally came it was ok, nothing to write home about. It was about $100 for two Hollenbeck burritos, a plate of Huevos Rancheros, three soft drinks, and a tip. I would hope the management reads these reviews and hires and trains more servers; cook or cooks; and bussers before the grand opening next week. Also, it is important for management to understand that my dad and many of the other customers are clearly senior citizens (probably with fond memories of the original location) who were all having a hard time with seating because the entire restaurant has only high top tables with really high chairs, and several customers were struggling to get up and down from these chairs. This could be dangerous. Because of this, I would say restaurant does not seem to be ADA-compliant at this time, but hopefully they will provide regular tables for seniors and disabled customers by the grand opening. In summary, we will simply take my dad to the original location if/when he wants to get his ETC fix. read more

My parents would go to the El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights when they were dating and continued with taking my sister and I since we were little kids. So were are happy this location has opened up which is closer to us! This location is cute and a decent size. I love the big windows you can sit in front of and see the Main Street. Waitress was really nice and provided good service! Food was good but seems little tweaks have been made to some things. Rice seemed to have more of a heavy garlic smell / taste. I ordered the enchilada plate and it was delicious but they did go very light on the sauce, so we had to ask for more sauce on the side. El Tepeyac is known for its sauce or other great things of course. I know they're new and have to ride the wave but just wanted to give a little input on the sauce. I asked for more soda and the waitress asked me to remove my straw, so she can take my cup and provide a refill. Thought that was kinda of weird because why not just give me a brand new cup? My son in laws nachos took a while to get served, we all had our food and he was still waiting. As for the food, the green Chile Hollenbeck is still the king. When the plate came I had to ask for the lettuce and tomato Iykyk. Size of the plate is smaller than ELA Parking sucks. Tequila shot up to Manuel in heaven. I had my tequila and Manuel had his Presidente. Nothing beats the original Manuel's. Yes Manuel's never called it El Tepeyac. Let's go to Manuel's and nobody questioned where we were going. 55 years and I've only ever ordered the Hollenback and taquitos never anything else. read more

First time here at this location, have been going to the original location in LA for years so when I passed by and seen that they opened up a new spot in Whittier I had to try it. So far it seems just as good as the og spot but I will say they need more people at this location. The employees look stretched thin for a "soft open". From the looks of it, in the short time I was there it became pretty full which is good but they do need help. They should rename this place because it has no resemblance to the original nor the other place. The menu was on a piece of paper that only contained about 10 items. You flip the page and it lists the limited drinks. This minimalistic style does not inspire a return visit. The price for food and drinks was a little high and the flavor was ok at best. I don't normally leave negative reviews because, as a former waitress, I know how overwhelming the job can be and that everyone has off days. However, my experience yesterday left me extremely disappointed. It wasn't just poor service--it honestly felt misleading. First, when we were seated, our waiter asked if we'd like chips and salsa brought to the table but never mentioned that they came with an additional charge. It was presented as if it were complimentary. Second, I ordered the chilaquiles, which were listed at $18.50. The waiter automatically asked how I'd like my eggs cooked, so I assumed eggs were included with the dish. I also asked to add carne asada, and he clearly told me that would be an additional charge, which I agreed to. I later come to find that the eggs are extra charge. I asked why that wasn't mentioned, especially since he asked how I wanted them cooked. His response was, "Oh, because normally people like their chilaquiles with eggs." I explained that if eggs aren't included, customers should be told before ordering. His only response was, "Oh well ya, is there anything else I can get for you?," before walking away. There was no apology or accountability. In the end, my plate of chilaquiles cost $32.50. Third, my husband and I each ordered an agua fresca. My husband specifically asked if they did free refills, and the staff replied, "Yeah, I'll get you one." At no point did anyone mention that refills were an additional charge. We only found out when we received the bill. To make matters worse, our waiter never brought us the bill to review despite asking for it multiple times. He brought his card reader, ran my card, had me enter the tip, and only handed me the receipt afterward. That meant I didn't have the opportunity to review the charges or question them until after my card had already been charged, which made the entire experience feel even more frustrating. What bothered me most wasn't the prices--it was the lack of transparency. If there are extra charges for chips and salsa, eggs, or drink refills, customers should be informed upfront so they can make an informed decision. Customers should also be given the opportunity to review their bill before their payment is processed. I've visited twice, six months ago and then today. I frequent the El Tepeyac in LA. I had beef taquitos and a beef enchilada. The first time I went. The sauce is not the same for the enchilada doesn't taste as good as the one in LA. It's not moist enough. The beans are not moist. There wasn't enough guacamole served with The taquito. The service was OK. I don't like the seating with a high chairs, not comfortable. Today when I went, I had the taquitos with guacamole and rice and beans. Hoping that the menu had improved. But the taquitos were not filled with enough meat as compared to in LA. And the beans were dry and the rice wasn't as flavorful. The prices are too expensive. Everything is $18.50. The food is great. The same as the original. Love the burrito and the Menudo. Diehard Manuel fans will make comparisons but it's the same. It's the same family- owned business. Talk to Andrew, a friendly bar tender and jack of all trades, chipping in on waiting tables when needed. For you old timers, Andrew does not carry around what the staff called Manuel's "apple juice" to share with customers, but he does carry around the same welcoming charm that Manuel had.
