While the prices are not bad here and the food good, the customer service was just poor. I'm huge on customer service and the waitress did not once check on us while we were dining. At the end we were waiting on a to go order and did not know we needed to pay at the register so we waited an additional 20 minutes even after asking if the to go order was ready. At that time all the waitress said was it should be ready soon and never let us know when it was. I wouldn't return to this one, but I can't knock the food. It was good. read more

Two things that you rarely see anymore are found in this place: quality food, and an affordable price. I had an AMAZING pork chop lunch plate for under $10. The refried beans were great, the rice was soft and flavorful, and the porchops were thin but well seasoned. I had this with a nice coffee. The carne asada plate was amazing as well, and the green sauce made it a spicy piece of heaven. I recommend you give this place a try. read more

This place would be a 5 star if it was cleaner. Meaning, it's time to remove those piñatas that are full of grease and dust. And the window seals that always have food on them. It's probably the little kids putting their little hands on their but maybe clean them when you clean the tables. I don't like that the owner just stares but doesn't help the waitresses. The waitresses are amazing, very attentive to your needs even though they are super busy. I think the owners kids work the register, they need to work on their customer service. Of the dozen Mexican restaurants in Universal City, I found El Toro to be the least inspired. Perhaps it's because it's the only restaurant around that's not serving "Jalisco style" Mexican (and why Jalisco, a state located in the middle of Mexico, is so well-represented in San Antonio is beyond me). I went with the Ellie Special, as well, with a cheese enchilada, chalupa, and crispy taco. Each of these is exactly what you expect - ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese. The chalupa was really a tostada, the difference between the two being that the former is based upon fried masa dough (not unlike an unshaped puffy taco), whereas the latter is a fried tortilla. What I received was definitely a fried tortilla. Beans and rice were forgettable. The only things that stood out in my mind was the tortillas, which were fresh, and the salsa was respectable. Aside from these, I don't think El Toro offered enough to make me a repeat customer. read more

Tried their asada y huevo taco and it was good. My son had their tocino y huevo taco and he said they were good. I'd prefer a little more seasoning but overall it was good. There is a beautiful painting of a lady in a red dress on the wall which caught my attention more than once. Susanna was very patient with me as I was attempting to speak Spanish. The only negative is that the salsa isn't that picoso so you kinda have to pile it on to get any heat. If you are looking for a casual clean place with incredible food, great service and unbelievable low prices this is the place to come for a meal. I tend to be a creature of habit so I usually order the same breakfast every time I visit. I love the Eggs Mexicana which is two scrambled eggs with tomatoes, green peppers, and jalepenos. It comes with potatoes, a healthy serving of refried beans and two soft tortillas. After sitting down at the table I have never waited more than a minute for the waitress to take my order and the food is delivered as fast as it takes to cook the eggs. The other day I paid 3.75 for an Egg McMuffin at a McDonalds drive through....this great breakfast only costs 75 cents more. Stop in, I guarantee you will be happy you did. read more

The place is clean. As soon as we sat down a waitress brought us chips and salsa and took our drink orders. Esme was very polite and attentive to us. She took our food orders as soon as we got our drinks and had our food to us quickly. Which to me speaks volumes about the kitchen staff. My wife for the chilaquiles and I ordered the Ellie special.
