By far one of my ALL TIME favorite Mexican restaurants and coming from me, that says a lot since Toronto is my reference point! The tacos here are all delicious and generously heaped with filling but my favorite is definitely the machaca. The beef brisket is so tender and juicy, and perfectly paired with refreshing pico de gallo. The guacamole here is also amazing - so fresh and flavorful, you really shouldn't pass this one up. It's a must get! On a recent visit, I also tried the Castillo, which was an extremely tender and fall-apart short ribs dish atop corn polenta. Needless to say, the ribs were AMAZING. I'm a Toronto-local but El Tres is a MUST visit for me every time I come up to Thunder Bay! I would say with 100% confidence that you should try this place out! read more

When I can confidentially say a place like burrito boyz blows this place out of the water, you know it's bad. We dined here last night from the high reviews on Yelp. It was a Saturday night and it was busy. It was about a 15 min wait for a table but we took seats at the bar and boy are we glad we did. Watching the bartenders or I think they should be called drink masters. Very entertaining and you could see they really cared about the drinks that they made. We had two appetizers - chorizo con queso, guacamole with home made chips. Then we shared a dish of the empenada. Everything was amazing. I really liked their variety of hot sauces. Went here for dinner in September while visiting my fiancé's sister and brother in law. They said they usually come for their anniversary. Whether you are a local or just passing through Thunder Bay, if you have any interest in foods beyond steak and burgers, this is the place you HAVE to try. They have a great selection of tacos that you can try all at once by ordering the platter of 5 (either one of each or all 5 of the same). My personal favourite is the Machaca which has juicy strips of brisket accompanied by a flavourful mix of veggies. Their guacamole is simply amazing and is something you must try if you aren't allergic to avocados. After trying most of the more established restaurants in town, El Tres is my pick for best restaurant in Thunder Bay. This restaurant is quite small and ends up packed every time I come here at regular dinner hours and I've had to eat at the bar twice. If you're not a fan of waiting and aren't willing to compromise and eat at an odd time, you can also call in and order for pick-up. No reservations for parties less than 8. read more

The food was ok, very cute restaurant. But unfortunately I can't recommend anyone to ever come here as long as the server, Nick, works there. He was rude, condescending and completely disrespectful. He couldn't even provide the bare minimum service. I could see him goofing off with other employees and then came back smelling strongly of cigarette smoke. Left a terrible taste in my mouth. I liked the food however some others in my group were not satisfied with their food, nice service and the restaurant has a nice vibe. The restaurant is kinda dark but you get used to it, the burritos are wonderful and the enchiladas were nice too, the tacos are delicious but are pretty small. Overall 4.5 stars. read more

Big On Mexico but light on the stomach. Heck my days of volume eating= good deal are over, due to being older . Being wiser (due to getting older) my days of rating food by quality is going up independent of volume ..well kinda. El Tres is as authentic as you can get outside of mexico but then again good mexican food is not hard to find outside of mexico. Went here with 5 ladies with different food tastes. I had a few fish tacos which were very yummy, the salsa was wonderfull. However I would have needed two orders to fill my now limited by age "gut space". To that end i had to feign interest in what other people were eating, with the obligatory " no i just couldn't " to their offers of a taste. Then had to raid my wifes dish to take away the hunger need. But the food was fresh, fresh, fresh. The attentive wait staff impeccably explained the dishes, a but of free food guidery there. Beers on tap were good, with local brews available=plus plus. All in all , a must try for foodies. A little adventurous for the conservative eater but not by much. read more

We had a GREAT experience at El Tres. Our servicer Jordan was excellent, the food was amazing (seriously delicious!) and we will look forward to coming back next time we're in Thunder Bay! The guacamole is definitely worth having (so good). The Machaca Taco was delicious and the Pollo Taco was superb! I highly recommend El Tres and I'm looking forward to telling my TB friends (and others) all about it!! read more
