By far the best restaurant in Marion County, AL. And the only Mexican food place that actually has salsa and not tomato sauce!

Absolutely my favorite place to eat in north Alabama. Friendly service and their food is great!…read moreTheir ribeye is my favorite. The "Southern charm" and a "country atmosphere" on top of the great food makes Woodpecker's a wonderful place to eat. My hat's off to Cynthia (the owner). She works very hard to make it all come together!

I've know of this place for a few years now. I pass through the small community often and see the…read moresmall sign on main highway. I've looked it up and read the reviews and looked at pictures of the food. Today, the wife and I decided to drive down here to try it out. This place is well out in the middle of nowhere. In fact, you drive up and around to the road dead ends into the parking lot. It sits up on top of a hill, which overlooks a couple of ponds. It is secluded, in has many trees around to block the view. The place doesn't look like it's anything special. Even inside, it's not very impressive. Very plain decorations scattered throughout the establishment. However, I'm not there to be impressed by what is hanging on the walls or sitting around. I'm here to eat a good meal, enjoy a good glass of tea and have a very good waitress to see that my service needs are met in a fashionably manner of time. We arrive just a few minutes after opening time at 5pm. There are already several cars parked in the parking lot, with several more coming in behind us. Which is a good sign to start off as a first impression. There are only a couple places to eat in this community, so it wasn't very surprising to see the locals pouring in. We were greeted with a warm friendly welcome and promptly seated. Our waitress was swiftly there to take our drink order and got us started quickly. Our food arrived in a timely manner as well. I had the steak and fish combo. The steak was so tender you could stick the fork in it & pull a piece off with the knife. No cutting was really needed. The taste was very good and juicy. It was perfectly cooked. The fish fillet was very good also. My wife had the steak and grilled shrimp combo plate. Very large shrimp that was very good and seasoned great. The side salads were pre-made due to Covid restrictions. I'm sure if the salad bar had been opened up, I would have enjoyed the salad better by my choice of toppings for it. I cannot give a negative mark or review because of Mawmaw Ivey's orders. We also had an appetizer of crab claws, they weren't the best or the worst. They just weren't as fresh and good as we would get at the beach. The only complaint I could really issue is the lack of effort on the waitress not checking back with us regularly while eating and topping off our tea glasses. I will say they were pretty busy though. They had a line of people waiting on a table when we were leaving. I would suggest this place to anyone and everyone that wants to go eat there. They have a lot of great reviews and they were all led to great expectations from us. They didn't disappoint us. Get there before 5 pm on the weekend to get in early and avoid the wait. They packed the guests in very fast while we were there. We enjoyed the experience and we will return here more often.

Restaurant Review: A Second Chance Squandered at Grill 22, Guin, Alabama…read more Each year, my family and I make the journey from Florida to visit relatives in the quiet town of Guin, Alabama. With that tradition comes a recurring hope: to enjoy a satisfying meal rooted in Southern hospitality. Unfortunately, our recent visit to Grill 22 proved once again that not all second chances are worth taking. After a deeply disappointing experience in the past, the restaurant's management had extended an invitation for us to return and give them an opportunity to make things right. Regrettably, that gesture of goodwill was not matched by the quality of the food. If anything, this visit confirmed that Grill 22 remains one of the most underwhelming dining experiences I've had in recent memory. Let's start with the nachos -- or more accurately, a scattered pile of Doritos topped with lukewarm processed cheese, a smattering of black beans, and aggressively salty pickled onions. Calling it an appetizer would be generous; calling it edible would be dishonest. The chicken wings, which could more aptly be described as emaciated pigeons and arrived dry and sinewy -- hardly the juicy, flavorful bar staple one might expect. My wife's choice, the so-called "margarita flatbread," was equally baffling. It bore little resemblance to the classic Margherita flavors. Instead, we were served a sweetened tomato-and-cheese concoction on dough that tasted more like a school cafeteria experiment gone wrong. But perhaps the most egregious offense was the ridiculous pricing. Grill 22 demands a premium price point for what can only be described as gas station-grade food. The ingredients, preparation, and execution fall so far below acceptable standards that it feels insulting to be charged full-service restaurant rates. To be clear, this isn't a case of a kitchen having an off night. This is a systemic failure in culinary judgment and quality control. It's deeply frustrating -- not only because of the wasted time and money, but because no guest, local or visiting, deserves to be served food of this caliber. In a region known for warmth and hearty, soulful meals, Grill 22 is a stark outlier. If you're passing through Guin and find yourself hungry, I'd strongly suggest you take a detour -- even a fast food drive-thru would deliver a better, and more honest, experience.

The Farmhouse: Where Breakfast Comes Home to Roost…read more If you've read my reviews before, you know I'm not a particularly hard-boiled egg to crack. I don't demand gold-plated cutlery or waiters who can sabre a champagne bottle with a flourish. Give me solid food, a smile that doesn't feel forced, and a room that looks like it's seen a vacuum this decade, and I'll be happier than a biscuit in gravy. That said, The Farmhouse didn't just meet my expectations--it pulled a full-on "Avengers Assemble" and brought them together in a satisfying, bacon-scented breakfast epic. First impressions? Think "Little House on the Prairie" meets "HGTV on a budget"--rustic charm with just enough polish to let you know someone actually tried. The tablecloths are hanging on by a thread (literally), but the space itself is clean, comfy, and as inviting as grandma's front porch. Judging by the bustling Friday morning crowd, I'd say I'm not the only one who got the memo. The service? Friendlier than your favorite aunt at a church potluck. The staff had that rare balance of attentiveness without hovering. There's a sign on the wall that reads, "Come in a stranger, leave as a friend." I half-expected them to follow it up with "You've got a friend in me," Toy Story-style. Now, onto the reason we're all here: the food. Spoiler alert--it didn't disappoint. Mom ordered the Farmhouse Southern Omelette with home fries and gave it rave reviews. She praised the bacon-to-veggie ratio like it was a fine wine pairing and declared the seasoning "just right," in her best Goldilocks impression. The home fries? House-made and heart-warming. My wife went full Southern with the Hearty Breakfast, and it did exactly what it said on the menu--hearty enough to power a tractor and delicious enough to make you consider canceling lunch. She gave special kudos to the biscuits and gravy, which she claimed were "fluffy, creamy, and possibly blessed." As for me, I went for the Big Moo--a 10-ounce ribeye with eggs and a rogue pancake that snuck onto my plate like it was auditioning for dessert. The steak was a tad undercooked but well-seasoned enough that I didn't mind. And the tater tots? Crispy, golden nuggets of joy. I'd pair them with everything if society would let me. I was so pleased, I channeled my inner Ratatouille critic and requested a word with the chef. Chef John greeted me with the kind of genuine smile that says, "Yes, I do get up at 4 a.m. to make magic happen, and no, I don't regret it." He welcomed us back like old friends--which, by the vibe of the place, we might just be now. This, dear reader, is what I imagined when I dreamed of Alabama mornings: honest food, kind people, and a sense that somewhere nearby, a rooster might actually be crowing. The Farmhouse isn't trying to reinvent breakfast--it's just doing it right. To paraphrase The Godfather: Just when I thought I was out (of room), they pulled me back in--with another bite. Bravo, Farmhouse. Never change!
