I took my 13 old dog to Dr Owen and she was AMAZING! Unfortunately, we had an end of life situation with her. Dr Owen and all of the staff were wonderful. The perfect level of understanding and support. After saying goodbye to our sweet older dog, we adopted a puppy 3 month old puppy. We've taken her to see Dr. Owen for about a year now and she is just as wonderful with the puppy as she was with our Sr. dog. Can't say enough about her. She's great! read more

When my old vet died a year or so ago I decided to take my older dog to Eldersburg Vet. Big mistake! When you first walk in the place you see the receptionist and sit in the waiting room. Then after waiting 30 minutes they take you back to your dog room. Then you wait another 30 minutes then the Vet comes in talks to you for 3 or 4 minutes then the doctor takes your dog out of the room your in to the back where the kennels are so you can't see your dog getting the shots or treatment they need while you are in front of them. Not transparent whatsoever. Then they gave me a bill for over $500.00 mostly for tests. I recently had a problem with my dog having an ear infection and they told me it could cost as much as $550.00 just for testing. I said no! I can't afford there REALLY HIGH PRICES especially for a vet who is definitely not transparent! I decided to go somewhere else. read more

It has taken me nearly three months to be able to share this story, because it is still so emotional and painful to put into words. But I need to, because what happened to our beloved Dory in her final moments should never happen to another family. We recently had to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to our sweet girl. What should have been a peaceful and compassionate experience turned into a nightmare that my family will never forget. Due to Dory's rapid decline, we feared that us selfishly waiting, things would end in an emergency with Dory suffering. Something no pet parent wants. The day before Dory's appointment, we toured the clinic and were walked through how the process would go. We had recently moved so had researched local vets that offer the service. We were told that the first sedative would be our time to say goodbye to her - when she was calm and still herself. That's not what happened. Immediately after the first sedative was given, Raphael took Dory from us and said he would be "right back" after inserting the catheter into her leg. That "right back" turned into 20 minutes. No one updated us during the wait until my dad went searching, only to be told they were "having trouble finding a vein." By the time Dory was finally returned to us, she was screaming in obvious pain, with both front legs bandaged. Raphael returned Dory, placed her on the table, said "take all the time you need," and left without a word of explanation, and expressed no concern. So now we are in a room with Dory, she's crying out in pain, and we became desperate for help. The sedative had clearly worn off, and Dory was now suffering. My dad once again had to leave the room to find help. The vet entered the room with a needle and administered something into Dory. My dad asked if it was another sedative and was told it was for the pain. The vet then exited the room. My dad picked Dory up, and she went limp in his arms - lifeless in appearance. That is the image we are now left with, along with the sounds of her screams. The flashbacks are gut-wrenching, and they will stay with us forever. Here is what hurts the most: had the vet simply communicated to us that we could have waited for Dory to come out of that lifeless state before having the vet give Dory the final medication, we absolutely would have waited until she was herself again so that we could say goodbye - but honestly, once she came out of that lifeless state, we likely would have gotten her the heck out of this place. That option was taken away from us by silence during all of the chaos, and that is unforgivable. To make matters worse, the follow-up meeting with the clinic manager, Amy, only added more pain. Instead of kindness, there was coldness, defensiveness, and dismissiveness. She admitted both in emails and then again in person to major communication failures but showed no empathy or accountability. She said we could have waited for Dory to recover from her lifeless state to say goodbye which was the first time hearing that. From the way she carried herself, to the setup of the room with only two chairs so that she could stand over us, it was clear that our feelings and Dory did not matter. She had the nerve to say that "maybe Dory's screams were because she did not know us" and she immediately retracted the statement after we responded with disgust. She also had nothing prepared for the meeting that she agreed to. She told us she would do a full review of Dory's appointment, and would go over the notes with us during the meeting. She had no notes with her and acted as if we were inconveniencing her by even being there. I do want to take a moment to recognize the one bright spot. A red-haired staff member (I wish we knew her name) was the only person who showed warmth and tried to bring comfort to us. That kindness meant something, and I hope she is valued by the clinic. For anyone facing this difficult decision, please consider an at-home euthanasia service. Every pet deserves comfort, dignity, and peace in their final moments. read more

I will never go back to Eldersburg Vet. I had such a horrible experience. There are two stray cats that hang around my farm, and I only wanted rabies shots for them, in order to protect my other animals. My wife called to set up the appt for the rabies shots. The front desk was told on two different occasions (the initial appt schedule and when they called back to confirm the appt) that we ONLY wanted the rabies shots. We sent our 19 year old son to take the strays in. He called us after the appt to tell us they charged us over $700 for other stuff we did not ask for. He said he was never asked about anything, that the tech and vet took the cats and "did stuff" and came back at the end of the appt. I was extremely upset and called them. I told them we were very specific in our request for only the rabies shot. The front desk person told us that "they don't communicate those things to the vets." What office doesn't communicate with their other staff? When my wife spoke to the vet, they got very nasty with her and tried to blame everything on us. I don't think I can put into words how it feels to be taken advantage of like this, and then to have the staff try to put the blame on us. read more

The techs here tried to return our dog to us after a surgery without his 50$ harness that they had to take his leash off of to put the leash on his collar that it was clipped to.... I had to request his harness, their initial response was 'what?' Then after I told them the size, color, brand, style, etc, the nervous red faced tech went 'uh....oh...yeah...' and scrambled to find it.... Honestly the most disgustingly blatant attempt at theft I've seen from a professional office and still doesn't sit right with me. Do not take your animals here. read more

My first impression was that I found a home for my pet's healthcare. Upon arrival , the tech was condesending when asking me to put my 100 lb dog on the scale. After a brief exchange,he walked to a exam room as though I was suppose to follow him ( my first time being there). The tech could not figure out what the vaccinations that I was there for , although I had given him a list . He made four trips in the "back" to return with comments from the doctor. So I never met or saw the doctor, which was unprofessional. I dont know who was giving veterinarian advise. The tech stated that the doctor was tending to new pups and would be out to speak to me shortly . I never saw the doctor. Thius was a "Techician visit ". I asked him for an itemized price list of what care was suggested by the4 mystery doctor. The Tech returned with a whopping bill of $702.00! I laughed and told him "no ". The Tech once again went in the back, and I left. I stopped at the counter on my way out to see what the cost was for the tech taking my dogs temperature . I was told it was no charge. I enrolled in United Pet care to use this Vet,which would have provided me with 25 % off for certain proceedures. Do not go to this business.Do not use United Pet care. read more

I'm not sure about the bad reviews but our pets have been going to Eldersburg Veterenay hospital for over 20 years now. Ever since they were a small community vet in the little building on sykesville road they have been part of our family. We are lovers of giant and large breeds and have taken our Rotties, mastiffs and danes there. The care has always been good. Even when our beloved Niko passed a few years ago, the doctor offered to come to our home because we're having thoughts about his dying. So for now, we will continue to take our Khan ( latest Dane) there because we love the care they receive. read more

From the very first appointment with this place, they were very rude and showed little to no compassion. They do not have a very well animal aggressive policy in place. The lady at the front desk is unbelievably rude, always on the phone a.k.a. her cell phone. In speaking of her being unbelievably rude to me, she decided to put in my chart that I was rude to her. You will see plenty of negative reviews about the front desk receptionist, this wasn't just my experience. If they treat you badly, imagine how they treat your animals behind your back. read more

Brought my senior cat in for a well visit. He had also been vomiting a lot so I had that specific concern. Was presented with $750 estimate for blood tests and other tests. I stated I had care credit and did not have my card and was not sure if it was still active. The young lady told me they would look it up for me. I told her it it was active then go ahead and do the tests otherwise I could only cover $400. They didn't check to see if my account was active (surprise, it wasn't) and did all the tests. I was presented with a bill over $700 and told my card was not valid. I managed to scrape together the money, was not given an apology about the "misunderstanding" and sent on my way with a promise I would get a call within the next few days about my cat's blood work and tests. Two weeks later I still hadn't heard back and I finally called. I got a call back and told "good news! The blood work looks great. Give your cat some hair ball medicine and the vomiting should stop". Two months later after the vomiting presented with blood I took him to another vet and was told he had cancer and it had progressed too far to do anything. I had to put my best friend down 2 months after this vet supposedly did almost $1000 worth of tests that showed he was doing great. I doubt they even did the tests. Someone could tell me this vet brought their pet back from the dead and I would still avoid it at all costs. The least compassionate uncaring place I've ever taken my boy and now I'll never take him anywhere again because they said he looked great and he had cancer. Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital is not honest and their rates are extremely high, averaging as much as 100% more than another, very reputable vet a half mile down the street from them. I was charge twice as much for the exact same services and medication for a cat's recurring ear infection. In addition, I was told by Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital not to clean my cats ears to try and prevent a recurrence of the same condition. The other vet explicitly recommended cleaning the ears as a measure to try and prevent a relapse. I was also told by Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital that my cat had both a bacterial and a yeast infection in her ear, they would not tell me the truth about what was causing my cat's recurring ear infections. The first thing the other vet said upon returning with the results of the cytology is that my cat had a yeast infection and there was no bacterial infection. I don't normally write reviews of businesses I use but Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital was very dishonest about my cat's condition and seems more interested in having us come back over and over again at full price each time than healing my cat. They don't seem concerned at all about the cat's suffering. In addition to the extreme difference in pricing for the ear issue, I was given an estimate that I had to sign off on for teeth cleaning from Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital. The price started at $2,000 which didn't include pain medication and any extractions required so who knows how much more that would be and if they would be honest about the number of extractions or if they were even really needed. The other vet will be removing a skin lesion from my cats hip in a couple of weeks and while having her sedated for that, they are doing the teeth cleaning too. All for around $1,000 not including extractions which are estimated to be $90 each. I hate to think of what the lesion removal could have cost at Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital and adding the teeth cleaning I think they could have run the bill up to over $3000 or more. I'm grateful they were rude to me on the phone forcing me to look for another vet to treat this ear infection. Hopefully, with the fine care she's getting now, we won't have another ear infection to deal with in 6 months or so. read more

We have been going to Eldersburg Vet for many years. We were lucky enough to have Dr. K and were very sad when she left. We were seriously thinking of going somewhere new (especially when we got our new puppy), however we stuck with them and started seeing Dr. Owen. Dr. Owen is WONDERFUL! She has been so good to our pets and went so far as to overnight some medicine to us for our dog, while we were on vacation. We love Dr. Owen and are happy we stuck with this hospital. We have been clients since 1978 and in that time we have received excellent care for 3 generations of cats. However, we have discovered that the prices for tests and medications have become exorbitant. For example, the price for a standard 2-view x-ray exceeds $300 while the same test can be had for just over $100 an another nearby vet clinic. A medication purchased at Eldersburg for $59, after a 10% senior discount can be purchased at the same nearby vet for $26. We do not feel these price differences can be supported any longer. read more

We've been going to Eldersburg vet for 25 years and loved Dr. K. We always scheduled our appointments with her. She was very caring and gentle with all our dogs/cats. And very sensitive and loving when we had to put any of our pets down. She also made house calls. Dr. K isn't there anymore. Eldersburg vet has become outrageously expensive and I think the quality of care has definitely declined. We are transferring to Valley vet in Reisterstown. Even though it's 1/2 hour away, we've heard good things about them - and they got all five star ratings on Yelp. Nothing but the best for our little pooch. read more

Disappointed with the treatment I got very recently. I came into the office and the receptionist was rude to me, I just wanted to check in, as she could obviously tell, and just said "pet's name" without saying anything else as if I had known. When I got back to see the vet, the vet tech was super nice, so that was great, but the vet came in and only spent about 2 minutes in, and left when I was trying to ask a question and bring up a concern I had. I was in the middle of talking to her when she grabbed the door handle and left me and my cat alone. I was then left alone for 10 minutes, unsure if I should stay in the room or go to the front, eventually someone came and got me and said the medication was in the front. No one offered to help me with the first dose or anything. The receptionist that checked me out (which was different than the one checking in) was very nice. Total price for a vet seeing my cat for 2 minutes was $91 (for the exam only - my total was $130 but included eye drops). Very disappointed. read more

Let me start off by saying that Dr.K is the only vet there that I would trust to see my animal. She was always nice, remembered me and my pets, seemed to genuinely care about them and she was never pushy. She wouldn't force you to pay for things that weren't necessary or then try to guilt trip you or judge you when you don't. That being said, I set up an appointment for my puppy to get her spay surgery (July 2015), when I was scheduling the appointment the lady at the front desk never even mentioned that Dr.K was an option for the surgery, she only mentioned Dr.Schultz and another doctor. I picked a day that worked best with my work schedule, and it ended up being with Dr.Schultz, I wasn't super thrilled about her doing the surgery but figured that it was fine because it was a routine surgery and since she's a vet she knows what she's doing. The spay surgery ended up getting rescheduled I believe twice by the vet staff, I think because they were over-booked or something. Finally, I went to drop my puppy off for her surgery (she was always SO excited to go in there, it was flippin' adorable). I walked into the waiting room and sat down to wait until someone was ready to check us in, no one acknowledged that I had even entered the building until 5-10 minutes later after sitting there. Several people walked by the little opening/hallway behind the front desk and not one person even said hello or "we'll be right with you", instead they were cursing and complaining about other co-workers/family/whatever. After about 5-10 minutes someone finally came out front and asked who I was dropping off and I told them, they took my puppy into the back and I signed the necessary paperwork. I was told what time the surgery should be done by and when I should be expecting a phone call (I believe it was 3:00pm, not entirely sure). Later that day, while I was at work, I get a phone call from Dr.Schultz saying that the surgery went fine and all but oh by the way, your dog stopped breathing so we're trying to revive her and do CPR and we'll give you another call in like 15 minutes to update you on her condition. At this point I obviously began to freak and was a crying mess, called my mother and boyfriend and got my things together to leave work early. Maybe 5-10 minutes later I get a phone call simply saying that she didn't make it. No, sorry, this doesn't work like that. A perfectly healthy 6 month old puppy just doesn't go in for a routine spay surgery and stop breathing while recovering from the anesthesia. I graduated college with my bachelors degree in Veterinary Technology, and even as students we never had this happen and if an animal undergoing surgery started to show any signs of a problem we were on it right away to correct it. Every time one of my family members spoke to someone at the vet hospital parts of the story of what happened changed from what we had originally heard. They couldn't even be bothered to send a sympathy card or postcard in the mail. I decided to give this vet hospital one last chance because we have had bad experiences in the past with our other pets, but figured I would try a different doctor and it was a couple years later so maybe things had changed. I loved having Dr.K as my vet but unfortunately I will never set foot inside of this vet hospital again. read more

I have been taking my pets to Eldersburg Vets for over 40 years and they have always been kind knowledgeable and professional. A few years ago my aging cat needed assistance moving on to the next realm and Dr. Schultz was kind enough to come to my house and sit with me during and after the process. What a priceless gift of compassion. Most recently I have been seeing them weekly as they work to stabilize my dog's health who they thankfully caught in the onset of a chronic genetic disease. Dr. Owens has even called between visits to check in on our dog's recovery and offer additional tips for her comfort and healing. Dr. K of course is also wonderful, as well as the Techs and front desk staff. I cannot praise the entire Eldersburg Veterinary staff enough & highly recommend them. read more

Just had a recent visit with My not so healthy BFF Gus, they fit me into their schedule the same day, everyone was very kind and compassionate. The veterinarian Dr. Owens was very kind and took the time to explain the condition in full detail. She didn't over treat but was very effective in her diagnosis and plan to get old Gus back on his feet again. Her support staff member was also very nice and we left feeling we had made a great choice. My mother was with me in the visit and she said "I just found my new vet" for her dog too! I would not recommend Eldersburg Vet Hospital at all. Exam rooms are filthy and reek of cat litter. Enormously long wait time for an afternoon appt when the place is almost empty. No lift tables for older bigger dogs. Also, overpriced and unfriendly staff, that did not advise of charges first. Overall, not a good experience for a first time customer!! We've been taking our dog here for many years now and, despite her biting one of the doctors and being the biggest pain in the behind for them, they have always treated her with great care and treated us with respect. Never had we had to wait over the actual time given to see a Dr. Yesterday we had to have our dog put to sleep and the practice could not have been more kind and caring. After taking my cat to several other vets in Eldersburg over the years, I decided to try EVH. I was able to bring my cat in the same day to be seen for an illness that had me worried. The office was neat and the staff was friendly and most efficient. Dr. Owens and her assistant examined my cat and recommend treatment as well as made suggestions for future care. They did a blood test and called me the next day with the results as promised. My prescription was filled by the time I was done paying my bill, I felt the price was very reasonable for the services they performed and will bring my pets back in the future. read more

I would not recommend Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital. We have been taking my dog there for a few years. We have never been impressed, but not disappointed. Kinda neutral. We did like their hours. Well a few months ago our dog needed surgery. After drop off there was no communication. I was told I would get a call by 3. No call. I called to check up on my dog and the receptionist acted like I was bothering her and told me my dog was in surgery and we would get a call in about 30 minutes. An hour later, when I was supposed to go pick up my dog, still no call. I called again, received attitude again and was told to wait. Another 30 minutes I finally got a call. I was so annoyed I vowed to switch vets. Well, I just never had the time and kept forgetting. Until a few days ago when my dog started having pain and crying. I called to set up an appointment, because I hadn't looked into other vets yet. This was a Tuesday and I was told that they wouldn't have appointments until Friday. My dog was in pain and I didn't want to wait that long. The receptionist got an attitude and was very rude. I decided right then to switch immediately and I found a vet across the street who fit me in during her lunch. read more
