What a fantastic experience! I feel totally educated and have such a better appreciation for the origins of chocolate and the process from start to finish. The owner/chocolatier is a purist by every sense and takes the time to assist you with any questions. The shop itself is adorable and has chocolate you can taste from different origins of the beans (i.e. South America, Africa, etc.). They also have scratch-made bars and truffles that have been infused with different ingredients (like mango, lavender, vanilla, etc). Since this is a purist location, please note that you will be tasting/ purchasing mostly DARK chocolate (I say this in case you are not a fan of dark cacao). August 29, 2018... I was invited to an exclusive Yelp Event. Now this isn't just any ol' Yelp event. Oh My Gosh.. What.. a Chocolate Tasting Event!!! Ok, how can The Donut Kween turn down that kind of invite? It's almost like me saying NO to a donut! That is just not going to happen! So Off I go on a #chocolatewasted adventure along with a few select Yelp Elite! We were in for the most Yelpmazing Choco-riffical night! Eldora Chocolate is by far is the best tasting chocolate I've had in Albuquerque. I must start by saying that currently I cannot have sugar. This means White Processed Sugar made by major conglomerates, yuck! So I thought for sure, while I knew I was going to have a great time and I was going to be #chocolateeducated which I was thrilled about, I didn't think I would be tasting any chocolate! I think I got the best part of the deal! I was able to taste two 100% chocolates, no added sugars, nothing refined or unnecessary to mask the true chocolate taste! I was super excited when Steve one of the co-owners offered me these samples! I was able to enjoy chocolate with the rest of the yelpers! Steve and his staff are beyond extraordinary! Taking that extra step to help me be part of the group even with my current allergy to sugar! After watching Bean to Bars being made on an episode of Somebody Feed Phil (Netflix) and watching an episode of Chef's Table with Chef Will Goldfarb in Indonesia creating a bean to chocolate dessert (also Netflix) I vowed I would find a place similar that takes this approach to Craft Chocolate! And now I know I don't need to travel or leave the city to find such a place! The Eldora is located in the North Valley, just a hop, skip and some chocolate nibs away from my home! I am hoping they have future Chocolate Tastings so that I can take some friends and family to try this out! I don't think a lot of people are experienced in the Life of Chocolate! Most peeps are used to a Snickers bar from the nearest convenience store or a bulk-bag of Hershey's candy bars from Costco or Sam's Club. Steve and his crew are here to not only to create this chocolicious experience with Burqueno's but they are here to give you some chocolate education. Sharing with you the regions in which his chocolates are purchased to explaining the Bean to Bar process! There is nothing better, in my opinion, than the times I get to listen to people geek out on subjects they are passionate about. So last nights event at Eldora Chocolate was a huge pleasure from start to finish, and not just because of all the chocolate we got to eat! (more on that in a minute) From the moment I pulled into the parking lot of the beautiful facility I knew I was in for a treat. The building and the kitchens it houses are worth the trip in and of themselves. My visual senses were already enjoying the aesthetics of the place, before my taste buds had even gotten involved. Of course my taste buds did got involved very shortly after my arrival, as we were welcomed with a delicious selection of fruits, cheeses, salmon, crackers and bread from Fresh Bistro to nibble on while everyone got settled. After a few short words, and the chance to meet and say Happy Birthday to Annie J, Albuquerque's first Yelp Elite, we turned our attention to CHOCOLATE! Howie introduced us to Steve who owns Eldora along with his wife. Steve and his team walked us through each step of the chocolate making process "from Bean to Bar." And that's an important distinction to make, because not everyone selling chocolate is involved with the process as deeply as the folks at Eldora. Steve is a chocolate geek in all the very most excellent senses of the term. He seems to know just about everything there is to know about chocolate! He knows where his chocolate is grown, how its grown, what goes into growing it, who picks it, and how well the people who pick it are treated. He knows, because he's willing to pay 80% over market rate to insure that his chocolate is grown sustainably and responsibly. If only all business owners were as willing to put their money where their mouth is! Once the chocolate arrives in bean form at Eldoa, the team use various creative processes, and organic ingredients to create a wide range of scrumptious chocolate (including but not limited to; bar chocolate, truffles, and nibs). After we learned about how the chocolate was made, and after we had sampled a spoonful of the freshest, most amazing, Venezuelan chocolate I have ever had in my life, Steve led us back to the front of the shop. There we all got to taste test finished chocolate from a variety of sources around the world. The range of flavors we were able to detect in the chocolate was amazing to me. What was almost more fun than getting to eat the chocolate (I said ALMOST more fun, I'm not crazy...) was seeing how differently each person found the chocolate tasted. Apparently chocolate can truly be an individual experience, at least, GOOD chocolate, freshly and properly prepared with the highest quality ingrediants can. After our taste testing we got to go all free form about things by pairing our favorite chocolates from the taste test, with five great wines provided by local business, Vara Winery and Distillery. There you have it! The recipe for great evening. Take a small group of neat people who are really interested in learning, pair them with a business owner and staff who are absolutely passionate about their product, stir in a bunch of very nice wine and delicious food, in a beautiful location, and boom! Another great Yelp event in Albuquerque! I'm so glad I was able to attend this event! Now I have another place on my list of places to take friends to show them how great it is to live in ABQ! Eldora? More like, Adora. Ósea: Adoro, as in 'Adoro esta tienda de chocolate!' Translation: I LOVE this chocolate shop! Steve and his crew are really passionate about what they do. Like, really, really passionate. If a particular batch has any question as to its quality, it'll never reach point of sale. How serious is Steve about crafting the perfect bar of chocolate? We had a syllabus for the evening that outlined the bean-to-bar chocolate making process and a personalized tasting session. The fun part about watching Steve guide us through his kitchen and the process is his energy - this is someone who clearly loves what he does. He's in it for that perfect bar of chocolate, to hear his customers say, "that was the most [flavorful, complex, interesting, smooth, etc] piece of chocolate I've ever had!" He doesn't cut corners in his quest to create the perfect chocolate; in fact, he goes out of his ways to source cacao from ethical farmers who follow organic guidelines and then pays them 180% of the going market rate! As a small business, anyone will tell you that doesn't make sense - but Steve does it because it's the right thing to do for the planet, for our bodies, and for the chocolate. Before this evening, I thought I knew about the chocolate-making process. You open the cacao, you ferment it, you dry it, you roast it, you crack open the seed to get the nibs, you agitate it to get it smooth, and then you transform it into "chocolate." You see, I recently did a 'cacao tour' near Arenillas, Ecuador, where they make chocolate on a former drug lord's estate (now resort) direct from the cacao trees growing there. This is indeed the basic process, but there's so much more that goes in to creating that perfect bar! Aside from the many, many small details that need to be just right, there needs to be a lot of love and adoration - all of which are present at Eldora. After the bean-to-bar tour, we learned how to taste chocolate. Sounds easy, right? You eat the chocolate! Not so fast. If you've tasted wine before, you've probably caught on that it's a bit more complicated. First (as with most tastings), you want to smell the chocolate - is it floral? Smoky? Tannic? Then, take a bite and hold it on the back of your tongue and notice the different flavor profiles that emerge at the beginning, middle, and end. Some chocolates are quite consistent throughout (hello, Ecuador!) while others, like the Venezuela we tried, threw us for a loop, bouncing from fruity to floral and back again, finishing on a note of dark cherry that you only noticed if you stuck around til the very end. Bravo! At the end of the evening, we had the opportunity to pair wines from Vara vineyards (just up the road!) with the chocolates that we had just tasted. Different combinations of chocolates and wines (tempranillo & Tanzania vs Brut & Guatemala) would produce delicious profiles that hung out or danced in your mouth. Delightful! Before we left, we received a complimentary chocolate gift. I chose the lavender truffle because I'm obsessed with lavender. The truffle was divine - it was smooth, complex, and floral on the outside with the right balance of chocolate and lavender on the inside. Not too much, not too little. Well done, Anthony! What a treat! I attended a tour and tasting here. Steve Prickett, his wife, and staff are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about the chocolate making craft. Eldora Chocolate is Albuquerque's only "bean to bar" chocolate shop. All of the ingredients are organic, natural, and Fair trade. Mr. Prickett is very interested in only providing ingredients that are good for you, the farmers, and the environment. He buys beans from around the world and roasts them, separates them, and grinds (there is a more technical term for this) them in his own shop. You can buy a variety of items. Single origin 70% chocolate bars that are responsibly sourced from Tanzania, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Guatemala. (All coca beans are grown +\-2o degrees from the equator). The Guatemalan chocolate is very rare (only 5,000 pounds were sold) and it will be entered into A contest in 2018. You can also buy bars with inclusions such as mint, lavender (locally sourced), mole, pumpkin spice, etc. truffles, energy balls, and superfood creamers are also in the menu. Happy to support a new local chocolate shop that focuses on quality ingredients and novel offerings. The shop itself is fairly spacious and has a little seating area both inside and out front. Although busy during their grand opening weekend, we received great customer service and free samples of cacao nibs and chocolate bars that were being prepared behind the counter. We are enjoying our dairy-free "superfood creamers" containing sea vegetables and mole--two ingredients I'd never imagine adding to a coffee creamer, but both are very delicious. We also devoured an iced hot chocolate and coconut ice cream truffle during our last visit. We picked up a couple dark chocolate bars with lingonberry and mole to give as gifts. I'm also a a chocolate fiend, so when we found Eldora Chocolate searching around where we were staying, it seemed like it was a no brainer to check it out. THIS. PLACE. IS. LEGIT. I came here while visiting Albuquerque for the weekend and I'm so glad i did! It is the cutest gourmet chocolate shop. The owner was so sweet and gave us lots of samples to try and even let us taste fresh chocolate out of a machine they had that grinds up coco nibs. One of the workers told us how the chocolate is made and taught us about the origins of all the different fresh coco beans they use at Eldora. I ended up buying a couple chocolate bars and a chocolate truffle to try. The place is so clean and you can see into where they make the chelate from the front desk. First let me start off by saying this place is a little piece of light that you wouldn't expect to be so bright! While traveling we came across this place in the back parts of ABQ. When I walked in I was greeted by the most friendly gentleman who offered me a sample of one of the many truffles. There were many people there and this man singlehandedly took care of everyone in a timely and friendly manner. When it came my turn in line he gave me a free truffle with my purchase for my patience. The chocolate was the most decadent, finely crafted, and divine chocolate I've ever eaten. This is no Hershey's, not fake processed, not sugar filled, most definitely NOT mediocre chocolate. Honestly, this place is nothing short of amazing. This is the one of the only places in the country you can get chocolate as pure as this, and it's right here in Albuquerque! The owners get the actual beans from several, sustainable and reputable growers from all over the world. Their compassion toward the farmers' income, well being, and concern for their farms to be around long-term is amazing, and I hope in return Eldora finds the success it deserves here in Albuquerque. The staff processes the beans themselves, making this the ONLY bean-to-bar company you will find anywhere near here, how lucky are we?! The whole operation is spotlessly clean, thoughtful and mindful of not only the farmers, but their customers as well. There are no preservatives or harmful ingredients used to keep their products on the shelf for months, meaning this is the freshest chocolate you will likely ever have in your whole life, and certainly here in the desert. I had an opportunity to try a lavender truffle while I was here, made with, if I remember correctly, a chocolate from Venezuela and lavender from Los Poblanos here in NM. I will forever know what a fresh truffle tastes like now, wow, was it ever amazing! This is also the only place locally you can buy pure cacao nibs, which are a treat with yogurt and granola, or just to eat plain. Eldora is able to intercept the bean to bar process at many intervals to produce several health benefits, and cacao nibs like this are great mood elevators, as well as a rich source of antioxidants and potassium. Amazing!! I swung in because I saw a sign along the side of the road. So glad I did! First, the chocolate is made from raw beans they ferment and process themselves. The staff was happy to educate me on the process, obviously showing how proud they are. I don't blame them. Second, they have unique flavors. In one bar the lemon balances the lavender preventing any possible soapy taste they told me and they're right. See my photo. Third, great store front. Makes me want to sip on a cappuccino while nibbling in a variety of chocolates taps style. They said they can make coffee but when asked If they have a espresso machine they had stated no. OMG. For serious chocolate people. This place makes chocolate from the bean: roasting, shelling, crushing, mixing, forming. It is expensive but worth it. They also use local ingredients for mix ins when possible. Cute building, plenty of parking, staff is attentive and friendly. The kitchen is SPOTLESS. They will give you a sample of chocolate in process, if there is a batch mixing, so you can get the purest taste. Some people get really excited about wine. Others enjoy an aged whiskey. For me, it's chocolate that really gets me going. If I'm having a rough day or I want to gift someone that's deserving of a treat, My go-to is chocolate. Say what you will but there's nothing like the endorphins that kick in after biting in to quality chocolate. So it comes as no surprise that when passing this kind of obscure location and seeing a sign promising the holy grail, I immediately pulled in to their welcoming parking lot and even got a little giddy! I was pleasantly surprised upon walking in and being hit with the smell that can I can only describe was like a mixture of good chocolate and good coffee. I soon found out the coffee smell is what happens when good chocolate is brewed in small batches. Before I get to the chocolate, I'd like to give a shout out to the the interior of the shop itself. It's steel and clean and modern and very cool looking. I appreciated the smaller touches; the organic products in the bathroom (also immaculate), that smelled like lemons and lended authenticity to their organic, natural & fair trade products. The woman working behind the counter was more than helpful and very generous with delicious sample after delicious sample. If you can't make it to Ecuador, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic (places famous for their cacao bean!) or Vietnam, India and Ethiopia then you're in luck--that's where this chocolatier sources their chocolate from! Beyond delectable chocolate, I really felt a commitment from the owners to use local, organic ingredients to make their compliment their chocolate creations all the more. They use Chile from Chimayo. Their bon bons (which I HIGHLY suggest), are 4 for $10 and the ice cream is sourced from an organic shop in Santa Fe. Not only did I learn so much more than I knew walking in, but all the background information helped me connect what sets Eldora apart from other chocolate shops in town. Two tips for when you visit -- 1. They make incredible hot and iced chocolate and sell that product so that you can enjoy traditional Aztec drinking chocolate from the comfort of your own home. 2. They sell cacao nibs which are an excellent addition to your granola (among just one of the reasons to score a bag when you visit!)
