I had a very old cd player that holds 200 cds. It stopped working a while ago and I finally got around to bringing it here. When I walked into the shop I felt like I took a step back in time...in a very positive way. I don't remember his name but the owner opened it up, knew exactly what was wrong with it and gave me a price to fix it. Since I have no need for a player that holds 200 cds and since it's so old it doesn't even have any wireless capability I said no thank you. I suggested he fix it and sell it and he told me what he does in a situation like this. He fixes it and donates it. I found that so heartwarming. Randy may be the last electronics repairman in our area. When he retires the world will be worse off. He has been repairing electronics and computers for decades. It's a dying field in our disposable culture. If your item has a circuit board Randy can probably help you. If it doesn't have a circuit board he can STILL HELP YOU. He knows how stuff works and what things go wrong. So he's thinking of adding "FixIt" to his sign. Because he is essentially THE FIXIT GUY. When it comes to electronics, there isn't even a store in our valley that sells resistors and diodes and transistors and capacitors etc. Randy seems to have them in stock. Most importantly HE UNDERSTANDS WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW TO USE THEM and replace them etc. Before you throw away your beloved "vintage" item, let Randy look at it for you. Our job yesterday was simply unique. I needed to slow down a little 12 volt box fan. My husband the engineer, said we just need a resistor...but after days of trying to find an electronics supply, we were referred to Randy by Batteries & Bulbs. Problem solved. He didn't have the exact resistor we needed so he did the math and made up a grouping that works perfectly. FYI...there WAS a parts store called Sandy's Electronics that has gone out of business. I've been told that perhaps Greybar Electrical Supply bought out Sandy's inventory. So if we need a part we might check there next time. But at the moment I am thrilled that the fan is just perfectly functional without us having to find our soldering iron, solder & flux to do this ourselves! We highly recommend Randy's service! I have to write a review because Randy did such a great job for me. I came in with a old (90's) Luxman receiver that I bought off ebay. It had stopped working and wasn't in very good condition to begin with. He got it going, and totally cleaned it inside and out. I couldn't be more pleased with his work and I'm super happy my favorite receiver is back up and running. Randy is old school and one of the only people I could find in Reno who works on vintage hifi. It's a one man shop so don't expect a quick turn around. If you have patience you will be rewarded. Several weeks ago I dropped one of my small Bose speakers on the floor and it broke. The top came loose from the bottom. I took it to Randy at Electronic Repair Service. Took my 1978 Pioneer SX-650 stereo amp in to check on an issue with the left/right channels. Folks there went through the whole works and found it was just cleaning age related issues on the internal connections. They also replaced the lights. Finding a shop that respects and repairs vintage gear was wonderful and will be on my go to list for repairs as long as they are around. read more

Randy is very knowledgeable about vintage stereo components, and I saw a few fun pieces that were getting some TLC in his little repair studio. He did a fine job repairing my much-loved vintage Yamaha power amplifier that was stuck in protection mode. It took some fiddling, but he is super patient and doesn't give up easily. He found the problem and fixed it a lot more quickly than I expected - within two days! He's also really friendly, professional and communicative; he even packed the unit back up in its box for me. And explained exactly what he did with it. His charge was super reasonable as well in my opinion- just $90. I'm really picky about who gets to touch my stereo - my dad used to fix electronics professionally and is also a HiFi aficionado, so I'm quite spoiled. Still five stars; I just wanted to update that Randy was super sweet when he delivered the news that my super slow and spooky record playback could not be fixed any further. He left me with materials to restore the rubber on the existing (and very old) idler wheel, and recommended that if I did replace that component, I should seek not seek out a replacement that was also potentially 40 years old. I found a business online (thevoiceofmusic.com) that replaced the original rubber on the faulty wheel once I sent the original back to have it built onto.
