My recent hair cuts (5) have been with Marianna. Best cuts I have had in years. I look forward to returning many times. I strongly dislike their system for making appointments. They have twice charged my credit card when I requested to pay in cash on the day of. Secondly, when I last used their system I had a request to donate to a charity shoved in my face. Moving forward I will show up when I want a cut. If Marianna is busy I will wait, if she is backed up I will go for lunch then return. I am lucky to have a flexible schedule so I do not have to get caught up in someone else's mgmt/mktng scheme. Waiting for a great cut is worth it to me. read more

Just had my second appointment with Elegant Barbers on 61st Street. They are good barbers, however, if you book online do not expect them to honor your appointment time. My second appointment with Sandra was scheduled for 9:00 am when the shop opens. At 9:10 when she was ready, another client who came in after me, nonchalantly walked to her chair and she took him. I showed her my appointment time of 9:00 am but apparently this did not matter. This, by the way, was the second time this had happened to me with Sandra. She is a nice person, however, they desperately need a manager to keep the barbers on schedule. I strolled around the corner and had an immediate and wonderful walk-in trim. I usually tip $20-30 for a quick, 10 minute shape- up. It's a shame that they do not follow protocol. They did, however, cancel my appointment online, and for that I'm grateful. If they would honor online appointments, I would've given them 5 stars. read more

I've lived in NYC all my life and have gone to many barbershops over the years. I'm generally pretty picky with my haircuts and when a shop/barber works for me, I stick with it. I've been seeing Max as my main barber at the Park Slope location for the last 2 years. Thus, I was super excited to learn he opened a new shop in the city. He is a skilled barber - impeccable memory (knows what your "usual" is), consistent, quick, attentive, open to suggestions/changes, provides recommendations. In addition, he provides guidance to other barbers with his regulars, when the shop/he is busy. The Midtown East shop is beautiful - well lit, modern, clean and has amenities including drinks (I was offered bottle water on a hot summer day) and wash included in the price of a haircut. In addition, high end Gatsby wax (from Japan) is the hair product of choice here. The shop has 7 chairs and is generally busier during lunch time hours and after work (given its location). The price of a haircut is $25 which is good for the neighborhood and slightly higher than its Park Slope location. I usually make an appointment by phone but walk-ins are accepted. In addition, the shop is conveniently located close to the subway (59th Lex). I highly suggest giving Elegant a try read more

I tried to explain what I was looking for and he was dismissive telling me had my previous haircut was. Been to Elegant barber shop twice, and must say both experiences have been positive. Max is my go to guy. Like most the comments here, the man is very attentive, friendly, and most importantly, skilled.! It takes me a while to find a barber that i can consistently go to and trust, so when Max hooked me up with a skin taper, and I saw how it came out, I teared up, i was happy, i was relieved. For a barber cutting my hair the first time, he got it down to a tee. Doesn't rush, great with the scissors, good line up, excellent blend. Elegant Barber Shop is a relatively new shop in the neighborhood that is certainly a level above the competition in the moderate price range. The location is always clean, hospitality is abundant, and everyone seems to go a bit beyond to ensure you have a good experience. (For example, not rushing you, offering complimentary drinks, and ensuring your expectations are met prior to finishing) I have lived on the Upper East/Midtown East for two decades - and seen many shops come and go. This is one to stay. The staff there is extremely skilled - especially Tatiana, who I followed to Elegant after she decided to move on from her previous employer in the neighborhood. This is a full service shop: they do great hot shaves, precise scissor haircuts for more complicated hairstyles, to anything really that a customer could want. Again, the difference between this shop and the others is the space, cleanliness, hospitality, and the skill of the barbers. Tatiana is the best in my opinion, so try to call ahead for an appt with her, but, if she is busy, then I still believe you will be in good hands here. read more

They're experts with all sorts of hair, but I can vouch for their fades in particular. I most recently had my hair cut by Sergei. Elegant Barber Shop is a mini barber shop empire. They have locations in Park Slope, South Slope, Murray Hill, and now in the Upper East Side (check out the reviews, five stars all around). The key to the success of these barber shops is the owner, Max. He is a really excellent barber, and he employs and trains excellent barbers. I'll just repeat what I wrote for the Park Slope location: It is rare to have a barber that has both a good big picture understanding AND has good technical skills. You usually have to settle for one at the expense of the other. Not so with Max. I trust both his aesthetic tastes and his fading skills, to the point where I barely look in the mirror after I get a haircut with him. And I am really picky. A quick blurb about my hair. I have thick Asian hair, and my usual cut is a high and tight with a side part (not hard part). With my hair and this hair style, it is really easy to get a haircut with sharp edges where the sides meet the top. Or even worse, on the side with the part, some barbers will just go right up to the part with the clippers, so that it is less a side part and more Hitler Youth. Max has a free hand technique with clippers where he softens out the edges on both sides of the haircut. I've never seen anyone do this before, but it totally makes the haircut for me. So Max now spends most of his time at the UES location (every day except for Tuesday and Wednesday, when he works in Park Slope, he's the hardest working barber in the business). I have been getting my haircut at this Barbershop for almost a year by Sandra (recommended by a friend that has cut my hair for years and is on maternity leave). I have never left without being 100% satisfied with my haircut, the conversations and the phenomenal customer service given to me and the walk-ins off the street. I get my hair cut at least every 3 weeks and $25 for a men's haircut is so inexpensive that I travel to the upper east side from Washington Heights.
