The strange mockney name 'Elephant and Castle' had initially put me off visiting said restaurant. And it's Temple Bar. But, similar to everyone else's experience, a friend was raving at me about the fantabolous chicken wings, so in the end I let her bring me. Anything for a bit of peace and quiet. The place was fairly packed when we got there, even though it was only the early afternoon. The staff were very pleasant and courteous, though. I must confess that I didn't order the famous chicken wings, as I'm not that far gone on chicken wings generally (the idea of them is always much nicer than they actually are) but as far as chicken wings go, the ones in Elephant and Castle were very nice. Not sure that they justify the hype, though. I ordered the burger myself: very tasty, 11 or 12 euro with chips included, so pretty reasonably priced considering you're in a proper restaurant. Elephant and Castle was a pretty nice spot, but I don't think it would be advisable to go there after 5 or 6 in the evening because if it is as bad as it was when I was there at 2(ish), I can only imagine what it's like in the evening. read more

I had heard rave reviews about their chicken wings from the majority of my friends and family and although they may have been hugely hyped up to me, they were still a hugely underwhelming experience. I ate here twice during a recent trip to Ireland, once for dinner and the other just for a late dessert. The atmosphere of this place is comfortable enough, very crowded and semi loud on both occasions. I dined with a group of people, and almost everyone in our group was very satisfied with their meals. The one unhappy person had the Caesar salad and was not pleased with the overwhelming fish taste of the salad. The menu offered many interesting dishes, which was nice to have a choice different from traditional Irish fare. The service was very efficient, even for a group and during a very busy time. On the second occasion we sample man different desserts and were EXTREMELY pleased with everything that we tried. The Murder by Chocolate was the runaway favorite, but other delicious choices included the banana crepes, carrot cake and Kahlua sundae. This spot is in a touristy location, however it's comfortingly quaint on the inside and not as kitschy as many of the other Temple Bar eateries. Our server was phenomenal, friendly and informative. I ordered a traditional cider (mead) and he cautioned of it's strength and checked back in to make sure I liked it. I did. We started with the wings and they were great. I am a bit of a wing fanatic and these wings measure up to many hallmark American wing spots. They are a bit on the small side but it's a generous serving and they were delicious. We then ordered burgers which I found to be a creative take on a traditional hamburger with an irish fusion twist. (Curried sour cream). I ate at the original NY joint back when they first opened, and went frequently for years with friends for Sunday brunch. We enjoyed it a lot. But this one in Dublin is one of the POOREST offshoots of a place I have ever seen. I would be sorry to have Dubliners or others think this is the quality of food and service they might get in NY! The food at best was mediocre. Everyone around us was eating chicken wings, which after we ordered found out by looking around that seemed to be their specialty. Two things about that: our waiter never ever said anything about them, and, outside of a Popeye's or KFC, chicken wings are not a NY specialty!!! And the kicker of it all was the dessert and the hostess. We ordered "NY Cheesecake". A mistake. It was not like good NY style cheesecake at all, and after the first bite I think this one was a bit rancid. When I said something to the waiter - who basically was nice and just about the only bright spot on the place - and apologized profusely. Then the hostess came over!! Normally, if you've got good business acumen and the clientele has not criticized your Michelin star chef (not to be found here, ever!), you would apologize and remove it from the bill. I mean, for God's sake, it is ONLY a piece of cake!! But not this hostess! She defended the cake, telling us this is how it is (I doubt she herself tasted it, especially after we said it was rotten), and that we should just buck up and accept it!! I've been to Elephant and Castle locations in Boston and Toronto and wasn't expecting anything different when I walked into this location here in Dublin....however.... Much different! In Boston and Toronto, it's more of a "pub" environment, but this was more of a sit down, casual restaurant. Our server was friendly and fun and attentive. She immediately brought us our drinks and took our order. Now...here's the funny thing...when we were going through Customs at the Dublin airport, our customs agent insisted we go to this restaurant claiming they had the best Buffalo chicken wings in the world. He went on and on and on...not even kidding...about how amazing these wings are. Surely, he was exaggerating...but he wasn't! Holy cow! The wings were amazing! Stupendous! Delicious and incredible. They weren't too spicy at all, but the taste was a zing in your mouth. They are (let me warn you!) swimming in some butter, but you're not going to eat these every day so splurge. I will say, two people can share the order unless you're wicked hungry. We certainly didn't leave anything on the plate other than bones and napkins. LOL! We went on for Saturday brunch, or what the Irish term "it's still breakfast, sure it's only ten to one" and after hearing so much about the place, I was expecting a lot. Apparently, so were a lot of other people, because the place was full. The receptionist told us that there would be a five minute wait but this stretched into about 20 and we stood awkwardly in the middle of the floor, as dining mammies had parked their buggies (containing children) by the waiting area, and we didn't really want to perch beside them. The chicken wings in this place are just unbeatable! I dont think i've ever been here & not ordered them. The staff are friendly, it's a very chill, relaxed atmosphere & the music is quite cool too! Hummus to start is delicious too, amazing flavour accompanied by just the right veg! Have never been here & had dessert because i always fill up on wings first. Only reason this place is not getting 5 stars is that they have quite a poor selection of drinks. Elephant & Castle is located right in the heart of Temple Bar so even if the food wasn't any good, it would still be packed to the rafters every night of the week. As it is, the food there is better than decent so it is inevitably jammers any time you walk by. Last time I went, we had a booking but we still waited a good half an hour for our table. The staff are friendly but clearly stressed because some order from on high dictates that the place be constantly heaving rather than turning away a single punter. The food itself is tasty without being amazing. I can't enter the chicken wing debate based on personal experience but I can attest that my friends looked very happy with their blue cheese dip! The menu is quite meat-heavy but it is extensive (burgers, omelettes, sandwiches, salads, pasta and more) so those of us who are otherwise inclined should find something to chew on! read more

This was our first stop after landing and waiting for our Air BnB to be ready. Let's just say, for my first meal in Ireland I was definitely not disappointed. It was a great start to the trip. We were with a group (6 of us) and were seated at a big booth in the window which was great for looking outside. Instead what we got was akin to any nice brunch spot in the States. Also, their buffalo wings are good. There's something in that sauce and I think it's more than that excellent Irish butter. Streaky bacon, which is American style bacon, and nicely cooked eggs. A briochey not overly sweet French toast. A decent steak and eggs. Coffee I could appreciate. Friendly service. All wonderful things. All magical things. All really American. But it does not pretend to be anything that it is not. And it does the things that it does quite well. I am surprised if I actually haven't written this review before now. I was here in December while going through Ireland to get home and stopped at this place. It was one of the best meals that I had in Dublin. I had the mussels and a cider and they were spectacular. I had to think they might be since every table had someone eating them. I was lucky, there wasn't much of a line and other times I saw a line that I would not have waited in. Even with a line, I would definitely recommend it. I ate here back in 2010 and really enjoyed myself! Enjoyed it so much in fact that I just searched it and suggested it to someone who is taking a trip to Dublin. I remember the potatoes being the best I had ever eaten - pickles were amazing as well!!! I enjoyed the entire meal and atmosphere. I wish I could say more at this time but it was over 10 years ago so I think that holds some award in the fact that I searched for them 10 years later! I came to visit this place yesterday after I read Tim L's review here on Yelp. I followed his step-by-step guide and had an amazing experience. The Chicken Wings with the Sierra Nevada beer was truly great. I also ordered in the hummus and my partner got a burger, both dishes was of great value and his burger was cooked perfectly. My son and I stumbled across this place while we were backtracking my son's steps from his adventures in the Temple Bar area because he lost his cell phone last night. We've been sitting here for close to 90 minutes and all here have been extremely lovely, other patrons included. Had no idea E&C was famous for their wings-which we noticed seemed to be on everyone's table-so we had some-and yes, they are excellent. The bleu cheese dipping sauce is a bit milder than what we are used to in the US, and I found it quite refreshing. In addition, I tipped the waiter what I would normally tip in the States, and he took the tine to explain to me that it wasn't necessary because here they make minimum wage and tips are only given if you want for exceptional service. If I could I would give 3.5... and here's why: the staff was very unfriendly and what I ordered was terrible. I got potato leek soup and you think in Ireland it would be amazing but no... it tasted old or canned even the bread that came with it was terrible. Everything about this place was wonderful! We were in Dublin for 5 days and every night we walked by this place was packed. On our last night we finally tried it. We had tried wings 3 other times during our stay and we got them here as well. They were extremely good (as you can see in the picture) & that's coming from someone picky about wings. My husband got a pan seared chicken dish which had a very good red wine sauce and crispy skin & I got a filet with a very good peppercorn sauce. The filet was cooked perfect and was extremely tender. Service was also wonderful - we were helped quickly, our water was refilled without asking, and were check on regularly -- which was impressive due to how busy it was. Location is convenient on Fleet Street/Temple but we found the food here just ok. They definitely try to mix it up by adding unusual ingredients to a main dish but we found it missed the mark with the dishes we ordered. I don't recommend the crab cakes. Stopped in here for a very late lunch with a friend. We ended up getting the garlic burger and steak sandwich. Both were very tasty, and the service was very friendly and attentive. They have a very nice menu that is decently priced. The only problem my friend had was that the steak sandwich was hard to chew as a sandwich, and the burger was too big for me to eat at a burger, so I had to it eat it with a fork.
