Wasn't impressed! They didn't have enough help. I ordered soup with a pretzel. The bowl of soup was very small and the pretzel was burnt and hard. I couldn't believe they would serve this. Geez I love to be surprised at a restaurant, especially one that has got a rep for burgers - you know, that's what I write about. Like I was supposed to be amazed at Los Angeles' Umami Burger, but wasn't. Across town in West L.A., tho, I was blown away by the burger at Golden State Cafe. Go figure. Elgin Public House Review Bleu Horse Burger I am delighted to say I was surprised at the Elgin Public House, a massive bar in downtown Elgin, IL. They've been open eight years, and have an incredibly deep menu for hand prepped items. They have a big selection of burger choices, including two Wagyu, two veggie options, a turkey, and bison. The beef burgers come in a lot of pre-determined configurations, or you can start from scratch, pick your protein, bun and toppings. All burgers are served with a choice of a side from a very long list of options. Mrs BurgerDogBoy went straight for the "The Bleu Horse," a burger crusted with blue cheese and horseradish, onion straws, and she added pickles and a tomato slice to the brioche bun. She chose Cajun fries as her side. I didn't try one, but she reported they had a little more heat than she expected. I went with something way off the usual path for me, their "Saltimbocca Burger," topped with prosciutto, fresh Mozzarella and bruschetta. It was served on a ciabatta roll slathered with red pepper aioli. I went with their regular fries, which they call "pub fries," and they are somewhere between a shoestring and a steak fry in size and texture. We both ordered our burgers medium rare, and they came......medium rare! The hand-formed patties had a nice little char on them and a smash treatment. Tough to get a smashed burger medium rare, kudos to chef. Anyway, I was blown away by my burger. These elements come together so perfectly I am at a loss to describe it. The mozz and bruschetta were chilled, and the aioli brought it all together. Hot protein, chilled vegetable, great bread durable enough for a heavily topped burger, and a little spice with the aioli. Magnificent. Add over the top service from Molly to the experience. Two burgers, two soft drinks, $24.95. If there's a 'next time,' I'd give the Wagyu with garlic Boursin a shot. I've no doubt it would be superb. read more

We have been trying to find new places to explore over the past few weeks and it turns out that we're surrounded by towns full of restaurants and businesses we have never heard of! Just a few weeks back, we explored Des Plaines and yesterday we took a self-made tour of Elgin! We originally were planning to go bowling in Carpentersville at Liberty Lanes, so we search our trusty Yelp app and found Elgin Public House in downtown Elgin. 100+ reviews and 4 stars...well if you use Yelp at all, you know that 4 stars with that many reviews really says something! So as I was on the phone with my sister yesterday morning and talking about all the pics of the food at this place, I said to her "I'm not sure if you wanna go here for lunch, but this is where we are eating!" We met my sister, brother-in-law and awesome nephew here just a little after 12 noon. Steve and I walked in to find a small dining room with just a few people inside and I thought we might not be in the right place so I got a little nervous but I told the gentleman that greeted us that we were meeting some people and he gestured to another area towards the back of this dining area and sure enough this place just goes on and on...found our party in the back of the restaurant behind the bar area and we joined them. We looked around and observed they even have an upstairs. Not sure what its used for but I can imagine maybe more seating or larger parties? Our adorable server, Jami, greeted us warmly and brought us some drinks. She was a ace from start to finish with only on exception. We had a lot of questions for her, being that we have never been here before, and she graciously answered all questions. She really knew the menu from front to back and made some suggestions and even gave her honest opinion about the things we asked her. We ordered our food and a few of us wanted chili so we opted for the up charge of $2.25 to get the chili as a side in place of fries or onion strings, etc. I selected the pesto chicken sandwich on a pretzel roll. I switched out the Swiss for FRESH MOZZARELLA for a nominal up charge and it was amazing. This sandwich is not something I would normally order but it sounded so good and I'm SO happy that's what I ordered. I also got the chicken chili as my side. It had a bit of a kick and that was very nice. My hubby got the KC burger which had bacon, cheddar and BBQ sauce on it. BIL got a turkey, avocado pita with Cajun fries which I did sample and they were excellent. Nephew got the Hawaiian chicken sandwich which he really liked and my sis went for the meatloaf sandwich. Which is also not something she would order but she seemed quite happy with her meal except that the meatloaf was a lot smaller than the bread it was served on so there was a lot of empty space. Everyone overall enjoyed their food. My one tiny complaint regarding the food was there really wasn't enough cheese on my chili. I should have asked for just a bit more, so my bad. Now, my other issue...as excellent as our server was, she didn't check back on us until two of the five people at our table were completely done eating. We had several empty cups on the table and I found myself rationing my beverage. They offer a Sunday brunch for like $14 pp, which I def wanna come back and try sometime soon! This is absolutely going to become a new stop for us. Sandwiches were all about $10 or less so you won't go broke dining here. The facility itself is quite an old building, so it had character. Located in the heart of downtown with free parking directly across the street, how could you not at least stop by for a bite if you're in the area!? read more

We were so relieved to hear from our server that EPH might be rounding the corner in terms of a full return. We have loved the creative (and absolutely delicious) offerings for years! Burgers are a stand out, and so is the Sloppy Joe, the Mac and Cheese, and my personal favorite, nachos! The house made EPH cheese sauce elevates everything it's poured over. They have a huge beer and drink menu, and everything is always served to order. I also super appreciate how considerate they are for those of us with food allergies! I was assuming it was going to be a small dive in bar, with beer food only. There was different menus for happy hour, specials and then their full dinner entrees. Variety of food for any occasion and beer selections. They have slot machines as well. Booths, family tables and bar seating available. Doesn't feel cramped at all. Awesome service, great place to meet up with family and friends and bring the little ones as well. I loved what I ordered. I've had stuff pork chops but never stuffed with cornbread. I came here with a coworker for lunch on a whim, and the two of us ordered the Burger Saltimbocca, which contains Prosciutto, Fresh Mozzarella, Sage and Bruschetta Mix on Toasted Ciabatta with Red Pepper Aioli. It was like eating a burger-fied bruschetta on ciabatta bread. No one else. Guy at the bar left and it was me and no one else. Kinda creepy. To add to it the music playing was all Stevie Nicks. All the time. Nothing else. Started very badly. EPH Salad was horrible. Wilted lettuce and chicken looked dry and horrible with terrible portions. I then sent it back and got a EPH Wedge instead. Much better, in fact this was a 5 star but the wasted time was a 1 Star, so it evened out. Kids got burgers which looked very good. Server did his best, but manager started off horrible and moody but recovered very well. I got the fried pickles as a app and let me tell you it was mediocre at best. The horseradish it's paired with is the worse I've had. By the time our food came the pickles were inside messing us up. Highly recommend. Menu has a lot of variety, most I've seen in a while. They have everything from sandwiches to burgers to salads to fish. I got the turkey melt with mac n cheese as a side and it was delicious. My mom got the ahi tuna salad and loved it and my fiancé got the Buffalo chicken salad and also enjoyed his meal. They have gluten free options as well which is nice. We didn't get drinks but there are plenty of options to choose from. There is street parking all around so it is easy to get to. We came here last year with our friend group of 8 before the Christmas concert at Hemmens Auditorium and the food was ok but good service and reasonable prices. They have completely disintegrated - really, really poor service and the food was burnt, awful or wrong. We waited for the waitress to come by for our drinks order about 20-25 minutes. We asked that she also take the food order because we were now getting a bit nervous about making it to the concert. The drinks were delivered about 15 min later. Then she never came back..for an hour. I finally walked up to the hostess stand and asked her what was up she said "can't you see all the orders up" and pointed to the kitchen. The restaurant was not even full. I told her we were leaving. As I got back to the table, she brought out two meals. I guess to try to get us to stay. About 10 min later she brought out our appetizers and other meals. My meatloaf was awful and the apparently put it on the griddle to warm up but burnt the one side. One other meal was simply not what the person ordered. So now we had food but not enough silverware for everyone, no napkins, and the ketchup bottles were empty. We asked for the check. Our bill had about five meals on it and a bunch of drinks that were not ours (separate checks for each couple.) So I told the waitress, she came back with a discounted bill but still higher in total than the food we ordered. Finally I walked over to the bar and told the manager that the service was a shit show and told him how we had all been treated. I said we were all going to leave something on the table for what we felt we ate - most of us did not get a chance to eat what was brought because we were now late in leaving for the show. The excuse was that they had some staff that called off - ok if they were that short staffed they never should have sat that many tables and MANAGED the situation or at least came by to apologize for the incredible delay. There are better choices in the area. We won't be back. read more

The waitresses were SO kind right off the bat. The whole place is really cute as it is decorated for Christmas, so it's very pretty inside. Compared to some other places around here, the prices are decent and honestly the quality of the food was AMAZING. We started with the Mezze platter, and it is a must have. It comes with baba ganoush, hummus, and tzatziki, and pita and carrots for dipping. It was sooo good! Then I got the Elgin chopped salad which was absolutely delicious. My family members tried the Elgin burger which they highly recommend. My sister got the turkey sandwich which is also VERY good, with apples, mustard, turkey and brie. Very good. We are so happy that we came here! EPH was recommended by family and friends in the past, but we never made it in until today. We ordered the cheese curds first and they were so crispy! They were honestly the best we've ever had! For our entrees, my husband ordered the 6 oz Steak dinner and he said that it was tender and delicious.
