They where open and clear on rent vs purchase and having pricing on the options, he decided to purchase due to wanting a specific color and wanting to keep his suit for future uses. From there we went on to see exactly what shade with great help from Jim. Every single step was just great and the owner came out to even great us and started giving our 2 kids candy and a toy car to push around the store. We felt so welcome, he also heard me talking about my dress color and suggested a custom tie that would pull in the shade of ivory from me dress and my husband's white dress shirt together. Shortly before leaving, they mentioned they also do alterations on wedding dresses since I had mentioned my dress still needing alterations. Fast forward a week later and I'm getting quoted an amazing quote to have my dress altered, so much stress was relieved! Today I visited Eli Thomas Menswear (again) and just wanted to share a bit of my experience. As I came through the doors I was greeted by the front desk straight away and was welcomed back. Quite possibly the best buying experience I have ever had. I first walked in here recently to find my wedding suit - Jim was the first person to come up to me and led me to this beautiful blue suit. After viewing a few others I knew the first suit he picked was perfect for me. That day I didn't buy that suit because I wanted to see what alternatives were out there. I'm leaving this place an awful review due to the rudeness of the manager. The sole reason I did not buy anything was due to how one of the managers made me feel awful about myself. The salesperson was very helpful but the only tuxedo shirt that I liked was out of my budget and I told him I would just buy my shirt somewhere else. When I told the salesperson that, the manager overheard and scoffed at me and rolled his eyes. He then said whatever shirt I get will be nowhere near the quality of their shirts (which is not true at all). We then went back and forth where he was arguing with me. Which isn't appropriate when you don't know people's situations. What he doesn't know is I was planning on buying the rest of my wedding outfit there besides the shirt, but due to the small mindedness of the manager I left the store because I was so mad at how I was being treated, and obviously bought nothing at all. read more

I went here with my partner to find a nice dinner jacket and the service and selection were both wonderful. My husband was immediately helped in finding something and was given several jackets to try on after he talked about the different occasions he'd need the jacket for. He doesn't like to have too many items and preferred to have something that could be used in both formal and informal occasions and they found him a perfect navy sports jacket. They have a tailor on staff to make sure everything fits perfectly and we were able to have the jacket tailored within the week for our special dinner. But today was different, today I went in to get fitted for my wedding and look at different styles for the best man, grooms men and the fathers. Today I was helped by Jim Thomas and he made the whole experience enjoyable for both my fiancé and I. He was able to answer all of our questions and concerns and guide us in the right direction. In addition Jim made it very fast and easy for us, we were in and out in 30-40 minutes and left very happy knowing we were in great hands. I'll never shop anywhere else for something other than totally casual clothes. The service and selection here is fantastic. I grew up here in San Jose and peripherally I had always known of Eli Thomas, but thought that it was for high school prom tux rentals. Forward a decade and a half and I started a new job. My boss was always impeccably dressed, to the point where he'd come to work in an outfit that seriously made me angry because it was just so dang sharp. I asked him where he shopped and he told me that despite living up in Napa, someone had hooked him up to Eli Thomas and he's been shopping there for over a decade. I gave it a shot and man, I'll never look back. Jim, the current owner and a third(?) generation member of the family to run the establishment, is incredible. The first time I came in, I needed to pick up some pants for work, and to get some alterations done on a couple sport coats. Without me even putting on the coats, he knew my size and what alterations needed to be made. The man is a beast! I recently pick up a couple pairs of pants, shirts, and an Au Noir sport coat. I've got pretty short arms and legs and anytime I buy shirts or pants they need to be altered. One of the greatest things about Eli Thomas... alterations are included in the price of the item, and they generally have some fantastic sales nonetheless. My Au Noir jacket had some distinctive stitching along the cuff, so to preserve that, they deconstructed the jacket and took it in at the shoulder. That's a serious alteration yet it was free! I wear that jacket to work once or twice a week and wish I could do so more often; every night I wear it I get at least 3 people complimenting it. Seriously, go shop here. They have everything, from Italian Enzo shirts, to Agave jeans often on sale, to B-A cufflinks at less than what you would pay for at Nordstrom. This place has it all, and like I said before, I'm never shopping elsewhere. read more

We had a mediocre experience with Eli Thomas about 6 months prior to our own wedding (for another friend's wedding), but decided to give them one more shot. And maybe partly out of laziness, since Eli Thomas already had all the groomsmen's measurements on file. Their customer service at Eli Thomas was pretty good, the salesman who helped us showed us different options for tuxedo jackets and pants. When I had trouble picking tie and vest colors from a catalog to match the bridesmaids dresses, he offered to pull some fabric swatches so that I could look at them. These are the problems that we encountered with the rentals: - When the groom picked up his tie and vest, I noticed that the vest had some weird scratches and snags. They quickly replaced the vest with a newer looking one. - We requested flat front pants, and they gave us pleated pants. - One of the groomsmen was given pants that were 2 sizes too small. - Another one of the groomsmen was given a jacket with 3 buttons instead of 2. He went back to exchange his jacket, and the replacement jacket had a button that was only hanging on by a thread. For the friend's wedding 6 months ago, we had an even longer list of issues. With all the things that you have to worry about during your own wedding, you would think that the groomsmen's tuxes wouldn't be such an issue. Variety doesn't seem to be their strong point, but they're really good at one thing: FIT. Let one of the used caresalesman-like staff creep you out a bit, it's ok. Because he's going to make sure whatever you buy fits absolutely perfectly, no matter how oddly shaped you are or how ridiculous your request. Just be wary of their suggestions, lest you want to walk out of the place looking like a Powerball winner from Jersey. Have been here for 9 seasons to rent a tux for Christmas party. Never been more impressed than this time. Faisal was the reason for the prompted Yelp review! He was so thorough, so professional, so spot on in his calculations as well as measurements! I don't know how long that it has been since I wore/rented a slim anything!! Faisal confidentially encouraged me to order slim this time and the compliments couldn't stop heading my way this time for the same exact event with the majority of the same people for the past 9 seasons. He even remeasured both my jacket arm sleeves as well as my pants length as opposed to simply taking the easy way out of using whatever was in the file from last year! Another 1st for me here was that Faisal took me to the room where the accessories are kept. For the 1st time in 9 seasons I was able to select my own tie and vest for night one and bow tie and coordinating vest for the second night! I can say that this place was okay before but is outstanding now thanks to Faisal! Kudos also to the receptionist who when I called to say there was no way for me to enter their parking lot due to thee red cones said "just run over the cones because they don't belong their". Apparently a delivery driver for a Santana Row store took the liberty to block the entrance to the Eli Thomas parking lot instead of thing through to move up the cones 20 feet or so to only block cars from entering the one store area that he was catering to! read more

This review is for Tuxedo Rentals... My husband and a couple of his friends rented groomsmen tuxes from ET for another mutual friend's wedding. Customer service review: I went with my husband for his fitting and the service was great. The young man that helped us out and measured him was very professional and kind, as were the other staff members that we interacted with. The product itself was sooooooo disappointing. My husband has rented plenty of tuxes from Men's Warehouse and in the future I hope that he never has to rent from ET again. 1. Buttons popped off of the suit jackets -- BEFORE the wedding ceremony. This happened to two guys in the wedding party and both are trim/fit men... it's not like their gut popped it off, the buttons were just POORLY sewed on. They ended up having to safety pin their coats for pictures. Really inconvenient and disappointing. 2. One sleeve of my husband's suit jacket came unsewed at the beginning of the reception (or that's when we noticed it). Luckily all the formal wedding pictures that the groomsmen were involved in were done by then... but so was any chance of my husband putting on that jacket again. 3. The tuxedos do not come in a black garment bag like the Men's Warehouse ones do, they came covered in a TRASH bag hanging on dry cleaners hangers... what the hell??? The last time I packed clothing in a trash bag was when I was moving out of my dorm room in college and couldn't afford any better! It's not like they charge any less than Men's Warehouse, so from a financial perspective it was very disappointing to pick up a tux in a trash bag. I know this might be a minor detail to some, but besides making their business look super cheap and unclassy, it was disappointing to think that my husband was wearing a tux that had been stored in a trash bag to his childhood best friend's wedding. Seriously? Seriously. Definitely not as organized or up to par as I would've liked it, but ET left us no choice. So from a product quality and an experience perspective, I would NOT recommend Eli Thomas to any engaged couples looking to rent. The only reason I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1 star is because of the few kind employees that helped us out at the fitting. read more

One of the car-sales-men dudes actually helped us pick out a vest for my fiance's tuxedo tonight. He was really helpful although a bit on the sales-y cheesy side. I think the store is nice, well lit, and they carry a wide selection of stuff. We didn't order a tux from this store so I can't comment on that particular service. Eli Thomas was a supporter of one of the fashion shows my college VSA club put on. My experience with them has been fine so far and I haven't had any problems with them. I was in dire need of a tux and knew I didn't want to rent one. I pulled into the Eli Thomas parking lot on Winchester and the rest is history. The third generation clothier, Jim Thomas, greeted me and proceeded to fit me with an incredibly beautiful tuxedo. He took his time making suggestions and answering questions and then brought out Albert, Eli Thomas' tailor. In about two minutes, Albert had everything marked and pinned including the pleated shirt. One week later, I stopped in and picked up my tux. Eli Thomas is not cheap, but then who wants to wear cheap clothes except teenagers? Both the clothing and the service is top notch. I've worn my tux on three occasions now and have received multiple compliments on the drape of the fabric and how well it looks (and I'm a big guy). If you 're in the market for a MAN'S tuxedo--something long lasting, well made, and stylish--I'd urge you to stay away from the retail chains and invest in a tuxedo (or a suit) that is made to look good for many years.
