The restaurant was a really cute date night spot for my wife and me. We did go for a birthday celebration and it was written in the online reservation, but we were a little disappointed that it wasn't communicated with the server or acknowledged at any point during the night. The staff were very friendly. Our favorite was the 8 yakitori skewer set. We got to pick the skewers and enjoyed all 8 choices. The flavor was really good. The meat and seafood were tender. The sushi, sushi rolls and sashimi tasted fresh. The crispy rice was okay. It was missing a some flavor and was a little bland. The scallop bisque was nice to enjoy for that rainy night. We would come back to try the sashimi omakase and to try the lunch here. read more

Try delete five with my wife. The food was flavorful. The restaurant is BYOB. We had the duck skewers and the lobster tempura sushi as an appetizer. Although the duck was tasty, it came out look warm. I had the snow queen for my entrée which was halibut over rice peel off with a coconut carrot cream sauce. I loved it. My wife had the ribeye steak, which again was very flavorful, but came out lukewarm. We had to send it back and ask them to warm it up. The prices are as what you would expect from a restaurant in Princeton. Service was slow, but we weren't in a rush. All in all we had a nice time and I could see us going back again. read more

What an INCREDIBLE dinner experience! Came here for my hubby's bday and it didn't disappoint. We had our first omakase meal here and just loved every dish we received. Server was friendly and even met the sushi chef, a friendly Indonesian lady. This wasn't even the official omakase as it was the 7-roll version that was highlighted on their menu. Almost like a sampler to the real experience. They also do an official omakase with at least a week's notice, where they personalize the rolls based on your preferences. Ordered takeout which went smoothly and they had the order waiting for us when we walked in. The sushi here is just okay. In my opinion it's on par with some AYCE places. I had higher expectations for the price point. The rice in the two rolls I got was dry and overall did not enjoy the texture of those. The pieces of sushi were decent but nothing special. Japanese dining tends to taste like the owners all bought the same Sushi Restaurant kit. That is not this place. This is on another level of taste and creativity. Service, atmosphere, and menu variety are excellent. At first I hesitated ordering the 7 piece Omekase wondering if was worth it, and chose the chicken teriyaki anticipating I would still be hungry. The octopus was cooked rare, avoiding the sin of octopus shaped rubber, and had a very well balanced marinade. The broccoli was the star of the show in the teriyaki; crunchy with fresh garlic flavor. The chicken was fried and in a thicker sauce that was interesting but became a bit bogged down. I have to tell you I had tears in my eyes when I ate the Omakase it was so fantastic. There were at least 5 different flavors to each nigiri and finding them was a surprise and delight. I couldn't believe it was so good. I gushed to Cindy, the chef, who is humble and kind, discussing the individualized Omakase experience, the crunchy broccoli, and the complexity of the nigiri. The winter break at PU offers an opportunity to try new places without the crush of humanity... or so I thought. Elite Five Sushi is always bustling. In a town where sushi (plastic and otherwise) is on the menu at every pizza joint and pub, it's nice to see true artisans at work. Not super impressed. The appetizers were a little disappointing, definitely wouldn't get the ceviche again(super small portion and more of a tartare than ceviche but what do I know). Edamame was ok but salted unevenly. The sushi was pretty tasty but not life changing. The lucky o five and eel rolls were good but the soft shell crab one was a little watery. The desserts however were SO good. Highly recommend. Our server was a kind of cold but the service was super quick. The restaurant itself is nice. Love sushi? Same. I've enjoyed the crème de la crème in Kyoto and Tokyo, where the fish practically introduced itself before leaping onto my plate. So imagine my horror at paying $55 for the so-called "Elite Omakase" here in the States. This is what I got for my hard-earned cash: 5 pieces of sashimi (toro, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and white tuna) tasting like they were caught in a pond of sadness. Plus, a "special" roll so bland it could've been named "The House Salad of Sushi." Tuna, salmon, avocado, and red tobiko all drizzled in a "special" house sauce so dull, it served no purpose except in its possible attempt to add color to the boring fish. And the condiments? Oh, they were the supporting cast of disappointment. Pre-packaged soy sauce that tasted like salt tears, wasabi that had no bite to it, and ginger so lifeless it did nothing. Even its color looked worn out. Here's the kicker: this dish changes price depending on the website--$50, $55, $65. Honestly, it felt more like a bidding war for mediocrity. This meal put me to sleep. As I was snoring, a neighboring diner robbed me of $55. Consider my omakase dreams officially crushed. This photo makes the Elite Omakase dish look colorful, full of vibrant tastes but alas, it's a dish of mushy fish with no distinct flavor with an unreasonable price tag. read more

Another in a long list of Princeton restaurants which I'm guessing will be gone within a three years...and deservedly so. My date and I went at 6PM on a Saturday evening in July and the place was about one-quarter full, not a good sign right off the bat. We had the Cold Scallops starter, which should have been called "Weird Temperature Scallop", because it was a single large scallop, mandolined and served on a 14" plate with a lukewarm sauce that just seemed OFF -- was this a cold dish or a hot dish that had been left out too long? Unclear, but pre-tax / tip, i was already out $16. Yikes! Next up, the "Ice & Fire" Signature Maki. For $18 (pre-tax / tip), you get five of the mealiest, blandest avocado / tuna rolls you'll ever experience, garnished with about five caviar eggs (doled out with tweezers, I'm imagining) and a red fish that apparently was tuna based on what the menu said. There was a single slice of jalapeño you could eat if you needed to make sure your taste buds were still working, but otherwise pure "Blandville". Admittedly the Sashimi Premium, 18 pieces for $33 list, was *okay*, though at that point in the meal our expectations were so low that anything above ShopRite Manager's Special quality (with all due respect) would have cleared the bar. But certainly nothing special. Restaurant Depot ginger, soy sauce and fake wasabi, I'm guessing. The ambience was nice, though the bathrooms, shared with other establishments in the same strip mall, were not what you would expect from a date-night establishment. And the wait staff was just okay, though I did need to raise my hand several times to get their attention ("Water refill, please"). But I walked out $90 poorer (there was a $4 jasmine green tea in there, full disclosure) and still a bit hungry. I certainly won't be going back, though as I said at the top, there probably won't be an Elite 5 to go back to in a year or so if they don't either up their game or lower their prices significantly. read more

None of the sushi tasted particularly fresh and we ordered and appetizer that calls itself "smoked yellowtail with white sturgeon caviar". What they served is not white sturgeon caviar. I told the server but I don't think they care. The Yakitori we were served came out almost immediately and was clearly just precooked and briefly warmed up skewered. What a sweet gem in the Princeton area! Love the affordable sashimi options they have and will certainly be returning after a wonderful anniversary experience. After we sat we order drinks then an appetizer an we first had to wait 10 minutes and then after are waitor told us 10 more minutes it then took longer. Been here twice in the last couple of months and have had their sashimi premium, "Fantastic Tuna" roll, scallop bisque, and miso soup. The sashimi premium came with 18 pieces of sashimi from six different types of fish (3 pieces each). There was good variety and the fish was very fresh. The "Fantastic Tuna" roll had tuna, avocado, and spicy tuna on top. The roll did not taste as fresh as the sashimi and was just okay. The scallop bisque was creamy, flavorful, and great on a cold day. We did street parking when we went and were easily able to find a spot near the restaurant. They are BYOB. read more

For Japanese food, we ordered miso soup (good), edamame (ok), sashimi premium (good), and sunset maki (good). In general, all the fish were fresh. Giving this a soft 4 stars. I've came here twice now (both for lunch) and finally had time to write my reviews. This new resto is a bit hidden on the other end of the defunct Two Sevens (now the Meeting Room) on Witherspoon Street. While street parking are limited they offer complimentary 2hr parking in the lot across the street. Decor is simple yet modern and date night ambiance approved. For lunch I ordered the charashi bowl w/rice ($18) which came with an assortment of fresh chef's choice of sashimi. I really enjoyed it but find that the sashimi pieces could have been a bit larger. The sushi rice was actually made the right way (with sushi vinegar) which many places does not use. My other guests had the Yakitori 5 skewer set ($15). You get a choice of 3 meats (about 2 pieces each) and 2 vegetable options. My guest said the meat was cooked perfectly and was tasty but it wasn't filling for him (he's 5'8"/180lbs). The waitress should have mentioned for him to order more. For dessert my guest had the homemade mango sorbet plate. It was very good and plated like a work of art. Second time for lunch, I opted for the Pork belly ramen ($17) based on the great reviews but I I had the opposite experience. The broth lacked the richness and creaminess that I am accustomed to. The ramen was a bit overcooked (not al dente). The egg was poached and not soft boiled. The pork belly was grilled and not braised. It was rather tough and chewy and not like the melt in your mouth pork belly. It could have been an off day and they didn't have time to get the pork belly tenderized. My guest had the charishi ($18) don and was satisfied but like me thought the pieces could have been a tad bigger. Service was prompt and Chef Tony (owner) walks around to check and greet patrons which I think is good for a new resto. He probably has a photographic memory too because he remembered me by name. As a new restaurant I know that there's going to be changes to be made. I love to support my local business and will come back to try some other dishes. I forgot to mention that it's byob. The closest liquor store around is McCaffery's or Public Wine/Beer. read more

First time coming here. Had high hopes after reading all the great reviews. The restaurant is located in an obscure area, surrounded by office buildings. Had to pay to park in the lot across the street. Entered the dimly lit but modern flair decor restaurant (personally don't care for dim lighting in restaurants as I can't really appreciate the appearance of the dishes & cleanliness of the restaurant) We ordered the calamari salad, assorted Sushi Plate along with Salmon salad. Both of the salads were fine, Sushi however was sub par. In my honest opinion, I thought the quality of the sushi was no better than an all you can eat place.....disappointing. Great food! I almost didn't eat here because of the 1 star reviews but I'm SO glad I didn't let that deter me. I listened to my friend who has dined here many times. Yes we didn't have the most speedy dining experience but who cares? We enjoyed our evening and had a large order. The pan fried dumplings are incredible. Probably some of my favorite I've ever had. All of the rolls were excellent and I especially loved my Omakase order. Can't beat the BYOB perk as well. read more

Elite Five Sushi and Grill was a great way to start my birthday week! It's difficult to find comfortable dining places during the pandemic, but they took the proper precautions. The staff were all wearing masks and the tables were spaced far apart. Not sure if this is related to COVID, but there were screens between tables that matched the aesthetic of the rest of the restaurant. I highly recommend making a reservation by calling, especially on the weekend! We called yesterday and only lunch on Saturday was available. I enjoyed the presentation of every aspect of this meal. For example, the bag that the green tea was in was shaped in a pyramid and the miso soup bowl had a distinct shape. All the sushi were on flat rectangular plates, which conveyed classy vibes. I wish the tea wasn't extra, but it was a perfect compliment to the meal. The miso soup was flavorful and so needed during this frigid winter. I've never had anything like the jalapeño poppers, which are cut jalapeños with cheese inside and then a fried outside along with spicy Mayo and your choice of tuna or salmon on top. The fish from the sushi set was fresh and the dish was a good portion size for lunch. The sweet heart roll was so cute and tasty. I would love to come back and try more of their numerous offerings! Overall, Elite Five Sushi and Grill has a classy ambiance that would serve as a nice place for a date, a celebration, or if you're feeling a little fancy. How have we missed this place??? Came here today for an impromptu lunch date and was totally blown away. West coast transplant with high sushi standards in dire need of a good fix and this place DELIVERED. Hands down, in my view, the best sushi place in Princeton no competition. We had several of the standard rolls, and a special roll (dynamite) and the hamachi melted in my mouth. The uni sushi was heavenly. Continuing on our mission to check out all the sushi spots around Princeton. Reviewed the menu and pics on Yelp and saw that it was $$$ and a bit more fancy then the others which normally are AYCE. BYOB here as well as it seems to be common with the high beer/wine license for a restaurant? Housemade Ankimo was impressive where usually it is premade versions since I know being in the business but nothing wrong with that either. Other highlights include good Shari, salmon, tamagoyaki (housemade?, but a bit thin), unagi. Only one piece of uni left, that is funny never heard of that in a sushi place, it's either sold out or not, it was good. No more bluefin, that was a let down. Notice the yellowfin tuna saku, not my favorite as I am quite an expert in those core frozen sushi fish and plenty at home. Yakitori set was below average, pretty much shouldn't have it on the menu. I know it's not a yakitori place, but it absolutely did not have any bin cho tan/charcoal flavors which only if that was used, so that's ok using fire/grill but it was Luke warm, all of them. No char either. Duck and beef/steak wasn't tender, shrimp was way overcooked, most were pretty sad. Elite roll had tempura lobster, it was very refreshing, the shari (sushi rice) again was seasoned well and quality noticed. Chicken karaage is white meat, housemade looks like but no kewpie/togarashi? That would of helped the dryness. Hiro in Plainsboro is AYCE maybe they are friends, cuz they both had chicken nuggets on the menu. But Hiro only uses bluefin and high end bakkafrost salmon, that has been the most impressive and its $33 person. We spent double the amount tonight, ankimo was special and one piece of uni as well. Other than that, AYCE at Hiro would have satisfied us a bit more on value and assortment. Their Shari isn't as good as Elite but at half the price with bluefin and bakkafrost, it's the better deal. Come to Elite Sushi for the sushi rolls, we ordered only one and a few pieces of sushi, so we can tell they are most skilled in that category. read more
