Who would have thought such wonderful sushi would exist way out in suburban Jersey, but it does and it's delish! After having just a bit of trouble finding the front door, we must have parked in the wrong area, we were greeted and seated very quickly. It certainly helped that it was a weeknight and the place was empty. However, from then on, the service left a bit to be desired. After ordering, it seemed to take an inordinately long time for our food to arrive. Now, it is sushi, but like I said we were the only people in the restaurant. Nonetheless, once our food was served we were content - it's not like it was sitting out getting cold haha. There was one small snafu with my order though. I partially blame myself for assumedly causing confusion when ordering: I ordered a Rainbow Roll and then changed my mind and said "I'll have the Dragon Roll instead." Well, the "instead" wasn't heard or understood because I received both. I was not upset as there is no such thing as "too much sushi", but at the same time I was trying to maintain a corporate meal cap. Again, I take partial blame but I also wish the waitress had read our order back to us. Lessons learned. The sushi itself was well made and tasted fresh. The wasabi was nasal-clearingly on point and the Miso Soup was served piping hot. What more could you want?! Oh, prices: you know, it's sushi! Being way out in New Jersey doesn't (really) reduce the premium this cuisine commands. Sumo Sushi is the spot to have a sushi meal if you are in the area. Heed my small warnings and enjoy! Absolutely delicious lunch today.... can't stop thinking about how good this was. Steak and broccoli bento box with salad and California roll. Ginger ale for drink. Everything was so perfectly tasty. The dressing on the salad was to die for. I wanted to lick the bento box. The steak(beef) and broccoli is one my boyfriend had a little while back that was delicious then. The seasoning was amazing. I've been here many a times in the past, however this visit was after a long gap for a quick lunch and was hoping to have a good meal just like earlier times. Well the meal itself was pretty meh, and even worse was the service. The waiter who took our order was very rude and uninterested. We asked him for tom-yum soup, and he said they do not have it. We then showed it on the menu, and he goes like if its on the menu then we should have it. Really? He had similar responses to a few other questions. I pretty much never write reviews, but people should know how great this restaurant is. I've been coming here for literally over a decade. Even though i live out of state i still make it a point to come here at least once. Their sashimi is cut thick and melts in your mouth. The Ika fried (squid) is fantastic - crunchy and drizzled with the perfect amount of teriyaki and wasabi kabayaki sauce, while the squid is soft and chewy. This review is for the Teppanyaki only. I had high expectations as I love Hibachi. Teppanyaki is different. Yes, your food is cooked on a steel grill in front of you but there's no spinning of eggs on spatulas, no flaming onion volcanoes that are extinguished by the Wee Wee toy, and no zucchini tossed in your mouth. You get fried rice and noodles but no shrimp and no vegetables. The noodles here tasted... different. I personally didn't care for them. It was basically Angel Hair doused with Soy Sauce. I did try a sushi roll as an appetizer. I had the Sumo Maru - it was Spicy Tuna with crunchy and Avocado wrapped in soy paper. Fresh Tuna and ripe Avocado are always a winner. At the end, they popped popcorn kernels and melted sugar to make caramel popcorn. I thought that was entertaining. But overall, not impressed. I do plan on coming back for the sushi only. read more

Teppanyaki is such a great addition to Sumo in Pennington! There are 4 half moon shaped tables available, each seating about 10. One side is a booth which is a little tricky when the people in the middle need to get out. The kids loved how the tables were illuminated! Overall the food was delicious-- we tried chicken, duck, and shrimp. The meal came with both rice and noodles (a bit of a carb overload), and kinda sparse on the veggies...basically just those mixed in with the rice. Also, I have to mention one oddity that could be a drawback or a benefit depending on your crew-- there is NO entertainment by the chef. Not. A. Word. Our kids expected a fun experience and finally asked the chef if he would "make a volcano or throw food in their mouth" and he simply said no. There are no vent hoods (just down draft vents) so this likely limits their ability to perform some of the traditional hibachi tricks. Consider yourself informed :) read more

I've been to Sumo Sushi a handful of times over the past couple of years. Sad to say, but I feel the quality of the restaurant has really deteriorated over the years. For appetizers, we ordered the Malaysian style roti canai and sumo sampler. I was really underwhelmed by the roti canai. The roti was super greasy which immediately turned me off. The taste of the Thai curry dipping sauce was alright.... although, I've definitely had better. The sampler was ok but nothing special. For dinner, I ordered the kung pao chicken with a side of brown rice. Again, it was good but not great. The portion size was pretty big though. I had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Unfortunately, the service wasn't that great either. The waiter forgot to bring a soup that we ordered. Luckily, he didn't end up charging us for it either. We also weren't given any silverware. I had to ask for it, and even after I did we weren't given any knives. Toward the end of our meal, we felt rushed by the waitress who kept coming over and asking if we wanted to go boxes while we were clearly still eating. We've been to Singapore in Mount Laurel and had that fantastic lemongrass shrimp soup. Last weekend, before we went to see Lion, we had sushi at Sumo in Pennington. Delicious. A little fancy. An extensive menu. Great attention to detail. But so, so good. I had the seaweed salad and three rolls. All worth writing home about. Skillful, but not pretentious is a tricky balance for a sushi chef and Charlie Yeh does it as well as anyone. He's opening another spot in Trenton soon, a partnership with TC Nelson, the owner of Trenton Social. I look forward to that. read more

As a kid, I always thought that by now, I'd be an astronaut exploring our solar system and possibly beyond, stretching the limits of human exploration in search of answers to the deepest and most fundamental questions in the universe. Instead, I somehow ended up sitting at a BYOB restaurant in Central Jersey that's reminiscent of a Japanese bath house. Not that I'm an expert on Japanese bath houses but I imagine that it's something like this. And for Central Jersey, it would be a really nice bath house. If there's a lesson in all this, say no to drugs and stay in school kids. Although it's a Japanese restaurant the portions are decidedly American. I consider myself a pretty good eater and I still couldn't finish my lunch special. The biggest disappointment is that it's BYOB yet there isn't a liquor store near by to buy that B. So if coming here for the BYOB make sure to plan ahead and get the the B before heading here. Cuz if you don't you'll just end up with a big W and what fun is that? My friend brought me to this place, since he comes here for lunch. We decided to go all out and get their sushi specials which included umi or sea urchin. That stuff is wack! It looks and smells like brain goop and the taste a'int much better. Some people say it's an acquired taste, but you gotta draw the line somewhere. We usually order the sushi sashimi for two or we let the chef decide what to make us- A few times I have ordered off of the cooked food menu and the portions were huge and very tasty. From the moment we sat down, the servers glared at us as they waited for us to make our order. We were taking a while to decide, and we overheard them talking in Chinese about how long it took for us to make our order! This is not how you run a respectable restaurant. When the food finally came, the quality was mediocre at best. The sushi was room temperature, hinting that it was prepared before we got there and left outside. The non-sushi plates were even worse. The meat was dry and tough to chew. Either they cannot cook or they have simply given up. If you're looking for good Asian cuisine, try Masa 8. Stopped here for lunch with a friend I hadn't seen for ~15 years. Apparently this really IS supposed to be a Sushi / Japanese restaurant. I had gotten the impression that it was more of a Chinese pan-Asian place, kind of a cover all bases for maximum profit sort of thing. Anyhow, I was advised that the sushi was okay, so little Ms. Fussy Pants went ahead and ordered a sushi /sashimi lunch, all expectations on the side. I can overlook the fish being ice cold. I can also overlook the fact that it was almost all sake and maguro. I REALLY liked the use of thinly sliced asian pear in lieu of the usual green plastic leaf as a separator. However, I can't overlook the rice being under-seasoned and falling apart, nor the fish not being fully sliced and still attached, Siamese twin-like to its brother, and least of all the first piece of tuna that tasted like the supermarket fish counter smells. Ah well, at least I didn't come to the table with any expectations. This is the first time I've ever experienced an Asian restaurant serving hot water and a (green) tea bag in response to a request for o-cha. And I thought I was becoming jaded. Misoshiru was pretty damn good, and undecidedly UN-Japanese in it's abundance of tofu and nori. Balance be damned! Sumo aside, lunch was great. I REALLY enjoyed seeing my friend and should probably make a point of doing such things much more often. read more

I really like the sushi. But when you have Sushi in your name you should have the best in the world. I would say it is 3 our of 5 stars. Spicy tuna should be spicy. When you eat there the furniture is very uncomfortable. Not really built for children at all. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here-- and you should too! The dining room fit our 34-person wedding party and they're open until 10 PM on Fridays. More importantly, the food was very good and very nicely presented. Charlie, the owner, was an absolute joy to work with; incredibly accommodating and responsive by phone and email. The staff packed little to go containers and sent them home with our guests, which was a huge hit. And everyone left stuffed. p.s. you HAVE to try the gelato! read more
