Nice place but the food mostly disappointed:( Our family of 6 stopped by Elk & Hound for dinner on July 1, 2022. The visit started great, we liked the place and the decor and the view. Our waitress was very friendly and recommended entrees from their Fri Fish Fry night menu. Appetizers were great and delicious and set high expectations for the entrees. However, the recommended entrees were mostly disappointing :( The only good one was Crab Topped Haddock. Poor Man's Lobster (backed haddock) had some specific not too good taste. And it was specifically recommended to us as "no fishy taste". Unfortunately, we ordered two of these. Grilled Whitefish would be good if not over salted and hence having its taste dulled. Hungarian mushroom soup was pretty tasteless and felt like from a can rather than fresh mushroom soup. Perhaps we would be better off ordering some pizza or steak but we got from Fri Fish Fry menu wasn't good except Crab Topped Haddock. Appetizers: Elk & Hound Combo - excellent Hungarian mushroom soup - skip Mains: Crab Topped Haddock - great Poor Man's Lobster - avoid Grilled whitefish - would be very good if not ruined by too much salt. Drinks: Bloody Mary - great And at the end we find a drink that we never ordered on our check. It was a few $ and I just paid it so not wait for new check as we were all tired by that time. But it left unpleasant feeling. So, we have a quite mixed feeling about this restaurant. If I were in the area I would give it another try ordering different dishes but can't really recommend it. read more

It starts Good god! I don't even know where to start so I'll just go into it! We got sat got our drinks and was shown the ramshackle salad bar! Soup was gone and we all thought was mislabeled.. ‍ now we are 45 min into this and just now we were asked what we'd like to drink... another 15-20 min goes by and out drinks show up along with the news of "we aren't taking anymore orders for another 45 min". But we where told we can have more salad bar that's been picked over already. The meltdown At this point it's already getting late and we are in this to win this right!!! Another 30-35 min goes by our oder is taken and the waiting game starts! At this point one of the waitress has a complete melt down screaming at the cooks tells them to F-bomb off and some other stuff... mind you this is a "family place" right... right..... I start asking other tables how long they've been waiting and it's longer then we have... I noticed at this point the bartender was shoveling drinks down peoples throats to make things right. The mutiny At this point Another table that's came in after us is 7-8 old fashioned deep said screw this we out! As the one lady try's to get the last of the old fashioned down her husband raged with hunger said no let's go! I asked how much longer because at this point I've lost track of time and think it's close to 2.5 hours we've been waiting. And have yet to see any food come out of the "kitchen"! We finally get our food and the person that dropped it off might as well thrown it from a moving truck because he could not get away from us fast enough! Soon I will see why!!! We chose Elk & Hound off of yelp because of old menu photos. The other place we wanted to eat was at capacity until close & they said they were very busy but could accommodate us. It is an old house looking building (cool to me) on a golf course. There were a handful of people eating and plenty of open tables but they were short staffed. The menu was not really family friendly. They don't have much for a kids menu, although my kid loved their maple aioli with her chicken strips. I got the burger and was very underwhelmed. The fries were seasoned and pretty good. The things that stuck out to us the most were that our sodas came after our appetizer and that many of the staff literally ran to get where they were going. It was alarming but seemed normal to others. It was decorated for the Fourth of July with kitschy decor but the building itself has really interesting features. read more

Spare yourself the agony of going to this place. We went on a Friday night. Repeat, Friday night! They claimed to be understaffed, but that was clearly just an excuse. Waited 50 minutes for a table when 60% were open. In that 50 minutes we were served ONE drink at the bar. Finally got seated and put in our order, three dinners that included salad bar. Unfortunately, the salad bar had dressing and lettuce....that was it. 5-7 empty bowls where the cheese, meats, cottage cheese, etc...was supposed to be. Asked if they could replenish....NOPE! When my wife ordered, they asked for a side choice and she selected mashed potatoes...they asked "would you like gravy". She said yes. 5 minutes later the "chef" yelled from the kitchen for the whole place to hear "I'm not doing any friggen gravy tonight!!!l. Unbelievably impolite! Zero accommodations for paying for a meal and not getting half of what you paid for. Just don't go!!! read more

As soon as we sat down, we were told that they were out of several menu items (on an already small menu). Our server forgot to bring our drink orders multiple times, one of which never came. Food was delivered, and when asked if we needed anything else, we had to remind her that there were two additional food items we were waiting on. An old fashioned was made with muddled sugar from a paper packet. All around, a very disappointing experience from out of town visitors. read more

The food is fantastic! Our party had a slight wait at the door for a table to open up but we didn't mind at all. We come here often and have never had a complaint. The service is friendly and they are always willing to accommodate us. We love the soup and salad bar, it's always fresh and we find new and different items each time we have it. Great place to eat and have a stop to drink. Beautiful views and a friendly staff. They had an excellent kids menu and I had the Buffalo Chicken Salad. Because I just accepted a work assignment that will bring me to Ironwood once or twice a week for the next half year or so -- I expect to dine out at a number of local establishments on a regular basis. Today I joined with my colleagues in lunching at the Elk & Hound. The Elk and Hound provided exactly what our small group required for a noontime continuation of our meeting over lunch -- a table for five or six, fast, friendly service, and reasonably priced food that tastes good. I ordered their "Black and Blue Burger." The meat was properly grilled, topped with melted blue cheese, and garnished with tomato and lettuce on a toasted bun. Between the creamy cheese and the juiciness of the burger and tomato I wasn't even tempted to add additional condiments. A generous side of fries (previously frozen) and a slice of pickle completed the plate. I don't expect to find "haute cuisine" in Ironwood (maybe I'll be surprised someday), but for now I know where to find a decent lunch at a sit-down, full service restaurant -- the Elk & Hound. read more

Stayed a night in Ironwood and found this gem. Fantastic service (thanks Jay!) And we enjoyed our meal. Salad bar had a nice selection and the beef soup so good! I had the maple Sriracha shrimp and my husband had the crab covered whitefish. Both were delicious! read more

Went for dinner on 5/28. There were 4 of us. I ordered the "lake perch" special. It was undercooked, watery and perhaps the blandest thing I ever tasted. It was obviously frozen and had not been thawed properly. It was breaded and most of the breading had fallen off. It did not taste like any perch I have had before. When I complained, the manager was "gracious" enough to take 50% off my meal since I had eaten a few bites. It was a bad experience all around.. Will definitely not be going back. read more

I've been here many times before, but now it's under new management, so I had to check it out. This has always been one of the most beautiful buildings in our area. It still is, but dining here was nothing short of a "shit show". Four of us went here for a fish fry and it was not busy at all. But watching the staff was a painful experience. They were literally running around like there was an emergency. We were at a table near the kitchen, and each time a server entered or exited the kitchen, they yelled loudly, "coming in"! or, "coming out"! It was beyond annoying, especially when there is no door on the kitchen. So, it ended up taking 50 minutes to get four fish fries on a rather slow night. The food was average at best. The salad bar was wiped out and the soups were cold and almost empty. The bar seemed under control, but the dining was chaos. My advice is to sit in the bar area and be prepared to wait. I can't imagine this place being able to handle a busy shift, so I hope the management sees this and makes some changes. read more

Its a very modern place inside I like how nice it looks. The girls said their food was decent but I ordered a basket of chicken fingers and was not very impressed. I know that chicken fingers aren't sosposed to be all top notch but I've had a lot of chicken fingers at different resturaunts but compared to this I was pretty grossed out. read more

Good Food & Great Service - Large Group I travel to Ironwood, MI every year in February (past 13 years) for a week of Winter Sports and have dined at Elk and Hound many times. Some years, the service has been so-so, but on February 5, 2015, the service was excellent and the food was very good. I dined here with 17 friends. I ordered the 8oz Filet Mignon with a baked potato and side salad. All the food was very good and my steak was very tender and cooked MW as I had asked. Others at my table ordered entrée salads, sandwiches, steaks, fish and ribs. Everyone said their dinner was excellent/very good. This restaurant has some interesting architecture and for some reason it was not built with enough insulation for the UP Winters. In 2015, Elk & Hound has put up lots of tall space heaters so the draft issue is not a problem. The menu leans towards meat entrees and that should be obvious from the name of the restaurant. Come here for a good red meat dinner! read more

The restaurant has a semi-scenic location right on a golf course just a few minutes outside of Hurley/Ironwood. It's classified as a pizza restaurant but, from the looks of the menu, they are more focused on steaks and ribs. My husband and mother in law both had ribs and said they were decent. The salad bar that came with the meal, however, was pretty disappointing (not fresh and very picked over by 6:30pm). The larger, meal-sized salads were okay, and my father in law enjoyed his steak salad quite a bit - "pretty darn good". I, however, had to pick the 'grilled' chicken off of my dish because it was so incredibly dry. Granted, there aren't a lot of great food options in Hurley. But I'd recommend the Bell Chalet over Elk & Hound any day. We won't be coming back. read more

The pizza is amazing! I ordered the meat lovers pizza and it was the best that I have ever had in my life. The toppings are real meats. They had strips of real bacon that was cooked on the pizza. I arrived when they first opened so they had to warm up the pizza oven so the owner let me have the salad bar for free. So I got cottage cheese and etc while waiting. Service was great along with the price. The view was amazing because you get to see the golf course and the mountains in the background. read more
