My husband and I chose Harmony Forge Inn & Barn as our out of state wedding venue for 2 reasons…read more 1.) It doubled as a place to stay for my immediate family who were all travelling from Austin, Texas and 2.) Our ceremony and reception would only be steps away from each other! (easier for guests). The Inn: The mansion is a beautiful 4 bedroom, 4 full bathroom, 1 half bathroom estate complete with parlor, dining room, kitchen (2 refrigerators), and beautiful photogenic staircase. I paid for the full weekend package, which includes all 4 bedrooms and entire house from Friday 8am until Sunday at noon. I also paid for the rehearsal dinner to be held in their dining room area, but once I arrived, the décor in the dining room was too drab for my taste and I ended up setting up in the barn. I would have set up the rehearsal dinner outside, but it unfortunately rained on Friday and Saturday. Some of the old décor is beautiful, but the window treatments and table cloths were just not to my taste and I could not be photographed next to them. However, the wood accents were to die for (staircase)and the house structure was very lovely. The Barn: Perfectly spacious and easy to make glamorous with the right décor. We used globe lights and hung them from the ceiling and it really provided an upscale vibe. I used all real china and glassware, added a few DIY touches like paper flowers, newspaper programs and tall lighted branch centerpieces to execute the look I was going for- rustic glam-it was relatively easy to accomplish. The space can be used for up to 160 guests per the management, but I wonder how crowded that would be. We had a good use of space with 110 guests, but I don't think I would have liked any more people in that size space. (Especially since it rained on my wedding day and we had to set up a temporary ceremony in the dj space in the barn, there definitely would not have been room if we had had any more people. The Cons: 1.) I was very stressed on Friday setting up the barn for the reception. It was hard to get a hold of management for setting up additional tables/chairs. And they forgot a table I requested for the rehearsal dinner I needed for gifts. 2.) Management seemed disorganized. They told me they might rent out the additional room on Saturday night, which I paid for in my full wedding package, until my dad called and they said that was a mistake on their part. They also forgot I had paid for the rehearsal space and I had to remind them. The chairs and tables (they set up) were squished up near the front of the barn and I had to move all the tables back for more room which was time consuming (they set up tables according to your specifications, but it was not like the picture I drew) 3.)The fridges are full of old food which is good or bad depending on who you are, but I would have preferred it empty since how do you know how old that stuff is in there? 4.) THE AC UNITS!!! OMG. They are so loud and the house was SOOOOOO hot. 5.) The barn port-a-potty(ies); I'm not sure we had more than one in operation, I specifically remembered 2 when I visited and it was much larger with 2 stalls, then on my wedding day I only remember seeing one and it was small. I would rate this venue a 3-4/5 based on my experience there, I expected more hospitality. At the end of the day, I felt like we were not super welcome there, more of a nuisance to them. No one really talked to us, or asked us how we were doing during an obviously stressful weekend where all of my plans were literally drowning with the rain. I just expected a little more kindness or at least one conversation with the people who lived there. If you like to be left completely alone, then I'm sure this won't bother you.

A side stop between State College and Harrisburg. We went with friends and brought a few bottles of wine (byow-no cork fee). We were the last seating of the night at 7:45 PM. This is a fixed price, fixed menu, 5-course meal, with a surprise 6th appetizer, all with a "Fall" theme as we visited in September. This is a farm-to-table restaurant with many items coming from their garden. I wouldn't say the menu options were my favorite but the presentation was excellent. Everything was delicious, service was great and it was a beautiful evening with friends. We were there past 10 PM as the restaurant came to a close. I'm glad places like this exist outside of the typical urban setting - thank you!

I love this place and really want it to succeed. But the food is only ok. I would love to see them fully embrace local--not just buy local but work with local purveyors to really understand how to be unique. Also, they need a more imaginative chef. I was there a few weeks ago and got the smoked trout salad. Trout should be on their menu every weekend considering they sit on two of the best trout streams in PA. Yet, the trout was finished with an Asian sauce. Big miss. Would have been much better with yogurt dill or horseradish--and local horseradish was in season (as was dill but not Teriyaki). I have been there many times when they make this kind of mistake. It's always just a little off. For instance, the soft pretzel is ok, but really too sweet to be authentic to the area--more like Auntie Anne's than a real PA Dutch pretzel. Their bread could and should be phenomenal. Not so much. Their desserts should be new takes on local baked goods. Not happening. I want so bad for the Elk Creek to do well. I love the atmosphere and the beer. But the place really isn't doing much important or inspiring with their food. I know the Valley very well. What about a local charcuterie plate from local sausage and cheeses? I know. That would require working with local farmers to really understand what products are needed to pull that off. But hey, give it a try. What about working with local poultry purveyors to come up with imaginative pates? Liver is very indigenous to the area. What about derivations of local PA Dutch and German foods--I would love to see a take on the classic PA Dutch Po Pie. Instead, it's pretty uninspired when it should be outstanding considering the amount of local produce, poultry and products available. The problem is that it's only local to a point--buying local. It should work to help the Valley create a distinct identify for its food, teach and educate growers and suppliers to deliver contemporary product and have a chef who leads instead of just upgrade pub fare. I am only leaving this review because I deeply want the Elk Creek to be more--not just a brew pub with some food. But rather, I want it to be an example of how a co-operative effort can transform farm to table. Unfortunately, the Elk Creek's food is ok at best. It could be great. Disappointed by Managerial Conduct My recent dinner outing at Elk Creek Cafe with four friends left me deeply disheartened by the manager's behavior and overall disappointed with the experience. Upon ordering a ribeye steak cooked to medium well, I was dismayed to find it arrived at the table completely well done, lacking any hint of pink and notably tough to cut. I promptly notified our waitress, Cecelia G, who kindly agreed to take it back to the kitchen for a replacement. However, what followed was a jarring encounter with the manager that overshadowed any hopes of a smooth resolution. Instead of acknowledging the mistake and offering a sincere apology, the manager approached our table with an inexplicable defensiveness and passive-aggressiveness. They insisted that the steak was prepared according to their restaurant's standards, almost implying that my expectation of a medium-well steak was somehow unreasonable. Their offer to bring out the steak again to "show us the pink" felt more like a challenge than an attempt to rectify the situation. Eventually, they begrudgingly agreed to prepare a new steak to medium, but the interaction left a palpable sense of discomfort lingering in the air. In stark contrast to the manager's demeanor, our waitress, Cecelia G, provided exemplary service throughout the meal. Her friendly demeanor, attentiveness, and efficiency were commendable and stood in stark contrast to the manager's behavior. For prospective diners at Elk Creek Cafe, it's important to be prepared for potential encounters with such passive-aggressive management and deviations from the national standard in steak doneness. Additionally, while some menu items like the chicken sandwich and burger proved decent, others, like the poke bowl, were utterly disappointing, to the extent that one of our friends had to seek an alternative dinner option afterward. In summary, while the food at Elk Creek Cafe may have its hits and misses, it's the manager's unprofessional conduct that truly tarnishes the dining experience. Based on my encounter, I cannot in good conscience recommend this establishment to anyone in central PA. read more

We liked: - great atmosphere and service - belgian styles fries + sauces (where else in the area can you find that?) - local focus - great beers, especially the IPAs. - the scenic/country drive from state college We didn't like: - the beer sampler was a little expensive (a comparable one at otto's is $5) - the food we tried, taste wise, was nothing special. Similar to: Otto's. Tip: Make sure to have reservations on busy nights (which I'd assume to be Fridays and Saturdays). that would be especially worth it to have a reservation for that big table by the window. Details: We got in pretty early, and were waiting for a couple more people so we ordered their $8 beer sampler and some delicious belgian-style fries with sauces ($4-$5 I think). Not a bad deal at all. Atmosphere was great. Only used day light until dawn, at which point this put up candles for dinner. We were sitting at the huge table right by the entrance. It was overlooking the street, and was definitely the best spot in the whole place. The waitress/owners were great. We had two toddlers with us, and they were very accomodating. The food was really promising, with pretty much everything locally grown/harvested. Meal menus on the chalkboard have fancy names, and you'd expect the chef to know what he's doing especially for the price. Entrees are in the $17-$35 range, expect for the sandwiches/burgers. I ordered my burger medium-rare, but it was very rare and quite thick. My girlfriend ordered a lentil stew which was rather uninspired and blend but very filling.
