But it's old school and I really enjoyed sitting outside with my dog and the views. This pizza is close to greatness. Thin, light, flaky, crispy delicious crust - around the outer third. Sadly the middle suffered from an excess of toppings, turning it into a goopy mess especially as it sat. But the sauce is wonderful - basically seemed like little more than a puree of good quality tomatoes, as it should be. Cheese tasted like good quality, also. There was just a bit too much of it for the crust, which also could've used maybe just 3 more minutes in the oven. Undercarriage was just a little undercooked. While here I ordered the vegan pho at the counter. When the food came out they had the meatball pho. I confirmed it was vegan and the server said I ordered meatball, then had me pay extra for the remake. She brought back the same soup (beef broth) with the meatballs removed and veggie toppings added (there was still a meatball left in the soup). My very first experience with Elkhorn pizzeria was several years ago, and was not great. However their service seems to be getting much better, and the quality of the food is excellent. The pizza I typically get from Elkhorn is very good by New York standards which, at this altitude, is impressive. My last order had toppings of extra cheese, mushrooms, onions and anchovies. This pizza was perfectly cooked and perfectly made. I've never ordered a pie where they put the anchovies under the cheese. It made the saltiness blend in so sweetly and better than I've ever had anywhere. But I didn't just have plans to eat this pizza straight from the box. I had been dabbling with the idea of smoking some of it with Hickory wood, and that's exactly what I did. The smoke flavor was an excellent compliment to the sweetness provided by the onions, the cheese and crust. And I would say that the peppery accent of smoke embellished the saltiness of the anchovies. The owner is great and has added pho to the menu. This place exceeded our expectations! The staff was super friendly, informative, and helpful, guiding us through how to order, what food options there were, and the great things about this place. On the outside, it looks just like a pizza restaurant, but on the inside, they serve a duo of pizza, other Italian cuisine, Pho, and other Vietnamese food all in one amazing place! I had the tofu pho with no veggies and it was delicious, their bahn mi was also very flavorful and a good portion. Pizza is sold in pies or slices with many topping options, they even have great promotions for lunch/dinner. This place deserves way more notice and recognition! I live for pho, and this was a refreshing classic experience, it wasn't over the top extra with too many ingredients, it was perfect. The only good aspect of this restaurant is the service. It's prompt and friendly and the people taking orders are knowledgeable about the menu. There are also good drink offerings. The pizza itself is overly greasy and doesn't have a ton of flavor. The chicken strips and salad bar have the same issue as well. Last time I went there was a stack of folded pizza boxes on the wall which, to me, indicates that nobody wants their leftovers to go. The restaurant is in a decent location on the edge of town, and its large windows provide a good view of the nearby mountains. The food is so lackluster, however, that I won't be back. There's a pizza place in the Love's gas station a stone's throw away that is a decent alternative if you have a hankering for it. read more

Really enjoyed the food at this place. Enough to go back the next day! Went on Saturday with a huge group. We had preordered and simply gave our names when we arrived and very soon our food was coming out. Meatballs subs that even after hiking all morning were almost too big to eat. The pizzas come in lots of sizes and they are tossing those crusts right there. You can watch them load your ingredients and they aren't shy with those. Day two we went back for a generous, simple salad and one of those pizzas. I saw some noodle bowls coming out but didn't see them anywhere on the menu. The lucky people who got them were very happy. When we left I asked the woman bringing out most of the food about what secret did someone have to know to get that gorgeous soup. She looked at us like we had clown noses and said 'Order off the menu' then side glanced at the whiteboard to indicate our total lack of observation... only to discover the whiteboard had been turned around and showed blank. This pizza place was recommended by friends who said it was the best pizza in the ski resort/Pikes Peak area. Being from the East Coast, I am somewhat skeptical when people recommend pizza places out West but I was pleasantly surprised. The pizza was New York-style and really good. Used to be a great place to get a pizza. We've been to Elkhorn twice on this trip to Buena Vista and both times a big disappointment. The first time we called in the order for take out, aside from being on hold for a while, our pizza and breadsticks were both burnt and despite showing up in 30m as noted on the phone, it was cold. On our second visit, we stopped in for takeout. A simple meatball sub took almost a half hour to receive. "Something happened" to the first one they made and someone else ate it. Strange since we were the only customers in the place. The overall appearance was messy, there were tables with food left on them, napkins and other waste all over the floor in the dining area and in the food prep area in the back. One of the employees swept behind the counter and just left the pile in front of the entry way. Someone else used a broom to push the pizza boxes back on a shelf, putting the bottom of the broom right over the food prep area. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more
