Delicious food! Ellē is a popular breakfast/lunch spot in mt. pleasant that I've been wanting to try. We came on a Saturday morning so it was pretty busy. Seating is first come first serve. I went with their yogurt with housemade granola, an orange almond rosemary coffee cake and an iced miso caramel latte. My friend got their breakfast sandwich and a hot miso caramel latte. They also had fresh sourdough that I was tempted to try, but hope to grab one next time. My yogurt and granola bowl was delicious! The homemade granola really makes a difference, and the jam that came with it was amazing. The coffee cake was also so unique. The orange flavor was subtle but sweet enough, and cake itself was really soft and fresh. For my latte the flavor was very faint. I could barely taste the caramel or miso in it, which is a bummer because I was looking forward to trying it. Overall this was a great breakfast spot to meet a friend or even to grab something to go! Be warned! They automatically add a 20% gratuity. I don't understand why restaurants have to do this. Just raise the price of their food. The tip should be a reflection of the service provided. We only got one food item and then also ordered 2 teas. The food item was a tuna croquette, and that was really good. It was expensive for 3 tiny croquettes, but the flavor was complex with a nice acidity. The two teas were pretty generic black tea and green tea. I had the prix fixe dinner, which included: - Snacks plate (4/5) - Nice shot of mushroom soup, great butter to go with the bread, tasty pickles, etc - Beef tartare (3.5/5) - Solid - White fish with crackers (3/5) - Maybe I have an overly specific idea of what whitefish salad tastes like, but this dish wasn't super smoky, and the fish itself was more chunky than creamy. i looooooove ellē! we stopped by after dinner at another restaurant in the neighborhood because I wanted dessert and Eli came to mind immediately. and it was an great idea because everything we had was incredible!! we were able to get seated immediately despite it being a friday night around dinner time and the space being cozy. i think we somehow beat the dinner rush? I have never had anything remotely similar to the caramel popcorn, bay leaf flan that we had, my only complaint was that I could've eaten an entire casserole dish size of this dessert, and it was served on kind of a small plate. it was so unique and delicious. I will be thinking about this for a while! i had it with the Root Awakening (non alcoholic) which was so refreshing and not too sweet. additionally, the service we received was so warm and friendly, despite being very busy. We definitely felt that we received care and attention even though our bartender had a full bar to run, he was even able to offer recommendations to us and make conversation. I visited Elle recently and it was pretty good, but not amazing. I was expecting all of our dishes to be outstanding, but there were only a few real winners. I specifically made an early reservation during happy hour, but learned from the hostess they only have HH at the bar (this isn't clear on their website). To her credit, she let us order from the HH menu at our table. Our server was also excellent -- friendly, knowledgeable, and checked on us the right amount. I was impressed with the service overall. Many dishes on the menu looked good to us. We almost ordered a la carte but decided to go big and get the prix fixe, which was four courses each, plus a starter snack plate, for $85pp. Although the courses are the same as the main menu, the portions are smaller, so it's hard to know which is the better value. We began with a snack plate, which included gazpacho, fried squash blossoms, some kimchi, and sourdough bread + butter. I am not a gazpacho fan but this was the best I've ever had - creamy and great flavor. The squash blossoms were also excellent and the best ever. Elle is known for the sourdough and I found it a fine, if standard, example of the form. The kimchi was not for me (too bitter) but I'm not a big kimchi fan generally. So, our meal started off very well. From the main menu, our apps were grilled romaine (caesar salad) and grilled broccoli -- both stand-out dishes, but I give the edge to the broccoli. The caesar was relatively typical and a little overdressed, in my opinion. Our second course was sourdough spaghetti and mussel escabeche. I would pass on the spaghetti -- boring -- but liked the mussels, although my companion did not. For our main course, we had the halibut and pork loin. The halibut was the winner here - no notes. I liked the pork loin, though my companion did not. I wish the spaghetti, mussels, and pork loin had all been warmer. Dessert was cheesecake and espresso semifreddo, both of which were pretty typical. I expected a little more surprise and delight from the menu overall. Our drinks were daiquiri, old fashioned, back 2 life, and the hi-lo combo (beer and a shot) which were all fine. Dinner was $260 all in and was good, but didn't quite meet expectations. read more

Went here for dinner instead of bakery / coffee. Got the stratcciatellA appetizer which was really good. The mushroom toast was also good. The flavors blended together really well. The honey goat cheese cake was the star of the show, really unique flavors but excellent execution. The only dish that fell a bit flat was toasted sourdough spaghetti. It tasted a bit bland and was missing more flavor. A special note, the service here is truly excellent. We wanted to try a couple cupcakes but since we went for dinner and the bakery was about to close, they gave us a couple cupcakes (which were delicious) and a whole baguette for free. read more

Really cute catch all cafe in Mt Pleasant. We got the tandoori chicken sandwich and the Reuben. Chicken tandoori was 10/10 delicious interesting flavor with that curry coming through. Really enjoyed the bread however it was so toasted it scraped the roof of my mouth lol and was sore for days. The food is so you'll you hurt yourself gobbling it down. Sorry, Ellē, it's all you, not me. We came here for an early dinner, and without making reservations, there was such difficulty in getting a table in the main dining room. I very well much understood that in order for one to be seated in the dining room, you are required to order from their tasting menu - that's what we wanted to do. But, we were continued to be 'pushed' to sit at the bar/high-top tables, which was a no. I know that they accept walk-ins, and because we arrived right when they had opened, there was no one else - even throughout the rest of our dining experience, the dining room was not filled to its full capacity, there shouldn't have been such an issue when they could have checked their system that would have shown plenty of seats were available. The tasting menu offers a so-called '5-course tasting menu', which the 1st course was their bread tray; the 2nd-4th, inclusive of the dessert, each had 3 options to choose from. The 'snacks', aka bread tray, had a cup of mushroom dashi, radish kimchi (or, as Ellē calls it, 'Korean water kimchi'), pommes paillasson, and sliced bread with butter. The mushroom dashi was very earthy, and I didn't like the legumes that were sitting at the bottom; they didn't seem to have been cooked thoroughly, as they were hard to bite. The radish kimchi could have been pickled longer, and the liquid the thinly-sliced carrots and the cubed daikon were sitting in were cloudy and looked unappetizing. The pommes paillasson was like a little potato cake, topped with caviar - this was the preferred item on the tray, but it was more on the saltier end; the sliced bread was a little dry, and the room-tempered butter was sitting on what looked like a smear of 'salted caramel', but this did not do anything to the flavors - I wished the butter was salted or had sprinkles of sea salt on top. For the 1st course, we had: +Hay-Aged Comte Tart - prepared with shio koji pear and arugula; this was more on the sweeter end and seemed more appropriate for dessert rather than as a 1st course; it had a creamy consistency, and we just felt confused with the dish +the Scallop Crudo - with toasted nori, creme fraiche, and XO sauce; the scallops were sliced into 3 layers; the toppings and the sauce didn't seem to complement the fresh scallop; it was a strange dish For the 2nd course, we had: +the Black Pepper Cavatelli - with wild foraged mushrooms, roasted hazelnut, and escarole - this was my preferred dish of the night, albeit, it was super salty; if you're a mushroom lover, you'd enjoy this dish; it had a light cream sauce, but the dish seemed to have been missing something, whether it was an ingredient or a topping +the Smoked Whitefish Toast - with creme fraiche, fried capers, baby fennel, and pickled shallots; I love whitefish salad, so I was curious to see what Ellē's version was - the whitefish salad didn't seem to have been drained properly, as it was extremely wet; it could have used more seasoning, as it was bland; the bread slice that was used wasn't really toasted, but it was soft and fluffy For the 3rd course, we had: +the Chicken-Fried Skate - with parsnips, baby fennel, and grace de poisson; I absolutely disliked this dish; it tasted quite awful! Wasn't sure what was going on here, but the mushy 'batter' on the skate was inedible; the skate itself wasn't delicate or light, but super dense and heavy; there seemed to be some creamed parsnips that acted like mashed potatoes, but it was super thin and gloopy; the side salad with was not good, as it was super strong; I guess if you're a black licorice fan? Overall, this was probably one of the worst dishes I've had +the Cage-Roasted Squab - with grilled chicories, brown butter sunchoke, and a confit leg; the squab itself was actually super tender and flavorful; slightly on the saltier end, this was one of the better squab dishes I've had! For dessert, was tried: +the White Chocolate Mousse - with black sesame brittle and yuzu; had a grainy texture with no flavor +the Honey Goat Cheese Cheesecake - with blood orange, pomegranate, and almond pecan crumb; had a grainy texture with no flavor; could have used more of the blood orange and the pomegranate For drinks, I had the Sour Wilbur, which was a mocktail; it had a nice tartness to it, but it wasn't filled to the top. We were just extremely disappointed in the food, since there were such high raving reviews from other previous patrons. However, the price point did not fit the dishes that were being offered - each dish was either super bland or super salty, and there was nothing that made any of them stand out. Service was friendly, but there were long lulls between each course; we were also never checked-in or asked whether we were enjoying anything (because, we really weren't and left about 85% of the food on the plates!). Finally tried this place! Stopped for a quick happy hour drink & dessert (dessert not included on happy hour menu). I liked that they call it "unhappy hour" but i will say i wish it was longer!!! (its 5:30-6:30) I went on a Thursday and they weren't pack and the service was very quick. Callie & Brandon at the bar are lovely! The espresso semifreddo was DELICIOUS you can definitely taste the coffee and chocolate. We've been going to Elle once or twice a year since it opened, and somehow, the food keeps getting better. At this point, it is embarrassing that the Michelin Guide still has them unstarred on the Bib Gourmand list. I suspect the raters are hung up on the more low-key, casual ambiance, but that's not how it's supposed to work: the food they're churning out is better than what we've had recently at Dabney, Bresca, and other one-stars in the same general genre. Specifically, we tasted just about everything on the new Summer menu: + Best caesar salad we've ever had, with daikon and anchovy melding perfectly with a small, spicy kick + Extraordinary Summer vegetable plate, which goes beyond the simple throw-it-all-together veggie plates you get elsewhere + Arguably the best sourdough bread in town + Homemade past that's better than Fiola's + Talented servers who hit just the right cadence of involvement I could go on, but for now suffice it to say that we can't wait to go back. I live near Ellē and love coming here for a little treat. I am a vanilla latte lover and they have one of my favorite vanilla lattes...they're just a bit expensive, so I only get it when I'm really wanting to treat myself. Pastries and breakfast sandwiches have always been great. I love that they have kimchi! I finally came here for cocktails with a friend recently, too. And it was an amazing experience! Nothing on the cocktail menu was really speaking to me, but the bartender was so great and made me a water lilly after I told her how I like citrus and crème de violette. Went here for my husbands birthday celebration and while the food was phenomenal, the fact that everyone was friendly with excellent service is what will keep us coming back to this place. Definitely want to try the chefs tasting menu our next visit. We sat in the back portion of the restaurant but loved how the front also looks like a bakery/restaurant combo. We started with the sourdough bread which is made in house, with cultured butter this is a must have off the menu. We also shared a side of roasted carrots and the salad which were both on the lighter side given our entrees were heavy. We enjoyed these, especially the salad. For our entrees we're shared the black pepper cavatelli with wild mushrooms, another must have perfectly cooked and creamy. It was still warm when I opened my box! The turnovers were absolutely perfect! Buttery, crisp, flaky! Filling was perfect amount and fruity but, for my palate, it could've been any fruit... Absent was the unique floral note that makes guava... well, guava. Yet still was worth the drive! My GOD the frangipane! I'm over the moon for the brioche though! Especially warm out of the oven and piping hot with the rich scent of almond!! I've heard a lot about this place over the past couple of years but have never been able to come through. I read that they were selling smash burgers and finally decided to give it a go. We placed an online order for a double smash burger (might as well do it big), a quinoa tempeh burger, and loaded cool ranch fries. Pickup wasn't easy but mainly because I rarely come here so I wasn't prepared to not have anywhere to sit in my car so keep that in mind. Had to circle back using the parkway. Luckily I dropped my girlfriend off to pick up. The smash burger was pretty much a 10/10 in my opinion. The patties weren't super thin as I expected but I really liked how meaty it was. I added the pickles, cheese and fancy sauce which were the perfect toppings. Gave a nice crunch, creaminess, and tanginess. The quinoa tempeh burger may be one of the best constructed veggie/vegan burgers I've ever had. Most crumble in one bite but it stayed together like a regular beef burger. The avocado and kimchi add ons really helped up the flavor since it was mainly quinoa. The fries were crazy. I saw cool ranch and we had to add it. The brisket, jalapeño, and ranch add ons just put it on another level. I do wish there was some sort of cheese in them because it was hard to get toppings on fries. Toppings were just kinda separated. Overall this was a great dinner and I look forward to coming back soon. Review for the Chef's Choice dinner menu. Wow! I wish I could give this six stars, we were blown away by the new Chef's Choice dinner menu at Ellē. If I remember correctly the staff said they rolled out this new menu (that's not really on the menu) about three weeks ago. It features seasonal courses, like pork in a cherry glaze sauce (I'm sure that's not the technical term, but my goodness it was phenomenal). Drink pairings were also great, some unique and some basic, like the finisher drink wasn't the typical amaro, but instead a totally accessible and drinkable vermouth that I would never think to end the night. Kudos to the chefs and wait staff, all were fantastic. The have a 20% service charge on the bill, but we found everyone so wonderful that we tipped them a bit more. read more

I've been to Ellē a few times now, both before pre-COVID times so not sure how it is currently. Ellē is a hidden gem in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It does it all. It's a cafe for laptop junkies and coffee snobs, a restaurant for hungry souls for lunch and dinner, and a just a straight up bar for those who seek their favorite poison. With a tasty breakfast sandwich, a pour-over coffee, a pastry, and a bar seat next to a power outlet, I had a good/productive time getting work done. I want to love Ellē. I really do. I love buying and supporting local, especially when the decor is dreamy and whimsical like Ellē. But apart from the cute decor, I'm really not sure why Elle ranks so high on best restaurants list. Honestly, the food is just okay. One time I ordered a grilled cheese. It was so bland that not never the mustard on the side couldn't save it. And if you ask me, it's hard to mess up a grilled cheese. Cheese and bread grilled together is probably one of the tastiest things in the world. So what went wrong? To me, they were just trying too hard with the types of cheeses used. And none of their cheeses had that tangy zing you look for in a grilled cheese. I've also had a breakfast sandwich from them. It was good, but just too salty. Lattes and scones also.. good but nothing too special. The baristas are not all that friendly. I don't think I've ever seen one smile. Again, I really want to love Ellē. Sadly though, I have to be honest. I do hope to be able to update my review in the future with higher stars. read more

[Coronavirus review] Obviously, no one in the restaurant business is doing well during the pandemic lockdown, but if I were to list places that have adapted and are making the best out of tough times, this one must be up there. If you think everyone in a certain demographic has turned their life into an instagram bread baking exhibition, you'll have no explanation for why this equally bougie place, which is now operating mostly as a pre-order bakery, sells out many of their items in minutes. You have to order a day in advance and it's only three days a week. Pickup was organized, with plenty of distance observed. The breads I ordered - a hearty whole wheat and seed loaf and a lighter baguette - both hit the spot. Something in there was a tad salty, but I liked my seeds and the breads are providing an excellent means of delivery for my hummus and cashew butter. The store offers a few grocery items in addition to the baked goods, but I can render no opinion on the cafe while business restrictions remain. read more

Really don't understand why this place is so crowded at brunch time. We went Saturday at noon. It was mobbed, but we had a reservation. No brunch menu, just a very limited lunch menu. We ordered the Cesar and a Ruben. Neither was very exciting. Very greasy. The chips that were supposed to come with the sandwich didn't come until we asked, and then got a bag of chips. My coffee drink never came because the espresso maker couldn't keep up. Servers seemed to not be too worried about making up for it. Would not recommend. read more

Ordered one of their most popular item - Guava turnover initially as there were 3 of them on display when I making the payment at the counter. However, I was informed that it got sold out 10 mins later, and I had a bay cheddar scone as a substitute instead. This restaurant is so beautiful we decided to stop in and sample some stuff. We got the angel food cake and a couple of drinks. The angel food cake was pretty good with orange custard sauce and the ambiance of Ellē was exquisite. It's a low key vibe with perfect mood lighting and a great selection of food and drinks. It's a bit surprising at first to see that the operating model is for people to wait in line to order. I suppose because the vibe doesn't fit the mold I have for "fast casual"-like places. That being said, it didn't seem like anyone minded waiting in line. Breakfast menu is short but good. I got the quiche of the day (mushroom; $8), which came with a side salad. I found the quiche is teeny bit too greasy and the salad a teeny bit too dressed, but the flavors were good. I'm keeping my review at 4 stars, however: 1) The seasonal latte, which was cardamom and almond, was damn good. I'm not sure it was $6 good, but I will definitely be talking about that latte to others. 2) Our spontaneous purchase of a peanut butter donut at first seemed unnecessary, but it was really great.
