Rude receptionist gave me attitude when I inquiried about a payment I made a year ago. It turns out that billing had not matched the payment with the billing invoice. The receptionist told me that it was not her problem and that I should call billing. I asked for the phone number and she said look at the billing statement. I said I don't see it and she replied, well everyone else can see the number but you. I eventually got the number from her after going back and forth, but it was the worst experience of my life with a receptionist. Never going to this office, again. read more

We scheduled for my mother to see Dr. Mellow. My mother is also a physician and as such we have pretty specific expectations from doctors that we go see. Dr Mellow's office is in the sub basement of a building (i.e. not the first basement, but the basement underneath the basement). It is extraordinarily warm in her lobby and the two times that we went to see Dr. Mellow neither appointment started on time. Dr. Mellow has poor bedside manner. We were speaking with a physician colleague of hers and she came into the office to let him know that he was taking too long with my mother right in front of her. Feedback like that should be given in private and it put us all in an awkward position. Dr. Mellow's main focus is to make sure she can run multiple expensive tests on you that either you or your insurance company will pay for. She misdiagnosed my mother and only because my mother is also an internist did we catch it. Lastly, Dr. Mellow's office charges $75 to provide routine imaging from tests that your insurance company already paid for. She will misdiagnose you and then when you ask for the records so another physician can take a look, she will demand $75 before releasing them to you. All in all a poor experience. read more

This was my first appointment with Dr. Mellow. I was seen relatively on time, a 30 minute wait is the norm in New York City. I was afraid she would be like most Doctors: huff, puff, rush you in and out. Leave you in the Exam Room for 30+ minutes. Look at you for around 60 seconds. Push useless pills and tests on you, platitudes, talk over your head etc. Not the case! Dr. Mellow's bedside manner is absolutely outstanding. She listens, she asks you questions. She, not her MA, does your vitals etc. I was there for Cardiology Consultation, she asked thorough questions regarding my family's Cardio history. I did not feel rushed, I did not feel like there was a clock running. It was a pleasant experience. And let's face it, going to the Doctor is not always a pleasant experience. I work in Medicine. This is not a mill where they churn and burn 25 patients in an 7 hour session. I have seen the comments regarding the wait times. If you have to wait and see the Provider for 5 minutes that is an issue. If you have to wait and the Provider spends 30 minutes with you then there should not be an issue. My wife and I have been patients of Dr Mellow for over 15 years. She is a one of a kind doctor, and a wonderful person. How many times have you been to see a physician only to be rushed in and out in 15 minutes with none of your concerns addressed? This will never happen to you with Dr. Mellow. No matter what reason brings me in to see her, she checks me head to toe and is truly concerned with my total well being. I would guess the average time she actually spends examining me is 30 minutes minimum! She never rushes people in and out just to get your insurance money. She always gives great referrals to specialists who are at the top of their game. Once, when my wife had a stubborn cough, Dr. Mellow called her husband (a pulmonary specialist) in the middle of his busy day for a second opinion!! Dr. Mellow has been my cardiologist for five years and has also served as my GP periodically and presently. I went to her seeking a cardiologist who would monitor my situation proactively rather than my two prior cardiologists who were more passive. She has done that successfully and works to navigate the insurance landscape on my behalf. At the same time, she is not hysterical. As a GP, she is also knowledgeable and is a genuinely caring person who practices medicine for all the right reasons. A prospective patient will have to cut her some slack on wait times but I don't think she is outside the range of what just goes with the territory. She is worth the wait. read more

It's hard to believe that I saw the same Dr. Ellen Mellow who received such glowing reviews. I was a new patient wanting to establish a relationship with a primary care physician. Her website does say "internist" but she quickly told me that she's mainly a cardiologist, though she can do primary care (not very enthusiastically - I wondered if I'd come to the wrong dr). First a plus -no waiting time at all. She seemed pleasant, though harried. While her assistant took my blood pressure and ekg, she took my medical history.I respect a physician's time and I arrived organized, wth a list of medications, history, questions, etc. But immediately after she took my history, she said she had no time to talk to me, apologized, and promised she would listen to my issues and questions at a future appointment. As a new patient, I was amazed that there was no physical exam at all! She gave me paper work for future testing.She seemed to be on a 15-20 minute timer, but I rationalized that anyone can have a bad day and decided to follow through and see. When I came home, I read her diagnosis on a test order she gave me - medical initials that I had to research on the internet. Her diagnosis was severe (her word) left ventricle heart damage. I had no idea that I had a heart problem and she didn't say a word about it to me! I find that unconscionable. I canceled all future contact with her and I made an appointment asap with a cardiologist; while I'm waiting to see him, I'm in the limbo state of not knowing if medication or surgery are possible or necessary, if I'm in danger of a stroke or heart attack. The fact that Dr.Mellow didn't tell me anything, literally not one word about it, points to supreme indifference. Medicine by robot. read more

As a physician /patient I have grown critical of the changes in medicine that straight-jacket doctors into check-boxing their patients. I am grateful and relieved to meet with Dr. Mellow. I made my first appointment with Dr. Mellow (Internist) in July 2016 after having sudden and severe headaches, which would not improve using all the usual methods. My previous primary care doctor for the last 8 years had transitioned to a concierge style practice so I looked on ZocDoc for a doctor with great reviews and availability and luckily found Dr. Mellow. After my first appointment I knew I had found my new doctor. Not only were the reviews accurate, but I have to say it has been a long time since a doctor has been so thorough and hands on. She took a detailed history, gave me a physical, and performed all tests herself, not her assistant. Additionally, she was able to refer me to a specialist who saw me that same day (she called the specialist directly and he added me to his schedule). She also followed up with my care by the specialist to ensure that my medical needs were addressed. She is incredibly bright and caring. A great find, whether you are looking for an Internist or Cardiologist. I read another review here on Yelp in Oct 2016 giving Dr. Mellow 1 star; While I cannot possibly know the details or circumstances of that office visit, I can say that in the four office visits that I have had with Dr. Mellow, not one was as described by that reviewer. In fact, I have always had a slight wait to see the doctor, which is due to the length of time that she spends with each patient. I saw her in her capacity as an internist and she did not even mention that she was a cardiologist, and performed only tests necessary to diagnose and/or rule out medical conditions. Each time she spent at least 20-30 minutes with me, reviewing test results and discussing additional treatment options/referrals. Although I loved my last doctor, he spent far less time with me during each visit and did not follow through; I felt like I had to manage my own care. Dr. Mellow is a very sweet doctor. That being said, if your time is of ANY value to you, do NOT come to this doctor. Their office is the most disorganized, chaotic place I have ever been to. Besides the fact that this doctor never, ever runs on time, they just cannot keep anything straight, including even their medical charts. After waiting TWO hours to be seen by the doctor (I went in multiple times mind you, I gave her a chance and it was like this every single time) , they didn't even have my chart ready. The doctor and her receptionist/assistant were fumbling around for a while trying to locate the results of various tests I'd had done, and even after 20 minutes couldn't find the results for something I'd had done over three weeks ago. No excuse for that! No test should take a month to result. Seeing Dr. Mellow takes a little bit of the frustration away because she is just so sweet and caring, but I cannot put my trust in a doctor who can't manage to run an office. It's really scary how disorganized they are, makes you wonder if they miss important things because of it. Sadly, I will never be coming here again and my quest for a primary care doc in New York continues. I would not recommend coming here to anyone, unless they don't have a job and have hours to spend waiting around in an office to be seen. Even then, the disorganization would make me stay away. You can just tell that the office is falling apart and they have no idea what they're doing. I have to agree with the other five-star reviews. It is true that Dr. Mellow is often running very late. The reason for that is that she actually spends significant time getting to know her patients and answering every single question they may have. I have never felt so thoroughly looked after by a doctor. You may not be rushed in, but she also does not rush you out, which is more than I can say for any other doctor I've seen in New York. And yes, she is thorough--she orders more tests and schedules follow-up appointments to discuss your results. However, it's hard to see how this is a bad thing. Have you ever been in a zone where you lose sense of time because you are so intensely focused and engrossed with the subject at hand? This is how I would describe Dr. Mellow. No one is more important than YOU and YOUR HEALTH and she will take enough time to satisfy her quest to be thorough and accurate. She is a rare find in a city where most NY physicians have revolving door policies, allocating face time limited to 3-10 minutes where money/time drive their practices, rather than quality care. After a series of such doctors, It was a relief to find Dr. Mellow. Your health is far more important to her than your time or her money. She is simply the best physician I have ever met. If you are young and very healthy, not sure you or your time are worth her efforts, the long waits being the major complaint in the 1 star reviews. What a bonus that she is both an internist and cardiologist. If you have health issues, or are middle-aged or beyond, with Dr. Mellow you have a health partner for life who has taken the time to know you. She is exceptionally accessible and humble in her manner, belying her brilliance, Princeton and other Ivy League training. I first heard about Dr. Mellow from one of my clients who had just seen her for the first time. He spoke movingly about how he felt seen, heard, and cared for. I was so impressed that I asked for the doctor's name. I had no major complaints about my own doctor, but I didn't feel much connection to him, although I had been seeing him for years. Besides having some borderline hypertension, I was in good health. But moving further into middle age, I thought it would be good if I had a better relationship with my doctor, which I didn't feel possible with the doctor I had. I clearly remember my first appointment with Dr. Mellow, although now it's over five years ago. I sensed right away that I was meeting with someone who was very sincere, genuine, and perceptive. Dr. Mellow listened to me closely and she took her time. I also remember how she listened intensely to my heartbeat with her eyes closed! I was moved by her earnestness and focus. At that time she detected an irregularity in my heartbeat that had never been detected before, and that she has since kept a watchful ear to. In reading the reviews of other patients, I concur that the wait to see Dr. Mellow is an exercise in patience. Being in the healthcare field myself, I know it isn't easy to practice in the age of managed care. The kind of attention Dr. Mellow gives her patients has become a thing of the past in most doctors' offices. I had my 1st appointment with Dr. Mellow yesterday. She was on-time and very generous with her time. Rather than have a nurse take all of the initial intake information, she was the 1st person I saw when I went back, as she was already in the exam room (within 2 minutes of paperwork being filled out). Unlike traditional offices that may shuffle you back to one room, where you wait some time and then a nurse takes your vitals before you wait a bit longer and see the doctor. The traditional "shuffle" is a strategy that most doctors use it to appease patients and make them feel like they are being seen right away, while they typically wait 30 minutes to see a patient. Dr. Mellow was thorough, listened to me, and took time to explain testing, etc. to me. I feel fortunate to have her as my Primary Care Physician and I am thrilled to have found a wonderful, smart, and caring physician in the NYC area. read more

Did not seem very professional. I reached before time for my appointment and had to wait for more than half an hour after my appointment just to cancel it in the end. Even when I asked the front desk, how long it was going to take I did not get an answer. I went here coz my office is close by and I could get out during my lunch break but as they kept me waiting for all my lunch time I had to cancel my appointment and leave. I've been seeing Dr. Mellow since 2015. What I love about her is that she really listens to me and never rushes me out of the office. She takes her time to review everything and makes really smart suggestions on how to move forward with your care. I always feel very well taken care of. I really appreciate that they do not leave me in an exam room to wait for 30 minutes. When she's ready, she takes me and see's me. I never wait more than 30 minutes. I had an absolutely terrible experience when I came in for an appointment with Dr. Mellow. I came in to see Dr. Mellow for my annual physical. In total, my appointment took approximately 4 hours! I spent more than 1 hour waiting for Dr. Mellow to see me. Then I was taken back to a checkup room, where I changed into a robe and was told to wait for Dr. Mellow. I waited nearly an hour. Then Dr. Mellow came in to see me. She was very frazzled throughout the appointment (I guess she'd had a long day) and had trouble focusing on my questions. The full checkup took about 2 hours, because Dr. Mellow kept receiving phone calls from or about other patients, and had to take them (I have never had this happen at a doctor's office before). During my visit, the doctor's assistant asked me to write down my credit card number, in the case that my insurance company did not cover a procedure that I received (they said this is standard office practice). They also said they would call me in advance of ever putting any charges onto my credit card. I received an immunization that day and the assistant told me that if my insurance company did not cover it, the cost would come to about $100 at most. More than a month later, my credit card was randomly charged more than $200 by Dr. Mellow's office. I called to ask about the charge, and was told that my insurer had not covered the "cost of administering my immunization." No one called me in advance of putting the charge through to my card, and it was more than double the estimate the assistant had quoted. I highly recommend not going to this doctor. She and her staff have no consideration for patients' time. And while at the end of the day my immunization was not that much money, I think it is just wrong to misrepresent costs to patients and to lie about charging practices. read more

I don't often write bad reviews, however, I felt like I had to. I went to this doctor since I wanted to have a doctor that's local and close to work. The first time I went to her I spent 30 minutes sitting in the waiting room area, which I thought was more or less okay for NYC. I had a bad cold and she prescribed me a medication. Later when I went to the pharmacy I found out that that medicaiotn was really over the counter (that should have been my first clue!). She claimed that there were many potential things wrong with me and I needed to get both an echocadriogram done (I'm 27 years old!) and an utlrasound for my stomach. She then said that I would have to come back once I got all the tests done including my blood tests and only then she would review the results. This was puzzling to me, but I decided to go with it - maybe it was becuase I was sick. I had to come back two different times to get the echo and utlrasound done - not sure why they couldn't do it the same day. Both times I had to wait at least 20 minutes and take time away from work. After about a month and a half I finally got all my tests done. I went back for a follow-up so she can review my results. I ended up sitting in the waiting room area for 2 hours! After one hour I asked if I would be up soon, to which the receptionist replied, oh yes you're next. After 2 hours the receptiontist called a different girl, and claimed she never told me I was next. At that point I had to leave and requested to have a copy of all my results. The doctor never called to appoligize and never called me with my results. After showing the results to another doctor, I was told that there is a small problem that needs attention. Good thing I asked for a copy of my results since I have yet to hear from that doctor. I would not reccomend her to anyone and if anything tell people to avoid her at all costs. This is not the way to treat patients. read more

Stay away!! Dr. Mellow is very nice and will spend time w/ you but she over-prescribes and goes with her IDEA of what is bothering you rather than listening to your symptoms. I went in for a cough once and left w/ 3 prescriptions, including one that could potentially make me worse in the event that she misdiagnosed (WHICH SHE DID). she was convinced I had asthma despite having shown almost no signs of asthma and no difficulty breathing. After 5 days of bad reactions to what she had given me, I went to another doctor who said it was an infection and gave me the proper medication. read more

Dr. Mellow is an amazing, knowledgeable, and caring doctor. As far as the bad reviews go, when I have recommended her to friends, I warn everyone first - she's not someone to go to if you need a quick in and out at the office. You'll wait for her, especially later in the day. And she'll spend forever with you. She's like an old fashioned doctor - she will always fit you in, no matter what, she will thoroughly look into any question you have, she's even called her husband when I've been there late at night to go online and access files and help her get more info! She'll take everything seriously and is always courteous and respectful. If you do make an appointment, aim earlier in the day, and still - call before you head over to see how far behind schedule she's running and ask if you should come in any later than your appt. Because she does spend so much time, and because she'll always let you squeeze in last minute appointments, she's pretty much always running behind. But if you are willing to deal with that, she's the best doctor. Her specialty is cardiology, so she always runs echos and ekgs at my physicals, and if it weren't for her, no one would have ever caught the thyroid cancer when we did. In regards to the one reviewer who mentioned having to go in different days for the echo / ultrasound, since she is a smaller office, she has specialists that come in on certain days to perform those tests. Echos are on Wednesday evenings; I believe the ultrasounds are on Fridays. I highly recommend her and the friends and coworkers who have met with her love her, too. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Mellow. I was referred to Dr. Mellow by my PCP after chest pains sent me (a healthy 36-year old female) to the hospital over a weekend. I couldn't be more impressed by Dr. Mellow's knowledge, compassion, and efficiency. I was a total stranger, and Dr. Mellow saw me the day that I was referred, spent a considerable amount of time with me, calmed my nerves, and scheduled a necessary CT scan and echocardiogram for the following day. The day after, she was available to review the results with me during a long appointment. Do yourself a favor and see another doctor. Not only will you wait hours (literally) to see her, she will prescribe test after test after test, tests that are meant to garner income for her but not necessarily value for you as a patient. She is both a cardiologist and an internist but her main focus is cardiology and she will make every patient into a cardiology basket case if she can. She will not discuss test results on the phone but make you have another office visit (and another hours' long wait) so she can get the copay. I am sorry to review her so negatively, but have had recent experience with her that has made me question her competency as a doctor. Dr Mellow is the best doctor I've ever had. I went years without a doctor since moving to NYC and was referred to her by my allergist after she suspected I had a heart murmur and wanted me to get it checked out. She highly recommended Dr M and I could kill 2 birds with one stone seeing a cardiologist and general prac. My other gen prac was a doc in Soho who seemed to rush thru my appointments and didn't care if I had any concern. Dr M is one of the kindest, most caring, informative, and honest doctors I've ever met. Out of all of those amazing qualities her genuine care really stood out to me. I have awful anxiety and obsessively worry about the smallest issues and she will always make me feel at ease, even if the diagnosis isn't exactly what I want to hear. She performs many tests which is a GREAT thing. I needed blood tests for a surgery and she requested additional tests that I haven't had in years, as I am in the child bearing age and would like to one day have a child, so we went ahead with that as I wouldn't have thought to request that. She asks many questions and spends extra time with her patients bc she truly cares. I am used to being rushed out of my other "specialty" doctors offices. It's so nice to have someone genuinely care about my concerns instead of brushing them off and understands my anxiety. whether you receive good news or bad news, she will thoroughly explain the logistics of your diagnosis/issue. The longest Ive waited was 30-40 minutes. As someone else mentioned, this is NYC - there are waits for everything! My husband goes to another doctors and waits 1-2 hours at a time and there is even an "express appt process" for those who pay extra without the wait., so rich people can cut in line. The waiting room at the office is calming; I work remote so I bring my laptop and get my work done while I wait. if I don't feel like working it's a great escape from the general stress and chaos of the city and my job so I read magazines and just enjoy not having to take work calls to me that's therapeutic. After this glowing review i really highly recommend Dr M and I'm so happy I was lucky enough to be referred to her. It's great to have a gen prac who also specializes in cardiology as everyone should have their heart checked, esp in this stressful city! read more

I hate to give Doctor Mellow a bad review because her bedside manner is excellent and she does seem to really care about her patients. However, I've had a really bad experience in setting up appointments with her. I'll start by saying that on my first visit she did warn me that she was moving offices soon and also going on a vacation in the following week, so she gave me fair warning that things were going to be a bit hectic. But since then she's rescheduled twice, once only hours before the appointment. She only works between 9 and 5 so she should understand that people need to take time off of work to go see her and be a little more respectful of that. On top of that her office is messy and disorganized. Maybe it was because of the move, but I was having a test done where I was required to be topless and people were walking in and out of the room as if I weren't even there. Dr Mellow is the first and only doc I've ever met who texts me at random hours to see how I am (I had an irregular heartbeat which she found and treated, along with hypertension I didn't know I had and am now in remission thanks to her!!) So that other girl can complain about Dr Mellow being thorough and asking for tests, but without the tests she did for me I don't know if I'd still be here today. ALSO my sister, over 15 years ago, worked with her at Cornell on the cardiac unit, and when she found out I was seeing Dr Mellow responded by saying "She is the absolute BEST doctor I have ever worked with and a brilliant cardiologist!" This FROM A NURSE. And for those of you that don't know,... Nurses don't usually have too many nice things to say about doctors. So for her to say that is saying something. Bring a book... Although Dr. Mellow is very caring, the wait time is absolutely awful! Be prepared to wait over 1 hour just to be seen. Once you are called in, be prepared to continue to wait. Doctor Mellow is certainly a good doctor but her staff is soooo bad that it makes the whole experience a complete disaster.

Dr. Mellow takes the time to cover every concern, every visit. She's always friendly and professional and truly cares about her patients. She's the exact type of person you want on your side in case you ever need to deal with some of the scarier stuff life can throw at you.
