Came here, and had a hard time finding the place. Parking only takes cash. The place is on third floor or a sketchy building. I called prior to driving here and was told that they can do the sides only, I thought to myself... cool, I don't want the top trimmed anyhow. I finally get here and Ellen says that she can only "clean the sides"... I mean c'mon... all men can use their home daily blades to do that. She needs to be explicit in her offerings and not waste people's time. I wouldn't come here or recommend this place. Cannot recommend. This is a review from several appointments I had with Ellen, in the year 2020, and the height of the COVID epidemic. I selected her shop to help minimize my risk of COVID. To be brief, her practices and procedures were reasonable, although at times she relaxed her practices seemingly due to laziness and/or a changed attitude toward the necessity of ensuring the same level of safety and risk control. I found her haircuts were decent and competent but overpriced, considering the basic haircuts I was paying for. Nothing special or unique or especially talented with how she cut my hair or the final result. 15-20 bucks anywhere else would have given me the same result. I tipped well, always polite and respectful and always on time for my appointments. Everything you want in a customer, that is if you are a smart business person. I was continuing with her to ensure COVID risk control. Prior to one haircut we had a conversation while making my next appointment, lasting maybe 3 minutes long. She began to tell me about her expansion plans and I asked questions regarding if and how her COVID practices might change. She responded with vague, inconsistent, answers which naturally, (in my opinion) to anyone who heard them would generate further questions. Did she think she was smarter than me and could just slide some BS past me? I asked my follow up questions and rather than answer them honestly and clearly she decided to respond that she didn't want to cut my hair any more. Does that sound to you, the reader of this review, as immature, unprofessional, lazy, and ridiculous? If your answer is yes, what do you think the chances are that Ellen might show this behavior in other ways if you decided to do business with her? For example, what if you had questions about her work or were not happy with her work, or what if you had questions about the cleanliness or were concerned about cleanliness or what if you had questions about her billing or disputed your bill? read more

Finding a great barber is as challenging as finding the right doctor, dentist, cleaner, mechanic, brand, grocery with the exception it's just a little more personal. I initiated my experience with Ellen in 2017 and thought it just might be appropriate to update my review. If you're looking for the highest quality customer service, cut, environment, price point, style and personality, you will not find better. When I arrived in HI I tried about seven stylists. Never even thought of trying a barber. Small things like the unbelievable neck shave, washing the hair, massaging the scalp is just calming and peaceful. Her shaving skills are beyond great. I have been to all of the barber shops in town Premier, Mojos, Men's hall, Sky, etc but Ellen The Barber has been the only barber I want to return to. She gave me the best cut and style when everyone else told me that my hair was "difficult" to work with. She's not your typical right out of hair school stylist or barber she's classically trained in Chicago with years of experience and will shape your hair to your specific head shape and hair texture. Conversation with Ellen about my hair was educational and much needed! She made sure that my haircut looked good without product before she applied product to give it a polished look. She is polite, courteous, and welcoming and clearly enjoys her work. She'll even offer you a shot of good whisky and a complimentary shampoo and straight razor shave on the back of your neck. I was recommended to her by my friend Thomas from Square Barrels and I have recommended her to a lot of people who are also very happy with their hair as well!
