Im a finicky with how I get my haircut because Im a bit thin on top. If its cut wrong, which is easy to do apparently, it really bothers me. Many stylists Ive gone to struggle with my instructions because I feel like they have their own idea of what they wanna do. No matter what I say, they cant adjust and I get the cookie cutter. Shirley listens extremely well and does an excellent job with my creative requests. She really puts me at ease because of her talent and conversational abilities. She works quickly and she does an fantastic job! That for me is the perfect combo! Shirley's safety protocols also make me feel at ease. You can never be too safe this day and age. When you walk in, she has a temperature check and hand sanitizer. The new customer waits outside on a cozy bench. Its all like clockwork with her. read more

They've also gone out of their way to provide a safe environment in the time of Covid, with scheduled appointments, time to clean and disinfect between clients, temperature checks, eye protection, clean drape for every client, and takes your information in case contact tracing needs to be done. For a stylish haircut and cheap cheap prices, come to Island Style Cuts, located right across the street from kapahulu safeway is this little family owned shop. My haircut came out to $16.75, cheaper than supercuts. When reading the reviews on here, Two things caught my attention, cheap prices and the fact that they use scissors. I've been to places where they will just use a buzzer the entire 15-20 minutes. Just because i want it short and spiky, doesn't mean buzz it all off.. Put some style and work into it!! Getting a haircut once every 4-6 weeks really adds up!! I've been to a couple hair salons when I was younger for prom etc. and it was $50 a haircut! that's crazy for guys in my opinion! Here at Island Style Cuts, they take their time cutting your hair to your liking. They make small talk and they are nice people. I like that they have a small T.V. in their little shop. It makes the time go by much faster! On the day that I came they were watching "Repo Games" on Spike TV which is a funny and interesting show. There are a few times when I can just fall asleep in the chair while they work on my hair.. but i end up waking up because my head keeps falling down! HAHA! I've found a new place to get my hair styled at very reasonable prices and I highly recommend this place to all the guys that are tired of getting bad quality haircuts and paying too much. Ive been coming here to cut my hair for the past 10 years or so along with literally 15-20 of my friends, all through word of mouth. My close group of guy friends all come here so its very similar to the movie Barber Shop, Ive never seen it but the premise is obvious. ISC is located conveniently across from Safeway, next to what used to be Labambas right down the street from Genki's :) I visit all three on a very regular basis This is a great place for anyone, the patrons range from toddlers to elders and many times the whole family is in to get their hair cut together. Chris and Shirley the owners are also husband and wife and this is surely going to be a business that will become a fixture in the Kaimuki area. Stalls are usually marked as being reserved for ISC, but last time I checked, they were vandalized. 3) MAKE A RESERVATION! Walk-ins are welcome, but they're slowly becoming more popular as the word gets out about dem (damn you, Yelp! j/k), so don't risk it! 4) CASH ONLY! No credit cards and no personal checks. Need an ATM? Go to Safeway across the street; just don't get run over en route there. ------------------ Time to throw in a wahine's (women's) perspective up in this "sausage fest" of reviews! (Har, har) For the purpose of self-disclosure, I did not start getting my hair cut from here until August 2009. HOWEVER, I have known and heard positive reviews about this place from as early as 2000 - 2001 from three different people (all guys ... where's the love from the wahines, I tell ya?). How so? My ex's good friend used to get his hair styled here every month and he raved to my ex about them. Out of sheer curiosity, the ex started going to them and confirmed the same thing. I find Chris and Shirley's approach to hair styling/cutting/trimming to be VERY refreshing and approachable. Unlike other places who charge you an arm, a leg and your third child to get your hair styled, their prices are extremely reasonable! Unlike those hair dressers/stylists who speak in a highly falutent language, are high makamaka (re: "snotty") and think *they* know what kind of cut/hair would look good on you - despite the fact that you've already told them what you want! - Shirley and Chris are just the opposite. They have personable, down-to-earth demeanors and will listen to what your needs/preferences are, offer their own honest and professional recommendations, and won't offer anything additional that they feel you won't need. (Yanno, like, maybe you just wanna go in for a regular haircut, but the stylist may attempt you to upgrade to a "wash and cut"? Or, how about getting your hair straightened? Maybe throw in some highlights, too?!) Ego trips, attempts to max out the customers' wallets and cattiness get thrown out the door here. Their interest lies in their customers and ensuring that each person leaves with a cut that they are satisfied with. Lastly, there is no correlation between the price they charge for a haircut and the quality of haircut you receive (i.e., "Just because they don't charge $100 for a haircut doesn't mean you'll get a crappy haircut"). They are both professionally trained, have been in business for over ten years, and have lots of satisfied repeat customers. They keep up with the latest hairstyles and trends, so your children and teens would especially love coming here, too! My 13-year-old "Little Sister" got her hair cut and received some colored highlights here 2 weeks ago and she was so happy with the results! Just in time to attend her 8th grade banquet. :) P.S. If I could give zero stars I would. I brought my hubby here thinking the good reviews will reveal a good haircut. Boy was I wrong. First it seems they only know how to cut your hair one style. My hubby has thick straight Asian hair. We asked for a trim, maintaining the back length because if it gets too short it will stick up. We were very explicit with this. In the end the back was cut short and the sides were very uneven. I had to deal with a very unhappy hubby for the whole week. He doesn't take the time to fade your hair. If you want a crew cut and or you are in the military then come here. read more

Bottom Line: Why get your hair cut and styled anywhere else? I've followed Shirley and Chris from when they used to work at a barber shop at Ala Moana, until they went out and opened their own shop. I've been getting my hair cut with them for about 15 years already, and I keep going back. You'll consistently get a great cut and style from ISC, and they are a lot cheaper than going to a fancy salon. They are also friendly and family oriented. As the other reviewer pointed out, you'll have toddlers all the way to grandpas in there. The place is always decorated with a mix of seasonal decorations, and some stuff related to fishing (Shirley decorates for the season, and I'm sure Chris has something to do with the fisherman related art hanging about.) It's always clean and tidy in there too. TIP: there's a bathroom reserved just for ISC, and it's clean! I know most guys won't care as much, but it's a good note for the gals who may be more selective... Another tip: make an appointment if you can! They do accept walk-ins though. Bring cash or check though - No CC accepted. They are very reasonably priced. I would not chance getting my hair cut at some barber shop chain like Fantastic Sams that hires people right outta school. ISC is definitely the better proposition. Shirley has been taking care of the haircuts for me and my two kids for a little more than a year. She's very friendly and understands all of our individual styles. I found Island Style Cuts through the recommendation of a friend. He has long hair so I asked him where he gets his hair cut and he said Island Style on Kapahulu. I gave them a call and made an appointment. I can always get a time I want if I call a week in advance. My hair is long and I don't like to spend any time taking care of it other than a daily shampoo and a quick brushing in the morning. She gave me a cut that's easy to take care of! My teenage son likes his hair long, but not too long, but not too short either. What??? He's pretty particular about what he wants. Anyway, Shirley has got him covered, too. She keeps him looking good and he always gets compliments about his hair after he gets a fresh cut. My daughter spends almost no time taking care of her hair. Finally found a place to take my toddler son for a hair cut! After braving that place in salt lake on 4 different occasions where 1) there are so many screaming kids that it sends my 14 month old into a frenzy 2) had the razor almost cut him and 3) spent way too much, Island Style Cuts is my choice to get a haircut for my son. I like it because Chris (who has a child of his own) is experienced in cutting kids hair, is calm, fast (important when you have a squirmy toddler) and is by far more technically skilled than the franchise kids cut place. After reading the great reviews for this place, I decided to make an appointment....and gotta say, the awesome reviews are warranted. I made an appointment with Chris and he did a great job with my haircut. He took his time to make sure we were on the same page with my haircut and I gotta admit....I look good!..LOL. Chris really made me feel comfortable and was very easy to talk to. I get bored with the same hairstyle after awhile and want a barber that is willing to give me ideas on new, trendy, or different styles. They're the experts so I completely trust them. My previous barber did just that...every so often he would just say, we're gonna try something different and I'd let him do it... and it always came out great. Unfortunately, he wound up moving to the Mainland so I needed to find a new barber... I'm really glad to have found this great shop. I was so impressed with Chris' skill that I brought a friend to get a haircut from him the following day. My friend and I now have a new barber that we can trust. After my haircut, I immediately scheduled my next appointment. Parking is not a problem as there's a dedicated lot around the corner. Make an appointment if you're on a tight schedule, just to make sure you don't have to wait. If you're looking for a new barber, you gotta try this place out. So I came here for the first time yesterday evening, and the atmosphere was quite pleasant. Both owners greeted me and took me in as a walk-in. They asked me what I wanted, and they gave me what I asked for. That's about it...kinda wish they talked story with me like all the other reviewers stated on here. I have been coming here for several years, now. Recently, the prices for woman's haircuts jumped from $18 to $25. I was definitely not digging the new price for a simple cut and considering Supercuts or fantastic sams charged less, I was seriously considering calling it quits. But the months rolled by and my thin splitted ended hair grew longer and longer. I watched my friends get their cheap hair cuts at supercuts and cringed at the lack of detail their precious hairs received. So, I considered these options: $19 + tip haircut at megachains via Supercuts/Fantastic Sams. You gamble on who you get. $40-$80 + tip haircuts from amazing salons with results that would have you coming back in 8 weeks time, anyway. $25 + a $5-$7 tip haircuts from Shirley or Chris who take roughly an hour to do a girl's hair. It's not Hollywood-amazing but the layered hair style they deal with is noticeable, simple, and have you pretty satisfied until your next due date. I won't lie, I haven't seen much styling variation from Shirley or Chris but I appreciate the time and efforts they put in to work tour hair. If you're looking for a specific and sophisticated style I suggest dishing out some cash at K's Hair. But if you're not as picky but don't want to end up with a tasteless haircut at the hands of inexperienced or inattentive stylists, come here. I am a fan because Island style Cuts.... 1. Has great parking lot. Situated at kamaaina acupuncture there's rarely a full lot. If they are full... No harm done, just park at Safeway and walk a minute across the street. 2. The place is so inviting. You step in: it's air conditioned, the styling utensils are being sanitized, everything is warm in colors, hardwood floors, charming guppy vases, and you just don't feel uncomfortable. There's so much simplicity yet personality in this cozy storefront. 3. They really care: Shirley and Chris, anyway. They take the time and if you talk to them during you haircut they make you feel at ease. I love having Shirley. Spending about an hour on your hair makes you feel pretty special. That's why I came to the conclusion their price hike is actually fair. -My tips? Be specific on what you want and never be vague. They are not mind readers. -Always tip in cash. I generally give $7. But a good minimum amount would be $5 and up. They do take credit and debit. -Take a look at their hair products. Some of them are worth buying and they're usually at a reasonable price. -Don't be the last appointment of the day. Generally if your stylist doesn't feel rushed they will take more time with you. This is just my opinion/experience. -Call! They do walk ins but because they are so popular there's hardly any room. Have a happy hair day! read more

I live in NYC but grew up in Hawaii and needed a haircut while visiting my family. I didn't want to chance it with my dad's barber, so I looked up some recommendations on Yelp and came across Island Style Cuts. I called this morning and was able to get an appointment with Shirley at 11:00am... when I arrived about 15 minutes early, she took me right away and gave me a great haircut! Price was great ($16) and it was nice to talk story with her too. I would definitely recommend this place and will return whenever I am back in town! has to be one of the worst barbershops i ever been to. first off i walk in there, and i geel no warm welcome, no conversation into making me feel comfortable, had to ask to get my line up in the front she didnt even line up my sideburns. i never went to any barbershop that dont automatically line up. oh she didnt even know whats a taper fade, and i know this is my fault for not really checking but i just wanted to dip out already. but my fade was un even left side was higher then my right. i am never going back back to get another haircut from this place!!!! read more

It was like a wave of feathers caressing each strand of hair on my head. The graceful clip here, the playful noise of the buzz there. If this was Ancient Greece, this would be the place even the almighty Zeus would get his beard trimmed. Ok, it wasn't like THAT, but I have to say that this was one of the most gentle haircuts I've ever received. Round of applause for Shirley. Unless most places (especially the chains), they always tug too much on the ear, or jerk your head around if it's too low or high, etc. I've even had a few haircuts where they've nicked my hear and then gave me some tissue saying unapologetically, "Sorry 'bout that." Point is, I didn't even wince. Going to the haircutters is a necessity, and for some a chore, but it MUST be done. With the "big-box" franchises you feel like a number all the time no matter who serves you. But with Chris and Shirley, they always treat you like ohana (family), and it definitely feels that way EVERY time you come in. They really care about what kind of style you want and will listen to you. The worst haircut Ive ever received. I would rather lick the floors of a public bathroom than come back to get my hair butchered by a bunch of clowns posing as barbers who suck at cutting hair. How you keep your shop open is truly marvelous. I would gladly kill myself after a haircut from this shop, but I would have to wait 6 months for my hair to grow out because Id be too embarrassed to dress my dead corpse looking like Gary Busey's aborted fetus. DISCLAIMER: Non-satirical review. I've been coming here for over a decade, and not just because it's nearby. In high school when I was going through my grungy punk rock phase (which, to be honest, never quite ended...I just grew up and toned it down), I got my hair dyed red here and they put quite a lot of time and effort on it yet charged me their standard rate even though my hair needed to be bleached beforehand. They also made home visits for my grandparents when they were infirm and couldn't make the trip to the salon itself. It's that kind of treatment that makes this place special. What else makes Island Style Cuts special to me is Shirley. She knows my stubborn, bulky hapa-Japanese hair better than anyone and spends a lot of time layering it and making it sit just right. All I have to do is shampoo it, run a brush through and part it, and let it dry and it sits perfectly all day. It's like magic. I uploaded a photo of myself on my profile specifically for reference for this review. I haven't had another stylist be able to do it nearly as well (some don't even try to thin it out properly like this, claiming that I "have 'Hapa Hair' and it just won't behave that way"), yet for her it appears effortless at just under a half hour. And I wear my hair long. I usually don't come in until it's down to my shoulders and will have it cut about nose-length as it grows very fast, yet she still charges me the male price even though it's more akin to cutting female hair. Both rates are very good for the work she does (at the time of this review, it's $18 for men and $25 for women), and she even throws in a shampoo beforehand if I haven't had time to wash my hair prior to coming in. The decor, though completely unimportant to me in a salon, must be acknowledged. The place has changed quite a bit over the years, but it's always had a great sense of style and Feng Shui. As of my most recent visit, there's a new layout with freshly painted walls and new furnishings and artwork. It's really impressive for a local mom & pop business, which made it all the more annoying that when the new Hawaii Five-O filmed here they brought in a bunch of kitschy "Hawaiian" stuff to dress the place up. Why even bother shooting on location in Hawaii when they can just create a set like that in L.A.? Island Style Cuts is a staple of Honolulu. The space next to it has had a dozen places go out of business, sometimes within weeks (nearly all of them restaurants...seriously, what is it with restaurants on Kapahulu? It's as if the food industry on this avenue was cursed by a native Hawaiian resident a hundred years ago whose home was uprooted and family died as a result all so a rich entrepreneurial settler could open a cafe that only served white people), but this place remains standing, and for very good reason. I hope it continues serving the community for more decades to come, and when I am in Honolulu, I will continue to patronize it. read more

Great place to get a haircut! Chris cut my hair and did a GREAT job. He took his time and didn't rush. All he needed was an idea of how I wanted my hair cut, and he was able to do it all by free-hand. I would recommend making a reservation, as it can get busy. Unbelievable price ($18 women cut/$15 cut child) for a darn good haircut. I came was looking for a place that could handle a cut for a toddler/child as well as an adult. Thanks to some other great Yelp reviews, I made an appointment. The unassuming shop is on Kapahulu and there's a parking lot in the back, past Waiola Shave Ice. My wash and cut was completed in 40 minutes. Style looks great and she was open to adjustments if I wanted it shorter or anything after she had cut and styled. I liked it as is. I was also impressed how well she handled a slightly grumpy 3 1/2 year old girl who had just gotten up from a nap. There was no wimpering as KK's curly hair was brushed out and the haircut was done quickly. The stylist/owner even had time to give my sister tips on how to trip the split ends if CB decides to cut KK's hair at home. I'd seriously come back here the next time I visit Hawaii. read more
