The place must be famous for being that old, because it is not for its dogs. Also offers affordable breakfasts and sandwiches after 11 AM. People are nice and friendly, lots of seating inside. I went in to order and the lady was looking at me like I was doing something wrong. I was going to get a burger, a dog and fries. The grill was shut down so no burger. Decided to get 2 dogs instead and when I got the total I realized they only accept cash and the ATM costs $3.50. I was in the mood for a burger anyways so I decided to get dinner somewhere else. Here we have one of those old ways restaurants that has managed to stay open through world wars and civil unrest while maintaining the same hot dog your Grand Pa ate. The hot dogs are good. They have some good snack foods. My only issue is the employees are constanly going outside smoking cigarettes and come back in without washing their hands. The veteran Elliot's customer is easy to spot because the first thing that comes out of their mouth is "All Around" or "Works, Extra Heavy". What these two dogs have in common, and what makes it a true Elliot's Famous Hot Dog, is a unique blend of sweet relish and tangy mustard over a snappy Kayem dog made of pork, beef, and spices served up on a grilled New England bun. (All Around has onions, Works doesn't.) I'm normally not a huge fan of mustard and relish, but with so many people asking for just that, I had to try this special blend and was surprised to find my tastebuds craving the next bite, which is saying a lot for a hot dog! The chili dog was a unique set of flavors as well, served with a slice of white (American?) cheese and a chili that boasted whole beans spilling out of the bun. The cajun fries would be better classified as seasoned fries, but still thick and tasty after being served fresh from the frier. Onion rings, burgers, steak sandwiches and even some homemade sweets were available on the menu, but you could tell that most people were there for the one-of-a-kind hot dogs. The decor is vintage luncheonette with ceramic tiled walls, fixed wooden stool seats, and formica green tables. While most people just stopped in to order from the counter and took their meal to go faster than most people get through a drive-thru, I could just imagine the room full of kids after a baseball or soccer game chowing down on the $1.50 hot dogs. Who doesn't like a great Hot Dog! I've been an Elliot's customer my entire life. I've also passed it onto my son who absolutely loves it. Elliot's is located in downtown Lowell, Mass. They have several options as far as toppings and you can't go wrong with any of them. Last week my son order a 6 pack with ketchup and it came with 2 sides of fries. He's an athlete so he was looking for a good amount of food. He absolutely destroyed the 6 pack. Elliot's is a great spot for quick eats. Don't be afraid of the chili dog. Outstanding read more

I have trying to get to Elliot's for years. Glad I finally made it. I tried 3 dogs, hot dog all around, trailer dog all around, and a chili cheese dog. The was no noticeable flavor difference between the deep fried trailer dog and the regular hot dog. They put a lot of onion in bottom of bun, which I like. The chili cheese dog was amazing. Slice of American in bottom of bun melts to perfection. Chili was tasty. Would order two chili cheese dogs next time. Can't wait to go back. read more

I think this place is a local institution -- the hot dogs hit the spot, and Elliot's has been around forever. It's in a really historic part of downtown Lowell, and makes a good stop if you are in the area checking other things out. It was good back then and it is good today. Love the fact that you have the choice of steamed or fried as a homage to their former local competitor. They put the perfect amount of salt on the fries as well. Good service with a smile goes a long way and the crew here are always friendly in that uniquely Lowell way. 1/3 the stars for 1/3 the effort. I ordered a 6 pack, ketchup mustard and relish on all. I know this happened because the woman that took the order said it back to me. I don't know what happened between then and 4 feet away when the order got to the dopey girl working the grill but all I got was relish. I watched this girl burn her hand at least 3 times on the grill which just amazed me. It was like a caveman's first time seeing fire, she just kept touching the hot part of the grill press. Clearly she has trouble paying attention so my first tip would be to tell this girl to lose the ear buds while she's working, and if that doesn't work out send her off to McDonalds where fucking up orders is normal. read more

First and last time going here. Walked in excited to try the food that has been served to Lowell for over 96 years however upon walking in with my partner, we received a very cold welcome and the beastly woman that was standing at the front counter informed us that the grill was off and they were only serving hot dogs. No burgers or steak. My partner was there for a hotdog but I was there for a steak and cheese! So I took a second to look at the options and while glancing over the menu the same woman muttered under her breath to her co-worker "it's 6:30..." inferring that my partner and I are naive to arrive looking for food so close to their closing time of 7:00 pm. I've worked many food service jobs and never once have I denied a customer anything 30 minutes before closing. In fact I'm more inclined to give them extra, for free! I was immediately off put by this woman's attitude and how she greeted us I only wish I had gotten her name. It's disconcerting that a renowned place around the city employs someone so ugly on the inside :( I was looking forward to trying Elliots Famous Hot Dogs but alas, i guess it wasn't meant to be. I had high hopes for this place. I was a loyal Lawton hotdog guy as was my family for 3 generations. I have missed a great hotdogs, and the website and pics online looked promising. My buddy was a regular and we met there. Nice people. Genuinely nice. I got 3 trailer dogs with mustard and onion. Lawton dogs were deepfried till they split then grilled with slightly spicy mustard. Oh the chocolate milk. More in the next section. Atmosphere Okay, so Elliot's isn't located in the nicest part of Lowell. On one side is a transitional living center (people with financial difficulties), and on the other side is Appleton Street (enough said for Lowell residents). Between those two locations, Elliot's doesn't really invest too much into their appearance. It's all about get fed for a cheap price, and get out - type of thing. Staff During my thirty minute stay here, I've seen the staff wrestle with hagglers, dine and dashers, and all around sketchy people. They are nice however, to people who do pay and are polite. This one guy sitting on the side who was hassling the cashier over some change actually got up and stole my chocolate milk from the order (while it was being made). My friend and I were appalled, but we waited to see what was going to happen next. Was she going to question where it went? Was she going to flip out? Was she going to kick those guys out? Nope. She just death glared that chocolate milk as she got me another one. Was driving up to Portland, Maine with my boyfriend from Boston. We hit some seriously horrible traffic (our fault for leaving at a bad time) and I was intensely grumpy and craving a hot dog. He didn't want me to eat a gas station hot dog cause he said I might die. Pretty dumb but gas station hot dogs are the best. We stopped in here and I got a quick mustard and kraut dog as a snack since we already had dinner reservations. I was legit a starving grumpy monster. Great place to grab a decently priced meal in the area! Mostly everything on the menu is frozen and precooked or left heated to expedite ordering. As far as hot dogs and cheap lunches go, there's nothing better in the area. Good options for combos for feeding multiple people affordably. But honestly, there's nothing special done here that you cannot do for about half the price on your stove in 5 minutes. Frozen burgers, grilled nathans hot dogs on a flat top, and buttered buns are not hard to recreate. Convenient and fast. Drinks are a downside as they offer cans or a soda tap behind the counter (got dirty looks for asking for a refill). Also, for some reason, they are skimpy with the napkins. Was like pulling teeth to get a couple more after finishing the meal. Will definately come back but the parking and meters makes it a tough place to stop conveniently. read more
