I was downtown at the hospital today for labs. I had a small break in between my appointments so I seized the opportunity to go grab some breakfast. I have been to quite a few joints downtown already. I wasn't dressed the best so heading to Bacon or Tupelo Honey for breakfast would have been a little embarrassing. And I didn't want to deal with parking so after doing a little research, Elmer's was my spot to grab some food. Driving up to the restaurant, there were quite a few cars in the parking lot. What have I been missing out on? This place was poppin! I know Elmer's has been around for a hot minute and as long as I have lived here, I have never been. Seeing that the parking lot was pretty full, I took it as a good sign about my choice of coming here. I was sat at a small table by the fireplace. It's a pretty cozy venue. Bright from all the windows. The fireplace was going so it was nice and toasty. It was a very chill setting. Mariah got some coffee started for me while I was breezing over the menu. They have a little of everything for breakfast and some lunch options. I ordered the Hungry Rancher for breakfast. I should have known that my eyes were bigger than my stomach cause it was a lot of food! You get 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, 2 slices of ham, 2 sausage links, hashbrowns and fruit. I also got a side of country gravy and pancake syrup. Gotta have pancake syrup for the sausage links! My eggs were fried hard and were perfect. The sausage links had a nice browning on them which I love. It was paired nicely with the pancake syrup. I ate a couple bites of my hashbrowns with the gravy. The top of the hashbrowns were crispy and golden but the middle part of the hashbrowns were still undercooked. You get a great portion of the hashbrowns which is fantastic but when it's that thick of a portion, the middle of it ends up not cooking all the way through. I ended up taking my ham and bacon home with me. I didn't have enough room to finish my huge plate! The one thing I noticed about this joint were all the older folks here. It was nice seeing them out, socializing, playing card games after their meal and enjoying life. This must be the go to spot for senior citizens. I did feel out of place amongst these fabulous folks but honestly it was fun. They are so chill. No drama. No loud conversations. Everyone was just having a relaxing and fun time. I can hang with these folks any day! It was a fun experience today at Elmer's. The food was hefty and good. The crowd is chill and fun to be around. The venue is comfortable and relaxing. I'm happy I got to grab a meal here in between my appointments. I got to enjoy my meal and wasn't rushed. Mariah did a great job taking care of me. I don't know when I'll be in the area again but I'll be hitting up Elmer's if I am, especially for breakfast. read more

Always wanted to go to this place. Have lived in Boise for many years. Finally went. Major letdown. The waffle was almost $12!!! THAT MUCH FOR A WAFFLE!!! with JUST BUTTER!!!! absolute...INSANITY!!!! I will never go here again. These diners are supposed to be affordable. How does a family eat here? Ok so yes, it's located on Capitol, super close to BSU and basically is downtown....so they will always get the business. But DAMN!! $12 for a waffle!! ONE. WAFFLE!!! just...one! This place is obviously NOT for the locals. It's for the parents of BSU students. They basically know that they can hella over charge and somehow get away with it. Just crazy. Again...it's like a diner. So there is absolutely NO need to be charging what they do. Waitress was very nice tho. Ill give her/this place that much, but yeah...for a restaurant I was excited to try after so many years bc I love old school places like this...I can 100% say...I will never go here again. I used to go to this location years ago with my mother and grandparents after church for breakfast. My sister and I were back visiting Boise and decided to meet family there for sentimental reasons. The food and service was fantastic. It was even better than I remembered in times past. My friend and I ate brunch at Elmer's this week. The owner greeted and welcomed us as we walked in and we were seated promptly. Our server was very sweet and efficient as well. I had an omelette with hash browns and a biscuit. The menu said that the biscuits were from Pillsbury and I assume they were frozen, but mine was really good as were the omelette and hash browns and coffee. The coolest thing was that they had a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers on the counter in the ladies restroom; they were just gorgeous! We told the owner how pretty they were as we were leaving (while he was sweeping the rug) and he said he cut them himself that morning! That was such an unexpected and pleasant surprise! What are the great things about getting to see family is they always do the best breakfast spots luckily one of my uncles took me to Elmers and we got lucky and got really good parking but that wasn't enough. I had to have what I thought would be the French toast sandwich but instead I got an omelette with pancakes. The service was incredible. Today while moving in our youngest to her new place to attend Boise state we walked over here for a late breakfast/lunch...I hadn't eaten at an Elmers for over 20+ yrs since we left the state of Washington. But when we used to live in Washington we had one blocks from our place and have fond memories as a young family eating here. Walking into this location it brought us back in time. A little outdated but super clean inside and the host at the front was super welcoming and friendly. Upon being seated our host brought over some waters and took our drink order. Heads up they do have adult beverages for brunch as well like champagne, wine and beer selection. After a very short wait our waiter Jeffery came to assist us. This to me was the game changer he was super friendly, attentive, informative and made this whole experience one that I would come back for. For food I had the crabacado omelette which consisted of lots of fresh Dungeness crab, bacon, sliced avocado and metered cheese. This omelette was very delicious and filling. I haven't had this good of a crab omelette since being in the Northwest. The crab was so fresh tasting and if you haven't ever had bacon and avocado with this flavor profile you have missed out. My daughter had the chocolate chip pancakes with eggs and bacon on the side. These pancakes could've fed a family of 5 they were so big, but so delicious with great fluffy taste. My daughters BF had the farmers breakfast which was 3 eggs with sliced ham, bacon, sausage links, hash browns and homemade biscuit. We loved everything and glad we stumbled across this place. I hope that more locals and visitors give this Boise staple a try. It's hard to find great food like this and the portion size vs the price. I really enjoyed our visit and food. Before I even went inside, I had a pretty good idea of what Elmer's was all about. Once I went in, I confirmed my expectations. The place is decorated like my grandma's house-wallpaper that features fruit and tacky pictures on the wall that have probably been hanging there since the early 1990's. It's a charm that fits this diner. Although it was busy, service was friendly. Our server was slammed and stopped by a few times to tell us she was dropping off an order and then would be right with us. She said that three times before she finally took our order. I felt bad for her-she was working hard and trying to keep up with all of her tables. When the food came out, it was fresh and hot. I had the biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns, eggs and bacon. The flavor was ok, but not amazing. I felt like everything was just mediocre. Maybe I had expectations that were a little too high. But overall, it was just ok. I'd probably find some place else to try for a really good breakfast. read more

This was horrible. Cold food, small portions that you can tell come pre-packaged. Four dollars for a child size soda. Four dollars for one cup of coffee. Ten dollars for a tiny piece of shoe leather (ham) and a side of cold hashbrowns. We ordered "STRAWBERRY" pancakes and were charged for them but also charged an extra fee for the strawberries. Elmer's, I remember when I was 16 working at Elmer's. Things have definitely changed since... My daughter is disabled and she always orders from the kids menu she wanted the silver chocolate pancakes, and the server said, "How old is she? Because that's only for kids and corporate is really strict on this like we can't do half orders we can't do this or that" I was okay fine give me the waffle. So my daughter got the waffle only eat half of her waffle, which is the reason why we get meals from the kids' menu, but it's okay. I had the German pancake, something about having tart with sweet its the best and it was good and two potato pancakes you have the meat the chives sour cream . My nephew ordered French toast and my sister the country breakfast and my other nephew he had chicken strips, not much of a breakfast kid. Great service and food at a legendary restaurant in Boise. I was impressed with the hearty breakfast especially delicious hash browns and eggs at a very fair price and with reasonable opening hours. The food was good, definitely a diner, but the main reason for stopping was because of German Pancakes. It was really good! It was a bit thicker at the bottom, but still light and filling. Elmer's Restaurant is a long standing tradition in the northwest. They have been around for over fifty years and continue to feed both the residents of the northwest and hungry travelers much like myself. I guess that the restaurant started out in Portland, Oregon by Walt and Dorothy Elmer and was initially known for Walt's buttermilk pancakes and started franchising in 1966. Since I prefer a savory breakfast over a sweet breakfast, I opted for a Denver omelet with Tillamook cheddar cheese. As I have said, I am not too into sweet breakfasts, but my client had a German pancake and it looked pretty impressive. I had never even heard of a German pancake,much less seen one. It looked good. My Denver omelet was good and a great way to start the day. Elmer's uses a lot of products from the northwest, so you do get a true taste of the northwest. I would definitely recommend this establishment for a breakfast spot. I give it an overall four () stars and suggest you check it out. read more
