Solid place to get a good breakfast but definitely not my favorite. They have a large menu so there is something for everyone but nothing about the meal was spectacular. I had the crab Benedict and the crab was very dry and it seemed like that burned it on the grill before bringing it out. All together, not s lot of flavor. In a world that constantly has new inventive approaches to breakfast and brunch, sometimes you crave something a little more traditional and old fashioned, Elmer's satiates that craving. Even the interior feels like you've been taken back a few decades to when time was simpler. I was part of a group of 6, we walked in, and we were set at our table withing 5 minutes, which is pretty rare around town on a Sunday morning. Our group had everything from the potato cake, omelettes, biscuits and gravy, and scramblers. All were delicious and tasty. It is also cool that they offer Ivar's clam chowder, which is somewhat expected from a Washington/Oregon based franchise restaurant. My personal favorite item and recommendation would be to try the potato cake, at least once, it is very full of flavor, and definitely will cure any unpleasant feelings from a fun night before. Overall, this is a tasty spot for a more traditional breakfast, no it is not fully local, but at least it is a franchise from the northwest. Other people in our party tried various items on the menu and everyone was happy with their selections. The servers were very friendly and attentive too. My partner and I have made this charming place our Sunday morning custom. It's a great mix of old school diner style decor and feel but quite a large and delicious menu. I typically order the eggs Benedict and it is just as good if not superior to some of our other downtown brunch favorites. He loves the French Toast and just yesterday we decided to try the mimosas with breakfast. We had an amazing time, warm and cozy by the fireplace while the resteraunt filled with all different ages and types of people. It truly is one of those throwback places that are rare but extremely popular. I know we will be coming back week after week for our Sunday Morning meal. Elmer's will ALWAYS have a place in my heart. This is one of the few places still open that I ate at as a child after moving here in the early 80's. Unfortunately, the original location we frequented on Fairview has closed, leaving this place all by its lonesome. However, it's a Boise breakfast classic along the lines of the now-defunct Raedean's (sniff). Long time Boiseans know what I'm talking about. There's just that charm to this place. Most of what needs to be said has already been said in the reviews, so I won't repeat it all. In my dozens of times eating here, I can only remember a time or two that I ordered something other than breakfast. I can't recall ever being totally disappointed. The food has always been solid and the employees always friendly. It's nice to sit near the fireplace in the winter. Maybe the decor is a little out of date, but it just wouldn't be right here. Not a bad place for breakfast, but, it's definitely not going to be my first choice in Boise. The German pancakes were pretty different, almost as thin as a crepe, but the crepes were as thick as usual pancakes. Four person party had 3 home runs & one miss. Overall a good breakfast with generous portion size. 4 blueberry pancakes were a huge portion and good enough flavor. Texture was tender without being soggy. Fresh berries on plate were a nice touch. One demerit for serving with maple syrup instead of blueberry syrup. The maple flavoring was just distracting & didn't reinforce the blueberry flavor. Biscuit & gravy breakfast got praise from recipient. Looked like a plenty generous portion, being enough to share. Waffle disappeared quickly with attention from seven year old. He didn't say if it was good or bad, he was too busy polishing it off of his plate. Single miss was on avacado eggs benedict. Eggs were insufficiently poached & whites were still runny. Waitress & manager very quickly got kitchen working on second dish of properly cooked eggs and comp'ed that meal from the check. 5 stars for customer service on that issue. Historic restaurant for great dining! I am an Idahoan but have been in California the past 40+ years. Was visiting family in Boise area and we went to Elmer's for a delightful breakfast last Sunday (3/11/18). Was delighted to find that this is a favorite family dining spot and many of my family's memories are within. The menu has everything (and then some) for anyone's palette. I had a hard time deciding what I really wanted to eat but wasn't disappointed. My biscuit was light, large and fluffy so I ordered extra gravy. Good solid home cooking. So entered Elmer's with high expectations! The atmosphere was what I expected on a Saturday f o r brunch. Pleasant enough. Jason was our server and he was efficient. ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast and a short stake. The pancakes were on the small side and only warm, but not warm enough to melt the butter that was on them. Their flavor was nice only needed to be hotter or softer butter to spread onto warm cakes. The CFS was only ok, flavor was good, temp was good. It just didn't hit me like I expected . Elmer's did all that I asked, and there lies the probkem, I didn't ask. Shame on customers that complain but don't say something so their complain might be fixed on the spot. I would come again, with down to earth expectations. read more

Have you ever walked into an establishment and feel you just entered an episode of the ol' 60's Twilight Zone? It happened here at Elmers. With the hustle & bustle, the noise & congestion of Capitol Blvd's partial street closures, drivers with long faces honking away, officers with whistles directed traffic on the main thoroughfare. Walking in through the doors all changed in an instant. A nice calming noise suppression from the outside world happened when the doors closed behind us. Once inside, it was a down-home country cottage feel. The smile of the hostess was genuine & happy to see us. Background white noise was that of silverware klinking against stoneware & diners humming as they noshed. She showed us to the one open booth by the windows & introduced us to our server, Katie, who was already setting glasses of ice water down on our table. Katie smiled, and though her station looked busy, she made friendly small talk & gave us a moment to decide. When both our menus where on the table, she was there in an instant ready take our order. Unusual as I witnessed that she was hustling in her section. I'm already impressed with her attentiveness. We ordered & she committed everything to memory. For the wife: Bacon burger w/Tillamook Ched sat on a grilled Kaiser bun & came with bottomless fries! She likes her burgers "medium" & she had the "Cheshire cat" grin that signaled that it was cooked to perfection. We shared her fries as we knew we'd get s'more! They're good...but then I'm reminded, "...we ARE in IDAHO!" It bein' Saturday mid-morning & nursing the effects from a night out on the town, I went with the Saturday Market Skillet. A hefty meal of Hickory smoked ham, smoked bacon, German sausage, hash browns, red & green peppers, onions topped off with fluffy Tillamook Ched-scrambled eggs; served on a small cast-iron skillet. There on the side sat a fresh-baked buttermilk biscuit to die for. I love that my dish isn't overly seasoned as I like to add the salt n' pep myself and the bacon/ham added just enough saltiness that didn't warrant any. But I like pepper. A pinch here, a pinch there, over the perfectly cooked eggs & the crispy outer bits of the hash, this dish was solid & guaranteed to knock last night's cobwebs outcha head! My wife's fries were dwindling & somehow I locked eyes with Katie from a distance & she seemed to know what I was thinking as she mouthed the words "...more fries?" I couldn't help but grin & nod. Only in the Twilight Zone... Kuddo's to the staff @ Elmer's for the awesome hospitality we'd received while in BoDo. Stepping back into the outside world, it was a return to the hustle, bustle & long faces. Night & day I tell'ya. It was 3.5-Star food, but a 5-Star experience throughout. I go to Elmer's at least a few times every week. My favorite dish is the potato cakes with sour cream and bacon. They normally come with eggs, but I always ask for a side salad instead, and they always try to make you happy by accommodating special requests. They also have great onion rings. I think they are homemade, because they are better than any I've had anywhere else. The service is normally really good here. There are three reasons why I didn't give them 5 stars: while the breakfast menu is great, the lunch and dinner menus feel a bit limited; it's always too hot in the main dining area, because they run the gas fireplace even when it's 75 degrees outside (I think the elderly people request it); and finally, this place just seems like the type of place that should have a nice selection of pies, but they don't. They offer one type of pie every season, and sometimes their pie of the season isn't even pie. Right now, it's cheesecake. In sum, this is one of my favorite places in Boise, but there is room for improvement. read more

Walked from my hotel to Elmer's for late breakfast. Warm and inviting like going to a relative's house. Even a fireplace at one end. Service was spot on, and coffee arrived in seconds. I had the potato pancakes and eggs over medium, comes with bacon. Everything was cooked well and delicious. The bacon and eggs were exceptional. The coffee was just okay, which I expected at a family style place. And the potato pancakes tasted good, but could have been cooked just a bit longer as they were just a little mushy in the center. It had been microwaved and was practically tasteless. The veggies were limp and way over seasoned with pepper. The "rice pilaf" had been microwaved so long that it stuck together in large chewy clumps. My wife's mashed potatoes were cold, lumpy and tasteless. The gravy was cold. Very disappointing. This was at 6:00 pm on a Friday. After this review was posted, I was contacted by the Elmer's PR people and the Manager of this restaurant. The Manager ,Candi Minburg, was very apologetic and went the extra mile in trying to make things right. She sent us a very nice apology card, and an open value certificate for two free meals at Elmer's. I actually was pleasantly ALL the way surprised by Elmer's. I really enjoyed my breakfast. I had the country biscuit hash (I've forgotten the name but that should help) it was super delicious. My BF had the crab Benedict and was very satisfied. It even just looked and smelled so good. My only complaint which doesn't take away from food or service was that it was pretty cold in the restaurant. I know it's AC season in June but I wish I brought a sweater. I tried eating so fast so I could get outside again to warm up. We went around 2:30pm on a Sunday so it was perfect and not too busy. I'm definitely going back to try more things on menu! read more

I love the Capitol location. I've been coming to this place regularly since last fall, and have always had a nice experience. The service is always on point and breakfast is always filling and delicious! I'm a huge fan of their hashbrowns and pancakes. The bacon is also good. And when I ask for my eggs overeasy, they are!
