He extracted both of my bottom front teeth and installed an implant w/cantilever to replace them. Because they were front teeth, there was a need to have a bone graft (as apparently the front teeth do not have as much bone and space to have a lot to attach the implant). No one wants to go thru such a thing, but if I had to do it again, I would again use Dr. Bradley DeGroot. Details: * he provided the options available to me * he explained things very well--and I typically have lots of questions--particularly in regard to options, but also for long-term viability of choices being compared * the office staff was very friendly and efficient--felt like a nice extension of Dr. DeGroot's capabilities * executed the surgery very well...because I had to have both bottom front teeth extracted/replaced, there was a need to do a bone graft to provide a better landing zone for the implant. As is apparently typical for front teeth, there was only room for one implant, so a cantilever was used for the other one. I had sought opinion of another periodontist/implant specialist for this procedure, and they seemed to know what they were doing, but I didn't get the same level of comfort that I did when I spoke with Dr. DeGroot. The first doctor spoke more like a surgeon, but Dr. DeGroot spoke more like a person solving your problems. He explained things very well and he is VERY thorough--my dentist (who is also quite good) indicated so, too. Dr. DeGroot's exam was more thorough than the first periodontist/implant specialist I sought. Not going to mention name of first doctor, because I'm sure the other doctor is fine and not looking to taint anyone here, but I just felt more comfortable with Dr. DeGroot. * he and his team were incredibly flexible and understanding. When I shared my extreme aversion to needles (and I needed three shots to numb the area for the bone graft and implants), I asked for LOTS of numbing agent before they put the needle injections into my gums - three needle shots were coming!!! - and once the assistant put enough numbing agent, and Dr. DeGroot apparently deftly placed the needle injections, I literally didn't feel ANYthing when he gave me those three injections! Yowza, that was nice! And once the injections were done (with novocaine, I suppose), I didn't feel anything during the surgery for extraction, bone grafting, and implantation. I was quite pleased--except for having lost two of my front teeth, of course. :-) * wore retainer to cover the two missing teeth for about 4 months, while the bone graft healed...no issues, but as I was counseled by his team, it was best to remove for eating. * had no issues with after-surgery care, as I simply followed the instructions on the rinse care and what I should/shouldn't eat. * saw Dr. DeGroot for temporary crown/cantilever, which is apparently standard for front teeth, due to their more aesthetically noticeable location--this procedure went well, too...it was nowhere near as difficult as the main extraction/implantation surgery, as the "worst of it" was done at this point. * I then saw my general dentist for performing the permanent crown/cantilever. * it has been 8 months since the implant was done, and no issues. I have had the permanent crown/cantilever for 2 months, and have had no issues. All seems great, with no limitations on my lifestyle! I can floss around the implant, and I even floss around under the cantilever, as there is a natural (very small) space under it--not noticeable to others, but it inherently is not going to go immediately contiguous to the gum line. I will consider a water-pick for flossing, but thus far have had no reason to consider it. Conclusion: Overall, a very good experience, considering the not-so-pleasant need for having two front teeth extracted and replaced. I would use Dr. DeGroot again, if I had any further need for periodontal issues, and I would recommend him to anyone who had the misfortune of having to have implants done.

I'm leaving his office extremely stressed about when I will have this fixed as I work 10-12 hour shifts and am looking at 6 days a week the next couple of weeks. Keep it surface. The gals at the desk are great with understanding "I'm in a hurry" or "I can be chatty and tell stories ". They read social cues well and I appreciate that. You feel heard. And always floss more. You can never floss enough.

I hate dentists. I have hated them since I was seventeen (I am forty-five now). At seventeen, I…read moreneeded a root canal and the dentist and endodontist that I saw, did not know that my upper jaw does not stay numb and even with fourteen shots of novacaine, they proceeded with doing a root canal on one of my upper molars. I felt everything. I was traumatised. It took another seventeen years for me to step foot back in a dentists office, and that was to have yet another root canal done. The dentist had to give me IV sedation to do the procedure. The oral surgeon had to do the same to remove my wisdom teeth. Every visit was traumatic. I went only when I was forced to and I paid dearly for it, not only mentally but also physically and financially. (I wont even get into the trauma that my son faced from an early age as well.) Fast forward ten years and I decided it was time to leave Addison Dental because they were ripping me off financially. I began a search for someone new. I asked people for referrals. I talked to my family, I searched online... No one really had great things to say like they do with their doctors. I never felt comfortable with the answers I was receiving. And then there was the dreaded insurance issue..... the worst chokehold on any dental decision we ever need to make. I did a local google search and found Dr Sullivan. I skimmed thru his website and moved on. He looked good but websites can be deceiving in my experience. I looked at a number of other locals and then at a new "chain" type practice that opened near my chiropractor. I decided nothing looked any better, but something specific kept drawing me back to Dr Sullivan. He had a section on his website about what he does on his Fridays, how he helps people in need by offering them free dentistry, giving back to his community. He didn't put the information in a prominent spot so that everyone would notice it first thing when his site was visited, but it was there and it stayed with me. I made the appointment. Again, it had become an emergency. He took me in immediately and literally coddled me as if I was one of his own children. He listened to my worries, soothed my fears and made sure that he did everything he could possibly do to help me, to fix me without undue stress. And then he began to assess the damage that all the rest of the dentists had caused over the years and slowly, we have built a trust bond and he has been restoring my faith in him as a dentist and restoring my healthy smile. I have entrusted him with my family and referred my sister to him who needed an emergency root canal done (yep, it's a family affliction lol). I will continue to refer anyone and everyone that I know because not only does Dr Sullivan do damned good work, he has heart and he makes you feel like you are a big part of his family. More than that, his has worked hard to make sure that his staff has the same work ethic and will treat you the same way that he does. I don't give reviews easily, but this one was most deserved. I had put off going for years...I had problem teeth that I'd tried saving with a previous dentist but I got frustrated and stopped going. That was in the mid-, late-90s. Yeah...I waited a looooooong time. So long, in fact, it was time to throw in the towel and have them removed. Enough about my lazy history...on with the awesomeness that is Scharfenberg Dental!!! They were able to get see me quickly. Dr. Jerry listened to my story in which I took full responsibility for my predicament -this wonderful man basically said I was there now and let's take care of the problem. No judgment, just a patient man with a plan. Took care of an immediate problem right away, then scheduled the extractions shortly thereafter. The day of the surgery, I was, of course, freaking out. He had given me a pill to take a couple of hours prior to coming in. Then, it was nitrous & Novocaine. They offered headphones with Pandora, there are bird feeders strung in the trees outside...seriously, the people in this office are concerned with your comfort and well-being on every level. Everything went well...I think I remember about 30 seconds total of the hours-long procedure and honestly? I have ZERO memories of pain or even discomfort. Nothing. Dr. Jerry and the dental tech spoke in calm, soothing voices -I never freaked once. Their caring follow-up calls later that day and after truly made me feel well cared-for. During my treatment, I was handed off to Dr. Carly, who then worked with me to get full dentures. She has been an absolute delight, always cheerful, also 100% non-judgmental about my reason for being there...believe me, that's meant a lot. For the first time in over 20 years, I can now smile. Really smile. When she first put in the plates, I cried. These wonderful people gave me back my smile. Dr. Carly said something funny and as I laughed, my hand immediately covered my mouth, as I've done since the 90s. She held my hand and said, "You don't have to do that anymore." Monumental. It's said that the receptionist is the face of an office. Sharon is the sweetest, most down-home lady you'll ever meet. From her greetings to her conversations to her scheduling you to the best convenience of all, you won't find a nicer, more competent lady anywhere. This already fantastic business is fortunate to have her. Erica & Carol, the dental techs, are not only awesome at their jobs, they are super-awesome girls. They always spoke to me like a friend, not just a patient. They helped keep me calm and feel welcome, all while performing their duties well. To sum it up, run...don't walk...to this office.
