I would rather give zero stars. My family of 6 were sent away after a waitress explained that no one under 18 was allowed in the premises. We had a teenager with us who was performing at 7 Stages that evening so we had decided on Elmyr for dinner due to its proximity and the fact that 2 of us are vegan and one vegetarian. The waitress was curt and rude and not apologetic in anyway. As we left, looked around for any signage we may have missed that validate the under 18 "rule" but I just couldn't find anything stating her claim. Afterwards, as we are next door at Ali Baba's, I checked the Elmyr website and also their page on Yelp and still could not find anything validation the waitress' claim. The perception I now have is that a waitress is now deciding who she serves and who she doesn't serve at Elmyr. It's always been a place where the cooler-than-you-tattooed-pierced-Eastsider's hung out for cheap grub and a pint. I get it. You have a place to call your own. I was there 22 years ago when Alex opened Elmyr. I ate burritos wrapped by Bill Kelliher of Mastodon when he was supplementing income between shows. But now, I won't ever be back. By the way, Ali Baba's next door where we did decide to eat was excellent and didn't smell like a dirty ashtray. read more

What's grungy (the good kind), festooned with luchadore paintings/paraphernalia, and churning out burritos the size of Duraflame logs? Elmyr. Yep, and there isn't a darn thing wrong with that. Came in for a Saturday lunch and we were all ravenous. Chips, guac, and salsa was just the ticket. The guac? I had heard some good things about it, but I think we may have ended up with a pretty basic batch that happened to be made with some over-ripened avocados. Psh, not like it mattered. We did all but lick the bowl clean. It's a gracious amount of guac for what you pay, too. Good stuff. I went with the Green Burrito. The sheer size of the monster was comical and also hilariously exciting for my hunger pangs. I proceeded to pick it up and unwrap the foil only to proceed to put it down again. It was packed so full of veggies and beans that I had to fork-and-knife it. I highly enjoyed the sauteed spinach and the hilarious amount of black beans. I couldn't finish it, but we waved goodbye to hunger. Only downside is that smoking is allowed inside. However, the patio makes for a nice compromise. Well, you walk in and think "do I want to eat/drink here?," the place is small and people pack in and stand around just to get a spot at the bar or a table and people talk about it all the time. Elmyr fits all of the above! And I'm kind of bummed that I have only been here one time now that I am writing my review. I came here before a comedy show at Variety Playhouse - perfect pre-show dinner spot - with some friends. So many choices on the menu and I wanted to try everything. It took a bit for a server to come back and help us (including wiping down the table), but they were pretty busy. I'm sure we are not the only ones who were here before the show. After much debate, I opted for the Grilled Steak Nachos. I love all things Mexican, but nachos really top my list. They are the perfect food if you are really hungry. Once we ordered, the food came out pretty quickly. The nachos were loaded and I was ready to dig into the hearty serving of tortilla chips, melted Monterey Jack cheese (and a ton of it), green leaf lettuce, salsa fresca, red onions, jalapeños, and sour cream. I let my friends each have a taste, but I devoured the rest all by myself. The steak was perfectly cooked to a mid-rare and all that gooey cheese - so rich and delicious. I went through a couple of glasses of unsweet iced tea (which I regretted half way through the show). Over all a great meal and super cheap. Our server was attentive once we got her attention the first time. The back room has 4 or 5 tables and it is more spread out and quieter. Much preferred to the cramped bar area for me. This was a place recommended to us by a local and is located in the art district of Atl close to downtown. Upon entering you realize this is a full smoking facility so if you are against cigarette smoking in restaurants, DO NOT GO HERE! Against my better judgement we ate here anyway. There were not any empty tables so we waited 15 min or so and grabbed a "seat yourself" table. Several employees saw us sit down and did not come clean off the previous customers dirty dishes until they were stopped and asked. Then they only cleaned off part of it and we asked again to have someone clean off the table. After 3 different servers attempted to clean our table the bar tender finally finished cleaning and wiped it off. We put in our drink order and later stopped the waitress to ask to take our appetizer order. She was in such a hurry she had to be stopped 3x to finish the app orders from all the ppl at the table. When we were ready to order we had to grab the waitress again. The service was just completely horrible and the staff was not friendly, borderline rude. They were openly aggravated at customers and the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. The salsa, guac, and queso were very good but chips were store bought, bagged chips. This L5P tradition deserves your attention. Elmyr is the stuff of myth. Legend has it that a love-struck chupacabra cried silver tears upon the spot and that's where the first burrito tree grew. Back then, it cost about three-fifty. But the simple truth of the matter (at least in modern day), is that they make some excellent burritos (and related fare). You won't go home hungry. I had a Green burrito with some steak in it. It totally hit the spot. It was larger than my fist, and I still ate it. Delicious. And the prices are good. Occasional specials will sometimes put a burrito and a beer in your hand for south of $10. What's not to like about that? Speaking of which, the bar will happily serve up whatever deleterious substance you may desire. And this is L5P. Little Five Points (for the uninitiated) is known for its color, its counter-culture, its artistry, and for being the general bohemian melting-pot that it so wonderfully is. Elmyr is part and parcel of the whole L5P experience. This means no pretenses. It means genuine, no-holds-barred discourse, graffiti, and just cool people. Honestly, until I started working later than usual, I've wanted to go to El Myr every night after work and get one of their grilled shrimp burritos. Not to mention their delicious guacamole and salsa. I kind of like the divey atmosphere of the place, I feel as though I don't need to be or look any certain way to have a decent evening in house. And even though it is indeed a bar, I still feel like I can go in and eat my burrito and have a beer (or some whiskey) and get out in a reasonable amount of time. The waitresses have been simultaneously attentive and delightfully impudent in their serving style, which I like. I like it when waitstaff calls out rude customers when they're being ridiculously needy or demanding. And El Myr delivers. This might be the biggest shocker while I was in ATL. My brother told me they had good food but when you walk in there is nothing that even gives you a hint of that. It's dark, smokey, and feels like the ultimate dive bar. The crowd is a bit hipster-ish and the music coming through the speakers is quite interesting but really adds to the mood of the place. I wasn't going to eat but, in the end, I opted for the pad thai burrito. It was so intriguing I couldn't pass. I was super hungry so worst case would be just wasting six bucks on it! For whatever reason, my friends really love this place. Any time I go, it's because someone has been craving their food. I have a few friends who love the Brunswick Burrito in particular. I've tried a few of their specialty burritos, including the Brunswick, Nacho, and Migas. I'd say the Nacho was probably my favorite, due to the nice complement of crunch to other fillings. I can say that I've never craved an Elmyr burrito before, like my friends. I'm the weirdo of the bunch. The food is decently priced ($6-10 for a burrito), of a pretty good quality, and generously portioned. Despite the shit service, it always come out hot, and I generally leave with half a burrito because of how much is crammed in them. The bad service is a known thing here, so definitely come when you have no post-engagements planned. Seriously, there are jokes throughout Atlanta about it. Vanessa T. says it well: "Gritty. Cheap. And bunch of other words we like to use to describe sex, bars, loose women, unsavory men, art, and underground scenes." It's an excellent example of a dive bar, if you're unfamiliar. At least now they've moved a water pitcher into the back, so if you're able to finagle your way around the cramped quarters, you can drink something while you wait an hour or so for your food to come out. Also, be wary if you have larger groups because while it looks like they sometimes split checks, this is not common policy. They have never split the check for us, but it hasn't been a huge issue. It just may surprise someone else if they were unaware. Just make sure you come with a group of chill friends who don't mind getting cash or PayPal for their services rendered as the VIP food buyer. So why 3 stars and not 4? It's just impossible for me to rate a place where I've had to wait forever for ordering food, receiving food, getting drinks, and getting the check, and not just once or twice, but consistently. Often eating out here takes a couple of hours, so, once again, coming here with the right people is key. Service is awful, but I still tip them 20%, so hopefully you do, too. read more

Kind of brings this place down to a three and a half star venue but I have a special place in my heart for cheap eats since they're so hard to find in Atlanta with any real flavor connected to it. But some of the upside of a good hole in the wall will be missed if you do. The margaritas, even the house ones, are quite tasty and potent. Now keep in mind I don't eat beef or pork so it's hard for me to comment on things I haven't eaten. But even at the increased prices...$8.50 for the bbq chicken quesadilla and $8.75 for the shrimp tacos means you usually leave out this place full, satisfied and "leaning". Definitely has remained one of my go-to spots here in Atlanta. I also appreciate the fact that they have their own parking lot in the back which can be dicey here in Little Five Points. read more

Definitely the perfect little dive bar in Five Points complete with very little seating, not a lot of standing room, but an impressive mexican food selection. I love getting to customize each of their burritos and I was happy to be able to grab their pork and add their green chiles. The portions were HUGE, and I eat quite a bit. My burrito was able to be 1 1/2 meals on its own. It came out boiling hot so I was glad to have a cold beer to calm my mouth down. My friend grabbed the veggie quesadillas and the quesadilla was actually so big it was overflowing the edges of the plate, hers was such a generous portion that hers was a full two meals. I snagged a bite of it and was happy, it also came with complimentary sour cream and a plop of guacamole. I would have happily given them five stars but the service was, as others say, just not very good. All of the staff is super nice and happy to talk to you, but we waited about 40 minutes for our food. Too long when there's just not enough people even IN the bar to have the kitchen backed up. The best thing this place has going is the location. Because it is in L5P, people may stumble upon this dive bar for a good meal after a hangover. I'd recommend coming here for the drinks and chips and quac, not an entree. I ended up here after doing some shoppin in L5P and some neighbors who live across the street recommended I grab a drink from here. I should've just got the drink. I ended up with a quesadilla and my friend a burrito. Just not enough flavor and lack of toppings. The shrimp in my quesidilla was whole, I would've preferred that it be cut a little more.No flavor, a little fishy (for shrimp) and just lack of. The husband and I had to check this out! When we sat down at our favorite table the waiter came over and asked us if we were ready to order. My nerdy ass busted out my phone and showed him the picture from their wall and I said, "I. Want. THIS." We got the tofu tostadas and they were awesome!! Crunchy corn tortillas, tofu, a nice chunky sauce...drool. The sides were refreshing for El Myr- rice, beans, and guacamole. We tried to eat it all but ended up with to go boxes. The downside of this story? I ran some errands alone and came home ready to eat my leftovers only to find the to go box in the trash and my husband sheepishly looking at me with a bean eating grin. Drink-wise El Myr covers every dark corner from PBR, to the Grizz which is a Coronita with a shot of tequila on top ( I know it sounds dangerous but it's fantastic), to their strong but cheap margaritas, to my most recent lover - The Dark & Stormy. Dark & Stormy you spicy angel, you! It's dark rum with ginger beer and they serve it in a tall glass for $6. It tastes so good and warms up the belly and the soul. But, enough prose about El Myr.
