Rooms dark and furniture not proportioned to the space. Dark walls revealed chipped paint. Hallway carpet had spots and looked seedy. Not enough hooks to hang towels nor enough electrical outlets. Front desk staff never communicated with bell stand. Parking $53 a day for valet;$35 for unattended parking across the street. Amenity package $35 for soaps and washes. Front desk staff couldn't explain our bill. The In-room book sported info about all their artistic brands and partnerships, but no info on connecting to internet. Saving grace is restaurant staff and others who absolutely rocked. Itzel, Jimmy, Brandon and Mark were incredibly helpful. The restaurant and bar are happening places during late afternoon and evening. Happy hour is 3-4 pm for free (included in the price of your room) wine and beer but in-room info says happy hour is 3-5 pm. Products offered are terrible; not even two-buck-chuck. Don't plan your day around this feature. Our traveling companions suggested Emeline because fresh mozzarella is made every day. Would love to be friends with the aforementioned staff, but won't return to Emeline to reconnect. read more

We have a 10 month old that needed to nap/breastmilk that needed to go in the fridge/needed to pump/husband needed to work we let them know ahead time and they were able to check us in early. Valet was also great, got us or pack n play right away and let us put frozen items in their freezer for the baby. We booked the room w/attached living room & king bed and it was perfect size for a family. Highly recommend this hotel also great location! Also saw someone else complain about entrance to hotel but had opposite experience and thought was great. There are two entrances and a ramp, we don't have a wheelchair but we thought it worked great with a big stroller. The hotel also isn't on a busier Main Street so we were able to easily park in front to unload. Also love coffee station! Valet and front desk customer service was also great! read more

I have traveled a LOT (at least up until COVID hit). This was my 5th time in Charleston (and the 5th different hotel I've stayed at in the historic district), and it was the best one by far. From the moment we walked in, the employees made us feel at home, and they continued to go above and beyond every moment of our stay. The hotel itself is lovely - very stylish while still having a lot of Charleston charm. The record player in the room was great, the bed was comfortable, and this might sound weird, but the shower was great! Other touches like them bringing a free pot of coffee to your room between -9:30 AM and the water dispensers to fill water bottles (on every floor, and they dispensed both sparkling and flat water) were awesome little extras. As for location, it can't be beat! Literally next to the Market Street market and therefore close to most of the best things to do in the historic district. Price-wise, it's definitely up there, but it's far from being the most expensive historic district hotel, and in the end, it's worth every penny anyway. I'll be hard pressed to stay anywhere else on future Charleston trips! read more

I have some mixed feelings about the Emeline. I had swung by Clerks (the coffee shop near the lobby) several times on my last visit to Charleston last year and wanted to stay here on our most recent visit. And we did! (++++++) +THE LOCATION is perfect, City Market is right out the front door. +We loved the feel of the hotel. Swanky. Beautiful lobby/reception area. Greeted with a little adult beverage upon check-in. + Clerks coffee in the lobby. +Frannie and the Fox restaurant on premises was so good. They were understaffed (who isn't these days) but the food was great (Pizza was amazing!) +Our room was pretty large and I Loved the dark paint and pretty velvet headboard. +We overlooked the courtyard and was there for 2 weddings, although we were happy the events ended at like 10pm. We could hear some music but it wasn't bad. +Plenty of outlets in the room! +We loved the cold water machine on each floor to fill your water bottles. (----------) - Our room could have used a few maintenance touch-ups with paint/. Some things were looking a little warn/used. - Commons areas could use a refresh/paint. - The bed was soooo hot and trapped body heat. - The price point just seems a little high. I would pay $300/night. Not the $450 that we actually paid. Overall I would recommend, but there are other awesome hotels nearby that I need to check out before I stay here again. read more

The Emeline hotel was phenomenal to say the least. We're from Los Angeles and we had weddings back to back from one another in consecutive weekends so instead of flying back and forth we decided it would be best to spend our week working in the Southeast. Emeline is located close to the bay as well as the downtown Charleston area. Close enough to King's St to walk to and more than enough options to eat or drink if you decide to not utilize the amenities within the hotel. Although you'll be hard-pressed to find many other hotels who have thought out with such detail the amenities that the Emeline carefully curated into their beautiful mid-century modern aesthetic which if you notice seems to play homage to the historical Charleston vibe with choices such as brick walls in the courtyard and oil-burning lanterns. The layout flows beautifully, it's inviting with stylish furniture which is actually comfortable, a hotel gym which has all the basics to stay in shape, water nooks to refill water bottles with sparkling or still water on each floor level and to top it off (and this is all I need to survive really) coffee can be delivered to your room each morning upon request. It was the perfect place for us to spend our days working. WIth different restaurants within the hotel, my husband was able to work in the cafe or the restaurant area downstairs while I stayed in the room if we both had a stacked meeting schedule. If it matters to you, Emeline is dog-friendly as we had our therapy dog in training Coco with us. They are accommodating to provide a dog bed and dog bowls to help even make Coco's stay more enjoyable and comfortable. After one evening, although we had originally planned to spend three days in Charleston and three days in Savannah, we enjoyed our time so much (particularly during our business hours) that we decided to extend our stay at the Emeline until the end of the week when we had to leave. Tom the hotel manager and his staff was extremely helpful and accommodating in making sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. Would definitely visit again the next time we come back to Charleston. read more

Spent 3 nights at Emeline on Easter weekend. Of note, if you have a car they recommend their valet service (which is the most convenient) that costs $49 a day. Which wouldn't be as annoying if the rooms weren't already $500 a night with an additional $35 "amenity fee" daily. So you're already at $584 a night in a tiny 350sq ft room reminiscent of New York hotels... we also didn't receive turndown service once in the 4 days we were there. I even asked a maid myself for additional towels/service and didn't receive. The room itself had a few knicks in the wall, paint imperfections, no fitted sheet, A/C never hit lower than 71 even though it was set to 69. I was also double charged for the stay. Was not notified that my Capital One booking was not "submitted correctly" by their 3rd party service so was shocked to see an additional $1000+ charge on my card for a room that I'd already paid for. The hotel made me send a screenshot of my bank statement to prove payment.. I also had to dispute multiple charges on my receipt as credits were not applied correctly. After flagging the above issues, they removed the valet charges for 2 nights but not an ideal experience for the cost of the hotel to say the least. read more

There is no bathtub available only with the upgrade that they don't have . However, the staff was welcoming and friendly. But still $500 a night for "MOTEL 6" I don't think so. read more

Bed bugs in room 355 at the end of the hall. We counted 29 bites on my legs after 2 nights. I hadnt been out of the hotel, and there were no mosquitos in town. I asked for a different room and stayed 4 more nights without a single additional bite. I have never been bitten by bed bugs before, its crazy how you cant feel them for several days and then its so incredibly itchy for almost 2 weeks! Overall, a good two-night stay. Nothing extremely special given the $470 per night rate. Conveniently located in downtown near the City Market. Very busy area on the weekends. Hostess seemed put out that we asked to be seated at another table that wasnt next to energetic toddlers and had high chairs stored next to it. Sorry, not sorry. Note to Gen Z parents: not everyone thinks your yelling children are cute. Our room was on the first floor furthest away from the front desk across the hallway from a Housekeeping storage room. One of the male housekeepers would hang out for what seemed to be hours texting and talking on his phone outside our door. Encountered this about a half dozen times while leaving and coming back to our room. Very weird and awkward. The strangest thing at Emeline, though, was the hetero-normative, borderline homophobic check-in when we arrived. The front desk agent (African native with a heavy accent) insisted not once, twice, three, but four times how he felt we would be more comfortable in a room with two beds, not the single king bed originally requested. Very awkward to the point of having to forcefully request our room reservation remain the same as originally requested. WAKE UP EMELINE!! Gay couples stay at your hotel. I wouldn't stay here again on a Friday night. I left a lovely hotel the palmetto hotel where you can get a lovely glass of wine cocktail etc. as a guest at that hotel. This place is mobbed. They ha e seats they say are reserved. I wish I never switched hotels. Not a fun atmosphere to be in. Palmetto and the market street inn are the best. It is also too dark and dreary for me. We decided to stay here for our anniversary because it is right in the heart of downtown. I was offered an upgrade before we showed up, and I took it. Afterwards, I looked at the floor plan and it apparently was a two story room. I personally didn't want that, we really only use the room flor sleeping and showers. I called and asked to downgrade, strange, I know, don't judge.They said it was already booked but they will take off the extra charge. Oh well, that's nice of them, no big deal. When showed up, everything was beautiful, the front desk was super friendly. The walk to the room through the courtyard is was beautiful, when we got in the room, it's what I was expecting, stairs for us to carry up our luggage, might be cool for some, but not my cup of tea. Reading some other reviews, some complaints about wedding parties being loud, etc. it definitely gets loud in the courtyard, but I think we were just exhausted and slept through it. The second night it was very noticeable, we ended up switching rooms. With the restaurant and bar and great courtyard, it's easy to see why it's stays so loud. Our new room was perfect, looked right out onto the market. Enjoyed all of the amenities available, had a great time, the coffee shop downstairs is great. When checkout came, the front desk was nice, helped me ship some gifts I bought. I asked for some change for tips for the rest of my trip, was told the bar or coffee shop will gladly help, as they don't have cash. So I walk over to the bar and ask for change, the bartender just shook his head no, and turned away. The coffee shop had a line out the door. So I waited for my Uber and all of the Valet people kept checking on us, to see if we needed anything, change? Yes, of course. Our ride took a little longer to show up and still every valet kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. 5 stars to that crew. Beautiful boutique hotel downtown Charleston.. upon checking in they greeted us with a Planters punch cocktail. The lobby area is beautiful, room was too knotch with lots of room, a living area with a big couch and a record player , a few albums as well. Lots of nice drink ware and a nice sized fridge. Loved that they had bags of ice ore packed in the water area. In the am there is a bar cart right outside Franny&Fox with free coffee. Room was super cozy.. entire staff very friendly and accommodating. We will have to come back. read more

So.... Emeline is a beautiful hotel. It must of been a weird weekend down pour minutes to checking In and streets were flooded so it was hard to "get" to the hotel...not their fault. We get there and we had booked 2 rooms, one of our party already arrived and tried to check but the rooms were not ready. An hour + later the rest of us arrive and now only one of the rooms were ready. The front desk offered us complimentary welcome cocktails which was really nice and when the other room was ready they offered another round of happy hour drinks for the inconvenience. We finally got into our suites and the room setup is very inviting and spacious. We all loved the record players and playing the vinyl's they provided. After getting settled in we had dinner downstairs and the food was great. We had great service and when the bartender realized all our drama with checking in he gave us a round of drinks on the house. Nice touch. The only issue I have with Emeline was the front desk, unfortunately when we checked in we did not get all the information about the amenities they provided like complimentary coffee delivered to our room or the bikes available for our use. We did have a small coffee maker in our room but it was not enough for 4 people so we waited in a long line at the coffee shop downstairs. Please note this place is dog friendly too. It was great seeing such cute pups walking around. For the price you pay for staying at Emeline the location is great, the restaurant and coffee shop are both great (long lines and get a reservation) and nice amenities but knowing you can get great coffee delivered to your room and bikes are available would be a nice to know. read more

Well Run, A Little too Large The Emeline is a good hotel in a good location. We stayed 6 nights to attend the Spoleto Festival. Prices seem high-ish. The rooms are large. We had a Collector's Suite which had a smallish bedroom with a king bed, a large bathroom and a nice living room. We looked in a vacated room that was a Society Suite which had a bigger bedroom and didn't cost that much more. I found that the bathroom in our suite was oddly placed. You have to go through the bathroom if moving between the living room and bedroom. If someone wants a little privacy in the bathroom then another person can't move about the suite. It also made the bathroom drafty. There is a small fridge in the room, but no coffee maker or microwave. Parking is a whopping $45/day. There is a lot across the street that is cheaper but they don't have in-and-out privileges and the Emeline does. Your car can only be valet parked at the Emeline, so more tipping is required. No breakfast is included which is a bit of a bummer. There is free coffee service until 9:30am, but the coffee was always very bitter. At 3-4pm there is a sort of happy hour with free beer and wine. Some cheap snack with it would have been nice. Staff were all pleasant and helpful. But the place is large, so it feels a bit institutional. Overall, the place is nice and, again, convenient. read more

From the outside, it looks like a lovely boutique hotel. The lobby is spacious and modern with polite staff. The one star was earned by the quality of the room. The room is slightly larger than a Hong Kong hotel. Two people can fit, but there is no place to tuck two roll away bags out of the way. It gives the feeling of an airport hotel. The decor is ten years old, and lacks something to pull it together. The room does not say "Charleston". It says under budget interior design. The room has water bottles you can fill yourself, but the dispenser on our floor was broken. There was no in room coffee service and staff was unable to provide an electric kettle for tea - which seems like a small thing for $400 a night. There is also no closet for your clothes, you just hang them on wicker cabinets near the bed. Finally, the adjoining room bed faces the dividing door and there is not enough sound proofing. It is easy to hear his phone conversation. The best thing is this room will motivate you to get out and see the city. read more

The "could've been better" completely sums up our experience with Hotel Emeline. First, I must say that I am writing this after a very obnoxious encounter with a staff member who berated us for doing something that we were told to do by another staff member. And that sort of topped off the experience... this hotel is poorly staff and the staff seem poorly trained in customer service. Maybe they have not adjusted to the increase in tourism, but the lack of staff to help with valet, to serve food/drinks, to deliver missing amenities in your room (think basic pillow cases and lotion), to just answer questions or help with information is astounding. 1. no room cleaning, even if you ask for it. 2. concierge department/front desk don't know Charleston enough to make good recommendations. One thought FIG restaurant was a chain... not only is it one of the best restaurants in Charleston, it's very near the hotel. It's also won a few culinary awards... again, lack of training. 3. valet service is sporadic, and lack training on helping guests with bags or just giving basic information, like "welcome, I'll park your car, just head into the lobby and to the front desk which is .... (location)." Instead it was me asking someone who was standing around if there was valet. Turns out they were the valet. At other times I watched the valet completely disregard an older couple struggling with their bags. The couple finally had to ask for help. 4. Our experience of the lack of service was echoed by a few other guests we met at the hotel... In short, if you want a luxury experience with good customer service, I recommend the Belmond or Wentworth Mansion. read more

Emeline is a cute hotel but not somewhere to go to relax. It's extremely busy and every night we were here there was either a wedding or corporate event. In the courtyard... right outside our rooms. Not to mention drunk attendees loudly roaming the halls in the middle of the night. We booked the hotel in May for a September girls trip and it wasn't until we arrived at the hotel to check in that we were told the room we booked was not available and they gave us a different room instead. It did end up working out fine but the fact that they didn't take the time to call or email was a bit unprofessional. The rooms are nice. They are very dark but I believe that's just what you get when a hotel is going for a 'luxe' esthetic. The baseboards could use a quick dusting but not the end of the world. Frannie and the Fox has delicious food - highly recommend - but make a reservation. Clerks Coffee in the lobby is cute but slightly overpriced for coffee and cocktails. They are one of the few coffee places that is open early in Charleston. Overall, I wouldn't shy away from coming here again now that I know what to expect. It is expensive - and there are little things that they can do to make it feel worth the $500-600/night price tag. read more

We booked an overnight Staycation at Hotel Emeline recently and had a decent experience. The hotel has been completely renovated from when it was a DoubleTree, and it looks amazing. The vibe is hip and trendy. The staff was friendly, but seemed overwhelmed much of the time- as it was a busy weekend (typically during SeWe and Valentines Day.) The hotel is fairly noisy (when busy) and there are LOTS of dogs, so expect some barking and dog hair around the facilities. If you are looking to bring your dog with you- this hotel is extremely dog-friendly. We love Frannie and the Fox (the restaurant located inside the hotel), so we were excited to experience the hotel itself. We booked because it mentioned online that there were bath tubs available in the specific suite we booked-- unfortunately, they gave us a handicapped accessible room (even after requesting a tub)- and the bathroom was very open with an open shower (so water sprays EVERYWHERE.) If you are in need of a handicap accessible room, it is great. They are also not doing room service due to Covid (which we were not aware of), so that was slightly disappointing. We did order food from downstairs to pick up- but the menu was extremely limited- 3 pizzas and 1 salad and meatballs. On their website, it says they offer room service, so we were misinformed. The food was cold when it was finally available to pickup, so we ate it and ordered something else from UberEats. If we had known we would not have room service available or a bath tub, we probably would have stayed elsewhere. Some of the things we did like were the reusable water bottles in our room (with a filling station on our floor), as well as the restaurant itself (we have loved dining at Frannie and the Fox on multiple occasions and enjoy the service and food there!) The record player in the room was also a unique touch. There are many wonderful hotels in Charleston, and our stay here missed the mark from what we are use to experiencing around town. read more

I had a very nice stay at hotel Emeline. The beds were extremely comfortable and the rooms look very classy. There are large bathrooms with showers with a very nice water pressure. The lobby is a very nice spot. Down by the entrance there are some nice chairs and couches. There is also a coffee shop in the hotel. Free coffee for guests is in the lobby and ends at 9:30am. There is also a restaurant in the lobby that looked quite nice. The staff is also very friendly. The wifi is also pretty fast. All in all this is a great hotel to stay at in Charleston. read more

And additionally it is insanely unhealthy for guests- this from The New York Times just a few days ago (that you have at Clerks every morning): According to the International Fragrance Association, there are more than 3,600 chemicals used in fragrance mixtures around the world. The hotel is located perfectly in the heart of Charleston and has a beautiful entry with an amazing signature scent. The check in process was smooth and the staff provided us with tasty welcome cocktails and found us dinner reservations for the night. Sadly this is where all the fun ended. As me and my wife walked to our room we were greeted with heavy cigar smoke in the courtyard area. The entire property is suppose to be smoke free but that rule does not apply to the party the hotel was having with hand rolled cigars. Next we entered our extremely outdated hotel that reminds me of an old Doubletree from the 90s. Our view was of a brick wall. We booked the Artist Loft and the description did not match up at all. Also, non of the VIP Expedia benefits were offered and yes it gets worse. We called down to the from desk on day 2 after not getting any of our soaps replenished. Well we had to call 3 times in 3 hours (7pm) before someone finally brought us soap. The shower pressure and temperature was the WORSE. The bathroom in room 406 does not look like the pictures online, it had old granite, dirty old bathtub with outdated fixtures. The pictures show a nice modern wall in shower and everything is so clean but not the case in my room and I paid for the upgraded room! We made reservations at the restaurant on site Frannie 3 weeks prior and they cancelled them the day of with no explanation. We came to find out it was because they had a party for the investors of the hotel. We asked for a late checkout the day before leaving and were told we need to ask the day at 9am. They gave us one additional hour for checkout. At checkout we were never asked how our stay was and we were rushed out. I will never stay here again or recommend to anyone. This is the first time in a long long time since I've had a bad hotel experience. I was never offered anything for my troubles and I am pretty sure I was given the wrong room layout. My friend that stayed with us was was given $400 back on checkout for their room but we received nothing. Go to the hotel for a drink in the hotel lobby but nothing more. Stay at the Dewberry hotel nearby for much better experience. I love Charleston and will be back for many visits but I am offended by the Emeline for how we were treated and mislead. A big disappointment unfortunately. At $300 plus taxes at $30+/- per night I expected a different experience. The room was tiny, poorly lit and with very little storage. The staff was semi-attentive and robotic. The anticipated Charleston ambience is limited especially given its historic location. read more

Me and my husband were looking for an escape and we chose Emeline. We loved the retro decor details and the rooms were so beautiful and cozy. The hospitality we experienced was warm and welcoming. We also enjoyed shopping at their Keep shop and dining at Frannie and the Fox. What a great addition to Charleston! read more
