TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Course manager and maintanence crew stood around greens for 10-15 minutes as we waited to tee off. After 15 minutes they finally acknowledged us and told us to play. Not wanting to risk hitting them or their dog we asked if they wanted us to skip this hole or wait. They responded saying to just shoot at them. Realizing how ridiculous this was we just skipped the hole and went to the club house for a refund. At the club house the same club manager spoke to us and made sexist remarks to my partner how we should have just shot at them and that my partner wouldn't have reached them anyway. Unacceptable behavior and etiquette from a course manager who should know better than to insult his patrons and not be courteous of players who don't want to have to aim at players that are on the greens. read more

This course sucks and so do the people that own and operate the course. I started out golfing here and after branching out to other courses in the Bay Area, I realized how mediocre this course is, on top of the overall conditions of the course being below average even during golf season, there is absolutely zero logic to tee time scheduling or pace of play. I booked a teatime on a Thursday at 3:20 with literally the entire afternoon open for whatever reason they allowed two groups of four to book 3 o'clock and 310 right before me, so when I arrive at the course for my teatime, they're eight people teeing off in front of a group of one whoever runs this course and operates. It has either never played golf in their life or does not give a single F about pace of play. Done wasting my time coming here there are plenty of other courses in the area that are far better. read more

One of the marshals (an older white man) in a golf cart approached my group aggressively, claiming we were "going too slowly." This accusation came from a man two holes away who shouted at us, even though our group was consistently being mindful of our pace and following proper etiquette by waiting until the group ahead had cleared the fairway before taking our shots. The marshal then began yelling at us for not having our own full golf sets, as if that was a legitimate reason for holding up play (wouldn't it make us faster if anything?). It was clear he was just looking for a reason to yell at us. In short, come to this golf course if you want to lose your ball in overgrown grass and get yelled at by angry strangers. read more

I've played here numerous times. It's very hilly. It rewards accuracy and punishes offline shots. All holes are par 3, with the first 3 holes requiring mid irons. The last 6 holes require a wedge. You can't beat it for the price and exercise. read more

Not sure if having 0 maintenance on any of the grass/paths (including tee boxes) resulting in an experience more like hiking in dirt hills, counts as having a "challenging" course. Greens are very small, and looks like the only place that had some maintenance, so yes in that sense it's a challenging as it rewards precision. But if you miss the green by like 3 yards you're probably rolling in the dirt down to the previous hole. I'm not a fantastic player, so I'm sure I had worse experience than a great golfer, but I think it's good to know if you're someone that is not extremely confident you can get your tee shots within 5-6 feet of the pin on every single hole, you will probably not enjoy this course unless you're looking for a place to practice hitting out of dirt, holes, and rocks. I have been playing her for several years in the Monday morning women's group. The course has steadily improved from my early days. Currently, it is in it's best condition. The gopher holes have been eliminated and the fairways are getting mowed well. The hills and side lies can make this a chalanging little course. Great workout for the price. As a Emerald Hills Fanboy with at least 30 total rounds here in 2 years, I can say that this course is only improving! They are fixing up the first hole with a beautiful new fairway. The temporary green is right behind the pond and is pretty short at like 60 yards max but you can easily lose your ball in the drink. The 2nd hole is still that hard to reach table top that slopes left to right. The Far teebox is ideal and I have used a driver a few times to get some reps but accuracy is key as most balls fall to the right near the 3rd tee box for ladies. The 3rd hole is also getting a new tee box and once it is ready, it is bombs away. 4th hole is also receiving a revived tee box and once that holds down, it should be awesome. The issue here is that the ball must stay high to reach the green. Aim for the trees. 5th hole, also being revived, is straight away but slopes right to left and many golf balls are lost here. 6th hole, also receiving a new tee box, is going to be wonderful once finished. Hole 7 is exactly the same, right against the street and you cannot tee off until the 8th tee box is clear. The 8th tee is also receiving new sod and new grass in the tee box and on the fairway. Should be ready soon. 9th tee box is also receiving a face lift, it was typically over saturated in the AM due to the tree shadows then clumpy and sandy in the late summer due to the heat. But the sod should take hold soon. Once again, if you have yet to experience this course, I would recommend it! Replay rounds are CHEAP and you can call ahead, reserve your time and a cart, and enjoy a few rounds of fun challenging golf at a great price. read more

Played as a single on a Friday morning and it wasn't busy at all. Decent tee boxes and fairways were a little rough but the greens were great! Had some deer on the course and it was quiet all around. Would definitely recommend for a quick round and a chance to work with your irons. There's some hills but I didn't mind that, made the course fun. read more

Not for Disc Golfers! I went today and paid $20 to walk the course on a weekday in the mid-morning. When we got there almost no one else was golfing. I expected it to be $17 because this was the price listed on UDisc and maybe even less with it being a weekday but it seemed like another $3 was no big deal. As it turns out paying $10 would have been too much after the way it went. The woman working the desk was pleasant enough and that's where this place even gets one star. As for the course, it was pretty bad, tee pads right next to ball golf tee boxes and then throwing to Red baskets for 1-9 and then looping around to play Blue baskets for 10-18. So you're running the exact route as the ball golfers. In a perfect world that would be fine but for us it was terrible. We would wait for the group of ball golfers to finish ahead of us, a common courtesy no matter what sort of golf you play, only to have the group behind us hitting into us as we made our way to the basket. This is not a big course and golfers we're teeing off and hitting balls within 10 feet of us on several occasions. We went back to the club house to rent a cart (another $20) to get away from the first group hitting into us and start at a new tee only to have another group come upon us and hit into us again! We ended up leaving after hole 15 because my buddy was getting so angry and we had driven a company owned vehicle and didn't want any bad exposure from getting in a spat with someone on the course. So to conclude we paid a total of $60 to play a course that is basically just a 9 hole and had such extremely disrespectful ball golfers we couldn't even finish for fear of being struck by a ball at every hole. If you don't want disc golf here then take out the baskets and don't claim to be a disc golf course! Don't setup pads right next to the ball golf tee boxes and then have the basket at the edge of the green! I'm going to leave this review everywhere I can think of so no one else makes the mistake of paying you only to play a faux 18 hole course and be ran off by old men who have no couth and recklessly play through disc golfers. While you have no control over what sort of unsavory patrons you attract you do have control over the layout of your course and cost to play it. read more

Hard to justify much more than 2 stars for this place given the layout (hilly, quirky) and the $15 greens fees on a weekend. That said, this 9-hole hole is worth checking out. Tips: * Don't go after it's been raining. It's sloppy and muddy. * Bring a 6-pack and hide it in your bag. But, don't get caught, as the people there love their firearms and a meth'd out employee may get all nutzo on you. * Don't keep score. It's a hokey course, and not the kind where you worry about your score. * Bring your GPS so that you can find this place. If you don't know where you're going, it isn't the easiest to find. * Leave your woods at home. The first 3 holes require a long iron from the tee, but the rest all play about 120 yards. Less clubs in your bag leaves more room for your beer. * Leave your expectations at home, too. Hey it's golf, and golf is fun, so have fun and don't worry about it. P.S. The last time I played there (December of 2006) the greens were really in very good shape and worthy of some extra praise. Nice job there, Mr. Greenskeeper! Not bad for beginners like me. Not so cool: Some holes had muddy water in the cup... granted it rained a couple days before, but wow the place doesn't drain well. Muddy tees too, especially when trees cover the tee box after inclement weather. 9-hole course (all par-3) with lots of hills... Some of the holes will frustrate you more than anything if you mishit. Take Hole 4, 104 yds with ~10yds uphill. You miss left, you'll lose your ball as it rolls downhill (don't bother looking for it); miss right and you'll hit into private property; hit it short & rolls back down to the same spot. Hole 2 is longest hole 164 yds, but has got to have 30 yds elevation! Pace of play can be slow with a group ahead taking their time, but otherwise the course plays pretty fast. Fees were $16 for weekends, but I think my buddy got a discount by booking online. I believe they also have netting and putting green for practice. Fairly lenient on rules & attire. It's an ok place to play for beginners to practice your irons and maybe for kids (if they don't mind walking hills). Be sure to get directions TO & FROM if you're new to the area. read more

This should be one of my more interesting reviews. If you're looking for a bizarre golf course where you can get rip-roaring drunk, scream at other people and not get in trouble, well, this is the place. The course is crammed behind an Elks Lodge. No, I didn't make that up. It is actually owned and operated by the Lodge. At all points on the course, you can hear children screaming at the top of their lungs as they play in the pool behind the Lodge. It's actually not as distracting as you might think. The course itself mutates during the course of a year from completely unplayable (drainage is non-existent) to moderately acceptable conditions. There are multiple blind shots (#2, #4, #7) to greens including one of the strangest par-3s I've ever seen in 20 years. It's all of a weak lob wedge to a green that feels like it's straight above you. I have to respond to one comment that this course is better than Mariner's Point. It absolutely, positively is not. It is a dump compared to the well kept fairways and greens in Foster City. Additionally, Mariner's Point is much closer to being a real golf course. Emerald Hills is closer to being a Fun House ride. (Mariner's also lacks screaming drunk people, but I personally find this entertaining.) Honestly, I've never seen a course in my life with this many drunk people stumbling around trying to play golf. I've had people hit into me, hit OVER me and I've even had a drunk guy come out of nowhere and want to borrow my clubs. (He didn't have any. He did however have a pilsner glass with him. No idea why he was on a golf course.) However, all of this craziness makes it a GREAT place for beginner golfers. Who could possibly get nervous with all this insanity going on around them? P.S. The green fees should probably be more like $10. read more

You know, I think I'll give this course three stars. I really want to give 2.5, but since most people give 2, I'll round up. It's really not the best golf course in the world, and it's really not maintained terribly well, but damn, it's fun to play on. My buddy and I hadn't been golfing in a few years, so we decided to try out a 9-hole as a refresher course (Aha. Such a lame pun). We came a day after it had been raining, and as the one guy said... yes, that was a mistake. When your ball lands on the green and doesn't bounce... yes, it's a bit soggy. Very glad we wore our boots. This place does not drain well at all. A lot of the area becomes bog. We lost about 10 balls between us, but easily found somewhere in the neighborhood of 20, so overall, it was a net gain of crappy range balls. I should mention that a few of those balls were lost IN THE FAIRWAY. The ground was so soggy that the balls would burrow into the ground on impact. I topped one on my second shot, and neither my friend or I had any idea where it had suddenly disappeared to. After a little digging, though, we found it. Straight down. All in all, though, I'll be happy to come back to brush up on my game. This is a very hilly course with a lot of elevation changes. Gives you lots of practice for technical golfing, I must say. I've been to quite a few 9-hole courses, and most are incredibly boring. You can escape with your 8 or 9-iron and a putter. This course definitely did require some variety of clubs. Wow, what a terrible course. Usually I'm all for deals, but this half off groupon 2-for-1 deal wasn't even worth the paper we printed the coupon on. Besides being up in the Redwood City hills (which I admit was nice), this course was in horrendous shape. It had 2 putting greens, which looked pretty decent but the driving range (if you could call it that), was something I could set up in my back yard. When we got there, the attendant had to go in the back of the "netted" driving range and pick up balls for us to put in a bucket. Although they provided us with a cart, there were absolutely no cart paths, and the gopher holes were so numerous that it felt like we were four-wheeling. I even lost my bag once going over a huge pothole. Besides the course shape (which included a lovely turf tee box on hole #3), the course itself was weirdly hard and almost every hole was a blind shot or some sort of height elevation. After hole #2, we almost gave up, but decided we should keep going, just for the pure entertainment of it all. Think setting up a golf course in your back yard and Emerald Hills is what you would get! read more

Bought a GroupOn for this course, thinking it was a killer deal and the pictures looked decent. Should have yelped it first!! The staff was helpful and friendly, but I would never come here again. The "driving range" was basically an oversized bating cage and the course was sloppy. No cart path, in fact we couldnt even determine how to get to the next hole at one point in time. The third hole literally had a patch of turf to hit from (see picture) and it was super noisy from the lodge pool and tennis courts. Save your money. read more

Its like Golden Gate Park (the greens are not well-kept) but the course was pretty challenging. I prefer 9 holes over 18, and that is why I love my 7iron. Come here for couple Years , scheduled granddaughter lessons, instructor /Head pro / didn't show up several time. Since I drive longer distance for lessons. January this 2020 I come and Cart not available because wet terrain. Understand , but after while I see two cart going out. Today beautiful sunny day. I was there exactly 3:30 ask for cart , can't carry clubs for me and 10 Years granddaughter, I was refused, because they close at 5pm. Ok, new rules ...after while practicing chipping see several carts go on course. Last one at 4:10.. That's was confusing for me . Went to office ask for manager .. not available. Answer Young Mann at desk and got answer: they are members ! I respect membership, but why they have sign "public welcome" . If you want make Private club go head, but don't mislead people come to your location Pay and be just kicked out. read more

I attended that first wedding hosted at the Emerald Hills Lodge and Golf Course (http://www.yelp.com/biz/D0KqGVwBTkvIqKskVd5WOw) and I predict many more to come. There is a lovely little area (unfortunately with no shade) for the ceremony. A long driveway allows a limo to drive very close to the ceremony site. A hawk flew overhead and delighted everyone. People are certainly there to golf. You don't feel that the space is private, but this may be because we attended a daytime wedding instead of an evening event. The sound system was terrible. I don't know if that belonged to the Lodge or if the DJ brought it. read more

Playing golf here is like playing in your own backyard. The course does not feel like your typical manicured golf courses. There's something comforting about that... However, the uphill hikes can really beat you down. But the time you've hiked up to the tee box, you're huffing and puffing. There is one really mean hole, I believe it's the 7th par 3 hole. Don't expect to get on the green on the first shot. You have to be there to see it. Probably wouldn't go back there again, unless I'm ready to be hiking around with by golf bag in tow. read more

A decent par-3 course located in the boondocks of Redwood City. The one thing they don't tell you is that the course is pretty hilly. That normally wouldn't matter, except I have a knee on its way to recovery, and all the hills didn't help matters any. The course is short, so it's a good time to practice your short game and chipping ability. The greens are super small, so beware when chipping and putting, because as others have said, your ball is likely to roll down a hill into the abyss. We got there around noon, and were the 3rd group at the first hole. I totally thought there was going to be massive slow play, but as it turned out, none of us were rushed or being held up by the other groups. There was one point where we didn't see anyone in front of us or behind us for a while that we thought everyone else quit. Then we saw both groups and realized that everyone's pretty chill there and there's no rush to finish. Overall, great course for the beginners, or groups where you just want to goof off, hits some balls and get some sun. read more

My husband and I are members here. I am disappointed in others that rate this course poorly. What do people with a Groupon expect for half off of $16? My husband has golfed at some of the finest courses in the world, and he loves this little course. You have to take things in context. For this price, you get to golf in the beautiful Emerald Hills, with amazing views, where beers are $2. A great place to take a beginning golfer or someone who is on a budget. This is the S.F. Peninsula, after all, so this is a steal. This is a wonderful non-profit agency, that raises money for scholarships, the Boy Scouts, etc. Members are kind, generous and unpretentious. We have only been members for 6 months. But, it has been such an amazing experience, we will never quit being Elks. We have visited Monterey, Palm Springs and San Francisco lodges. Perfect golf course for those that want to play golf, but aren't too serious about it. You can go at your own pace without worrying about pissing off the group behind you teeing off. Big plus is that they also have golf carts because this course is a hell of a workout without one. Plus it makes it easier to carry around that 18 pack. This course is an institution for anyone that has grown up in the peninsula. I am sure if you were to evaluate this comparison to other Golf courses it would rank badly. I grew up in Emerald Hills, before every possible square foot was developed. As the rest of the area got completely developed, and basically priced out at every working class hero, Emerald Hills Golf course has stayed pure. Have a beer, play some golf, and make a friend. I am by no means an expert in golf, but this is a great place to spend 15 dollars. The course is completely laid back, and comes with absolutely ZERO pretentiousness. I do not bring my own beer, because it is cheap enough to buy there. But I a lot of people pack their own beer in their golf bags. Personally, I think you should support the golf course, since it is on of the last affordable places in the area. read more
