I was recommended to try out this place by a former roommate. I am a tiny person, so everything needs to be shortened or taken in- especially dress clothes! The best thing here are the prices. They do a terrific job with alterations, but the prices are definitely what keeps me coming back. $6 to hem, and only a little more if you are shortening jeans and want to keep the original hem. I always do this with jeans so I can keep the original seaming and fading pattern on the original hem. I've had dresses taken in here and took in my wedding qipao to get altered here as well (had the sleeves taken off). They have consistently done a terrific job, everything is always done when they say it will be, and yes- they do ask you to try things on when you return for them as well to ensure that they got a good fit. The only things I don't like so much about this place is that it's not exactly "service-driven," if you get my drift. They're quick and efficient, and sometimes that goes over as brusque and unfriendly. But the prices are right and they do a great job! Oh- and cash only. read more

We had a crisis on our hands when our son's lovey (a small quilt) had begun to totally fall apart. He absolutely won't fall asleep without it, and no other blanket will do. So, our dilemma was how to get the blanket to someone to sew back together, and make sure it's back home before our son's afternoon nap.....and believe me, if you saw the condition of the blanket, you would know this was no small job. Per the recommendation of our dry cleaner, we took it to Emie. When she got to work at 9:30 a.m., we pleaded our case and said we would pay whatever it cost to do a rush job on the blanket in order to have it back by noon that same day. We wanted to do whatever it took to avoid a toddler meltdown, but we thought there was a slim chance any tailor could/would complete the job quick enough. Emie made the blanket look like new and had it done by 11:00 a.m.! Plus, she only charged us a very small fee. Needless to say, we'll be taking all of our alteration work (and blanket upkeep :-) to Emie in the future. We couldn't be happier, and neither can our toddler! read more

When it comes to alterations, there are only a few things that I look for. 1. Are they going to hemm my pants the proper length? 2. Is this place as overpriced as a department store alterations? So the answers to the questions: 1. They hemmed my pants and all 3 pairs came out money 2. The place was very reasonably priced and probably the cheapest alterations I've ever gotten in my life. I bought 4 new suits and needed the pants hemmed and cuffed. Saw the positive feedbacks on Yelp so brought theEmie two pairs of pants and gave them a shot. They nailed the length and waist on the first try. Kudos! The reason I gave them a 3 is because of the price ($10 for cuff an $10 for hem/waist) and because when I got the pants back one of them had double pressed lines. Not sure why they were pressed the whole pant and not just the cuff. Either way, if you're gonna do it then do it on the correct crease. They kept the pants and I picked them up the next day and they were fixed. Overall, an ok experience but took 3 days to get everything back correctly. Next time I'll go across the street and try their competition out (Sew Elegant). read more

I have been taking everything under the sun to Emies for many years mostly perfectly hemmed jeans. Recently my daughter needed a homecoming dress altered and entire size... it had a lining, and different seams. I brought it in and had her measured, and the dress was perfectly altered and looked like I just purchased a size smaller! The price was so reasonable! however it was still a tad big, because my daughter preferred it a bit tighter. They were so sweet to do a 1-day turnaround and take it in further which took a lot of time and effort! We came in the following day to pick it up which was the day of homecoming and it fit absolutely perfect! she did not charge me for the second alteration... I am so grateful that I found this place they are top notch, very professional and they care about their customers!if you want great work, I highly recommend! read more

WORST EVER!!! They stained my dress!! When I came to pick it up, I noticed 3 stains on the front of my gown!! I asked what happened and she said she didn't know. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? No apology or concern whatsoever. I want to warn you about their unprofessionalism in regards to owning up to their mistakes AND FIXING THEM. So frustrated with these three stains that (randomly) appeared on the front of my bridesmaid dress. So upset with their inability to own up to their mistakes/ ability to work with customers. tl;dr - Fool me once. I found Emie's many years ago on Yelp and started going there because of the good reviews. I have given them a good amount of alterations business over the years. They made up for the language barrier by delivering good quality work on time and at decent prices. Then management changed (refer to review by Kimberly L. below) and things started to go downhill. What remained the same was the undeniable language barrier, along with their questionable business practice of not accepting any kind of electronic payment. I leave the evaluation of the latter to the IRS. What changed for the worse was timeliness of service, and prices. More than half of the time, my alterations were not ready when promised, but I kept going to Emie's, hoping this would improve. My latest approach was asking for a guaranteed pick-up date and time in writing - with the result of them telling me the following day that the work they agreed to do couldn't be done due to some technical difficulties, i.e. not having essential sewing supplies on hand for taking in a pair of average blue jeans. I'm slightly disappointed that they didn't try harder to make up a better excuse. So, if you don't mind communicating in rudimentary English or a rather non-verbal way, pay in cash and "visit" a few times before you get your items back, by all means go there. $6 to hem a pair of jeans! Unheard of! Everywhere else I've called charge like $10-20! They have those podiums and mirrors for you to try your outfits, and they help you decide how you wanted them tailored exactly. It's a real alteration place, not one of those cleaners slash alterations. They can also do overnight alterations with a rush fee. P.S. Disregard the fact that if you call them you probably won't be able to hear them and they won't be able to understand you. They close around 6, they're open on the weekends, and they're cheap. Emie knows what she's doing, ask for her! I once let one of the other ladies do my jeans and it ended up being an inch too long (though I brought it back and they fixed it up and it was ready the next day) Don't be thrown off by their lack of hospitality, this isn't a B&B, just come in, put on what you're wearing in the dressing room, have them size it up for you, and get out. It's fast, reliable, and you know, I rather not have to stand around and chat it up with with the people working there. I think for jeans you can keep the original hem for $12 or go with their hem for $7, I've done both and they do a great job! read more

I have a suuuuper hard time understanding the folks at Emie's due to language barrier...but for some reason, it doesn't matter AT ALL. Every single pair of jeans I've brought here to be hemmed has come out measured out perfectly for me without me ever having to fuss about anything. They just KNOW what you're looking for I guess? I've been taking my clothes to Emie for years now and she has never disappointed. I've had jeans hemmed, dress pants taken in and hemmed, bridesmaid dresses altered, and repairs to ripped seams. The work is always done perfectly, I've never had to ask for anything to be fixed or redone. Also, she works quickly, usually having things ready to be picked up within 3 days or so. You can't beat the prices or the quality, so much so that I still come here after moving 20 minutes of the way because I'm afraid to take my clothes anywhere else. I have been in search of a new place to get my alterations done for quite some time now and finally decided to try this place out based on other Yelp reviews. Whew! It was good! First off, I'm pleased with the location - just right off of the 805 freeway at Clairemont Mesa Blvd. I just exit and its right there. So far, I have been lucky with finding parking no problem. I know there are times where that area can get very congested (i.e. lunchtime). Anyhow, I walked in and the place was clean and spacious. The lady pointed towards the dressing room and I proceeded to try on my clothes for measuring. The dressing room was cleaner than others that I have been in so that was nice. She proceeded to pin my clothes as I went through the three items that I brought in. I noticed that on my pants, she only pinned it once at the bottom back.... other places that I have gone to usually pin more than once... but I figure she must know what she's doing then! So that was on a Monday. I had two pairs of jeans to hem and a top to take in. Ugh... I'm trying to remember my bill... it was $22 total. The pants were $6 each (VERY reasonable!)... and the top was $10 because it was lined (not bad). She said I could pick it up after 3pm on Wednesday. Suhhhweeet! I didn't get around to coming back until the following Monday, but when I got there, she pulled out my garments and asked me If I wanted to try them on again. Nice. The other place that I used to go to, neverrrr asked me that. hmm.... So I try them on just to make sure since this was my first time getting stuff done there. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared to try them on, so I didn't have my heels with me for one of my pants - ughhh... I didn't get around to actually trying on my long jeans until a week later, but when I tried them on... they were just a TAD longer than expected. ughhhh.... so one of my pairs of jeans are just about touching the ground. ughhhhh! *sigh* it was still a nice clean hem job... but now i'm undecided about what to do now.... *sigh* prob stick them in the dryer and hope for a shrink job? ughhhh! It was otherwise a decent experience. I'm happy with the work and the service and I will probably be back again. Next time I'm bringing my shoes to try them on there! However, if this slight error happens again then I will not be a happy camper as something so minor shouldn't have happened in the first place. Will update my review again in the future. read more

I found out about this Emies Alterations on Yelp. Read the great reviews decided to give it a try. I brought in two pairs of expensive designer jeans, so I was still a bit apprehensive. I requested them to be shortened and keep the original hem, which is only $9 a pair. (A great price considering that I've paid $20 a pair when I lived in FL)Emie had me try both jeans and was good about giving me suggestions on how high or low to the ground the jeans should be given the type of shoe you wear. I picked up both pairs 3 days later, and I was completely impressed! She did an amazing job!! It was an even better job than what I used to pay $20 in FL for. I will definitely be coming back!! My first experience with Emie was with a poorly fitting bridesmaid dress. All the bridesmaids had widely varying bra sizes, but the bride gave zero f-s about our body types and dictated a one-strap dress. Emie worked a goddamn miracle, and I did not look ridiculous. I will be forever grateful. Since then I have returned multiple times for alterations, mostly hemming because I am short. She always does a nice job, even putting in a pretty stitch at the bottom of hemmed jeans. Her prices are a bit high...about sixty bucks for seven pairs of hemmed pants and an altered shirt.... but I wouldn't risk going anywhere else. Note that she does not accept credit cards, only cash, and there's no sign. There's an ATM at the gas station across the street, but none in the same shopping complex. So bring cash ahead of time. I found Emie's through Yelp and I'm glad I did. I have a nice floor-length gown that needed hemming and Emie did a WONDERFUL job! The dress is made of a very soft, almost velvet appearing material, and the hem isn't rippled or tattered anywhere- it's perfect!!! The reason she got 4 stars instead of 5 is because it wasn't ready on time but it was still worth the wait! I suggest leaving sufficient amount of days before an event because she's not as speedy but she's very efficient and does a good job. Totally worth the wait!!! I found some pants at Goodwill for 10 dollars and it was bigger than expected. I came across Emies and brought them in. It was my first time getting clothes altered and the experience was quite pleasant. The slim fit makes such a big difference and how can you go wrong with Michael Korrs dress pants for less than 20$! The jeans look great. I had a rather complex request to remove a Kevlar liner in a pair of motorcycle jeans and transfer this liner into another pair of jeans. My concern was that the stitching would be ugly and very obvious, but it wasn't at all. The stitching is very professional and very subtle. The reason I gave only 4 stars is because she didn't have it ready during normal business hours. I dropped it off a week ago; however, when I called in the morning to pick it up she said it wasn't done yet (sounded like she forgot). However, she managed to finish it that day (9 hrs later). Additionally, I wanted the Kevlar liner to be double-stitched, but it was only a single stitch. read more

Awful, awful experience! I took a brand new pair of pants to be hemmed. Emie suggested I tailor the bottom of the pants to give a slimmer look. After the alteration, I tried them on only to find that the inside seam on one leg was nearly in the front of my pants! I told her the seam was crooked and asked if she could re-do them. Her response was she could not fix them because she already cut them and that the seam was crooked from the manufacturer. Really? Seriously? They were perfectly straight when I purchased them. Why on earth would I pay money for a pair of pants with crooked seams? I told her IF and that's a HUGE IF...if that was the case, why didn't she call before cutting the pants and ask me if I wanted her to continue with the sliming or hem them or just leave them? She had no answer for that just that a lot of seams are crooked from the manufacturer and I should check them next time. What horrible customer service! I will never go there again.
