I wanted to come here to say how happy we are with our last two appointments to see Dr. Bland. We've recently moved from Carlsbad to La Mesa and my son's dentist of 18 years was retiring or I would've continued driving up there bit I took advantage of looking for a new dentist locally and we happen to find Dr. Bland. I am posting this for my wife who was a patient of Bland. Yes, as other reviews say she has a short disposition and not a caring personality for patient's concerns, however this could be overlooked if she was a great dentist. Sadly, she is not, and from I have observed she looks for anyway to overcharge for services. Today was the last time, my wife wants five crowns replaced and Bland said for color matching there would be $200 up charge per crown, $1000. extra! Never heard of this before, we contacted a couple other dentists to compare and they thought it was a joke, never an extra charge, it's always included in a standard crown. My wife's insurance pays 100% for crowns, so obviously just a grab for additional money from us! read more

I have been a patient of Emily Bland Denistry since 2019. I always have a great experience every time I go. First of all, Emily Bland always does an excellent job at taking care of my teeth. She has a gentle hand which is nice, and is very efficient. In addition, her assistant is great as well. She is very friendly, and always making me feel comfortable. I wish there was a way to give this business a half star . I was so disgusted with NOT ONLY how I was treated by Dr. Bland, but the verbal abuse that I witnessed her staff go through at least every week since the first week of July I've been going there and this has been going on for a very long time. She also does not give her patients a heads up on what their treatment plan is. I was told this past Wednesday I was going to be getting a cavity filled. I went to Dr. Bland for a check up which she did and said I to return for a deep cleaning. I returned and she referred me to an Endodontics in Rancho Bernardo (she is in La Mesa and so am I) and she said that was her only referral. Never did I get a teeth cleaning or did she explain anything to me after she did the "Deep Cleaning". And the receptionist was the one who said I would need 11 Crowns and 4 Root Canals; I was "thrown-back" and that Dr. Bland wants me to see an Endodontics (isn't she an Endodontisc???). She never explained a thing to me and reasoning for what needs to be done...she is the WORST Dentist I have ever been to!!!! read more

I have serious health issues which have lead to at least 12 major surgeries, many years spent in a wheelchair and countless times being hospitalized. After the medical problem I deal with, the dentist truly scares me to death. There was a time when I hated the dentist and put off going for many years in my adult life. Last year is when I put on my big girl pants and made an appointment. Dr. Bland and her team have honestly changed me. They are very knowledgeable, thorough, precise and light-handed. The office is quaint, very clean, and organized. Their staff is always on time and I've never needed to wait more than 5-10 minutes for an appointment. Even the parking lot is a nice size with many available spots. Dr. Bland and her team have done my annual cleaning with x-rays, filled a couple cavities, and fixed a chipped front tooth. I am beyond happy with all the results, especially my new and improved front tooth. I will never go to another dentist office after all the pleasent experiences here I recommend this dental office to anyone in the area. It is a lovely hidden gem... booked a new patient consultation with dr. Bland because my previous dentist of over thirty years retired. I last saw my old dentist three weeks ago. Dr. Bland is terrible! She is rude and lacks respect for clients. She gets very curt if asked a question. After X-rays and "gum measurement" not sure that is a real thing. She tells me I need 5-6 teeth extracted. That is bs she gave no explanation as too why and abruptly left. I have never had such awful treatment from any doctor I think she's a fraud a scam artist. Do not go to this person! After reading other reviews who had similar experiences with this doctor they all said they have medi cal insurance as I do, due to being disabled this fraud doctor discriminates against those with this insurance plus she tells you you need all this dental work when in fact you don't. Reported her to insurance fraud department. The good reviews are from people with good private insurance. Even a former employee wrote a review/warning and she admitted Dr. Bland bills medi cal for as much money as she can. She is truly an awful person and doctor stay away! read more

The office is clean. The front staff is sweet. Emily is nice and she did a good job.

When we arrived, the first thing I did was approach the front desk clerk. I said 'Hey, I know you have a policy about only patients going in the back but my kids are very young and this is the first time for each of them getting a filling. I told them I'd be in there with them holding their hand, is that going to be ok?' She said 'Oh, of course, that's no problem at all!' A while later the dental assistant comes out and calls my daughter's name and I take her by the hand and start to walk in. She says 'um, we only have patients come back here.' I looked at her and said 'Well, I told her I'd be there to hold her hand because she's scared.' She stood her ground and said 'Yah, but normally we only have patients come back.' Incredulous, I stared at her and said 'Yah, and she's SIX YEARS OLD. So I'll be coming back with her.' She stared at me and I stared back. She walked away annoyed and without comment. They got started, then told my daughter 'if something is wrong you need to raise your left hand'. After they stuck this gigantic plastic shield device in her mouth, she raised her left hand. Annoyed, Dr. Bland took it out and said 'What do you need? We haven't even started anything.' My daughter said 'That's hurting my lip really bad. It's pulling on my lip really hard.' Dr. Bland says, annoyed 'well that's what it's supposed to do, it needs to pull your lip out of the way so I can do my job'. I ask my daughter if it's pulling the inside (gum) or outside (skin) of her lip. She says it's pulling the skin of my lip too tight. I asked if they had any chapstick. They obliged and put Vaseline on her lip and put the shield device back in her mouth. She gave me a thumbs up that she was now fine. A simple question and a simple solution, both ignored by the professional who was too annoyed to bother finding out. Everything else went ok for the duration of her procedure because my daughter was very compliant and the shield device worked for her. This would not be the case with my son. Dr. Bland had no patience for anything other than perfect compliance when giving a directive. She was annoyed that he wasn't immediately in the right position in his seat. That he was putting his hands up to block the blinding light in his eyes. That he was looking around concerned instead of looking straight forward. Granted, they tried to get him some glasses that fir correctly to block the light, but when that didn't work for him she went back to being irritated. She tried to put the shield in his throat. He immediately gagged, unable to fit this huge thing in his mouth. She kept saying 'What's wrong? Just lay still. Just stop moving.' She tried another 3 times, each time his gagging getting worse until he started to cry. Then she said 'Why are you crying? We haven't even done anything yet.' It was the way she said it, as if she couldn't believe a child would cry over being choked and gagged repeatedly. She went to try again and he said 'I can't do it, I can't do it it's too big' and started crying harder. More questions of 'why are you crying? Just lay back. Why are you crying? Be stil. Why are you still crying?' When he turned his head to reject her attempt to put it in again, a huge sigh and throwing up of her hands. 'Well then we will not be able to use the shield and water and debris will just go down your throat, do you understand?' A threat? Really? Debris going down his throat is a possibility, not a certainty. They never had these huge throat shields when I was growing up and I never inhaled water or debris. How can you phrase it to a child as a threat that harm WILL come to them because they couldn't fit a giant shield in their throat? Dr. Bland lacks the proper patience and 'bedside manner' necessary when dealing with children, especially scared children. I even told her ahead of time that my son had anxiety, but that didn't help. Adults might be fine with Dr. Bland, but I will not be taking my children back there. Impatiently and coldly asking a scared child questions like 'Why are you crying? We haven't even started yet. Why are you crying? It's not going to hurt. Why are your crying? Just lay still. Why are you crying? Don't move. Why are you still crying?' over and over eventually seemed to border on sadistic. I finally told her to her face 'Stop. That is not helpful. Ok? Asking why he's crying isn't helping anything.' It's as if she was incredulous that sticking a giant plastic gizmo in his mouth and gagging him repeatedly, or being in a dental chair under a blinding light might be scary when you're 8. She looked at me like I had two heads but by that point I didn't care. I'm NOT a helicopter parent and I'm very aware kids have to tough it out and deal with hard things like dental visits. But a kind word, a gentle touch, some patience, a little empathy...all the basic things you would expect from ANY professional dealing with kids were, in my opinion, lacking. read more

Medi-Cal covered patients filling small gaps between real patients? I have never heard of this kind of nonsense till now. Find a more courteous dentist if you are on Medi-Cal. read more

I gave the office staff all of our insurance information before going in. They said they would check on everything to make sure we were covered, etc. But they didn't actually do that. They have you do all of your new patient paperwork online, which is fine, but their program never actually submitted our information despite how many times I filled out the INSANELY long forms. They don't offer paper copies at all. So when we went in with our kids and ourselves for our appointments we were back a square one, them trying to contact our insurance in spite of me already giving them the information---they couldn't find it! They handed us an ipad to fill our forms out...tedious and kept bouncing off the page. So frustrating. There was a different office worker from when I first contacted them and between the two of them they were giving me different information. Then ALL of this annoyance to just find out they don't take our insurance. A waste of time and when it comes down to it: INEFFICIENT office management. Good luck. read more

I was on a side trip to San Diego on my way to LA when my lower dental appliance broke after falling and hitting the hotel bathroom floor. I Googled for nearby dental practice and came upon Dr Bland's clinic. After assessing the damage, she gave me a quote and proceeded with the repair. I was there in the morning and knowing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Bland was able to deliver and fix my denture the following morning! Needless to say I was a happy camper! I called my insurance the same afternoon to inquire about my expenses and she was dead on! Only reason I'm giving her a 4 stars was the wait. Well, not entirely her fault. As one of her former employee I have the same thought and issue with other former employees and patients. First of all, i have never written a review and this is my first time using yelp but i feel that in doing this will give me closure and peace of mine. So bare with me. Working with Dr. Bland for a little over 2 years is like working in hell everyday her attitude is not calm and nice. Her Quality of work is below average taking comments from patient that had some works done from her. If you are not a private patient she wont take time explaining your treatment plan and if you have more question she is in a hurry and she said your done!!!! very rude. She is prejudice for those medical patient even though that is her only bread and butter because she don't have patient without them. Normal dental office have at least 2 asst. but with Br. Bland she is too cheap to get extra hand to help so all the work of 2 people relies on one person. There is no feeling of consideration or thankfulness for all your hard work at the end of the day. Comments from some of her patient includes painful treatment, filling came off, implant crown are not secure so it came off leaving patient crying . I felt so bad for them At time she is physically abusive one time she had the nerve to pinch my ears because she was looking for a specific instrument that i can't find and she had to search for it herself. It was very painful, unnecessary and uncalled for. She is so lucky that i didn't find a Lawsuit Do not waste your time coming here.lt will benefit you to search for somewhere else. She is Mean, paranoid, unkind, vengeful, love to criticize me all the time especially with my accent .She is not passionate about being a dentist and giving proper care. She is money hungry and give 30 minutes for each patient so she could collect more money for the next patient Also I tried to apply where she works at the La Maestra Community Center and as they read my resume they got so disappointed they said that dr. Our previous dentist recently retired and the current practice was bought from him. He did excellent work and had reasonable and realistic prices and we will really miss him. After going to the previous dentist for about 30 years, we thought we would try the new dentist. This was a huge mistake. We went to the new dentist and assumed that it would be as good as the previous practice and prices would be realistic and reasonable. We were wrong. The charges are neither realistic or reasonable for the work completed. It looks like she wants to get rich quick. My wife and I went there this week and I had some dental work done (2 small cavities filled and teeth were cleaned. The bill for this was over $1400. I found this hard to believe since the previous dentist would have charged $200-$300 (I am guessing this). This is pretty good payment for an hour of work. Needless to say, I will never return to this dentist under any circumstances and if you choose to go there, get an estimate in writing (ours was a verbal estimate given but not in writing and was much less that the final bill). We got a lot of double talk as the explanation and I assumed that because this verbal "fee" is only worth the paper that it is not printed on. There is no shortage of dentists in San Diego County so there is no good reason to go to this dentist. There are plenty of good dentists available in any neighborhood. Save yourself a lot of money and go somewhere else. Anywhere else would probably be much better. read more

Recently, my grandson of 16 years-old was told by Dr. Bland that he had 6 cavities. This seemed unlikely since he had never had a cavity before. When he was taken to another dentist two days later, we were told he had no cavities. Scary! Dr Bland was about to drill into six perfectly good teeth in a teenager. Very helpful and friendly staff. My 10 year old had to get fillings and sealant, she did a great job in making him comfortable and at ease.

Work is great, front staff is AWESOME! Only issue is since I have anxiety with dental work would be to communicate more to me as each procedure is being done. But I did ask them to check with me on one occasion and they have done so since. The work I've had is great and the convenience of them working with me is remarkable.
