Purchased a Groupon for Lindsey at Emmett Rode for a partial balayage. It was an awful experience. It started out nice but it took a long time for processing and waiting for Lindsey to juggle another customer. I was on time but waited 20 min or more to start my service. Upon applying the color, Lindsey kept reemphasizing that she had to charge more for length even though she didn't even come close to using all the color in the bowl. She put only 10 strands and I thought it would be more. I showed a picture of what I was trying to achieve and the result was a very warm color. I was hoping for the blond to be cool. When drying my hair, I didn't see much of a difference. She asked how I liked it and I said it was ok. She scoffed at me and said only okay? I know she realized that she said something she shouldn't have because she hustled me out of there and didn't ask for the extra fee for the color. I gave her the cash I had on hand which covered a portion of the fee she was trying to charge. I've never been treated so disrespectful as a customer. I wrote a review on Groupon and looked for it again about a month later and found that it was taken off. I will find other means of feedback and let you know that I was no way disrespectful in sharing my experience. Thanks! read more

She charged me additional $45 when I got there with the promise that she will make my hair look like the model pic I showed her and the result in the pictures are self explanatory! I went to Amie for coloring back when she still worked at Blo on Armitage. I had dyed my hair with a box of I don't know what a few months prior to my visit and it was taking on a distinctly ORANGE sheen and I was NOT a fan of it. So Amie and I went through the color books and I picked out a shade that *I* liked and she told me that if we went with a DIFFERENT shade, that the shade that *I* picked would be the end result, due to the undertones that already exist in my hair. I was confused but ONE of us has a license to do this shit for a living and one of us does not, so I let her do her thing. And of course, she was right. And my hair looked MAGNIFICENT. And then she switched salons and moved from Blo to Emmett Rode and I followed her when my hair decided to do some kind of weird, post-summer color change. And again, Amie fixed it, because she is made of magic or something. Anyway, she's lovely, she knows her shit, and she's reasonably priced. Go forth, and get some good hair. read more

I can only comment on Rachael Eng, the waxer in the back room. I originally went to Rachael a couple years ago when she was part of the Pretty In Pink breast cancer beauty month. As it turns out, her regular prices are low enough that you don't even need a promotion. Brazilian waxes are $35! On Wednesdays she offers complimentary brow/lip wax with a Brazilian. You really can't beat it. The tiny room is tucked in the back and is kinda scary at first. However, she's so professional, you completely forget. She uses hard wax, which means you pull the wax right off, no paper. I'm not sure how, but somehow it hurts less, which is always great when someone is ripping hair from your nether regions. Plus, she's knowledgeable about all things Bravo, which is also a great distraction! I don't go often because it's not convenient to my home, but she's my only choice for Brazilians! I can say this even after having paid siginificantly more and had less satisfactory results (cough, Bliss, cough). Rachael's the best! read more

What a comfy place to get a haircut. While you don't necessarily feel uber-pampered here like you might at some snooty spa, you feel as though you are surrounded by friends. Multiple conversations are going at all times, and there is wine available for those who want to partake (and they will give you a heavy pour ... and refills!). They use the full gamut of high-end products for everything from their coloring to their shampoo, products, and styling tools. And although the salon is small, they have enough benches and chairs tucked into every nick and cranny that it's never uncomfortable to wait for color to set, for example. I see Katie D. for my cut and color, and never have I been more satisfied with either. I also know she will be honest with me about any new cut or color I am hoping to try. The worst part about going here is heading home, knowing I will sleep on my new 'do and make the blowout suffer a bit before heading out the next day. The prices for services are definitely affordable from a Chicago perspective, and the salon is easily accessible by bus or train, in the heart of Lincoln Park. Wholeheartedly recommend! read more

I highly recommend Dana and have been getting my hair cut from her for 8 years now. I followed her here from her previous salon, and despite her old salon offering me crazy deals to stay there (free haircut, even), I went to that place for Megan and didn't think twice of trying anyone else. Megan has seen me through short, medium, and long hair, from an extremely light blonde to a dark brunette, and everything in-between, and she nails it every time. She even stayed at the salon late with me one time when my highlighted blonde hair basically refused to take the brown dye. She would never let a customer leave unhappy. This is such a fabulous salon! Super cute decorations, furniture, and lighting - it almost feels like you are at a girlfriends house. I bought an offer from HomeRun with Anna Berman yesterday, and lucked into an open appointment today. I consulted Anna about making my super blonde hair a little more natural looking in time for my July wedding. She knew JUST what to do. She used a toner and a very subtle low lights. It looks awesome and super natural. I went from White Blonde to Champagne Blonde - doesn't that even sound better?! I recently purchased a Groupon for a full balayage with Lindsey. She shut me down completely when I showed her a picture of what I wanted, which wasn't even that extraordinary. Instead she stated that she could do it in the similar range but not exactly, which I was completely fine with. She even charged me extra for the toner on top of the Groupon and I was even willing to pay for that. However the pictures I showed her were a dark red range but she turned me completely blonde. When I tried to tell her later that night that it was actually way too light than I was going for she accused me saying that's what I wanted. She was giving me attitude when I was trying to politely express that this is way too light than any of the pics I showed her. It was really unnecessary the way she was treating me as a customer who wasn't even being rude to her. I had to find another salon immediately to fix my hair, and even they were surprised how my hair looked compared to what I wanted. Needless to say I will never be back here because her attitude was really unwelcoming. read more

She recently colored my hair and it came out better than the pictures I showed her! I typically go to Rachel's Spa for her waxing at Emmett Rode. Rachel is great and she's really easy to talk to. One reason why she's great is the fact that she uses hard wax which sticks to the hair but not to the skin, so it hurts a bit less. Rachel has always been the only gal I've gone to to get my waxes, however, the reason why I give it only 3 stars is because the price is kind of steep once you include tip and sometimes I feel a bit rushed when I go to the appointment. She schedules everything in 15-20 minute time increments, so if you are the type of person that is short on time, Rachel is your go to gal. Overall, she's great and I highly recommend her. read more

I discovered this place because I live in the area, and decided to give them a try. I made an appointment for a single color hair process, and normally it takes right around an hour to get this done. I made the appointment for 5:00 on a Friday, and walked in a little before 5:00 and ended up waiting until 5:50 to even get into the chair. While the stylist was taking care of me, she was also styling an associate's hair, and working on another woman and took a walk-in. Needless to say, I ended up not leaving there until 9:15pm because she was working on so many people at once. I had dinner plans for 7:30 and had to cancel because at that point I wasn't even close to being done. It was a disappointing way to spend a Friday evening, and the least she could have done was reschedule me realizing that she triple booked herself. To me, she was more concerned about the quantity of appointments than the quality of each of us, and the outcome of the color was not worth a 4 hour appointment. I also did not receive any additional complimentary services or a discount due to both the delay and the extreme amount of time I had to spend there. read more

If you want red hair go to Anna! I have medium brown hair and wanted to go light auburn/strawberry blonde. its difficult! especialy if you dont want to look fake. Anna came through and found a colour (which she bought especially for me) that was just right. Yes, red fades more quickly than other colours but she added a few highlights to break things up and gave me a natural look which fades well so i can come in every 8 weeks and dont need to rush in any sooner. she is also realistic and will explain what she is doing. this is great for control freaks like me! Anna is very nice and a good conversationalist. not of the prissy, annoying hairdresser ilk i've dreaded seeing for most of my life. read more
