The empanadas are okay. Then again I'm used to Colombian empanadas and these are a little different since they are made Argentinian style. They get a 4 because the staff is friendly the service is quick and the empanadas are tasty and filling. Ordered about 6 empanadas and two cokes. I got a pepperoni, caprase, spinach, bacon, beef, and buffalo chicken. Of the ones I ordered my favorite were the buffalo chicken, spinach and bacon. Buffalo chicken needed a little more sauce, spinach was good and the others I just wasn't that fond of. The beef has Spanish olives and egg in them which just isn't what I was looking for. I mean if you like Spanish olives you'll probably like them just not for me. Check the place out and judge for yourself. It's a little out of the way for me so I probably won't be back, but definitely a good lunch or snack option if you're in the area. read more

Having spent six months in Argentina way back in the day, I have to give this place a full five star review for the food alone - excellent, excellent empanadas, savory AND sweet. The empanadas are baked, not fried - that's the authentic way to make/serve them. The chimichurri sauce is delicious - if it were socially acceptable, I'd drink the stuff straight. They stamp the name of the type of empanada directly into the empanada crust, so there's not guesswork involved when you bring home an order of a variety of the empanadas. They are a 20 step walk from the train tracks - super easy to pick up some empanadas on your way home from work. Finally, the place is owned and run by legit Argentinians. I had never had an empanada so I kept it safe by choosing chicken and caprese. The boss ordered beef and mushroom and her daughter picked out BBQ pork. The caprese was out of this world. It almost looked like a little pie, open-faced, begging to be eaten. Sadly, my chicken empanada stuck to the paper and fell apart way too easily. I was dropping chicken all over the floor. It was, however, incredibly flavorful and delicious. I had been fairly hesitant to order from here as the majority of the empanadas have onions of which I am not a fan; however, I barely noticed the onions. This was their first brick and mortar shop. They are new as a restaurant.. The first day, the owners did not know what to expect. Don't order something they don't have ready. He's right. It takes too long. That's not the kind of restaurant they are. You order what they have ready. It's a pick-up and go place. Some days, good selection. Some days only three types. The food is great. I consider myself an empanada expert considering my first empanada was bought on the streets of Peru in a market. If you don't know what they are, they are breads stuffed with delicious fillings. Originally from Spain and Portugal, many Latin American countries have derived their own versions. These, I believe, are Argentinian style, which means they're handheld. They're actually super cute in that they have the type they are stamped into the crust. After my co-workers had brought in some to work a few days ago, I decided to make the trip over to the shop. Located in downtown Riverside, street parking is primarily what you'll find. Which is fine because the shop is small, with just a few benches and tables, so you're probably grabbing it for take out. I've heard their stock is quite depleted by dinner time so make sure to stop by earlier in the day. When I was there (about 11:30 on a Friday) they had already run out of tuna and caprese and didn't seem to be making more. I ordered beef, BBQ pork, and onion but I've tried the chicken, spinach, bacon, sausage, ham & cheese, and Nutella and banana. Out of all the ones I've had, I've enjoyed the BBQ pork and the onion the most. The BBQ pork is excellently seasoned and the onion is stuffed with cheese which makes for a yummy combo. At $2.49 each, these empanadas make for an excellent and affordable meal. 3 empanadas will probably be enough for the average soul, although they're good enough you could probably eat more in one sitting. Beware of the chimichurri sauce: it's oil based and one drop of it could ruin your clothes. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here after it was recommended by a local realtor we met while looking at an apartment in Riverside. We were so glad we went! The restaurant itself is very small and simple, but the empanadas are fantastic. We decided to try a variety of 10 empanadas, especially since they are $2 each when you buy 10 or more (a great deal if you ask me). We ordered the chicken, sausage, bacon & eggs, onions & cheese, caprese, beef, mushrooms, BBQ pork, ham & cheese, and apple cinnamon. My boyfriend's favorite was the chicken, which I thought was quite tasty, too. My favorites (in no particular order) were the sausage, bacon & eggs, onions & cheese, and ham & cheese. I typically don't like anything with mushrooms, but this empanada was awesome! Th empanadas are also very cute since the edge of the dough is stamped with the name of the filling. That makes it super easy to tell which ones have meat and which have veggie fillings (great for all the vegetarians out there). The chimichurri dipping sauce is so flavorful, too! It really compliments every empanada we tried (well, except for the apple cinnamon I suppose). Since the restaurant only has 2 small tables at the front and they were both taken, we ended up bringing the empanadas home. We split 5 for lunch, and saved the other 5 for dinner. They are quite filling and reheat nicely in the toaster oven. A week later, I'm now craving another EmpanadUS fix! Can't wait to go back and try the other varieties. This place is my favorite for lunch in the Riverside/Brookfield area, hands down. If you've had empanadas before, these are some of the best you will ever try. If you haven't tried them, you're missing out. Stop in here ASAP and treat your tastebuds to something heavenly. To give you an idea, an empanada is kind of like an Argentinian pizza. It's not really pizza, but go to the website to see exactly what they are- kind of a cross between a pizza and stuffed pastry. The ones here are baked, not fried, so they are a little healthier than some versions. I've tried (so far) the beef, chicken, ham & cheese, caprese, spinach, corn, and broccoli. I like the chicken when having meat, but the caprese and spinach ones are far and away my favorites. The beef ones have a little too much olive in them for my taste, but the chicken ones are delicious. The caprese and spinach ones remind me of pizza, only a lot nicer to look at than a slice of pizza. The chimichurri sauce is also drinkable by the gallon it is so good. I would like to buy a 5 gallon bucket if they sold it! The place is really small and best-suited for takeout. There are benches in the area where you can sit and eat, or better yet, take a sack to the Brookfield Zoo and save yourself the pain of eating the gross food they sell there. I ate at the Lagrange location. I ordered the beef and Ham and cheese empanada. This store has lots of variety of empanadas. They are reasonably priced. I love that they have chimichurri sauce. A little oily nevertheless it's there. The crust is a little thin for me. Very clean. I had great service. The woman behind the counter was very kind. I love the small town of Riverside, My wife asked me to pickup empanadas from this small bakery that specializes in them. I was given strict instructions Not to eat any of them. So, I bought a dozen for the family and I ate 2 there.. I guess she expected that. They are smallish but really good and filling. The great thing is that the dough is imprinted on the edge, indicating filling so no guesswork. I would say, if you are in the area, it is worth the trip. Remember to ask for the Chimichuri Sauce.. Person taking call had no idea what he was doing and was being coached by a jerk in the background who was loud and openly talking bad about our order (what we wanted, how we wanted it, etc). Said at one point in the background "How much are they gonna f----- order? Do they want chips? If they don't say then f---- them they're not getting sh--." You get the idea. Hung up mid order. Just tried these guys at the Randolph Street Market Festival. I only ordered one mushroom empanada which was ok but the alfajor! OMG. Alfajores are these delicious cookies that are made with flour, like little round sandwiches. Inside the sandwich is a thick, gooey layer of caramel and then it is rolled in coconut shavings. Absolutely delicious and these guys make them homemade. YUM. When I lived in Argentina I couldn't stop eating these. They are so good. They also have other flavors like dipped in chocolate but I opted for the original and was very excited that this gem exists in the Chicago area! read more

Found the La Grange location while on a stroll today. All I can say is: YUM! Although they don't make the dough from scratch, what they do use is very tasty (and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars). I had the chicken and a beef with the chicken being my fave. That one reminded my of my mom's empanadas. My lil guy had the BBQ pork. I didn't hear a peep from him until he devoured it. I ordered about 100 frozen empanadas for a cocktail party I was having. They were a big hit. Side benefit is that I ordered too many and my kids got to eat them. They are a great quick lunch/snack/dinner. I keep them frozen and simply heat up what we need. Sometimes my daughter makes them in the morning, wraps in foil and takes for her lunch. My kids LOVE that the name of each one is crimped in the crust. My son made me call and order more so that we always have some in the freezer. So yummy and convenient.
