To start, we were served water with ice that had frozen contaminants and particulate in it that was melting into the water. Absolutely disgusting. We had the option of bottled water or water without ice. I chose bottled water. The food was meh, nothing special and mostly boring. It was basically frozen Chinese food from a food service truck that had to be fried. Although I did have to roll the dice on whether I'd get food poisoning. The thing that tilted in my favor was the food was dunked in boiling grease. There were unidentified pieces of something on the plate, perhaps crumbs that have been over fried? And the grand finale? No fortune cookies. Why? Because they were all stale. The waiter literally told us this. And the waiter, very poor and slow service. We saw him very few times and we had to constantly remind him of things we had asked for previously. This was a last minute spontaneous try at Chinese food. They are just a few minutes down the street. The restaurant is very clean and the decor is classic Chinese restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised that they had duck on the menu! And Pad Thai. We got orange chicken, which was fried crisp in a true orange sauce with orange rind. The vegetables were fresh and cooked so they snapped, aka perfectly. We also got the Mongolian beef, extra meat, few onions. The sauce was dark and delicious , beef was tender. This was a nice surprise and a delicious authentic Chinese dinner. We will be ordering regularly now! read more

When we decided to try Emperor's Kitchen in Winthrop Harbor IL,we did not realize that their food and drink were from the age of the Ming Dynasty. The water served had specks and eventually the waiter substituted bottled water. The service was slow in coming out of the kitchen and the waiter was forced to indicate there were no Chinese cookies as they had all gone stale. The management will be forced to recognize, just as was the case with the Ming dynasty, that the failure to adequately handle the hunger of those it serves will be its downfall. It will soon join the fate of all the other restaurants that used to surround the Emperor's kitchen and will be a footnote in history. read more

We decided to give this restaurant a try tonight and never again! As we were serving our $50 dinner at home there was a strand of hair at the bottom of the rice which looked like a pubic air. I called the restaurant back to let them know and they refused to give us our money, but offered to make us a fresh batch. With what? More pubes like this is ridiculous. We even called Zion police for assistance and they said nothing could be done. So we strongly suggest stay away from the restaurant unless you don't mind. Horrible from beginning to start! If I could give it zero stars I would. First off, we there at 6:30pm to have dinner for my brothers birthday. There was literally 1 table already eating. A couple came in after us and was placing a takeout order. The place was empty! The guy at the front didn't even sit us until 20 minutes after we arrived because he was so concerned with going into the kitchen to help the cook put together takeout orders. The phone only rang once while we waited for an hour!!! I'm all for supporting local businesses, but this guy had lots of trouble understanding English, that he even had to call someone on his cell phone to help him translate what the couple was asking of him. We waited while he sat on the phone asking another person on the line about an order he had trouble understanding. Why isn't there someone else to help him? And why even open for dining when you're obviously not ready to serve? He was only concerned with take outs! Never came back to ask us if we wanted an appetizer or water refills. My mom got so upset that his service was beyond poor! And we're patient people, but an hour seriously? After the hour marker we all got up and left! Never coming back. Either get help up front or don't even bother having dine in! I'm sure other people will suffer as we did. I'm going back to speak to the owner and this ruined my brothers birthday dinner! The menu is huge as it includes both Mandarin and Cantonese. This means they have Low Mein, Chow Mein, Chop Suey, Sweet and Sour, Moo Shu.....well the menu is 8 pages so it takes awhile to read. The place is a regular restaurant with many places to sit with authentic decor. Everything is also available in take-out. I really like the lunch special which includes 3 meat entrees and fried rice for under $5, they will ask what you want for entree. Closed on Tuesdays. Really good Chinese food. read more

The shrimp fried rice and the egg foo young had a bit of a stale taste to it. Both dishes were luke-warm when we received them. We ordered a "two in the basket" dish that was supposed to come with a "crispy potato basket". Just to find out when we got home that the only offer that portion of the meal as dine in. It was a huge fail, as the entree on the menu said beef and shrimp and we opened a box of chicken and veggies. The chicken and veggies tasted good, however we were very disappointed in the service there. Also, count your bill up, I read a review talking about how they add tips. We ordered 40 dollars worth of food and paid about 50 walking out the store. Crab Rangoon is a no. Tastes like they put plain cream cheese into a wrapper. Egg rolls are not very impressive either. Tastes like one you could get from the freeze isle. Overall: I would order again, but only in small orders. I drove about a half hour to try Whey Chai with my friend. My friend had heard a lot about it so we thought we would give it a try. Upon entering we saw an old building but a beautiful interior. There was no one in the building, that should have been a warning. We ordered the the egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken. This is not the typical Chinese restaurant without the "red sauce" that I am familiar with. My friend enjoyed it, however quite frankly it was the worst Chinese food I've ever tried. The food was hot, but the rice was stale. I'm Surprised I didn't get food poisoning . The key to their success is the service. The lady was one of the nicest customer service. She was an older lady but still was kind and not invasive. I feel torn. The service was amazing, however the food doesn't warrant a trip back. She was so nice and they really tried. Please, when you pack up chow mein, please pack the noodles separate. They are supposed to be crunchy. What I got was basically hot, soggy lettuce with even soggier noodles and a few shrimp. The only complaint as that the food was not ready on time - but the customer before us made multiple trips to his car so I suspect that was the problem. We've lived in Zion about 17 years now and we are wondering why we haven't tried his place before. The decor is nothing to write home about, it is dated but does bring to mind a Chinese restaurant. If decor is your thing, you're in trouble. However, the food is outstanding! My wife had the Sesame Chicken and she said it was very good. I had the Moo Shu Chicken with Mandarin pancakes. It was outstanding! Seasoned just right and the pancakes were superb. The waitress/Hostess even showed me how to properly roll the Moo shu into the pancakes! She was also wonderful, attentive but not hovering. The rice was cooked just right. Our friends had the Hunan Triple and it was the best I've ever tasted. Yes, it wasn't crowded(our party was the only ones in) but don't let that deter you from trying the wonderful food and service. read more

Well i order here often since it was the closest thing to me. I wont say its the best ive ever eaten. But the spicy chicken fried rice is really good. I tried the general tso chicken, and chicken broccoli. Even some fried chicken wings, but i will just stick to the spicy fried chicken rice and continue on with my day.
