I have been patronizing China garden for many, many years since they've been open. When the original family ran the business, I remember the young woman who did a lot of the cooking, she had a little girl. And when they had the dining room open, the kids would sit in there and do their homework very pleasant, very nice family. I know the gentleman that worked there. He used to own the I think it was called the euporium. It was a little Greek grocery store right there on Genesis. It had burnt down and that China garden came out of that destruction along with that little strip right there. And I love China garden. I have always been treated well, always gotten good service. Good food. I never felt out of place many a lot of you know, people patronized that establishment and I always recommended them highly. And only recently I felt like I wasn't welcome. Thank you came out cold and dry. The food was shoved through the door slams shut as if I was not welcome. And you can bet your last dollar. I will not be coming back. That's it, I don't know If the young lady at register was the daughter of the owners or under new management, i just know how I felt. I just decided just this one time to go in because I was very hungry. But if this is the treatment that I get, then there's no telling what I'm going to get, served. I won't be coming back. And I'm sad to say that, because I really loved China garden, not just the food but the warmth and kindness I was shown all theses years. Great place to get lunch for the office. This my go to place for picking up food for my team. Is it the best Chinese food, no, but it's reasonably priced and consistent. Overall, the food is good. This place was near a friends house and so we carried out from there. I was amazed as to how bad Chinese food can be made. Three different entrees, and not one of them worth reordering, I have never seen so many onions in a dish at any one time. In a dish with chicken and shrimp, I found three shrimp, Sweet and sour, which I did not eat, had nothing other than red sauce, no pineapple and peppers, Chicken and Chinese veggies, very little chicken and broccoli is NOT a Chinese veggie, but this place things that it is. If you are looking for very cheap Chinese food and you don't mind a "homely" kind of atmosphere then try this place. We went as a group of eleven and we ended up very full even with leftovers. We spent only $5 each. They serve very basic Chinese food. While their Hunan wasn't so good, basic American Chinese dishes like Mongolian, Szechuan, and other beef and chicken dishes were not bad for the price. I'm the type that reads the entire menu and asks million questions she was very knowledgeable about all of the items on the menu that I asked about, even the prices. This was a good american rendition of chinese food. I cant say it was authentic but it was definitely delicious. The atmosphere was cute it could use some redecorating but it was a cozy little place that did its best to be a tribute to china. They offer dilivery which is nice. We went to this place after Chicago got 10 inches of snow and the lot was ploughed. I think that this place was good. It had a very extensive menu. We're at Waukegan marina for awhile so I thought I'd get takeout from china garden - most of what I ordered I really liked; roast pork lo mein was very good! I put a little sir racha for spice and it bounced it up a notch :-) Also BBQ spare ribs - yummy and huge! Messy but worth it wow! The other dish I loved was ma po tofu! Slightly sweet slightly spicy tofu with veggies a nice veg dish to try! I wasn't impressed with the pork fried rice surprisingly - it was rather ho hum and didn't eat more than a few bites. Altogether nice little spot and I may try other dishes if we're here much longer. Check it out good food. read more

I can't say much about a lot of the menu because I normally just stick to the orange chicken and crab Rangoon. Both are exceptional! They give you about 8 crab rangoons in one order and they are the best! The orange chicken is also really good and it's a full portion that could easily be shared for two people. read more

I feel like im being generous with 3 stars. The atmosphere is nice. To be expected of a Chinese place. I ordered an orange chicken and chicken lo mein combo with a side of fried crab sticks. They said it would take 10 minutes, and it probably did. But after 20 minutes if waiting at one of their tables I finally got up to check on my order and it was just sitting there. Nobody bothered to say anything. I was the only costumer and the lady who took my order walked past me twice. I tried the crab sticks first. I got 4 for $5. They were long and thick, so portions wise I got my money's worth. The sticks were pretty mediocre. It's just sticks of artificial crab meat with a very thick fried crust that falls right off. It was so bland that I started eating the crust off just so I could then eat the crab by itself, which helped. The crust actually muted the flavor of the crab. When I got to my entree I was pleasantly surprised to see a veggie roll, which I assume came with the combo. It was good, no complaints. The combo was $11 for a decently sized portion. The lo mein was good only in regards to the chicken, which was plentiful and yummy. The noodles and veggies are extremely bland, and kinda funky tasting. The orange chicken is decent, but tasted like fish. Like overwhelmingly. This tells me that the chicken was fried in the same oil as fish or the chicken itself is fed fish, a sign of low quality fish My final conclusion that portions are good for the price but the food itself is bland and unimpressive. The beef broccoli is excellent! Recently, we tried the sweet and sour soup and were disappointed. It lacked flavor and found ourselves pouring in salt in attempt to boost whatever flavor may exist. So I saw only 4 people on a Friday night very under staffed they also have a dinning room. The food was ok . The decor is messy and low-end, with harsh fluorescent lighting, marginally cleaned tables, and the owners' young kids doing homework and practicing their electric piano at the back tables. There are some Americanized Chinese gems on the menu that are some of the best you can get anywhere. The Orange Chicken is perfect with bits of orange zest and a perfect coating. The Crab Meat Rangoons are smaller then you might get at other places, but they are delicious and you get 8 per order. The Pork Lo Mein... the Pork Lo Mein... speechless. Somehow it's meaty and smoky and light with perfectly cooked noodles and just the right amount of everything.
