I was looking for a contractor to remove a large backyard patio and some steps. I checked with…read morefriends, did a Google check and looked on Craig's list and obtained 3 quotes for the job. I decided to go with Oak Hills Landscaping after talking to Luke the owner, who I found on Craigslist. I was a little skeptical because you just never no what your going to get on Craigslist but after talking to Luke I knew I had hit a home run. He was very knowledgeable about the entire re-landscaping process not only concrete demolition and removal. We agreed on a price that was very competitive and Luke showed up when he said he would, 7:30am. He showed up with an employee named Kellen and both worked hard to remove nearly 50k pounds of old concrete and take it to a company that crushes and recycles it for road base. They got it all done within a day and Kellen even moved a large rock and pulled numerous stumps for me using their Ditch Witch SK1550, an amazing machine! It's compact, enabling it to get through narrow side yards but extremely powerful and versatile as it has different attachments they were able to use for different tasks. I couldn't be more pleased with their work ethic, knowledge, care for my property and politeness. Luke is licensed and insured which I confirmed through the California Contractors State License Board. If I hire Luke for the backyard landscaping I'll post some after pictures. Unfortunately, Morris was unable to fulfill some additional work that we wanted done at the same time (re-positioning a fence gate, drains). The entire job felt like bait-and-switch. My neighbor had used Miguel from MC Landscape for concrete work - and I was impressed by the work. I set up an appointment for a quote. Miguel was unable to make it because of a trailer tire blowout. Fine, stuff happens. We re-scheduled as the weather warmed up. Instead of Miguel, his brother Jose (of Green Vista) showed up. Entirely different company. I chose Green Vista because Jose claimed he had done many jobs with Miguel, and promised he could do the fence work with the concrete. We signed the contract and Jose was available within a few days. He arrived on time and dug out the yard in the first day. Everything was going fine. However, after the first day, he had another job to go to so there were several days where nothing happened. This was critical because the weather had changed from cool and humid to sunny, warm, and dry, which I believe affected the curing (more on this later). When he returned, he had some logistical reason why he would now be unable to re-position our gate-the main reason I chose him in the first place! Also, he had difficulty finding the metal cap for the sewer clean-out in our side yard (metal was specified in the quote). He installed a plastic "Water" labeled cap, and told me he would return to replace it with the correct "Sewer" cap. I wasn't around for the pour, but when I got home it already looked dry from the sunny. Not good for concrete. Nothing done to preserve moisture. I hosed it off several times that evening and the next morning. I received a call from Jose the following afternoon, instructing me to hose off the concrete. Ya, well I was already doing it. I asked about the sewer cap, and he said be was working on finding one, but that it would be plastic. Over the next couple weeks, I called several times, but my calls were not returned and we still have a "water" cap on our sewer cleanout. It's been about six months, and the concrete shows signs of cracks beginning, and several cracks have already formed in corners. Next time, I'll stick with Morris for concrete. He was the same price anyway.

Beware of staying at La Quinta on Monterey Street in SLO! We stayed 3 nights at this hotel last…read moreweekend and I prepaid for the entire cost on Expedia when I booked the reservation in October 2024. When we got home I checked my credit card app and saw that La Quinta charged me for the entire stay even though it was prepaid through Expedia. After calling the hotel 3 times over the past week, they still haven't reversed the charge so now I have to dispute the charge through my credit card app. Has anyone else experienced something similar with La Quinta in SLO? Seems like a sketchy way to do business and now I'm wondering if this is something that they get away with since a lot of people don't frequently check their charges to see if they've been double charged by the third party booking site and La Quinta. This was my first time and last time staying at La Quinta. I will not stay there again.
