Called in for help since I'm trying to get back into skating. I needed help with updating my skates. I was laughed at and insulted. The person on the phone had terrible people skills and was of no use to me. They felt It necessary to refer to my skates as cheap Big 5 skates (without seeing mine) and claimed my want to update my cheap skates would only cost me more then New skates...... How about this, maybe this is all i got and all i can afford. It's people like this that make it hard for beginners to feel welcome and comfortable asking questions to learn there equipment. instead i called a roller skate snob. I like Empire Skates because it's one of the rare businesses that make you want to go a brick & mortar rather than shop online. Here you can find great deals and genuine connections. I started going because I joined a local roller derby league, and the last time I skated was 22 years ago, so I was relatively new to everything. The shop owner, Amy, painlessly walked me through my first purchase last year, making sure that everything was covered (both literally and figuratively, if you're keen on those things). Patient. Knowledgeable. Attentive. I have been experiencing a lot of foot and ankle pain in my R3s and was told to look into purchasing some Antiks. I am not at all familiar with skates (been skating since Oct 2016) and was freaked out by the thought of going to a skate shop with little to no knowledge. I was intimidated. My boyfriend, our dog and I head over to this shop on a Sunday (YES, they're open on Sunday!!) and Amyzon had me try on several sizes. She was so patient! We were there for over an hour because I continued to try one different sizes. She understood that this was a major purchase and I needed time to make the right choice. I have a tendency to ask the same question over and over and I know it can get annoying but Amyzon had no issue in repeating herself. Also, my bf is interested in getting custom skates and Tom had no problem with answering all his questions. He also helped another customer with purchasing a helmet. He provided one on one service with him and made sure the helmet fit like it is suppose to. They run a great shop. I made my purchase and will definitely be going back. Good customer service. I get off work at 5pm and empire skates close at 6pm. Thought I wouldn't make but I did and I'm glad I did. Very knowledgeable of their inventory and notice I was on a budget and recommended me alternative tools for skates. Nice little spot. read more

This is a cool little skate shop located in old town upland. My wife, two year old daughter and I stopped in on a Thursday during the Farmer's Market event. There are plenty of different types of skateboards, skates, skating gear and even a few cool shirts, shoes, stickers, etc. The employee working the day we stopped in was super nice, friendly and understanding. Despite my two year old throwing a HUGE temper tantrum because she couldn't take one boy and one girl skate, the employee kept a smile on her face and commented on how "cute" my daughter was. Her father, on the other hand, did NOT think his daughter was acting "cute"...ahem. Anyway, we did walk out with my daughter's first pair of skates and were happy to do so, after seeing how understanding the employee was. We didn't get any safety gear on this visit because my daughter is only two, and I don't really see her riding rails or jumping things just yet. If my daughter takes to skating, and does show serious interest in it, I know we'll be coming back HERE for all of her skating needs. read more

Empire skate is the best!!!!! They really go out of their way to help! I sent a message asking about a product at 9 pm. I expected to hear back the next couple business days but no I got a reply that night. Ordered what I needed and was on my door two days later. They will help with anything from how to maintain your bearings to what will be best for the surface you will be skating on. They even sent me how to videos. I can't say enough about empire skate. I have driven 45 min to their location and it was always worth the drive. read more

AMANZING!!! I stopped in on a Thursday afternoon and was helped by Amy. I've wanted a pair of Roller Skates for a while now and since my son just recently started learning how to skateboard, I decided to finally bite the bullet. I got a pair of Moxi Beach Bunnies, pads for both my son and I, and a couple of helmets. Oh, and some awesome Starry Night knee high socks! Amy was such a great kindhearted person. She was never rude and I never felt judged for not knowing a whole lot about what I was purchasing. I will definitely be going back to Empire for all of my skate needs. I dont want to give them even a half star. The customer service was awful. I live an hour away and saw they had just stocked the luminous wheels. I opted to make the drive and pick up. A couple different reasons why. But does not matter. When I got there the guy was rude. I got my bag and left. I get home and a few days later went to put the wheels on my skates for a beach skate. They were 97A's not 85A's that I ordered. I tried to call and they did not answer. Instead, upon hanging up I received a text message to text them. And so I explained what I received and I attached pictures. Now I understand the packaging was labeled wrong but the wheels clearly were labeled 97A. In their reply to my text, they stated they were aware of the labels being wrong. I asked for a shipping label to return the wrong wheels and asked that they ship the correct ones. They refused to cover both shipping cost and questioned why should they do that. Hello CUSTOMER SERVICE. My friend said she would go out there and do the exchange for me. So this past weekend she did just that. Where the same guy criticized the bearing tool she had and continued to make more rude comments including "these cant be your friends ONLY outdoors wheels" Not once have they even apologize. A sincere sorry goes along way. Being in the derby community I have heard good things about Empire. But after this I will let everyone who asks to stay away and why. read more

So this is more of a preliminary review before I fully get my skates I suppose? I just wanted to say that my experience so far has been incredibly amazing, and I know during times like these it's important for small businesses to have good, kind and honest reviews. So I just wanted to say that this place has been amazing! They answered quickly to my questions on their social media and sent text updates asking me for more information and giving me updates along the way (also a big thank you to whoever does that because I swear I am confused 98% of the time and it has been so helpful to have questions answered clearly and quickly). You never feel judged at all, and the customer service has been great. The website is easy to navigate and gives you great information on how each skate you're ordering should fit, the same applies to safety gear. So usually I save my energy for supporting woman owned small businesses because I am a woman and own a small business too. I brought my daughter here to get some skates, along with safety equipment for both of us. I had an issue with customer service (one employee was a total jerk) and the owner took it seriously and replied to me directly within the hour. I appreciate someone who values each of their customer's experiences, so this meant alot to me. I've actually edited this review because of how she addressed the issue. Only reason it's a 4 instead of 5 star is because of my experience in the shop. But I am hopeful that the next time I visit, we will have a better time. I really think this shop is great. Empire skates not only has the best selection, price, and quality to choose from but They will help you decide on what to get every step of the way. I've been here twice now. I ordered a new pair of custom derby skates after 20 years in my old worn out pair! The staff and owner are very knowledgeable and helpful... I wasn't impressed by the staff here at all. I came in to get sized and they were in such a mood I couldn't wait to get out. The vibe was not what I expected at all. They were stand-offish and just blah, no eye contact of anything. They weren't really helpful either. I had to ask how they should fit and basic questions as such. They were just in their own world watching tv and putting stuff up on shelves. I was the only person in the shop-and it was also within 30 min of them opening. As a complete newbie I would expect a bit more help or customer service from girls that have been skating 5+ years. (I had to ask). But instead they just handed me a couple of sizes to try lol instead of breaking things down for me or asking me how they fit blah blah blah. I basically guessed at the end of it. Overall it looked like a neat place. I did buy a a couple things to support small business but really didn't want to because of the experience. I'll shop else where from now on. read more

Went in here to buy some moxi skates in which they did not have the ones I wanted. Then the ones that they did have they one had one size in each skate so disappointing. The man then went on to speak poorly of the wheels. Every poor customer service, was helping everyone else that Walked in AFTER us. Was to busy eating to help us. Every question we asked he never gave a direct answer to. Will not go back again!!! The only reason I needed up buying them was because I really wanted the skates! He had a every weird vibe to him, was acting like he knew everything and made it seem like we knew nothing about the skates. Came in here in a separate occasion and the last that helped us was sooo sweet and helpful even gave me some tips when skating, but unfortunately will not return because of the rude man. read more

Now this is a drive to get here. I live in the LA area, Upland is a few freeways away. Now with that being said this is one of my FAVORITE places to go for all my derby needs!! I have gotten wheels (yay for Titans) new bearings and one of my favorite socks (beer socks) here.
