When we checked in, the woman at the front desk named Raina was extremely rude, cold, and short with us. I tried to brush it off and went to take a few photos of the Christmas decorations in the restaurant. The man standing at the host stand named Richie saw me and, when I politely said "don't worry, I won't get you in the picture," with a smile on my face , he snapped back "I don't want to be in your picture." This entire exchange happened within the first 10 minutes of trying to check in. Throughout the rest of the stay I watched the bellmen greet virtually every other guest who entered or left the hotel. Not me. I was consistently treated like I was just a kid or teenage tag along with parents rather than an adult guest who was paying to stay there. Basic acknowledgment and ordinary human respect were completely absent. Nice location and cute decorations do not make up for being ignored and spoken to with open disdain by multiple staff members. The hotel has a charming, older vibe, but it's well maintained and fits the beachy, Balinese-inspired theme perfectly. Our room came with an above-average kitchen setup, which made it easy to prep snacks and simple meals during our stay. Free water bottles in the lobby were a nice touch, and the complimentary breakfast (7:30-10:30 a.m.) was way better than your standard hotel spread, fresh, even the bacon was crispy but not over cooked, tasty, and filling. It's just a short walk to the beach, the kid-friendly "children's pool" area, and of course, the famous La Jolla seals. Be warned: La Jolla has its fair share of hills, so if you're bringing a stroller, be ready for a bit of a workout. I love that the grounds are secure and you can allow your children to go into the courtyard area and play the provided games with peace of mind- knowing that they'll be safe. They provide tons of outdoor seating options and grills for tenants, which makes cooking a breeze. In order to enter from the beach/boardwalk, you must have a room key to enter the premises- another awesome perk. This keeps all the riff-raft out of the area. &At night, they also require a room key to enter through the front of the building- which is a newer feature, and much appreciated. You can leave your beach toys & chairs outside your room without worrying about someone coming to steal it. We have locked our bikes up downstairs in the courtyard area & nobody messes with them. This is such a great place to stay & an amazing tradition that our family has. We look forward to our visit every May!

Our room was nice, but not exactly what we expected. We had requested a king ocean-view room--the view was absolutely amazing--but the bed was definitely closer to a queen size. Unfortunately, my husband had trouble sleeping because his side of the mattress was sagging. On a positive note, the bathroom was spotless--really well maintained (check out my photos!). We later had different guests above us and experienced the same thing, so it seems to be more of a sound insulation issue than inconsiderate guests. Another inconvenience was the lack of electrical outlets. There were only two outlets in the main room, and half of one didn't work. We ended up using the third outlet in the bathroom to charge our cell phones. There were also no outlets near the bed, which was inconvenient since it's nice to keep your phone plugged in and within reach overnight. The room was charmingly antiquated. The mini refrigerator also leaked water during our stay. It appeared the small freezer compartment had accumulated enough frost that it likely just needed to be defrosted, so it seemed more like a maintenance issue than a broken appliance. We also noticed a few small bugs in the room during our stay. Given the oceanfront location and coastal humidity, this may simply be part of the environment, but it's something future guests should be aware of. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely stay here again. Next time, we'd request a top-floor room to minimize the noise from above.

The brand new lighting in the bathroom was a big fail! The lights are mounted behind the mirror and my wife could barely see because it's so dim. I have to agree even finding my contacts was difficult with these dim lighting. Fix those two things and you would have a five rating.

Up a million stairs- I didn't want to do it several times each day on my vacation. Across the street, the beach was too crowded and rocky and it smelled like an Andy Gump. The guys at the front desk were super nice, rooms are clean and a great view, but I wouldn't stay here again or even recommend it.

Only a farm door for the tiny restroom, so you hear each flush quite loudly. Water pressure for the shower is non existent. Walls are thin, you hear every sound from upstairs, rooms next door, and the street. There are no black out curtains or door guard, so the room is very bright in the morning. Pillows are lumpy and about 11 inches in height, and not good for neck support. No toiletries here either. Only good thing is that it seems decently clean. Overall, this is the worst place I've ever stayed at. If you enjoy sleep and comfort, booking is not recommended.

We checked in and the lady at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. However, our room was a lot smaller than I had expected. If cars are passing by, you'll hear it from the room, which made it hard for me to sleep. Also, there was a lady saying that her laptop was stolen and called the police. On the upside, it is pretty convenient to walk to downtown La Jolla and is very close to the ocean. Parking is also easy! Overall, I would probably pick somewhere quieter if we were returning to La Jolla, but other than that, not a bad price for what you're getting!

We stayed here for our wedding night and I have to say, while the room is beautiful and comfortable, the customer service would almost deter me from ever coming back. The first interaction I had with the front desk guy, Al, was awful. I called to see if there would be any chance of getting my bridesmaids and I into the room an hour or so earlier than check-in. His response was snippy and rude and he acted like I was a bother rather than a paying customer asking if this favor was possible. Although check out was noon and check in was four, he couldn't even promise they'd TRY to make it happen. When my future husband called back a while later (because he'd been so rude and unhelpful to me), Al was even MORE snooty to my fiance. He asked us if "we expected them to throw out the previous guests to make room for our wedding party". That's ridiculous and completely unprofessional to say. We were just inquiring if anything could be done, not demanding unreasonable requests. Anyway, that all passes, we get into the room at 2 for pictures and getting ready. Then comes the next issue. My groom leaves a gift at the front desk at 2 to be delivered to us girls up in the room and explains that we'll be leaving by 330, so time is an issue. They promise to deliver it. 3 o'clock rolls around and we still haven't gotten the gift. He walks up to the counter and asks them to please bring it up right then. He walks away from the desk, but again calls up 5 minutes later and we still haven't gotten it. Then, he calls the front desk and says, we need it delivered now, we'll be leaving the hotel shortly. And they spout out some excuse about how someone had given them explicit instructions not to deliver it... which was a lie. We get the champagne gift at 320, just as we're about to leave for the venue. Lastly, that night my new husband had left his backpack at the front desk to be brought up to his room during our ceremony. We get back from the ceremony and reception and his things are not in the room. But then, they refuse to deliver it stating they can't leave the front desk even for a moment in case someone comes in. We have JUST gotten married and this is something that should have been done hours ago... the worst customer service. Also, they don't do room service in the morning, so thankfully we had enough foresight to order orange juice the night before for our mimosas in the morning. Seems like a weird thing not to have when so many people are on honeymoons and breakfast in bed is a pretty common thing... On the good service side, the Manhattan Bar opened early for us to take the groomsmen pictures in. It was very thoughtful and accommodating of them! Customer service is a big deal. We recently stayed at the Empress Hotel in La Jolla while celebrating my daughter's college graduation, and overall, our group had a great experience. The biggest strength of this property is its location. You are right in the heart of La Jolla Village and within easy walking distance of restaurants, shops, the coastline, and just about everything you'd want to see. For a weekend getaway, it's hard to beat. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating throughout our stay. Every interaction felt genuine, and the team did a great job making us feel welcome. The rooms themselves were a little worn and could use some refreshing, but they were clean, comfortable, and perfectly adequate for our needs. Nothing luxurious, but certainly functional. One pleasant surprise was the complimentary continental breakfast. Hotel breakfasts can often be an afterthought, but this one exceeded expectation. The outdoor patio was a great place to enjoy coffee and start the day. We also enjoyed having a quality restaurant attached to the property. As the evening progressed, live music added a fun energy that our group really appreciated. Valet parking is available, but if you're willing to put in a little effort, street parking can definitely save you some money. The Empress may not be the newest hotel in town, but between the outstanding location, friendly staff, solid breakfast, and overall charm, it provided a memorable home base for a wonderful graduation weekend. read more

Hotel staff was very helpful and courteous We had reserved a Empress room but found it to be noisy. The room was next to the elevator. Moved to the deluxe king room which was very nice with plenty of space. Comfortably bed with nice bedding. Parking was $18.00 a day and worth it to avoid from keep moving your car around to avoid the street limits. Continental breakfast had a waffle maker along with pastries and cereals. read more

Certainly not worth the money & I got it for $79.00/night on the internet. Old, outdated rooms. I noticed some mold around the window area & the room has a mildewey smell. I also overheard 2 cleaning ladies talking about the BEDBUGS on the second floor. Will not stay here again. read more

When we checked in at 6:00 our room wasn't ready, they put us in a room by the stairwell looking over the dumpster. The next day they said we'd be put in a different room but it too wasn't ready until 5 p.m. I'm none too pleased. read more

Would not stay here again because of it. I also don't tend to like staying in tourist areas. I gave it a try. Safe area for a single woman traveling by herself. I had drinks at the upstairs bar. Lovely. Nice bartenders. Giving it a 3 only because of the noise factor for what you pay.

Although I had already passed the deadline to cancel at LJ Riviera Inn, I called the hotel and the woman I spoke with was so sweet and understanding and agreed to refund my money. Being summer in La Jolla Shores, it wasn't cheap so I was super appreciative for her kindness. Getting the refund from Expedia was a complete and total hassle, as they kept trying the hotel for confirmation after business hours and told me it was no longer an option to get a refund, but after a few days they finally tried again and was able to reach the facility. I realize now that this facility used to be a bunch of studio apartments and that I have had so many SIO friends who have lived there over the years. Although I no longer live in SD, I would say that this place is definitely a welcome addition to lodging in the shores!

We arrived at 3:30pm for check-in and were told our room was being cleaned and would be ready in 15 minutes, so we waited outside. After several minutes with no sound of cleaning coming from inside, we peeked in and saw the two cleaners sitting on the sofa on their phones. We asked if we could at least drop off our luggage, and they said yes -- they just needed to clean the floors first. They quickly vacuumed and did a once-over with a wet Swiffer, then left. The room still wasn't clean. There was dirt and sand along the edges of the walls, dirt on the floor, and three flies buzzing around thanks to the screen and front door having been left open. We made do -- we'd brought our own slippers, and at least the bedding was clean. We also noticed water pooling around the base of the toilet and ended up laying paper towels around it to avoid stepping in it. It appeared to just be water, but still not something you want to find. Ventilation was a real problem. The unit had several fans, but almost no air circulation except in the front bedroom, so it stayed uncomfortably stuffy, humid, and hot the entire stay -- even with windows open and outside temps only in the low 70s. It made sleeping difficult. Overall, the place is in serious need of an upgrade. Everything felt old and worn -- the couch and furniture were slightly sticky to the touch, the kitchen and bathroom were dated, and every set of window blinds was broken and wouldn't stay up. The location and price were the only real upsides. I'd avoid staying here again.

Only a farm door for the tiny restroom, so you hear each flush quite loudly. Water pressure for the shower is non existent. Walls are thin, you hear every sound from upstairs, rooms next door, and the street. There are no black out curtains or door guard, so the room is very bright in the morning. Pillows are lumpy and about 11 inches in height, and not good for neck support. No toiletries here either. Only good thing is that it seems decently clean. Overall, this is the worst place I've ever stayed at. If you enjoy sleep and comfort, booking is not recommended.

We checked in and the lady at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. However, our room was a lot smaller than I had expected. If cars are passing by, you'll hear it from the room, which made it hard for me to sleep. Also, there was a lady saying that her laptop was stolen and called the police. On the upside, it is pretty convenient to walk to downtown La Jolla and is very close to the ocean. Parking is also easy! Overall, I would probably pick somewhere quieter if we were returning to La Jolla, but other than that, not a bad price for what you're getting!

So we go out around 10 to enjoy Sea World or the Zoo, and we go out to lunch, and we just want to rest in our room before going swimming and we get back around 3. No one has been in the room. We call, and they apologize and no one shows up. We call again around 4, and at around 4:30 the room gets cleaned. Not once, not twice, but four times in our one week vacation. It's a 1st world problem and maybe I'm just a Karen, but I didn't like that.
