Needed a last minute reservation in La Jolla, saw the positive reviews and booked Empress. As many times as I have walked around the Village, I had never noticed the Empress. Pros: Staff is friendly Check-in smooth Room was spacious Room was clean Convenient location ( walking distance shopping, dining, walks along the Cove) "Free" breakfast (did not try) Restaurant/Drinks in lobby (Manhattan's. Did not try.) Cons: Resort fee $56 (which includes the valet parking) Drinks & snacks in lobby weren't replenished in the evenings (tried to get a soda and it was sold out) If on ground floor, it can be loud on a weekend night with all the revelers Overall, a pleasant stay.

The Empress Hotel La Jolla is a small hotel housed in an L-shaped 5-story building built in the late 1960's. It is located in the heart of La Jolla village and therefore close to several good restaurants, the village shops, and a short stroll to the La Jolla Cove and beach. A stay of one or two days is fine, but for a longer stay we would suggest someplace with more of a resort feel (i.e. with a pool, landscaped grounds, golf or tennis, large gym, etc. as this hotel had none of these). The $25 daily resort fee included valet parking in their small basement garage, wifi, and breakfast (nothing to rave about since it was standard breakfast fare like some of the inexpensive chain motels). The two elevators were functional. The on-site Manhattan steak house was fairly popular for a midweek in early Spring. Our Superior King Room had a pillow topped mattress, a sofa that opened to a twin bed, and designed in a beach aquamarine color scheme done pre-COVID. The shower tiles and glass doors were clean, but the bathroom was small. The closet doubled to also house a room safe, ironing board, the mini-fridge, the microwave, and a single serve coffee maker, thus leaving limited space for hanging clothes. But the best part of the Hotel was that our room was clean and comfortable for the relatively inexpensive price in a central La Jolla location. Early check in (before 2 PM) or late check outs are charged as add-ons. Some of the staff in the front counter at check in were friendly and helpful, the woman who greeted us was totally not excited about her job here. So overall, 4 stars for the comfortable and clean room at a fair price.

We chose the Empress based on its good ratings and were pleased initially--the staff was very friendly, and we were able to check in 30 minutes early. The parking garage is multi-level and a bit tight, but we managed to fit our Yukon. Just be aware that you need a QR code to enter, and we had to re-enter after mistakenly pulling a ticket. During business hours, there's a staff member at the gate who can assist. We had to wait about 10 minutes for the elevator to take us to our room because holy 1 of the 2 was working, apparently it's been down for 2 days as of July 23rd. Our main issue was with the room temperature and humidity. The first room had a beautiful view but felt very muggy and humid. We contacted the front desk, and maintenance tried to fix the issue, but it didn't improve, so we were moved to a different room. Unfortunately, the air conditioning there was only slightly better, and the new view overlooked the parking garage. Despite the AC being set to 60°F, the room still felt hot and humid, and we even woke up in the early morning feeling overheated and struggling to breathe due to the stuffy air. None of us were using blankets, and yet it was uncomfortable. We did move rooms again the next morning. Staff was very apologetic and accommodating with our requests. There are no fans in the room, so I highly recommend bringing a fan if you're sensitive to heat or humidity. This was by far our biggest complaint and impacted our sleep. Because we were so exhausted from the early wake-up, we unfortunately missed breakfast and can't comment on it. Another point to comment on is the bathroom doors, the are slatted so you can hear everything from inside, no privacy to others in the room. So if you are a shy bathroom user you can go downstairs to the other bathroom on the 1st floor instead. Other amenities were decent--there's an onsite washer and dryer ($2.50 per load, dryer sheets $2.00 cash only), and the machines run through an easy-to-use app called ShinePay. The location is great: a 9-minute walk to Children's Cove beach, and plenty of restaurants and sights nearby

Nice boutique hotel in La Jolla. Staff were friendly and the hotel is ideally located so there are many walkable places to visit / eat / shop. The hotel is only 5 stories tall with complimentary breakfast included. And, they only charge $15 a night for valet parking (with ins/outs).

My experience again yet was horrible. You have fake GM who has that laugh? They still don't even get a raise, they make them clean a room in seven minutes other than that mold, mold, mold, mold, mold, mold, mold..Rea Denny such a dad Gm. Where is Larry . Shoutout to Anthony. Maverick, Kaya, and Anna: I totally forgot about my birthday (my biz partner had to remind me and it just didn't come up as I'm a single mom working a TON)- most of the staff were rockstars! From service staff to upper management (thank you, Larry!) - absolutely amazing & super accommodating/helpful. Anthony was super pleasant on the phone (when I booked 2 days prior), and he was the reason I booked for my birthday and La Jolla concours l'elegance. Maverick (doorman) and Kaya+ Anna (front desk) were very lovely as well. I also was pleased with the service at the restaurant. Chuy was awesome and brought my food up to my room in a timely fashion. Kaya and Anna were absolutely lovely during my stay- the service here is amazing. They were so kind, helpful, and accommodating. Maverick was also super sweet & helped me settle in when i arrived. It was a busy weekend at the concours d'Elegance, so it took me 3 hours to get to SD. When I arrived, I didn't have to lift a finger and my scotch neat was ready for me at arrival. I love... thanks for the stellar service and wonderful experience, guys! Larry will be getting a call from me shortly, and it'll be nice to speak with him (good things) I will stay here again. Oh! & I forgot about Patrick- thank you, Patrick!

I arrived pretty early in the morning (optimistically expecting sunshine), but even with the typical coastal overcast, it didn't take away from the experience at all. In fact, I somehow ended up with the pool almost entirely to myself--in the middle of August, which felt like a hidden luxury. The setting is just beautiful. The views, the calm atmosphere, and the overall sense of escape made it easy to settle in and relax. I spent about five hours there and never felt rushed or overlooked. The staff, especially at the cabana bar, were fantastic--attentive, respectful, and genuinely pleasant to interact with. I ordered food and drinks throughout the day, and everything added to the ease and enjoyment of the experience. The only small downside is parking, which can be a bit tricky--but that's pretty standard for La Jolla. Overall, this was an incredible day experience and absolutely worth it. I'd do it again without hesitation.

I paid $500 for the room, arrived around 10 pm and had to check out by 11am, quick $500! There was a $45 resort fee, whatever that means. Still would love to know what that was for. Anyways, the bellhop guys were nice they gave me recommendations for where to eat and also helped carry my suitcase up to my room. The bedroom was small, really small and the view was of a back lot with dumpsters and the side of a building. Sure, the room was hip and funky and cool. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small but functional. Listen the room was fine, but for $500...and this was a heavily discounted room because I booked through Hotel Tonight. Anyways, I walked the hotel at night and it was nice because I had the place to myself, the pool is really pretty at night, it's lit up, I recommend walking outside and having a seat on their comfy couches above the pool. In the morning I continued exploring the hotel and when I went to check out the dining room I was receiving unfriendly glances from the hostess or whoever she was. So much so that I stopped and asked if it was okay that I was looking around, to which she replied, "Well are you eating?" I said no and that I was staying here and just wanted to check out the view. I am a pretty average looking chick, was in work out clothes, maybe I didn't fit the high end clientele look and it seemed to bother her. Anyways, the people at the front desk upon check out weren't the friendliest either, seemed annoyed when I asked if they had change for the bellhop. The man at the concierge desk who I believe has a job of making sure everyone in the hotel is happy and having a grand time didn't even acknowledge. me the four or five times I walked past his desk. I felt unwelcome to be honest.

We stayed in Room 208 and while there are no elevators or luggage carts (so pack light or be ready for some stairs), the oceanfront views totally made up for it. The hotel has a charming, older vibe, but it's well maintained and fits the beachy, Balinese-inspired theme perfectly. Our room came with an above-average kitchen setup, which made it easy to prep snacks and simple meals during our stay. Free water bottles in the lobby were a nice touch, and the complimentary breakfast (7:30-10:30 a.m.) was way better than your standard hotel spread, fresh, even the bacon was crispy but not over cooked, tasty, and filling. It's just a short walk to the beach, the kid-friendly "children's pool" area, and of course, the famous La Jolla seals. Be warned: La Jolla has its fair share of hills, so if you're bringing a stroller, be ready for a bit of a workout. The construction is bothersome but I was never bothered by the sounds. Progress comes with inconveniences so it didn't bother me personally. Here's why I lowered the rating. The elevator is HORRIBLE. Something should be done in the massive renovation and it was completely unreliable. Especially, since there's only one carrying luggage down the stairwells is risky at best. I'm incredibly thankful I did because she responded admitting that she had booked our reservation for the wrong dates. I was shocked. We had booked our room block nearly a year in advance and had confirmed everything multiple times. Because of that mistake, my husband no longer had the suite we had reserved for him and his groomsmen to get ready in. Instead, they were placed in a much smaller room with construction directly outside. The getting-ready photos we had envisioned--and paid for a professional photographer to capture--were completely different because of an error that was not ours. What disappointed me most was the response. Rather than making every effort to fix the situation or offering a comparable solution, it felt like we were simply told, "This is what you get." As a bride, that was heartbreaking. On the morning of my wedding, I also had to spend time dealing with hotel issues instead of simply enjoying one of the most important days of my life. No bride should have to experience that. To make matters worse, after our stay my husband paid for one of our rooms, yet another charge for that same room was later processed, leaving us trying to resolve a duplicate charge after our wedding. After returning home, I found other reviews describing similar experiences involving room block mistakes and communication issues. Reading those reviews made me realize our experience may not have been an isolated incident, which was incredibly disappointing. I want to be clear that Wedgewood Weddings was absolutely incredible. Our wedding itself was beautiful, and their staff made our day special. If you're getting married in La Jolla, I highly recommend Wedgewood. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about La Jolla Cove Suites. If you're trusting a hotel with your wedding weekend, I would strongly encourage you to consider staying elsewhere. A wedding weekend is something you'll never get back, and ours was overshadowed by avoidable mistakes and unnecessary stress.

The young gentleman who checked us in was charming and friendly, and we were glad to arrive. Our room was clean, and the view from the top was excellent, even with a slight obstruction. One of my least favorite post-pandemic trends is how many hotels have adopted the "reduced service" approach, which often reads as "we can't be bothered." When you're paying hundreds of dollars a night, basic service shouldn't be a negotiation. The Shoal did mention this policy upfront. The next morning, on our way out, I stopped by the front desk to keep things simple for housekeeping. We only needed two things: replacement pumps for the broken shower product dispensers (two of them), and the bed made. Straightforward. They did replace the pumps, and we appreciated that. But they didn't bother making the bed. Oddly, they did clean the bathroom and replace towels--something we didn't ask for. When a guest makes a basic request, why is it missed? Policy? Forgetfulness? Inefficiency? Hard to say. The hotel's location is excellent--about two miles from the village in a mostly residential area. There's a charming little gourmet market down the street and several restaurants within walking distance. The beach is just steps away. Even with the on-and-off rain, we genuinely enjoyed our La Jolla weekend. The food scene in this town is strong. Do a little research, because there are some fantastic restaurants packed into this small, very appealing area.

My husband and I came to San Diego for a quick getaway and saw this hotel on Priceline. I googled…read morethis hotel and saw there was a better deal online so we booked it through their website. We checked in and the lady at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. However, our room was a lot smaller than I had expected. If cars are passing by, you'll hear it from the room, which made it hard for me to sleep. Also, there was a lady saying that her laptop was stolen and called the police. On the upside, it is pretty convenient to walk to downtown La Jolla and is very close to the ocean. Parking is also easy! Overall, I would probably pick somewhere quieter if we were returning to La Jolla, but other than that, not a bad price for what you're getting!
