We drove an hour to get here and arrived right when they opened. The gentleman at the counter greeted us warmly and asked if we'd ever had Puerto Rican food before. We told him about our trip and how much we'd loved the food, and from there, he proceeded to walk us through every single item on the menu--including the drinks and desserts. He was incredibly welcoming and clearly proud of the food they serve. After plenty of deliberation, we finally placed our orders. We started with the bacalaitos--a thin, crispy cod fritter served with garlic sauce. A tad greasy, yes, but what a treat! Then came what we had driven an hour for: the mofongo. Between the three of us, we ordered the pernil (slow-roasted pork shoulder), the churrasco with chimichurri, and the shrimp with garlic sauce. These are definitely not light meals, but WOW. The flavors were impeccable--rich, garlicky, savory, and incredibly satisfying. It immediately brought back memories of the food we loved so much in Puerto Rico. Needless to say, we found our mofongo spot. And yes, we will absolutely make the trek again.

Let me begin by saying that most of the food is super on point. The pernil, tostadas, mayo ketchup, pina drink, and arroz con gandules is delicious and they brought that out really quickly, about 5 or so minutes after we placed our order. The restaurant is small, with limited seating and no real dedicated parking area since it's right off the main road. Staff seemed nice enough. My main complaint came from how long it took for the Pinchos to arrive and the quality of them. It took over 20 minutes from placing an order for them before they came out, which was a bit disappointing. On top of that, the skewers were easily bendable which is not how Pinchos are usually served on. Also, I'm not sure if it was the sauce or the quality of meat, but the Pinchos and the bread included with them were a bit lacking. Also, for our entire meal we spent over $45, which is asking a lot for what you're getting. The other thing that I found concerning was the location. In the 30+ minutes we spent here, we saw a lot of homeless and drug addicted people tweaking on the streets. Many of them almost got hit by cars or the metro train that passes by. It's already bad enough that you have to park far away, but to then have to contend with that while trying to enjoy your meal is something else. I have no doubt that they can easily fix the Pinchos and the bread, but you can't fix the location short of moving elsewhere. If this restaurant was closer to the marina, it would be popping all the time. My only other recommendation is to add Quesitos to the dessert menu.

Don't forget the pastries made in house and coffee - all great! Of course you can make everything yourself with ingredients from their store. Beyond groceries, I think they even have Cuban cigars here. The market is immaculate and service is wonderful! There is a small table inside where you can enjoy your coffee and pastries; or meal. With tax AND tip the total came out close to $40 which I paid with my credit card. When I was filling out their online form, there was an option for Curbside Pick up which I checked. It asked how they would recognize us and I had to provide the Make and Model of our vehicle. In the notes section, I also requested they put our order in the trunk of our car when we arrived. On the day of: ======================= 12:51 PM - Received a text message that our order was ready for pick up. "Once outside, reply HERE to this message or call 323-507-6404 and we'll bring your order to you." 12:51 PM [Us] - "HERE" 12:51 PM [Them] - "Please wait. Someone will be out soon to bring your order to you." 12:52 PM [Us]- "Okay can you put it in the trunk of our car. I parked right in front of you." 1:11 PM [Us]- "Almost ready?" We called the 323 phone number twice and nobody picked up. 1:23 PM [Us] - "Sorry we have to leave, can you cancel our order?" Called the (323) number one more time; no answer. At this point it's 1:30 PM, there's a long line and a lot of people are standing around waiting for their food. My husband has medical issues so there was no way he was going to get out and he would not let me either. We ended up waiting for ~45 minutes before we left around 1:35 PM. I figured I would have to contact them for a refund. I emailed them about the cancellation and requested for a refund. During these times, my husband and I have been EXTRA patient and understanding with businesses so is why we even waited. While disappointed, my husband and I were discussing that we would give them another shot next time they came to our area. 2:45 PM - I get ANOTHER text message saying that our order is ready and to come pick up our food. I replied that we were there 2 hours ago and left already. I had asked to cancel our order. Then a woman calls my cellphone and angrily said that we did not follow instructions and were supposed to check in at the window. I don't understand what the point of "curbside" is then. Plus the text message I received said "Please wait. Someone will be out soon to bring your order to you." which never implied we had to "check in" with them at the window. While my husband was trying to respond to her, she talked over him yelling and hung up on us! We were both surprised at how that was handled. I don't understand why she was so angry when we did follow the instructions provided. Later, I received an email response for my refund request and it basically copied and pasted instructions about having to check in at the window, again making it as though we did something wrong. We WERE willing to give them another try, but after that experience, it totally changed our minds. This was our first time ordering with them so if there was some misunderstanding on either end, I get that, but I thought the instructions were clear that we were doing curbside and someone was going to bring our food to our car. Even if they had apologized for the mix up, we would have returned, but after getting yelled at and hung up on, wow... no thanks. (After reading some of the other reviews, it seems like even if you pre-pay for your food, they still ended up waiting and some have experienced the same customer service as us.)
