Carne frita...so crisp and again flavorless

The service & ambience is great, the young lady that waited on us today was very attentive and we appreciate that. We ordered the sampler 'un poco de todo' and some bacalaitos. My alcapurria was not cooked all the way, the bacalaitos had no flavor or bacalao. We then added carne frita on the side...and again...no sazon or adobo. Absolutely no flavor and lil crisp pieces that had no meat. I was very disappointed. I'm Puerto Rican so I know what this food should taste like. Not sure if I'll ever go back. But to be fair, perhaps the cook was having an off day ‍ because nothing we ate was good!

There aren't many Puerto Rican restaurants in the Bay Area, so I was happy to discover one 6 hours away from home in Southern California. I came across this restaurant on Yelp and I had to give it a try. My significant other, who is Puerto Rican, has been craving for authentic Spanish food reminiscent of his hometown in Massachusetts. All I can say is, FINALLY! This restaurant is located on a busy street and lacks a private parking lot, but we were fortunate to find street parking in front. As soon as we walked in, the decor took me back to the Spanish eateries in New York and Massachusetts. The host, who also served us, was incredibly friendly and attentive. We ordered mofongo with Pernil, chuletas fritas with arroz gandules, alcapurrias, and two coquitos. Everything on our table was delicious, authentic, and tasted just like the restaurants in his hometown. We can't wait to come back!

Cute place just off of Lankershim. Placed order on the phone for a Cubano sandwich lunch special and the Pollo Caribe Salad. When you call they try to send you to the online order page which is sponsored by chow now, which probably means prices are marked up. So I called and waited to speak to someone at the restaurant. Placed my order and she said it'd be about 10 minutes. It takes 10 mins to drive there so I got in the car. Parking was easy - there was parking out front. Don't think there's a parking lot but not sure. The place has a homey feel - has a gate door in front of the regular door. Wonder if this used to be a house? Went up to the counter and told the lady my name for the order. She said it would just be a few minutes, so I paid and waited. Got the food and she said to check it just in case. I like that, because so many times you take the food and its not until you get home that you notice something is missing. All was good so I drove home. Food was good - my cubano sandwich was yummy as was the fries. My hubby enjoyed the salad and shared some with me. There were plantains in the salad and the chicken was tender and flavorful. Overall a good lunch spot. My food was very filling!

Great little spot. Cozy and nicely decorated. My luncheon friend was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and as a regular, he says Mofongos is legit. With that declaration, and his guidance, we ordered the following: Pastelillos (4) - One of each, beef, Chicken, cheese, and pizza. These mini empanadas are so tasty and full of flavor. It's a must order dish. Asopao de Camarones - shrimp soup with rice & peas Pure comfort food Delicious, hearty, and packed with flavor. Mofongo de Pechuga Asada - Mofongo stuffed with chopped chicken breast. A signature dish of Mofongos and a Puerto Rican classic. Arroz con Gandules - pigeon pea rice. Everything was delicious. This is Puerto Rican food at its finest. The flavors were full and authentic. There are few PR spots in LA, and this might be the best one. The service was very friendly and helpful. Mofongos is definitely with a visit.

I am never disappointed coming here. Coming to this restaurant makes me miss the East coast and my family. When you're here they treat you like family. The food is so good. You really can't go wrong with what you get. I've been here multiple times and have gotten a few different things. Definitely check it out.

If I could give this place a million stars.... I would!! The food was so good that I didn't even stop to take pictures. 10/10 would order the pastries and the mofongo with the pork shoulder

My wife & i came here on a Thursday afternoon. The food was absolutely amazing & the service was also awesome. My wife is from Puerto Rico so she recommended that we come here so i can try her cultures food. I give it a 10/10. Thank you!

Un poco de todo-little bit of everything

We've been coming to Mofongos Puerto Rican Restaurant since 2003, right after we visited Puerto Rico and completely fell in love with the food, the culture, and the people. That trip made us lifelong fans of Puerto Rican cuisine, and Mofongos has always been one of those places that brings us right back to the island. It had been a minute since our last visit, but I'm happy to say the food absolutely did not disappoint and neither did the service. We reserved our table by the window, which made for a great, relaxed dining experience, and every dish we ordered was full of flavor and cooked just right. From the warm service to the comforting, authentic flavors, Mofongos continues to deliver after all these years. Highly recommend to anyone looking for real Puerto Rican food and a welcoming atmosphere.

We were celebrating my husband's fraternity anniversary and reaching 200k miles on our car and popped in not looking for anything spectacular but filling. This spot isn't too far from our home and we wanted to give it a try. It's unassuming and and set back from the street between less fancy establishments. All that being said, I wasn't expecting what I got --- well prepared, well seasoned food that knocked my socks off. We had the chicken soup to start. The chicken was freshly shredded and the soup was brimming with meat --- not watery. And start. We both had mofongo -- husband had fried pork and I had beef stew. I found the pork a little tough and less crispy than I like but that's the toss up of ordering fried pork. The stew was comforting and filled with everything you'd expect. The star -- as the name of the spot suggests -- is the mofongo. I could smell the taste before I put it in my mouth. Garlicky. Carby. Warm goodness. My picture was taken halfway through the meal because when he set the food down...it was on. I basically ate all of it. Recommend. I'll need to come again to be sure the mofongo hits every time: this def gave -- spot to bring friends to. The best of the area.

I finally made it in and dined at the only Puerto Rican restaurant in Los Angeles. I've been getting so many recommendations to try Mofongos over the years and decided to come in because of a pop-up I am planning to attend this weekend from a chef who recently moved here from Portland. My cousin from Portland suggested I try the Puerto Rican pop-up in DTLA this weekend. I ordered the mofongo de pernil (crispy roasted pork shoulder on green plantains) and arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) which are considered national dishes of Puerto Rico. I have always had in the back of my mind someone telling me that she didn't like the food in Puerto Rico because it was "bland." The dishes at Mofongos were not bland. They were comforting and flavorful -- I need every bit of comfort these days! I am now considering a trip to Puerto Rico to sightsee... and eat! The service was warm and friendly. I definitely felt welcomed and would not hesitate returning to try more dishes along with some of the appetizers and cocktails like the piña colada or coquito. Plenty of parking on the street in front of the restaurant.

My brother and I came here yesterday to celebrate our mom's heavenly birthday. She was half Puerto Rican so we were looking to celebrate and honor her with food from her culture. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. The food was so DRY, but it was more than just an overcooked thing. It seemed like it had been sitting out for a while. The sign outside said they needed help so I don't wanna go too hard on them bc I get it... the table next to us got the same thing I did and by the time we were ready to go, their food looked picked over as well. You can look at the picture and see how dry the meat was. I had asked to switch my pernil out with the pollo guisado and it was just as bad. I don't know how you can make stewed meat dry, but it was. The arroz con gandules tasted like tomato rice from the cafeteria and the mofongo was nothing like I had ever tasted. I dare to say it was overseasoned? But it made his stomach hurt. If I didn't have a reference for how the food was supposed to taste I probably wouldn't be as upset. We were both young when our mom passed, but my brother doesn't remember anything. So for this to be his first experience in such a long time was EXTREMELY disappointing.

This wonderful restaurant offers delicious Dominican food in a city where there is a dearth of Dominican options. Pardon my ignorance if there is a large community here in LA and that I am just unaware. I ordered the Santana's chicken - or their version of pollo guisado - as well as a cheese and diced salami empanada to start. The portions are pretty large here so the entrée lasted to me about two meals. The chicken was just so flavorful with all the different spices and ingredients. Really well done. I had mine with moro instead of the regular rice because I wanted that extra umph (and protein) from the beans. The empanada had a nice crisps to it and once you've bit in your mouth is met with the oozing, delicious cheese and salty salami. I really enjoyed my meal here. The people here are really friendly and helpful. I was created right as I walked in. There's not a lot of seating area so there's probably a lot of takeout orders here, although I was able to dine in since the place wasn't super busy at the time of my visit. I ordered the La Bamba Special, which features slow-roasted, shredded pork seasoned with a Caribbean-style marinade and is usually served with rice and beans. I was looking forward to a flavorful Cuban-style dish, but the meal turned out to be quite unexpected. Instead, the plate included chunks of pork topped with raw red onions, accompanied by Mexican rice and refried beans, which didn't align with my expectations. Overall, the dish was disappointing and unappealing, both in flavor and in the combination of sides. I ended up eating only a quarter of it. The refried beans had no flavor, and I chose not to eat the rice because I prefer different styles. One of my friends ordered fried yuca and fried plantains. While I appreciate the effort to include these items, the yuca was quite dry and could benefit from more seasoning. The plantains, which resembled regular bananas, seemed to have too much oil. As someone who enjoys Caribbean cuisine, I believe the restaurant would benefit from focusing more on traditional flavor combinations. Mixing elements of Mexican and Caribbean cuisine can be a challenge, especially for those familiar with both; there's great potential for improvement by keeping these cuisines distinctly represented. I recommend assessing your kitchen staff; they may need training. I wanted to share some positive recommendations with family and friends about visiting this restaurant, but I recommend exploring other options for now. I hope that constructive feedback will help enhance the dining experience. Thank you!
