This place is located in a seedyish part but don't be deterred there are so many great restaurants around here! Amalias is one of those gems. Came here on a Thursday night and it was karaoke night! So fun but really loud! Not the place to come if you want to have meaningful conversations! Haha! But you don't really come here for conversations, you come here for the best Guatemalan food in L.A.! Here's what we ordered: Enchiladas- which are nothing like Mexican enchiladas. There's no tortilla. It's actually a really fresh healthy dish and more like a salad. Fresh beets either queso fresco. So good! Cheeseburger and fries - ha! Yes the kid ordered that! He said it was delicious! The grilled fish - this comes with rice, beans and a salad. So filling. The fish was perfectly cooked and so light. The grilled shrimp - one this was my favorite. The shrimp was tasty. I keep craving it and need to go back for more. The thing that I could literally bathe in is there salsas. The green one isn't like regular salsa verde. It's more herbaceous and has just the right amount of spice. The red one is more like a tomato based sauce but I think it has red chilis too although it isn't really spicy at all. It is one of the tastiest sauces. Authentic. Delicious. Two words to describe my experience at Amalia's Restaurant. Right in the heart of LA, at the corner of Beverly and Normandie. If you know the area, you'll know the parking situation. There's a plaza lot, which, on the night I came, was half empty--and it's free. Or you can try your luck on one of the side streets. I'm not sure about restrictions, but I didn't see any meters (though I wasn't really looking). Speak Spanish or bring someone who does. The evening I dropped in, the host/server/cashier didn't speak much English. I managed, but it definitely helped that my plus-one is fluent. Inside, it's all tables, set up to accommodate live music and dancing. Combined with the décor, including paintings, it felt like sitting in a Guatemalan courtyard, hanging out with food and drinks. There wasn't any music or dancing that night, but it was lively enough with the background music and the other guests enjoying their meals and having a good time. As for the food--see my pics! My friend and I shared everything in the photos. It was a combo, so we got a little bit of everything. We included drinks and dessert, and there were no to-go boxes needed. Knowing how labor-intensive some of the dishes can be, I have to say I really enjoyed how simple yet flavorful the dishes were--even down to the salsa. One of the two house salsas had a nice kick, and I enjoyed mixing them together. Hell yeah, this place is on my list to visit again--more than likely, sooner rather than later. read more

I had a great experience at Amalia's Restaurant! The service was excellent, the staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we felt welcome from the moment we walked in. The food was delicious and full of flavor, definitely worth the wait. It did take a little while for our food to come out, but that's pretty normal since everything tastes freshly made and prepared with care. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for enjoying a nice meal with family or friends. Large place. Plenty of seating. Nice staff. Horchata is good. The food is plenty. The assorted appetizer plate is large. Good for 4 people. Has a little bit of everything. From tamales, chuchito, platanos, crema, tostadas, taquitos. We had breakfast for lunch. Platanos were very good. The beans were burned. Couldn't eat from the burnt flavor. The caldos that were being served looked delicious. There is parking in the shopping center. Would go back to try their caldos. read more

I've been a fan since they were in the residential area--that homey vibe was wonderful. The food and service was excellent. We live in the Inland Empire and there's truly nothing out here that compares to Amalia's. They should definitely consider opening a location on this side of town; while other Guatemalan spots have popped up, none are as authentic. I'm certain it would be a huge success here! most expensive broth I have ever paid. I had the flu and wanted some broth so I went to this place and I paid about $11 for it and when I got home I noticed that it was only half a pint. A quart would have cost me $44. I know we are in a severe financial inflation but come on. At a vietmamese restauran, a quart of simple pho cost me about $14 a quart. 44 dollars for a quart of broth? insane! read more

The service was just a big no there were only three tables occupied and the waitresses took almost 15 minutes to come and attend us and then when we would ask for something it would take very long time just to bring it and it took me more than five minutes for them to run my card maybe because it was Counting day for them, but it was just a big no the food was overall mid, but not the best place to come and eat specially the service it was just horrible in all honesty. Delicious Guatemalan food. My family is Guatemalan so when we are craving Guatemalan food we come here to eat. I had the tostadas which include : one of salsa, one of beans, and a guacamole one. I also had the garnachas. Everything was so delicious. They also have so many drinks including the Gallo beer, which is the beer of Guatemala. Everything was so flavorful and well-seasoned. Service was super sweet, but it was rather hectic so understandably sometimes you have to get their attention. I came in on a Saturday around 2pm. I saw this place while driving by before and wanted to give it a try. I regret having driven by so many times and not trying it. The parking lot is a big bonus, but there's street parking too I believe. If there's one thing you should do in your lifetime, it's eating here. read more

I really wanted to like this place because I love Guatemalan cuisine. They have live marimba on the weekends (which is nice) but it's very very loud inside the dining area. I give this beautiful plate a solid 9 out of 10. Our server was attentive they started off with tortilla chips and 2 different dipping sauces which were both equally delicious the green one is a tiny bit spicy and the red sauce is not spicy at all. We were having trouble choosing between all the good looking plates in the menu that we decided to go with Amalias Antojitos which is like a bit of everything. Food was great, but I just felt like the chuchitos needed more sauce inside ... maybe that's just my liking other than that everything was great. We were craving some garnachas and decided to drive out to amalia's. However we were really dissatisfied, the only plate of food that was good was the carne asada & shrimp plate. And the fried plátanos as you can't really mess that up. The prices also do NOT match what their menus show, the prices are increased between $2-$4. Los Angeles does not have enough Guatemalan food, my family is originally from Guatemala, and it is tough to find a good-tasting Guetamalan spot. Amalia's is one of the best if not the best place we have found in our area. The staff is very friendly, and my loved the food. And she does not like to eat out at all lol, she claims her cooking is better than the food she can buy on the street. She is a very good cook btw. "In my 37 years in this country, I have never had a soup this good." These were the words my mom spoke halfway through her seafood soup Stopped by Amalia's for lunch with my mom, a native Guatemalan. We ordered appetizers first (Antojitos), which consisted of fried plantains, taquitos, garnachas and enchiladas, as well as a chipillin tamale and a "chuchito". Every single one of these entries was amazing, with special shoutout to the garnachas which were tiny little bombs of flavor that could not possibly have had enough of! My food came later, which was the Churrasco plate which consisted of a large piece of steak, refried beans, rice, and two fried slices of potato, with guacamole, salsa, and a chile pepper to accompany. I went to town on my steak and immediately found myself dousing it in the condiments which only further accentuated the flavors. The pepper in particular made my dish phenomenal; as I am a spice lover, it gave the meat an extra kick that was much welcomed. The rice and beans were also very good, with special shoutout to the beans which IMMEDIATELY stood out to me as some of the best beans I've had in a restaurant of this nature. Mom got the seafood soup and was immediately blown away. They DO NOT skimp on the seafood in this one, and my mom was pleased at the abundance of shrimp, mussels, and octopus in her soup. Not pictured are the tortillas that accompanied our meal. These were DELICIOUS, particularly when doused with the refried beans from my meal and a few pieces of cheese which our waitress happily brought over. Also not pictured are the several times my mom uttered the phrase "It's just like the ones I ate as a kid" Special shoutout to our server (Shylie), who was among the sweetest servers I have ever encountered in a restaurant. She took the time to have brief conversations with my mom, which only helped to elevate our overall experience. All in all, one of the best hidden gems in Los Angeles.
