The last time my wife and I attempted to eat at this place we ended up just walking out. We arrived during a weekday and wanted to shave lunch sitting next to the window. It just happened to be the only dirty table in the restaurant and the hostess/waitress made a sarcastic comment saying "of course you'd want to sit at the only dirty table here...". Stopped by on a road trip on Memorial Day. Food was super fast, and delicious! They don't have a children's menu, but they are willing to create a kid friendly dish. Cashew chicken and beef in a bamboo pot were both excellent, though and the kids ended up eating more of our meals than their own. Very reasonably priced, too. read more

What can I say? I absolutely hate going here because I want to buy everything on the menu. The food is amazing, the staff is upbeat. Good fusion-y basic food. Service was funky. Ordered veggie spring rolls and got shrimp, after ordering the main dishes. Was accidentally served something that wasn't ours. Not a place I'll revisit. It was a strange rice dish they called Asian. I guess if rice is the primary ingredient it qualifies. The manager then proceeded to deny their drink specials when we showed them the website. They rudely dismissed it saying it was out of date and they wouldn't honor it. If you are going to have a website, please keep it up to date or honor what is on it. We were excited to come here tonight, but you lost four customers. read more

One time I sent back a very poor bowl of noodles (it was not hot and tasted terrible) then the manager came out with my bowl of bad noodles and proceeded to reprimand me for being stupid and sending back food. Encore is the best Asian cuisine places in Lawrence. I travel a lot and have lived in several large cities and this place is as good as any place I have eaten. The wait staff is inconsistent and they have a horrible habit of seating people on top of one another (no consideration of personal space). This was a tough one. Good food, mediocre service. As we entered Encore we were greeted by... no one. Just a bunch of people waiting around to get tables. At least our fellow diners were honest, as there was no host to take care of the busy crowd on a Friday night. We didn't have to wait long to be seated, but once we were at a table we did have to wait a while to talk to a server. Upon talking to our server, we were not treated very politely. The server took our order of beverages and an appetizer, and later took our dinner orders. It was a while before we saw our drinks, but the Almond Milk Tea was fantastic, as was my husband's Pineapple Smoothie. Milk Tea is not easy to come by, so I was pleased, though the straw in a hot beverage was a little weird. We waited for a while longer in the neon yellow restaurant, which is quite loud due to the ceramic tile floor and lack of booths or sound absorption. At first I liked the atmosphere, as it reminded me of being in Asia, but the noise level wore thin after a while, and the feeling of the place grew old quickly. Then my entree came. Before the appetizer and before my companion's entree. So, I asked if the server could take it back and bring it after the appetizer and at the same time as the other entree. It was at this point that the server became rude. Before this she was busy, and maybe a little absent minded,now she seemed angry with us. She did comply with the request though, even if she was rude to us for the rest of our meal. Despite the service, the food was great. The Spring Rolls were done well, and the Pineapple Fried Rice (served in a pineapple!) was tasty. The highlight was the General Tso's "Chicken," made of a veggie chicken substitute of tofu skins and served in a rich sauce. The little pieces of "chicken" were dense and tasty, quite different than you might imagine, and so super yummy! The "chicken" was surrounded by brocoli that was cooked perfectly, and our dishes were presented in an artful way. I agree with the other reviewer, that Encore is just getting started, and after they have been around for a while hopefully they will improve. For now, I'll be getting carry-out on my "chicken." read more

Beef Teriyaki, Singapore rice noodle, black bean chow fun, and the appetizer on the lettuce wrap (I cannot remember the name) are good. Beef teriyaki is served in a big bamboo dish. I found it delicious in five or ten first bites. I have tried some other dishes before and they are just okay to too salty and feel rich with MSG (even though some waiters saed they did not use MSG). Mixed feeling about this place. High quality ingredients seemingly well prepared. Much higher quality than any other Asian place I've been to in Lawrence. My son was very happy with his Xi an chow noodles and it looked very good. I had the classic General Tso Chicken and just did not like the preparation, I like it crispy and this was too saucy for me. Encore is delicious! Definitely the best Chinese food in Lawrence, by far, and probably my favorite restaurant in Lawrence. I love the Mongolian beef, ma po tofu, dan dan noodles, and curry seafood soup. Don't get the Mango Salad Dressing shrimp though; "salad dressing" is code for mayonnaise, and lots of it. Amazingly delicious Asian food! Encore Cafe is our favorite restaurant in Lawrence! I generally rotate between the Birds Nest and the Teriyaki Beef that comes in the bamboo bowl. We found Encore offers relatively authentic Chinese food in Lawrence KS - which is the only place we found so far. May be we have high expectations because we moved from Toronto (where looking for authentic Chinese food is not a problem at all). Top choices include beef noodles soup, combo fried rice, Singapore noodles and beef rice-noodles. A bit too salty sometimes. I absolutely love this restaurant!! It's great food, and is as close to authentic Chinese food as you can get here in Lawrence. It's pretty close to what my own grandma would make. You must try the beef chow fun and the vegetarian gyozas. Delish!! read more

What I can complain about is the state of the restaurant. Many of the plates are chipped and the tables are sticky and in need of sanding. The bathroom design is questionable at the moment for instead of a mirror they have a window that looks into the other bathroom. The food is good though, I usually order the gyoza, which are dumplings with great sauce. The bamboo bowl dishes is good too but I usually go for a noodle dish. read more
